This Week's Saturday Shorts: Horses, Toy Cars, and Revenge!
Hello ladies and gentlemen, your pal Muldoon here with this week's lovely picks for SATURDAY SHORTS - the online screening room that belongs to you, showing films created and submitted by fellow AICN readers. So heads up, this week's selection isn't all wrapped around a specific genre, so prepare yourself for a few sharp turns as we hop from one film to the next. Thanks again to all the filmmakers out there who are submitting their shorts. Very literally, if no one shoots me their films - then SATURDAY SHORTS simply wouldn't exist and AICN would be left shortless. So if you've got a film and are debating whether or not to send it in - go for it.
Go grab yourself some popcorn, lock your kids in a closet, kill the lights, relax and check out this little weekly film fest we've got ourselves here:
NITRO WARRIORS 2 - AFTERBURNER
To kick this shindig off right, we've got an epic stop motion film starring toy cars and a hell of a lot of awesomeness. From Paul Greer and the gang over at Vangaurd Pictures, we get this oddly jam packed action flick. "The chase continues after the epic events of the critically-acclaimed 'Nitro Warriors - A Stop Motion Animated Film' and takes to the skies in 'Nitro Warriors 2 - Afterburner' The gadget-laden Ford Mustang finds itself again under hot pursuit as it ducks, dives and rolls from skyscraper to skyscraper to outsmart hoards of police cars, missiles and... giant robots!! The Mustangs' arch-nemesis, a relentless police Chevy Corvette, will once again stop at absolutely nothing to catch its mark... Taking over 6 months to produce, Nitro 2 was filmed using toys and filmed entirely on an iPod. The production team created specially designed 'Flight Rig' systems as well as utilising digital FX for removal of rigs to capture shots never been filmed before in Stop Motion."
Patrick Rea knocks it out of the park with this puppy. It's beautifully and artistically shot/tightly cut/and everything just feels right, as if you can see the guy's hard work and thought in each frame. Apparently this short is part of a webseries called WITHERED WORLD, so if you like what you see here, then be sure to check out other shorts in the series. "A man seeks revenge for the death of his family, while the world is a ticking clock."
From Jamie Tracey we get this slow burn of a freaky thriller with interesting locations that really give you a feel of the guy's world. I'm not sure if that makes half as much sense as it does in my head, but the story could have been much smaller - I'm glad it's not. "A shrieking scream awakes in an abandoned factory. A lone man, seemingly the only one who can hear it, is lead to a long forgotten item that carries some chilling baggage."
And we have Felipe Bustos Sierra here to stick the SATURDAY SHORTS landing. This is a damn fine film that was inspired by Felipe's experiences as a ricksaw driver in Edinburgh. He's got two other shorts currently doign the festival route, but I hope to nab them when they hit the internet. Keep them coming!
Boom! I hope you ladies and gents enjoyed this week's selection, clearly I did, but if you saw one film you dug that you wouldn't have seen otherwise - I'm cool with that (unless of course you absolutely loathed the other three, in which case I'd be kind of bummed). I'll see you folks next week, but hit up some of these links below if you're in the mood for more short film fun:
If you have a short and think it belongs here or are on the fence about whether to send it in, please do send it in - I'd love to see what you've put together. I've already seen hundreds of fresh new filmmakers' shorts and like any good addict, I need more!
Shoot me an email at "Mike@aintitcool.com"
In the subject line include:
“SHORTS” + “Your film’s name” + “The film’s genre”
Then, in the body of the email, please include a synopsis of the film and any contact information you might think I need or would want published. The more info you send my way, the more info there is to put with your short.
Please don’t feel the need to submit multiple times.
Remember, the filmmakers might still be in the audience, so feel free to share your thoughts in Talkbacks below. (JUST DON'T BE AN ASSHOLE). I picked them, so you know I think highly of all of these, but how about you fine folks? How'd you like 'em?
BY THE WAY: If you've had a short featured here, that means that I personally am a fan of your work, so feel free to shoot me any kind of news on new projects/films/whatever. I can't say I'll be able to help or in what capactiy, but I'm interested in your work and am always down to see more! (Keep making cool stuff, everyone!)
