Reserved to Talk Back about THE ADVENTURES OF ROCKY AND BULLWINKLE

Published at:  Jul 01, 2000 2:05:15 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here. I haven't seen this yet... I'll be checking the film out tomorrow (Saturday) and then if it moves me to, I'll write a review up for it. I've been hearing mixed word of mouth, including QUINT who hated the thing to some degree... maybe he just was displeased with it. I know he didn't care for it. ANyway... here is where you can compare it to ROGER RABBIT and SPACE JAM and MARY POPPINS and SONG OF THE SOUTH and ANCHORS AWEIGH and BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS and so on. You can assess if this was DeNiro's finest career moment or not. Fire away....

    Pretty good

    by man out of time

I'm a Rocky and Bullwinkle lover anyway, so I'm probably biased. Could've been great- Russo was astounding and criminally underused, Karen Sympathy should never had made it past the first draft- Bad actress, worse writing. Everything else was... Pretty good. Fun hidden jokes. "J" Ward indeed!

    First!

    by nitzsche

AOR&B had some great laughs. I thought Rene Russo did the best incarnation of the baddies. Many of the pop culture references were completely removed, which was a disappointment. Even though I wasn't laughing constantly, I had a consistent smile on my face throughout the whole thing. I thought the dialogue ruled. Totally funny narration and self-parody.

    Roger Rabbit's best

    by andymation

"Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" is the best live action/animated feature ever. But Harry, what about the "Alice In Cartoonland"-series and the Fleishers' "Out Of The Inkwell". They shouldn't be forgotten.

    Hate? Not quite

    by quint

I didn't hate it, but I was very let down. Given, I had high expectations of the film after the first trailer, which I thought was wonderful. "You will believe a squirrel can fly..." I know, I didn't spell squirrel right. Fuck it.... At least I don't think I spelled it right... damn word.
Anyway, I think the above poster was right about the Sympathy character. She was a cutie, but brought nothing to the movie, just acted as a black hole, sucking goodness from it. Loved the cameos, loved the score, hated 6o% of the gags, smiled at 20%, let out a light "huh" at 10% and actually laughed another 10%.
I also really loved Russo and Alexander as Natasha and Boris, respectively. They were great. DeNiro as fearless leader... yeah. Cool seeing him in the part, but he didn't do much.
I was really hoping for this one to be at the very least a guilty pleasure. I'm sorry it wasn't.

Rocky and Bullwinkle > 8 out of 10

    by burningbroadway

If you hated this movie in any way, then I truly feel sorry for you. Let's face it folks, some of us take this stuff a little too seriously...like when we get angry that they changed the X-Men's costumes...or when we want to send Buena Vista to HELL for not including a Japanese language track when the majority of us don't have Japanese as a first language...or even a second...it

    I loved it

    by anakin rocks

Well I saw ROCKY & BULLWINKLE last night with my friend/"nephew" Jacob, his mom and dad, and my mother. We all LOVED it and thought it was VERY, VERY funny and the most fun I've had in the movies in ages! Did it change my life or make me think about the human condition? No, but it made me laugh so hard that I couldn't always hear the dialogue. It was so much fun to see a COMEDY that was JUST FUNNY (and did not resort to talking about going to the bathroom as a plot point).

    R&B

    by nyb

I went to see R&B and Me, Myself and Irene last night. I have to say that I enjoyed these movies equally. R&B had such a level of sophistication to it, I was blown away. (Something MMI lacked) I mean, J. Ward was awesome, and the interactions between the Narrator and the characters were hysterical. I had a great time.

