Gabriel Byrne and STAR WARS EPISODE 2
Hey folks, Harry here. For a long time have we watched this one. Always wondering if this one would climb aboard. Mid July of last year (Click Here To Read) we reported that Gabriel Byrne was in preliminary talks to take a part in the upcoming Star Wars film. However, over eager speculators were both refuting this and claiming that it was a done deal. Well... The IRISH STAR newspaper has recently interviewed Gabriel Byrne, and it's looking like Byrne at least has the offer on the table. That doesn't mean he's signed (it also doesn't mean that he's just not being coy, and that he has already signed) quite yet. But the last quote I include down here you will note sounds like it is HIGHLY LIKELY that he'll accept. The original story can be found at this location. Also a special thanks goes out to a StellarMom for the tip!
"The people from Star Wars called the other day to offer me something, but I don't know what it is yet," confirmed Byrne. "It's probably already been announced on the Internet, but I still don't I know myself."
However hinting that he may well take up the offer he said: "My children are too young to see this (Moon For The Misbegotten), so they'd probably prefer me to do a Star Wars Picture." The Irish Star newspaper contributed to this story.

Byrne, another brilliant actor connected to Ep 2? I don't fancies his chances at getting too big a part. What I want to know is, will Ric Olie(actor Ralph Brown) be returning? If so I wonder if Lucas has seen any of the LOCK, STOCK TV series, Ralph work as the Crime Lord named 'Miami Vice' may convince the bearded one to let Ric join with the Hutts and run a vice ring.
-
Liam Neeson....Schindler's List, Michael Collins, Darkman etc etc...
Ewan McGregor....Trainspotting, Shallow Grave.....Sam Jackson...Pulp Fiction...need we say more....Terence Stamp....The Limey, Superman II etc.... IT DOESN'T MATTER PEOPLE. TPM wasted each and every one of them through excruciatingly bad dialogue and ludicrous beyond-childish exposition. Lucas will make a bollox of this film again. Christopher Lee, Christopher Walken, Sam Jackson, Gabriel Byrne...they'll all be wasted. There is absolutely NO POINT in getting excited about this. Man, Gabriel Byrne as a Dark Jedi? Fucking excellent idea. Gabriel Byrne as a Dark Jedi with tyre-throat behind the camera? Good night Vienna folks. If Ep. II is any good, I'll eat my own underpants with a spot of soy sauce and a tantalising side of duck pate. Nuff said. -
Guys, if Lucas was in talks to hire Laurence Olivier, Cary Grant and the young Marlon Brando I wouldn't be impressed, because they'd still deliver lousey performances without a God Damned SRIPT. You know that word, Georgie? SCRIPT. S and C and R and I and P and T. Tattoo the word on the insides of your eyelids - SCRIPT. Are you listening to me? Am I making myself clear?

Once again when talking about Stamp, it's THE LIMEY and SUPERMAN
by brian depalma
What about his superior turns in THE COLLECTOR, FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD and even PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT?
-
Thats a bit of ridilculous quibble, isn't it? The context of my post was that all of the above actors have been in some damn fine films. Which films I mentioned is completely irrelevevant. I have seen neither The Collector nor Madding Crowd, but I'll take your word for it. Priscilla was over-rated. My point was that you could line up a cast for EpII that makes the current Ocean's Eleven ensemble look like a group of handicapped extras in the new Brian Levant movie....It wouldn't matter. The script will suck because doughnut-gullet can't write. The acting will suck because he has absolutely no fucking idea what a good performance IS. And Binks will once again bastardize our screens like a veritable tornado of human excrement, sent from the Seventh Circle of Hell by Beelzeebub who has a chronic case of piles and is really fucked off. Know what I mean?
-
But a while ago there was a lot of Stamp stuff in talkbacks & it was pretty obvious nobody had seen the man in anything but SUPERMAN II and THE LIMEY. You were just making a passing comment and some pent up aggression spewed from my finger tips. No offence.

I loved THE PHANTOM MENACE. James Berardinelli's review at movie-reviews.colossus.net says it all. I saw it three times in the theater and again when it came out on video. I am not blind to its faults, but neither am I blind to its extraordinary accomplishments, as so many others seem to be. And, although performance has never been at the center of the Star Wars universe, I hugely enjoy the presence of Liam Neeson, Ewan MacGregor (and his dead-on Alec Guiness impression), Natalie Portman, and (above all) Pernilla August, as well as the thoroughly enjoyable vocal contribution of Brian Blessed. I would love to see Gabriel Byrne in Episode 2, and I have no doubt that if he is I will enjoy him in whatever capacity he appears. This is good news. And I don't care what anybody says about this post.
-
Splinter was in the Ninja Turtles movie, and he went into Tisa Farrow's eye in Zombie; and he'll be wasted is EP2. Nuff' said.
-
Your post smells like my crotch. (there do ya care now?)
-
Christopher Lee, Jimmy Smits, Christopher Walken,Ryan Phillipe, Colin Hanks, and now Gabriel Byrne. Am I forgetting anyone? It seems like it could be an all-star cast, if things keep going the way they are.
-
I'm sure that Smits recently denied that he was in the film - or did I dream it?

