Hey Yo, Draven here.

THR is reporting that SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE star, Dev Patel, is in early negotiations for the lead role in Neill Blomkamp’s third film, CHAPPIE.

Blomkamp has ELYSIUM coming out next month and from the early buzz, it sounds like it is going to be another late summer winner like DISTRICT 9. So anything coming from Blomkamp is worth paying attention to and he is one of the best (and most interesting) young filmmakers we have. (He is only 33!)

CHAPPIE is going to be based on his 2004 short film, TETRA VAAL, which we have right here:

So the short film looks a lot like DISTRICT 9 crossed with ROBOCOP. Obviously Blomkamp has his themes and we can see a lot of those in the trailers for ELYSIUM and in this short film. I like that he beats to his own drum and is finding new perspectives and ways to look at these themes. I also like Dev Patel a lot and I feel like he has been improving as an actor, especially when I compare his work in SLUMDOG to what he did on the first season of THE NEWSROOM.

This is a project that I am certainly going to follow and it’s exciting that the script is reportedly already written, which means there might not be a four year wait like there has been with ELYSIUM.

What do you guys think?