    Suspend reality

    by xthecrovvx

Im not going to review this film. I cant...i cant bring myself to do it, it's like being forced to bring a shotgun to your childhood friend's head. I mean, i could....i could point out how Bullwinkle was a bit flatter than normal....or how Fearless Leader, however geniusly(and frighteningly accurate) he was played by DeNiro, should've gotten more screen time, and lines, same with boris and natasha....or even how the narrator was, and still is one of the best characters....or how Karen Sympathy could've been used better than just "dramatic" wallpaper.....but i cant...because despite all of that, i just enjoyed this movie too damn much to care. I just sat in the theater, huge smile on my face like the 10 year old kid i once was, watching Boris and Natasha unwittingly get their asses kicked by Moose ans Squirrel. I enjoyed all the blaring puns strewn throughout (among the top ten, "Crymia River", "J Ward", and The Green Light House which i shouldve caught onto the first time i saw it, but instead took 10 minutes), i enjoyed the mix of reality and cartoon, done very well i might add.....and, well, it's Rocky and Bullwinkle for crying out loud! My only complaint is that i really would've loved to see a new Fractured Fairy Tale in front of the film, but hey, cant ask for everything, right? I imagine this movie isnt going to do much at the box office(come on, you have Mel Gibson, George Clooney, and a 6'7 moose. Do the math...), but somewhere out there, there are at least a couple thousand grown ups out there(aside from the ones who decide to drag their 10 year old kids to the movie, because they're cartoons, despite the fact that those kids have never seen an R&B cartoon in their lives, and wont understand the plot or characters until their parents show them on tape or something), who are going to look at The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle flashing on a marquee, smile, plop down the 5 bucks on a matinee, and walk out grinning like a school kid again. To anyone else, if you just saw one or two episodes of the cartoon, guys, just suspend reality for 90 minutes, pretend like movies like Roger Rabbit never happened(well, you cant, because of a joke fearless leader cracks early in the film :-) ), and just let go, become 8 years old again. Its a cartoon from beginning to end, even when it is reality.

    R&B Sucked!!!!!

    by archaeopteryx

While some here on this board liked THE ADVENTURES OF ROCKY AND BULLWINKLE movie, I can not degrade myself by saying it was a good movie. It was stupid and the plot was delivered in such poor light that it might as well have been muddy water. I mean the first part of the movie introduces the audience to the villains and then quickly (and I mean very quickly) throws them into the "real world" with some sorta "magic" TV/Hollywood contract scene that last about 3 mins. I mean come on! Talk about lack of sophistication in a movie. But wait, isn't this a kid's movie? That's right it is. Most adults who go see these kinds of movies expect a little more than a live-action cartoon. Yes, that's all this is: A live-action cartoon! It sucked, even if you think about it like a cartoon. It's one of those movies where you think you know what's gonna happen next but it is so stupid and 2-dimensional that you overthink everything and then it goes in the opposite direction because you blinked or something... I hate shit movies like this. I tried to go to sleep but I had a Coke to drink and couldn't. I even actually thought about walking out but then I felt like maybe there would be one part in it that would shine. I've seen bald heads that shine better than this movie. Out of a score of 10: 3 (This high only because Alexander played Boris well in true 1960 fashion.)

    Almost painful to watch

    by miserablebastard

I've loved these characters since I was a kid. The horrific puns, the goofy wordplay, and subtle humor... all of it. I bought all the video tapes, went to R&B film festivals, etc, etc.

Maybe it's because I love these characters and had high expectations, but I found this movie almost painful to watch. Taking my kids to the film yesterday, I was surprised at how many of the jokes fell flat. Painfully flat. "Can I leave the theatre before this gets more embarrassing" flat. Whenever DeNiro had a laugh line, the director inserted a long pause for audience laughter, so when it doesn't come it's twice as painful.

There are two problems with R&B: first is the fascination with insider humor (there were very few laughs in the first 20 minutes in the theatre I went to) and the second is the lame Karen Sympathy character, who is just boring when not being maudlin.

I think this movie would have played better if R&B's puns and subtle humor were placed within a fast-moving environment where the humor is almost tangential to the plot, rather than R&B's sitcom-like pacing, where you can almost feel where the laugh track is supposed to be.

As much as I wanted to like this movie, I just hated it. Sorry folks.

    Sleepy Hollow and Roger Rabbit

    by ah ha!

First, to Emil Minty who hated Sleepy Hollow. I've seen maybe only half-a-dozen films at the cinema this year, off the top of my head- Sleepy Hollow, Dogma, Gladiator, Mission Impossible 2, Me Myself & Irene and Fantasia 2000. Of those six, Sleepy Hollow was easily the best. It was the only one that was fast-paced enough to keep interesting, and not by flying through the plot. I hadn't seen any other versions of it before, so I didn't know the story, and I also liked the sometimes subtle, dark humour. Besides Fantasia, it was the only one of those films that didn't suck. And by the way, though it's been mentioned plenty of times, Roger Rabbit is one of the greatest films ever in my book. I'm currently getting an original full-sized movie poster framed, so I can bask in it's glory every fucking day.

