Howdy do, everyone, Papa Vinyard here.
Today, shooting has commenced on HARD DRIVE, a buddy-movie actioner that stars John Cusack and Thomas Jane. The film's plot has Cusack's shady thief looking for a getaway driver in Australia. When he comes upon Thomas Jane's washed-up Formula One veteran, he enlists him on a heist that, of course, goes to shit, forcing the two to team up and elude the cops utilizing Jane's abilities behind the wheel. The team-up of Cusack and Jane, both reliable, underused actors with a hand at banter, has the potential for some serious buddy movie sparks. But the real kicker for this project is that it's being directed by B-movie legend Brian Trenchard-Smith.
For those of you who are unaware of Trenchard-Smith's qualifications, he helmed Ozploitation classics STUNT ROCK and BMX BANDITS (starring a young Nicole Kidman), as well as shit like LEPRECHAUN 3, LEPRECHAUN 4: IN SPACE, NIGHT OF THE DEMONS 2, and MEGIDDO: THE OMEGA CODE 2. To my knowledge, he has yet to direct a film with the star power of this one, so it is yet to be seen whether he can mix his ability to depict anarchic automobile mayhem on a limited budget with the natural talents of his leads. Personally, I think this combo gives this project a great sense of unpredictability and excitement that it probably wouldn't have had otherwise, and I am looking forward to seeing a kick-ass genre flick with Trenchard-Smith, Cusack, and Jane's names on it.