Who needs a script, actors, plot, characters, etc? We've got CGI
by jetset-jimbo
I agree with re_Veers about the actor stuff, but everyone's got to admit that the bearded farmboy can always pull off a decent action sequence. Maybe its about time he got Kasdan involved at the script end of things.
Also, does anyone else remember that Lucas was gonna get some of his buddies to direct Eps 2 and 3. I can remember hearing David Fincher's name being mentioned more than once in the British press (and Luc Besson's, for that matter). Anyone else think we lost out on the two best Star Wars films yet when Lucas decided to do them himself? -
I was waiting for someone to flame my post. Now I can get on with my life. (P.S. Nope, I still don't care. Or I do care. Wait. I still care about the Gabriel Byrne news and Star Wars in general, but I don't care what anybody thinks... oh, never mind.)
-
I've already posted this suggestion on another board, but I figure that I'll copy it and post it a couple of places, just so that Harry sees it. I have a suggestion to improve the site even further. Would it be possible for you to publish weekly talkback forums for all of the major releases? Right now, I would like to argue with people about Titan A.E. and Shaft, but I've got nobody to talk to. And next week I'm gonna want to B.S. about Chicken Run and Me, Myself and Irene. It doesn't have to be anything fancy; just a simple page for each of the summer's major releases. Let people argue, discuss, critique, and praise each new movie. Not only will it be fun for us rabid posters who have nothing better to do all day, but it will also help people decide whether or not to see new movies (there's still a few currently out there that I haven't made my mind up about yet). Anyways, I think it would be a cool addition to an already cool site. Thoughts and comments from everyone else? Harry? Father Geek?
-
It smells like aniseed. So it wasn't a flame it was, like, a compliment. So there.
-
Now I have to go back to waiting for someone to flame me!
-
Why not have a generalized TalkBack section where people can post comments, rants, etc., on movie and other entertainment matters of general interest? I've suggested it before. Maybe someday it'll happen.

How could you be so stupid blahblahblahblah the Phantom Menace blahblahblah. So there.

Lucas was nominated for Best Director for consecutive films that he did (American Graffiti and Star Wars). David Fincher and Luc Besson, if I remember correctly, have yet to be nominated even once! That right should show you that Lucas is more qualified to direct than either of them. Secondly, Lucas also received nominations for both of those films for screenwriting. So, you can't argue that Lucas doesn't know how to write or direct, because he has been nominated for those honors before. Some of you suggested to bring Kasdan on. Remember what happened when you brought Lucas and Kasdan (two award nominated writers) on the same script: Return of the Jedi. Though I love Jedi, I prefer TPM. You guys suggestions just don't make sense. It shows that you all have short memories. I believe I saw a character analysis for the main characters of TPM which puts Harry's pathetic one year review to shame. It even blows away his attempts to show character development in ID4 during his comments on MI:2. If I could remember where I read it, I'd tell you. But, at the very least, there's more to TPM than anyone, even Harry, has touch on yet.
-
Lucas needs to get the best talent
he possibly can. Only the
greatest actors will be able to
render his dialogue as passably
mediocre (e.g., Liam Neeson)
rather than excruciatingly painful
(e.g., Jake Lloyd). If he gets
the best talent, then Ep. II will
be merely dull. If he doesn't,
it will make our ears bleed. -
The official site says they start shoooting in OZ on the 26th. Unless he is not needed until the location shoots in Italy, Spain or Tunisia... He better accept soon.
-
Now that Battlefield Earth has come out can we please leave TPM alone. Honestly, given a choice of one of the two for the rest of your life, which would you pick? BE HONEST, Not assholes.
-
You know, I think the fact that so many people hate TPM actually increases my enjoyment of it somehow. I don't know why.
-
Ah, a most excellent animation today, sir. I haven't had a chance to post in quite a while, but I simply must take a moment to express my surprise and amusement upon seeing the dead, wrapped in plastic Harry Palmer up in the corner...Guess I'd better say something on topic: Gabriel Byrne is a welcome presence in any film, and with a cast as good as the one already signed on, my expectations are rising. As many of you know from previous posts, I loved TPM, but I'm thinking this one might be even better.
-
I liked it a whole lot. Seen it at least 4 times. Does that rain on you parade?

Go to http://movie-reviews.colossus.net/archives/ and click on TPM. This is the only halfway adequate review of TPM I have ever read.

TPM is a cross between Return of the Jedi & the Ewok Adventures.
by gsolo
...and if you like that sort of thing well then I'm rather envious. Personally I like SW and Empire, then my imagination completes the story.
-
are wookies and are kicking the crap out of the storm troopers. Then am I happy. Actually Empire is the best.
-
The British tabloids are reporting that Ron Jeremy will play a villain in SW2. The character is believed to be named Darth Schlong, and will be part of the love triangle with Amidala and Anakin. The Hedgehog is makin' a comeback!
-
in HEAT magazine they said ewan has had his hair peroxided for ep2. wow - ican tell your impressed
-
Ya just had to go and mention Binks didn't ya? You BASTARD! Now I'm dreading Ep2 again.
I think Harry should replace Jar Jar in the movie. He could be Jar Jar's slightly less aquatic cousin, Tigger Binks! Yeah...that would rock!
God I need another drink. -
Man, I cannot believe you're dragging out the Oscar defense for Lucas. As much as I love Star Wars, I'll be the first to admit that David Fincher and Episode 3 are a match made in heaven, or whatever that planet where angels come from is called. Lucas was nominated for an Oscar? So what. Forrest Gump WON an Oscar. Phil Collins won an Oscar. Oscars mean nothing....By the way, Harry, love the Twin Peaks animation.
-
so what if lucas has been nominated for some oscars? Some of the greatest directors of all time have NEVER been nominated. and as much as I hate Return of the Jedi, to argue that bringing in Kasdan to help with a rewrite is a mistake. Kasdan also wrote the screenplay for Empire and Raiders, the two make a great team. Finally, the problem with lucas isn't that he isn't talented enough, or that he can't write or direct. He is very talented, and can write and direct. His problem is he has TOO MUCH CONTROL over his own stuff now, after empire, he took over the producing reigns because he didn't like someone telling him no and what has been the results since? Return of the Jedi and Phantom Menace.
what Lucas needs is the thing that is usually the kiss of death for other filmmakers, the intervention of a major studio.
someone that has the balls and the power to say "Hey George, this Jar-Jar character, we don't like him. How about making the guy a wookie instead?"
-
Who gives a smelly, maggot-infested shit!?!?!?!?! Get a fucking life. This site ruins movies for people. It taints the movie-going experience because you know we can't stay away you piece of stanky ass munchage!!! Jar Jar must fucking DIE!!!!! GAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
The Oscars are fucking bullshit and whether or not anybody was nominated for or won an Academy Award is no fucking measure of the caliber of director nor quality of his work. Don't use Oscars to define who's better than who. I mean, goddammit, where would Kubrick be?