    Hey Rocky...

    by tons of fun

While I was born over twenty years after the cancellation of this Jay Ward classic, I became a fan while R&B were in syndication in the early nineties on Nickelodeon.
And as a fan I have to say I enjoyed this film more than any other so far this year, especially ME, MYSELF & IRENE (terrible movie) and surprisingly more than CHICKEN RUN (Harry was right, fun flick to watch). It played as one long episode with better animation. Piper Perabo, who's acting wasn't great (but that may have been intentional), was fun to watch (and as a guy...fairly nice to look at too). Russo and Alexander did nearly perfect Boris and Natasha voices and De Niro did pretty good for hiself as well. The celebrity cameos were fun and even good. I particually liked Jonathan Winters (all three times). Overall, while my ramblings may be a bit uneven, the movie is not. Go watch it. Let that inner child loose and have fun for a change.

Lighten up and get a clue

    by usagibrian

Wrong films to compare in to, Harry (and others). ROGER RABBIT? B&B? SONG OF THE SOUTH? Fugedaboudit... This is a silly, choppy, punny, jumpy MOVIE version of the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. Period. Comparisons to other animated/live action matches are pointless (it's like which was the better action flick: CASABLANCA or BRINGING UP BABY). It has the strengths and weaknesses of the show without the cross cuts to Peabody and Fractured Fairy Tales to cover the plot holes. Yes, Karen Sympathy was weak, some of the stuff fell flat, tortured is a generous way the describe the "plot". So freaking what! The undelying concept was solid, the performances were fun, and it faithfully caught the feel of the searies in a different format (a lot of the time). Enjoy it for that or skip it. Oh, and despite everything, it is NOT a kid's movie (the four in the row in front of us last night did have a clue what was happening).

So BAD it made Roger Rabbit look GOOD!

    by irie

Roger Rabbit is an awful film, with a convoluted mish mash of a story, uneven acting, and mostly BAD animation. I hate that it NEVER stops moving. Everything is kind of "floaty" and it's shaded to look like bad airbrush. Rocy and Bullwinkle continue the tradition of mis-using animation (BAD animation) and color to try and hoodwink the audience into believing there's actually a STORY in the film they're watching. Just plain AWFUL--only this time, it's CG "floaty." Neither can compare to Mary Poppins. Never.

    If only...

    by jbtost

If only they had stuck with the original characters the movie would have been great! Rocky, Bullwinkle, Boris, Natascha, Fearless Leader and the Narrator were all dead on. The jokes were as corny as in the original series, and I loved it. The problem lies in all of the other characters. To a one they all sucked. There were a bunch of great actors on the screen turning in the worst performances I've ever seen. If you're going to bring the denizens of Frostbite Falls and Pottsylvania into the real world, then the real world that they enter should be the REAL WORLD. Not some human version of the cartoon. Or, if you want it to be a human version of the cartoon, then the actors should have reined in their performances and let the puns be the main source of humor. I mean what the Hell was Janeanne Garofalo doing? Why cast Jonathon Winters, the man of a thousand personalities, in three roles that are all the same? What were Kenan and Kel doing there? And Whoopy Goldberg? How did the Director let her get away with that reading? I don't know... it's disappointing, if they had only stuck with the original six...

Most fun I've had at the movies this summer!

    by cady

I've seen all three 4th of July openers. Not surprisingly, the best one was the least hyped: ROCKY AND BULLWINKLE was more clever and inventive than the other two combined. THE PATRIOT was corny, hokey and overwrought. THE PERFECT STORM was flat-out boring. Even the much-talked about storm sequence put me to sleep. Plus, the characters were so cardboard thin I didn't care what happened to them. Go see THE ADVENTURES OF ROCKY AND BULLWINKLE!

