We got some more Oscar pedigree in Matthew Vaughn's adaptation of Mark Millar's SECRET SERVICE. After hearing that Academy Award winners Colin Firth and Michael Caine were playing central roles in the upcoming comic book flick, we now have word from Variety that Vaughn has found his villain in Best Supporting Actor nominee Samuel L. motha' fuckin Jackson. We knew that they wanted a big name to star as the adversary to Taron Egerton's Gary, with offers having previously gone out to Tom Cruise and Leonardo DiCaprio, and it looks like they've settled on Sam "The Man".
Samuel L. doesn't have the most impeccable resume when it comes to playing comic book villains (*cough*THE SPIRIT*cough*), but you can't say he doesn't have the talent, respectability, and geek pedigree (he is Nick Fury, after all) to be an impressive choice for the part. We saw in DJANGO UNCHAINED last year that even when indulging in the tropes that have made him a massively popular figure among young and old alike, he can still immerse himself in a part and effortlessly walk away with scenes. If he can bring the simultaneous mix of humor and menace that he exhibited in DJANGO, he should be a striking, imposing threat for our badass British heroes.
Next step for Vaughn & Co. is locking down their female lead. Fingers crossed for Emma Watson!
SECRET SERVICE is gearing up to shoot this fall, and will drop on November 14th, 2014.