When are you people going to learn that movies are made for the MASSES! Especially ones of the nature of the Star Wars Saga. They are for adults, children, families, etc... Please just lighten up and quit your constant bitching. If you want Tarrantino, rent Pulp Fiction and shut the fuck up! As for the pro-Star Wars fans...you guys are the only ones who seem to know what the hell you're talking about. Enjoy watching and re-watching TPM and look forward to Episode II. Don't think that these idiotic naysayers are making YOU look like fools with this little "flaming" habit of theirs. Oh and by the way, take a shot at me any of you...I'll nail your ass...and spell the response correctly unlike you big, fat, out of shape computer geek fucks that sit there with your mountain dew and your empty greasy pizza box from last nights "gaming" session with the friends you spent your prom night with because you couldn't get a fucking date. Now go listen to Manson (or probably Hanson) and whack off to some computer generated Asian chick and SHUT THE FUCK UP! Oh and just to make this legit...I'm sure Mr. Byrne will do fine! May the force be with you all, except for you fuckups.

But anybody heard about Event Horizon 2 ?
When are we gonna talk about Alien 5 ?

Byrne better be a bad guy: Also, Lay the fuck off Jar-Jar.
by critical mass
Gabriel Byrne would be cool as a pre-Empire General or Grand Moff type. If he takes the role, I hope he gets a juicy part. Now, on to Jar-Jar news. All of you Jar-Jar haters out there better fucking well STAY Jar-Jar haters when he becomes a hero in the next film. Haven't you pokes ever heard of a character arc? Jar-Jar starts out as an outsider to the surface world of Naboo. He ends up as an accidental hero by the end. Common sense states that Jar-Jar will be less bumbling, less irritating, and more worthy of hero status in the next film. It's so funny to watch all of this Jar-Jar bashing. It's like the classic mob-mentality at work again. It's pathetic.
-
My god. Have you people heard yourself. This sucks, that sucks, you f***, I can't believe you said that, blah, blah, blah. The first two movies kicked ass. The third was okay. But you know what? It stopped working. The crowd that Lucas is aiming at today (that would be the mass market)is not the Star Wars geeks who frequent this board. So you know what, you think he's got too much control...you think he's going to ruin the movie? Well tough crap, they're his movies to ruin so just don't see them. I don't even believe half the people here saw TPM. You probably just read that guy A hated it, so I do to, because I'm a flamer and people respect the fact that I'm a geek who sits behind a computer taking shots at movies...because I'm never going to do anything with my life but work at the WAWA.

I was at a friends house on Saturday. At his house were a ton of kids. I had to ask the question, "What to you guys think of Star Wars TPM?" That set off a shock wave of "Man that was the best!", "That movie was great!" and many other voices speaking the praise of that movie. EVERYBODY there loved it. Some more than any of the other movies. I realized that the thing with the movie is that we have mostly all grown up and lost that innocence. Not only that but we here, the self proclaimed "fan-boys" are in reality pseudo-intellectuals. Kids love this film in the same way that we as kids loved the first films. I think the only person who has a valid argument over TPM sucking is the person who hates the whole series. If you got enjoyment out of the first ones, there is no reason (other than maybe Jar Jar) why the 3 new ones should be something you loath. The first three had shitty scripts and dialogue, you can't argue the lack of originaltiy. But they worked because of the sheer giddyness that was carried through out the whole thing. To the argument of wasting great actors. Only re VEERS has the right to bitch about T. Stamp. Everybody else does use THE LIMEY and SUPERMAN II as examples of his work. I do believe that THE LIMEY came out after TPM. So all you had to go on was S II. Everybody else carried thier roles just fine. I look forward to all of the new movies (a hell of alot more than I do "The Matrix 2"). I think most people really do also. It's is just cool to hate TPM and to say that Lucas sucks. He is a money hungry slug, but he does NOT suck. So kids, flame on.
-
Excuse me, that film might have been shite because of the presence of Mr. Swarzeicantspellhisname and a director whose previous accomplishments (if you want to call them that) included "2010", but Gabriel Byrne was excellent as the Prince of Darkness. Its a similar argument with Episode I (and the original Star Wars films for that matter) ... great actors (minus Mark Hamil & Jake Lloyd) being wasted with a really shit script that has about as much intelligence as a preschool playground conversation. Is Lucas a total mongoloide? Is he in a coma when he writes this stuff? Or maybe its because he writes them in a 20 year old card binder with a #2 Pencil ... whatever it is, Star Wars has been totally ruined with its horrible dialogue ... and for those of you who stick by Georgey's excuse that "this is how fairytails are written" - witness THE MATRIX ... similar plot line - one unsuspecting normal man from a normal world by his own standards is thrown into another completely different one and is pretty much "the one" destined to save this new disfunctioning world ... that was one of the greatest films of all time - I know you might not think so now, but that film will be disected and studied over and watched over and over again for years to come. IT had good dialogue. IT had good cinematography (something Star Wars also lacks - explain that one Georgy - is that how fairy tales are shot?). And IT had better special effects. We all know what will happen in Episode II from the endless rumors and we all know who will play what and we all know that it will have a shitty script again ... so why are we wasting our valuable time talking about this? Give it up and go find some REAL films worthy of your $9. Just remember when it comes out and then go see it. And just see it once - believe me, from personal experience, the second or third showing will not make you believe that there is actually something worthwhile watching in it. Have I struck a chord of common sense?

That's right. When you crave a mid-night snack of left-over Kentucky Fried Knowles, you don't want to face freezer burn. That's why the innovators at Zip-Lock have pioneered the Ain't It Fresh freezer bag with an extra wide mouth to accomodate web film critics ranging from 200-350 lbs. Big appetites demand big freezer bags, that's why more Americans demand Zip-Lock!