I received free passes to thursday's showing of this movie. I took the wee one and he loved every second of it, but then again he is four. I enjoyed him enjoying it. Let's face it, no one was expecting this to be Casablanca. It had some cute cameos and some inside yuks for the grown ups, but bottom line is it is a movie that is supposed to be bad, in a fun way.

    Strange, yet strangely cool

    by darthslater

Just got back from this flick, and I still can't get over how damn "weird" it was. Just really, really weird. The sequence where all the baddies start dancing, the Scandanavian prison guard, the green light house--this was one of the most surreal, completely insane movies I've ever seen. I don't know what the hell the screenwriter was smoking, but I want some of it for the next time I watch this movie. And I WILL watch this movie again, because faults be damned, it was still a lot of fun (miles above MI:2, MMI, Patriot, and most of the summer's other overhyped disasters). If you don't have a big goofy grin on your face during this movie, then you need to take yourself less seriously. All of you talkbackers who are complaining about a lack of plot are complete morons in my book. This is Rocky and Bullwinkle--what did you expect, the Crying Game? Schindler's List? This movie is SUPPOSED to be stupid; and what's more, it REVELS in its stupidity. Ninety minutes of goofy, completely bizzare fun, and Piper Perabo might be the most beautiful actress I've ever seen in my entire life. That right there is worth my five bucks any day of the week. Lighten up, get drunk, and go see this movie. You just might love it.

    Rocky & Bullwinkle ROCKED!!!

    by torchsong

The best testimonial about this movie I can give is my friend. While I'm a die-hard Rocky & Bullwinkle fan (have all the episodes, clothing, even the lame 90's Boris and Natasha movie), he was not, and was less than enthused about going to spend even matinee money on this film. The theater was pretty empty, a few kids, some other adults trying to recapture a little lost childhood, and that's about it. Needless to say, he spent most of the time talking about how much this movie was going to suck. By the time it was over, he ended up laughing at as much as I did, and formally apologized for all the shit he'd been giving me for months about wanting to see the movie. He finally understood it...Rocky and Bullwinkle, while cute cartoons, were never really for the kids. It aired at night back in the early 60's, and the gags were meant to go straight over the kids' heads. Everyone enjoyed Russo's portrayal of Natasha, but I think the real props go to Jason Alexander, who was a great Boris Badenov...I only wish they'd used him more. And the puns...the PUNS!!! Crymia River! Karen Sympathy! J Ward! THIS was what made the show what it was way back when. The only thing missing was a quick Fractured Fairy Tale or Sherman and Peabody to break up the storyline.
In short, if you didn't like this movie, I don't want to know what your idea of a good movie is...Rocky and Bullwinkle was everything I hoped it would be, and much more than what my friend was expecting. Sequel!

    by rjtapper

I only saw it today cuz I needed to kill some time before work, plus that Piper Perabo is quite a piece. I've only seen tiny parts of the original show, so I'm not a longtime fan or anything, but man oh man was this movie FUN! All the bad puns and inside jokes, all the self-parodying and goofy cameos(I think that mattress salesman was Billy Crystal, but the best came was definitely John Goodman), to the divine Piper Perabo. Some folks have been ripping her performance, but I thought it was exactly appopriate for the movie, cuz it was all sweet and goofy and charming and funny all at the same time. This is actually my favorite movie of the summer so far.

  • Seriously, I laughed a few times in this film. Sadly, it was mostly at someone saying 'crap'. I usually don't say things about how women look on film but, lord almighty, Rene Russo looked like the hottest woman on earth in every scene she was in... Admittedly, both Alexander and Russo had their voices down pat, but something seemed to be lacking with all the characters and their lines. I hate it when 'good' characters insult 'bad' characters who take the remarks as compliments... The first few times, it was cute, but they drug that scene on past the point of humor. True, little kids might like it, but I can't help but think of all other animated projects that could have been if not for the money wasted on this film... God... At least Battlefield Earth had some cooler effects and a better story line... (OUCH!!) If I had to watch another one of either of those two again, It'd be BE in a heartbeat. This is why animation isn't taken seriously in the US! Take your kids to Titan AE or Chicken Run!