I just sent a long email to a TalkBacker who wrote to me privately, in which I detailed at length some of the things I loved about TPM. It's too long to post here, but if anyone else wants it, I'll send it to them privately. At some point I'll probably rewrite it into a review and put it on a film review website I'm developing.
-
This may be a silly question, but I thought I read somewhere that the Star Wars saga was nine episodes, and that Episodes 4, 5, and 6 were the middle ones. If so, has there been any (very early) rumblings about concluding the series? Or does anyone know how it turns out?
-
*Movies* are not made for the masses. Yes, certainly most of what we talk about here is mainstream cinema. However, there are films that are not meant for everyone. There are people out there who do not belong in the theater for movies like Buffalo 66, Gummo, or The Filth and the Fury. You know who they are. If you don't, then likely you're one of them. I might sound a bit snooty and elitist, and I'd be glad to talk with a Fangoria-subscriber about the deeper meaning of "Crumb", but to be perfectly honest, that's not gonna happen.
-
You can't take from us the things we love about TPM. Plus you're boring. I wonder what this site would be like if everybody had your missionary zeal to haunt TalkBacks for all the movies they didn't like explaining to the fans why they were stupid to like them. Pretty tiresome I think. If you didn't like TPM, go in peace and watch other movies you like better.
-
Casting means nothing if Episode 1 has taught us anything. Script is everything - but then again - how do you explain away midi-clorians, Jar-Jar, etc... I guess you can't - so I guess it'll just suck.
-
I love reading posts from people who piss moan about how much they hate TPM or ROTJ, and then begin to dissect them so thoroughly that you know they've seen them both 50 times. If you hate it so much why do you know it so well? You guys talk all this shit about how if so and so does this, or this or that happens you'll not go see the movie.HAH! You will be 1st in line, you may only see it 10 times instead of 20 or 30, but you'll be there, I'll be there, and you'll hate it so much that you have to see it again just to convince yourself you really do hate it.Hell it may take 4 or 5 viewings to realize the full scope of hatred you'll have for this movie. Then you'll spend 3 years until E3 comes out bitching about how much you hated it, and know that you'll hate the next one!But if anyone asks you if you're a Star Wars fan you'll smile and say "HELL YES!"
-
And TPM has many other flaws as well. But many of us also see other things that you are apparently blind to, and it is these that make TPM great.
-

STAMP kicked ass in Alien Nation too! don't forget that one...
by wheelie
-
Listen, I like TPM for a)its music b) its fight sequences ... and thats about it - but what are the innumerous things you love about this film? You must have the intellect of a gardening tool if you are intrigued by character development and witty dialogue in TPM ... If you suggest that I should put away my "missionary zeal" and go and watch films that I like, why don't you stop propagandering this film that 90% of the American population (and every European I know) think sux in many more ways that one, and go get your shite pan&scan version of the film and sit in your little room decorated with millenium falcons on bedsheets and wallpaper and watch it in seclusion? Just remember to come out once in a while and take a shower and eat ... but if you don't we could probably form a sitcom on the UPN and we would give you a million dollars after watching TPM 100 consecutive times in the seclusion of your bedroom ...
-
All of these great actors are not being "wasted". The movie is about the story. If the story was changed based on the fact that a famous person was playing a small role, that would suck horribly. They're not wasted, they're used to further the story. A character is a character, no matter who is playing that character.
-
verbal 2000. Let me tell you a thing or two about the Matrix...
If I wanted to see a good movie about a guy who is suddenly revealed the truth behind the world he knows is a lie manufactured by some weird race of people, then I would rent Dark City, Open Your Eyes or The Animal Future!!...If I want to see a crappy let's-copy-john-woo direction and Keanu Reeves amaizing acting skills (sarcastic, of course), then I'll rent the Matrix!!!...the matrix was visually ok, but it is too much like star wars for my taste (in the character sense, because in everything else, SPECIALLY fx, Star Wars is far superior)...
Let me illustrate this for you...
Morpheous is practically Obi-Wan, only without the great acting of Alec Guiness who actually made you think "hey, this guy is talking about all this weird stuff but I can still believe what he says". Trinity is only the shameful shadow of what Leia was. Neo is nowhere near Luke Skywalker...The agent was Vader, even though he wasn't damn near as cool as Vader is. By star wars villian standards, that guy would be a low rate stormtrooper.
It takes a lot more to make a star wars movie than to make a matrix movie. In star wars your imagination has to be pushed beyond the limits of what has been done, and that is something the matrix lacks...the ability to surprise the audience (at least an intelligent one)...for all of you people wanking over the camera moves and the "direction" of special effects sequences, just watch the TGI Friday's commercial and see those techniques put to use in a proper way. Also, when talking about music, there is no comparison between John William's beautiful score and the Matrix crappy techno-disco-pop or whatever the hell it was...
But if you don't believe me and want to wait for The Matrix Part II - The Agents Strike Back! then go right ahead...Just let me give you a little spoiler on this one...
Near the end (which will be a cliffhanger), the agent slowly offers his hand to Neo, saying..."Morpheus never told you what happened to your father..." to what Reeves replies "He told me enough!...he told me you killed him!"
then the agent solemnly adds "No Neo...I am your father"...then he throws himself down the nearest shaft...YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST, OK?
and by the way, about Gabriel Byrne I think he will work just fine as a good guy and NO, the star wars saga won't have 9 episodes as originally intended by lucas -
Okay. First off, what do you mean movies aren't made for the masses? Of course they are. Movies are made to make money, regardless of the bullshit 'trying to get a message across' nonsense every up and coming director pumps out. They use that line of shit to hold onto their 'artist integrity' until the big money comes in. Maybe the films you spoke of aren't intended for wide circulation well neither is porn. Still it's all about money.
As for verbal 2000, what are you talking about that 90% of everyone hated it? Maybe you and your fanboy buddies didn't like it, but you know what... the money keeps coming in. As for Europe, well no offense, but I'm not going to rely on you or anyone else on this (or any other) website to tell me how anyone, other than themselves, has reacted to a movie.
Give me a break. The movie made a ton of cash, an enormous amount of people saw it more than once. I mean are we suppose to disregard that just because you didn't care for it.
It's really too bad if you didn't enjoy the show. I learned a long time ago that their are movies I see because I expect a piece of art, and there are movies I see when I just want to be entertained. Well TPM fits in the latter category and it did the job nicely.
Durke out.
-
Thank You Coffee, it's nice to see that there are still some people who understand that these movies aren't made exclusively for them.Don't get me wrong, I hate JarJar as much as anybody, but I envision SW universe where enroute to the darkside a pissed off Anakin sodomises Jar Jar with the hot end of a lightsaber! But it aint gonna happen.Yes the Star Wars universe in my head may be better then what ends up on the big screen, but I don't care about things like merchandising, cross promotions, or billshit like that.As far as medichlorins go it's not that bad of an idea, like Coffee said that would be an useful plot device for the clone story-line.It could even tie into the long lived rumor that Obi-wan is a clone, whatever I like every one else will have to wait and see.I'm not saying that TPM was perfect, but if you are a true fan, you felt the same thing I did the first time you saw it in the theaters. The opening sequence, just to see "A long time ago..." come on the screen. That alone was worth the price of admission.
-
It just so happens that earlier today I composed a list of things I love about TPM for another TalkBacker who wrote to me privately, much more civilly than you have I might add, saying that he was happy I had enjoyed it and that he had wanted to enjoy it but had been disappointed. What I wrote is much too long for TalkBack, but I would be happy to forward it to your UserID email address, if it's an account you use. I'm not "propagandering" (sic) anything, I am expressing simple and unadorned enthusiasm for something I happen to like. My motives are self-explanatory. Yours are a complete mystery to me. When I see AICN items relating to movies or franchises I don't care for, I just go on to the next item. I can't imagine the impulse that drives a person to download an item he doesn't care about, read a news story he's not interested in, and write a TalkBack proclaiming his disgust with the whole proceedings. It's like an item on the Harry Potter TalkBack from someone announcing that he "could care less about this movie." Well then why are you here at all? And that's my question for you. I must say it's kind of you to deign to visit the benighted but naively happy Star Wars TalkBack pages with your critical but bitter wisdom, but the fact is, you're unappreciated here. You're casting your pearls before swine. A smart person would take it somewhere else or change his tune. Not that I'm telling you what to do; it's a free country. Best, SDG

It good to come to AICN and hear all the moronic, whining geeks complaining about Episode 1 and Episode 2 again. Christ, get over it. I'd like to see what some of your half-assed screenplays look like. Hey Splinter, I hope you like the taste of cotton, ya little dweeb.
-
Listen, everyone keeps reminding us that TPM was just a popcorn movie ... and I agree - so was The Matrix ... I like popcorn movies - just saw Pitch Black here in Europe the other day - good piece of entertainment. I was satisfied at the end of it. TPM - I was not. The movie just sucked (period). Don't think I'm some stuck-up snobbo who likes bizarre French black and white independent films - I despise them. About the Matrix music - I will not buy the soundtrack - but music was not a central part of that film as it is in Star Wars - possibly because it is trying to boost an already shit film ... I'm sorry, Agent Smith is much more exciting that than buffed-up trash can that is Darth Vader ... I bet you guys shudder at the sound of James Earl Jones going, "This is CNN" ... Hugo Weaving was much more intimidating and cool than Vader (period). As for "the money that keeps coming in" ... Mr. Lucas and his geeks on his little ranch have somehow used the original films which somehow appealed to the public - perhaps this is why Americans are perceived everywhere as a bunch of gluttoneous, fat, stupid mongoloides who are obsessed with money and Star Wars - and hyped up the new one which was much worse than the atrocities that were Episodes 4,5 and 6. But I think that the original 150 million dollars or so was spent by fans of the original (aforementioned fat mongos) and the rest after that was spent by little kiddies wanting to see the movie where the lightsaber on their b-day cake came from ... Anyway, I predict that the next two will not nearly be as successful as Episode I and the originals - people did not like Episode I. And don't tell me that the sequels always make less money : Toy Story 2, Austin Powers 2 anyone? And then there are those of you who criticize me with the "oh, he didn't like the idea at all"... WRONG! - if I had gotten a summary of the film with sketches and ideas I would have been very excited about the film. I would be waiting and waiting for it. But ultimately my problem is that George Lucas is not a talented man. He just isn't good enough. You've all been conned. Who else wants to take me on?
-
What seems to escape all of you is that lucas wrote episode I to appeal to 6 to 10 year olds so that in 6 years when episode III makes its release they will all be 16 year olds thus making them the #1 movie going demographic. All of you are so caught in your self-righteousness to realize how old you were when ANH was released and admit that it had some pretty bad writing and some of the corniest lines, scenes in movie history. I love SW and I love TPM because i take it for what it is, a SW movie.
-
Lucas is not a talented man?It takes way more talent to create STAR WARS than it does to create THE MATRIX...
I don't see why you think of the soundtrack and movie as separate things...a soundtrack is suppossed to add to the movie and it's supposed to work with the movie.
I can see you like popcorn movies, that's why you liked the Matrix. I love quality and lasting cinema, and let me tell you, the Matrix won't be remembered simply because it is DATED. it will have no relevance whatsoever in the future of movies. The Matrix didn't change the way we look at movies. Star Wars did. and it will continue to change it for the better. I think Star Wars is high up there in movie heaven with A Clockwork Orange, Dr.Strangelove, 2001:A Space Odyssey, Fight Club and so on...
I think that's why you only saw the marketing aspect of Episode I and the marketing aspect of Matrix, and you liked the Matrix more...the fact that one of the characters is in a pepsi can doesn't make it a good or a bad movie. -
I really like it. I love it when Luke faces down his father and Palpatine. I'm not ashamed to say it. OK, so the Ewoks are crap. They are a flaw near to the end of a fun film. I have a fast forward button. I don't care. Phantom Menace is different as that has a hell of a lot of flaws to go through. Jar Jar, medichlorians, Anakin...I would be glad about Byrne being in EP2 if only I didn't feel he would be wasted. Oh well, it could be good...
-
Hey jackass, maybe the reason Americans are so obsessed with Star Wars is that we actually send people into space. When was the last time any of you toothless monkeys made it into space! The only reason you know anything about whats out there is because we tell you!And as for all Americans being fat and lazy, maybe some are, but look at what you fucks consider the best merry old england has to offer!Prince Charles? a fucking inbred. The Queen? oh yeah she's a good physical specimen. And what do you look like bitch? Pushin 300lbs I bet.Still a virgin?I'd place money on it!So lastly, let me put this in the vernacular of your smoggy little island--PISS OFF!!!
-
Gabriel Byrne to star in episode 2?
Sometimes it seems Harry makes this shit up to have an exlusive "scoop".
So whats next? How about Steven Seagal , i -