I really enjoyed this one. It might help to be an old-school R&B fan as this was so true to the Jay Ward style. Like the show, some of the puns are just god-awful but for every groaner, there's usually a real laugh to follow it up. It's definitely a far better film than most of the disappointments this summer like M:I - 2.

Universal Made Me Close my Fan Site

    by paulleah

Jay Ward Productions gave me permission and their blessing to run a "Rocky for President" fan site in '96. They were really really nice.

When I asked them this year, they said it was OK, but had to clear it with Universal. Universal sent me a typical lawyer letter telling me that R&B were their property and that I could not use R&B even though it was just for fun with no advertising associated with it.

I will not be seeing their crappy movie, I mean, crappy "property". The letter is here..

The only redeeming thing about this movie is 22 year-old Piper Perabo. She's quite a hottie (she'll be dancing around the bar in Coyote Ugly later this year), but not enough to rescue this peace of Moose Crap. I went in hoping to find a really enjoyable comedy, but came out discouraged and insulted by the simplicity and stupidity of this unnecessary film. I don't even think it's a good kid film ... as the kids in the audience seemed confused and uninterested in the characters, plot and visual effects.

There wasn't a funny joke ever even shown in the trailers, and DeNiro's self parody "are you talking to me?" made me wanna gag. And Supertramp... *shudder* My GOD I hate that music. I laughed my ass off... but...

    by burninbullwinkle

I was the only one in the theater doing so. The main problem is that it's trying to be two films: The first is a subversive wacky Jay Ward film- this material is brilliant and worth the price of admission. The other film is a stupid, stupid childrens movie. Strangely, the most "grown up" (i.e. funniest) parts of the flick were the animated parts (R,B & the narrorator) and the dumb stuff came from the human characters. The original series is great for three reasons. 1. The fact that it was an absurdist satire on the cold war. 2. Rocky and Bullwinkles banter 3. The puns and wordplay. Let's face it folks. It wasn't the animation. The first aspect is more or less forgotten about. The last two are employed, but only the thrid is really used. Unfortunately, aside from some hysterical remarks of self-deprication (the Really Bad Television Network is renamed the Rocky and Bullwinkle Television Network. "No real difference," remarks Bullwinkle) most of them are kept to the background. But they were laugh out loud hilarious. Or am I the only one that found the car rental company's slogans deserved a large guffaw? The live-action stuff fell deservedly flat, though. R&B's characters were well written, but the perfect performances by Alexander, Russo and DeNiro were wasted. Piper Perabo was a joy to look at, but a pain to watch. (I don't think it was her fault, though. Almost every performance in it was cardboard) It would have been a nice contrast to the surroundings had she been allowed to play straighter like Ursula in the George of the Jungle adaptation. Now if it sounds like I'm bitching, I'm sorry. I really did enjoy the film, despite its flaws and will probably snag it when it comes out on DVD, I just wanted to say what could have been.

Ok R & B wasn't the best movie in the world, but it was a helleuva lot more funny then any Jim Carrey bullshit. My, wife dragged me to see MMI, and as usual Jim Carrey completely sucked, he's just not funny. At least I got a few laughs out of Moose and Squirrel.

And she's the only one in the film that not only worked in her role, but comes out of this shit fest with some degree of respect. It was fun. It was good. But it was not great. I am an ole school R & B fan from the 60's and it was great seeing this made with June Foray still alive. But it got a bit sappy in a way the original never did. I wish that Danny Devito did Boris instead of Jason Alexander and that Olympia Dukakis did Natasha rather than Rene Russo. De Niro was fun. And Piper Perado! Man, is she a ringer for Marla Solkoff or whatever from "The Practice" or what?

    Celebrities are above the law

That one line from the movie should prove how hilarious this movie is, and that it was not intended to be a kiddie flick at all......it's a satire.

    FUNNY AS YOU CAN GET

I went to this movie with two freinds, who i needed to drag to it, bacause they thought it would suck. But during the movie they were both cracking up along with me. This movie is beyond funny. It has corny jokes ( but purposly corny) that are obvious even to the most casual of observers and it has some very subtle histarical jokes mixed in too. Most of the other people in the theatre were adults taking there kids but they were laughing much harder. I highly reccomend this too anyone who has a speck of humor in them. From ages 5-80