by verbal2000
By the way fuckface - I'm American. That's right. Born in Queens, New York and lived there all my life up till about 3 years ago - I've lived around Europe since, with frequent trips back to the States ... I'm 145 pounds actually, muscles not really built up. I know some English people yes. If you show a prejudice against them, thats your problem. I just hope you don't let your true feelings about African Americans, Orientals and other minorities get out into TalkBack ... "Hey jackass, maybe the reason Americans are so obsessed with Star Wars is that we actually send people into space" ... hmmm ... the Russians actually sent humans into space first - Yuri Gagarin ... whoops, am I giving a stupid American a history lesson? And I guess you lost your bet - I'm not a virgin. I think that you need serious psychiatric treatment immediately - or just a BigMac - that should solve your problem.
-
This is what I've been waiting for! We who liked TPM speaking up. TPM is just simply a visual masterpiece. When I saw the underwater Gungan city I was sold. Movies are a primarily visual medium, I love plot driven movies, but sometimes a movie is so visually dazzling that the storyline takes a backseat...And I'm OKAY with that. Movies like 2001 A Space Odyssey (a million bucks to anyone who can figure out wha that was about), Blade Runner, What Dreams May Come, Flash Gordon (1980), Dick Tracy and THE PHANTOM MENACE are so visually beautiful that I can overlook small flaws. The cotumes, the spaceships, the planets in TPM were PERFECTLY realized. The visuals were different but totally cohesive. The Destroyer Droids, The Naboo Starfighters, The Quenns Ship, Darth Maul's Tie Fighteresque ship had my jaw dropping. Never before has a fantasy world been presented to us on screen as completely as TPM. When I want deep characters and emotional depth I pop in THE COLOR PURPLE...when I want to see a planet completely covered by a city I watch TPM. And the Podrace... O MY GOD! Alone it's a perfect SHORT FILM. Being an artist I can appreciate the sheer talent of Lucasfilm. TPM is a landmark film guys, I can't bring myself to flame such a drop dead gorgeous film. Their are MANY different kinds of GOOD movies folks. I'll say it again TPM is a visual masterpiece.
And one more thing... If everyone hated it and saw it once it woul account for the big box office draw (423 million) but how do you account for the HUGE VIDEO success of this film? Somebody is buying this movie, I think its a lot more well received than a lot of the Talkbackers would like to admit. -
Sean Bean whould be in all the rest of the Star Wars movies. Oh yeah, Matrix, as well as David Fincher, suck ass. Thank you.
-
I'm sorry, are you saying that we SHOULD have a prejudice against the English for what was done hundreds of years ago (yes i know that it only really stopped 50 years ago)? That is just plain stupid and sick on your part. I did not say that I was for or against the UK - I'm neither. I do not approve of what has happened in their history any more than you. But is that any reason to not like them now? I have English friends who are not scavenging, robbing thieves or wear top hats and have tea. But it is also not the case where I am not taunted for being an American. There are plenty of English who call me "Yank". I respond with "Wank". I am not ashamed of being an American until such shameful things as the school shootings and incompetant populous are tagged onto the word. I love New York, and thats where I will live for the rest of my life after this stint in Europe. And I've never even been to England (there are other parts of Europe you know) nor do I have any intention of going. I hear it is a disgusting place and it rains 13 months out of the year.
-
Hey shiteater, I never said Americans did it first, but we do it the most. And I'm not prejudiced against anyone except morons like you!As far as my bet goes family members and pets don't count. So the next time you want to make a feeble response make sure you respond to something I actually say! bitch
-
Oh, very good come back ...
-
I think Gabriel Byrne is a fine actor. Has anyone seen The Usual Suspects? There's a fine film.
-
Thank you for clearing that up ... it sounded like what I wrote. Its just that I've had a chance now to look at things from a distance and I'm not pleased what I see happening in my country. Things that upset me very much. Things that make me ashamed to be an American - things that should make any American ashamed to be one. The aforementioned school shootings, the single-parent/divorce/both-parents-who-work situation ... its just sad. I just think that we have our priorities wrong when I mentioned the lust for money. That's all. I love the United States and I would never criticize it for negative purposes, if thats what it seemed before. TRIVIA - UK has state welfare and health because it is a socialist government ......... what was the original topic of this talkback anyway? .......
-
Maybe you're right. Fuck this capitalism and free market bullshit. FREE HEALTH CARE FOR EVERYBODY!!!! It works great in Canada, that's why a majority of Canadians with cancer come south to get treatment because the quality of care sucks, because its controlled by the government. Every been to renew your driver's license? Ever notice how courteous and efficient the people that work there are? Me neither. I don't want my doctor's office to be run like the fucking IRS or the DMV. Since we're giving away free health care, why don't we start giving people cars too. I mean, shouldn't every American have a car also? How about computers? Shouldn't everybody have them? Let's just have the government give us everything. Awesome, right! BRING ON SOCIALISM!!!! YEEEEE-HAAAAAAAAW!!!! Anyways, about SW2. I don't think that Gabe is gonna make it into the film; hell yeah it would be cool, but with all of these big stars in the flick, the budget might start to go skywards. I think Charleton Heston, Anthony Hopkins, or fuck, even Sean Connery would make kick ass members of the Jedi Council. Connery in a lightsaber battle. He's already worked with Lucas on Last Crusade, so maybe it could work.
-
A visionary artist of unparalleled understanding of emotion and humanity. A filmmaker highly regarded in the profession. For 3 movies. Not cash cows, mind you. There is absolutely no way Malick made The Thin Red Line for monetary purposes. Money was never an issue for this film. The actors? Paid basically on scale. And it was not a movie for the masses, either, like Badlands before it. If that's what people wanted, they saw Saving Private Ryan. TTRL was an exercise in the art of making a movie. Star Wars is (nothing wrong at all with this) eye candy, family fun, and overtly laden with messages about good and evil. TTRL showed you the war, and the viewer makes the choices of what messages you felt were conveyed. This is precisely the reason certain movies are not made for everyone, and these films are not concerned with the bottom line. Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut is another example of presenting the picture and leaving the message to be decided by the viewer. A lot of people don't quite like that anymore. They need to be told how to think. These are the people that bash high art. They don't comprehend the complexity of what it means to deliberate and take more than just your eyes and ears to the theater.
-
YES!! Now we can have an ANTI-CANADIAN and ANTI-SOCIALIST event. Where did Gabe Byrne go?
-
Bad enough you have to flame each other over Star Wars, which is at least on topic, if not civil or rational, but now we have to fight the Revolutionary War all over again? Rhetoric fails me, not to say energy, to describe my contempt for the foregoing. I love Star Wars. Looking forward to Episode 2. I think it's cool that Gabriel Byrne might be involved. Neato. Go George Lucas. Has anyone got anything else RELEVANT to post??!?
-
Do you want to see Malick direct EpII or EpIII? I agree with your description of him. I actually think that he and Lucas have a lot in common. They frequently tell the Hollywood establishment to go fuck themselves, and they both like to do things their own way. Hell, Malick didn't even show up when he was nominated for Best Director at the AA. Imagine during a lightsaber battle, Obi or Anakin start voiceing over lines of poetry like in the Thin Red Line.
-
Guys, we've lost the new War of Independence right here in TalkBack ... lets talk about social letdowns again ... what is this talk about Malick? Why is his good name being brought about into a Star Wars talkback? Then again, why has Gabriel Byrne's name been maligned with that science fiction trilogy+one?
-
Star Wars lover. Cool, so am I. I didn't attack you personally, just your ideas. I'm just glad that Star Wars can be enjoyed by both free market capitalists like me and left-wing commie socialists like you. No hard feeings. It kinda brings us all together (sigh). The world would be boring if we all thought the same way.
-
If any of you morons don't know who Irvin Kershner is, please stop here. He's the greatest movie director of all time, the director of Empire Strikes Back, S*P*Y*S*, Never Say Never Again, Flim-Flan Man, and Robocop 2. HE said it best when he said that the reason Episode 1 had no nostalgia was because of it's lack of unknown stars. Too many big stars ruined the movie's feel, unlike the other films did. This movie is shaping up to be a Bruckheimer film with all the different stars they are throwing in here.
-
If The Empire Strikes back were the only movie on my director's resume, I could die a happy man. Never Say Never Again also kick ass. CONNERY IN SW EPII AND EPIII!!!!!!!! I'm starting the campaign now!!!

Communism and Socialism are completely different things, you idi
by mephisto666
Communism argues that an extremely evolved and developed culture would eventually become so efficient that it would no longer need government or restriction, causing the state to wither as it becme ineffective. Each person in this imagined utopia would take what they needed, and give all they reasonably could. Socialism accepts that people are not intrinsically good and will not sacrifice self-interest, so there is a need for government. It is often though of as the stage prior to communism. Socialism also attempts to, if not even out the economic inequalities of society, then at least to provide a better minumum standard for all people. While Britain is a mixed economy, you would have a hard time now arguing that New Labour is anywhere near as socialist as previous governments. Many British think Privatisation sucks, and in the case of British Rail have been proved correct. Now, on to the subject of colonialism. While no-one would argue that it is right, I would argue that the British Empire was the best of them all (that's right America, there were other nations doing doing exactly the same thing; why not go ride them for a change, hmm?) I believe the Portugese Empire didn't crumble until the 1970s. In all cases we have tried to make up to our former colonies through the Commonwealth and aid programs. Another thing; are you seriously telling me that if America was in the same position as Britain and others at the time it wouldn't have gone in for colonialism? That is the biggest piece of BULLSHIT I have ever heard. Hell, you were into slavery long after everyone else. Don't get all high and mighty just because you were a late developer. Anyway back to Star Wars...
-
Anyways, I take it that you're from down under, so what do you think about all of the great things Star Wars will do for the Aussie economy. You guys are getting a fuckload of film business down there. MI:2, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, the new Crocodile Dundee movie, whoops, sorry didn't mean to mention that last one. I think Aussie chicks are fine as hell. If only you guys didn't outlaw guns I might move down there.
-
isnt that from twin peaks? damn, i need to go watch that show again....
-
I'm pretty amazed by all the vitriolic and really hateful bashing of George Lucas. No, TPM was not the best movie ever made, but let's not forget that he has made some good ones. A lot of you have been worshipping him for the past twenty-odd years due to Star Wars and Indy. Now because of one bad film he is suddenly Satan. Get over it! Maybe I'm just naive, but the next movie could be better. If you want to hate someone for being an overpaid talentless hack direct it at Chris Columbus or Paul Verhoeven.

For Those of Us Who Still Can't Tell Gabriel Byrne and Liam Nees
by buzz maverik
...Byrne would be a welcome addition. He'd make a great Jedi.
-
The Limey (or "The Limmey" as the Blockbuster employee insisted on calling it) was one of the worst films I've seen. I watched it on DVD when I visited a friend of mine in th US last month and I was looking forward to the promised gritty performance from Terence, instead I got a comically stereotype cockney geezer who insisted on spouting rhyming slang every couple of minutes and then explaining then afterwards. It was almost as if the screenwriter had an "How-To-Speak-Cockney" guide and was simply copying the explainations out of it. I was ashamed to watch the performance infront of the non-Brits present.
PS i'm sure that SW EPII: Whatever will turn out fine :-)
-
I'm always amazed at the pro-American zeal of these talkbackers. It really makes me wonder what's going on in the American school system. Watch Three Kings--the best flick of 1999--maybe that'll help. Anyway, I'm also amazed how everyone always says The Empire Strikes Back was their favorite one by far. And yet it has made the least B.O. Obviously you didn't feel that way at the time. What changed? Why is it cool to say it now when you were all complaining Han got frozen back in the day?
-
you're absolutely correct. It seems to be universally agreed upon (at least in the world of geekdom) that Empire was the best movie. Yet ESB made less money then Jedi. So obviously, the movie going public does not agree. i have the feeling that all the tie-ins, Jar-Jar, Annakin as a kid, etc... was put in place by Lucas to make as much money as possible to finance the next two films. If the next two films are as dark as Lucas has hinted, they're not going to make near as much money as EP I.
-

Perhaps the answer has something to do with being kids.

Yeah that and Armageddon are really up ther with Brazil and Days Of Heaven. I mean...that's pretty funny. And for the record, SW and Empire = fun, thoughtful excitment. TPM = poop.

"cool world"
-
Boy o boy o boy, do I have my work cut out for me. It seems I have to educate some of you talk backers. First off, to Coffee, Rossimus, and SDG, I totally agree with your views on The Phantom Menace. I loved the film, I loved the original trilogy. I liked the Ewoks, and thought Jar Jar was ok. The first movie was close to a religous experience for me when I saw it for the first time as a 9 year old. And there's NO WAY a movie sells as many videos as TPM did unless a lot of people liked it. That's a fact. Now to the poeple that need educating. KingMenthol, you're not the first talk backer I've seen that has criticized Saving Private Ryan. To you and those others, I say...WHAT THE FUCK WHERE YOU SMOKING???? SPR is one of the best films I've ever seen, a film which brought tears to my eyes. There were reports of WW2 veterans having flashbacks while watching the film. Don't you think these men would be a better judge of how good the film is than you or anybody else? Didn't hear any of that stuff about The Thin Red Line, a film which bored me. Terence Malick didn't impress me at all. Are you guys really that jealous of Lucas and Spielberg that you're all reduced to this bitching? I think Kubrick is a fine director, but mostly his movies don't do anything for me(except for A Clockwork Orange). Doesn't mean I think he sucks, I just don't enjoy his movies that much. Can't you say the same about Lucas and Spielberg?
Verbal 2000, no one ever said America was perfect. But by God, I love my country warts and all. So stay your ass in Europe for all we care. Your Euro friends may consider us fat and greedy, but damn they're sure quick to call us whenever any serious shit goes down. Think NATO would be worth a shit without American forces? We're the United States of America, dammit. As for your views on TPM, they're your views. Period. Accept the fact that a lot of people loved this movie. Respond back if you wish. One more thing, I don't understand all the Matrix bashing either. That was a damn cool movie, it fucking rocked. Why is it so hard for you people to like BOTH The Matrix and TPM? You don't have to hate one to love the other, you know. Try it sometime. Flame away. -
Nothing. Absolutely correct. Anyway, Three Kings ruled completely. As did The Matrix, American Beauty, The Green Mile and a host of others. I never said the USA was perfect. No country is and I don't think that there is any one country that has a better society and government and whatever else that would make it better than America. From here though, you get to look at things from a distance. I was criticizing things in a positive way (albeit in a hostile manner). Anyway, I'm sick of preaching about politics and social conditions, so that's enough of that. It just amazes me that the same people that enjoy so many smart popcorn films like Indiana Jones (like I said, Lucas has good ideas but cannot realize them - Spielberg directed) that you could possibly *love* Star Wars. Saving Private Ryan IS one of the Greatest Films of All Time. I would never insult the bearded deity that is Steven Spielberg. I just don't think that Lucas is deserving of the merit he gets when his name is put alongside Spielberg's or that he gets it at all. Which is better guys? Spielberg or Lucas? You know what I think.
-
Personally I've no doubt that Lucas has talent, but I just don't think its the sort of talent that can maintain an entire movie. Lucas is great at sequences: The pod race, the gungan city, the final battles, Coruscant, etc. However, TPM demonstrated that he was entirely unable to peice them together. I don't know about anyone else, but I got the feeling that TPM could have been substantially rearranged, eg, Coruscant, then Pod race, then Maul, etc, and it wouldn't have mattered 'cause the plot was too weak. Also, as I have said on several occasions, Lucas cannot get decent performances any more. He just isn't an actor's director. We've all seen the documentaries and read the interviews where actors say that Lucas didn't really talk to them or give them any hints. I'm not saying that he is Satan after one bad film. The point is that he is not a particularly skilled 'director', he is a great ideas man. He might be the dude behind Indy and Star Wars, but he didn't direct most of those films, and I think we all probably ought to be glad about that. I dont necessarily think that Ep 2 is gonna be shit, but I do think that Lucas seriously needs to think about how he is approaching the movie.
Also, re the communism/socialism/capitalism stuff, Mephisto666 - you are on the money. For any of you who don't believe that American and Pacific rim capitalism is the most insidious and damaging form of colonialism ever to exist, I suggest you get down the bookshop and start reading Chomski, Jameson, and Mike Davies. Truth hurts. -
the first time i saw tpm i was disapointed, the second time i liked it a little more.when i saw it on video i loved it(i used close captions and understood ever word jar jar said) as for using another director for the next i think is pure hogwash.lucas is a great director but he has too much control hopefully someone will talk some sense into him
-
Your UserID email address appears to be invalid. Would you care to write to me privately using a valid address, so I can send you my comments on TPM?
-
Hey, Joey, you hit the nail right on the head with US Forces and NATO. If the US pulled out then the Brits will have no one to embarras in the War Games.
-
Exactly! It is possible to watch a movie and not love it, but not feel the need to rip it apart.I personally thought Matrix and SPR were decent, but not great.I just feel that Dark City came out first, and dealt with a lot of the same stuff, so Matrix didn't have the effect on me as it did some of my friends who hadn't seen DC.Plus Thiteenth Floor kicked both thier asses!hahahaha
Sorry, that was a bad joke! As far as SPR it was OK, but I think the best war movie bar none is Full Metal Jacket, directed by By of course Stanely Kubrick. And right on about America! I hate to spout cliches, but love it or leave it, no, it's not perfect, but to critcise someone for having national pride is moronic. It's dickstains like our friend V2000 who are willing to sell or country out and turn thier backs on it that create most of the problems we face!OK, now for a RELEVENT COMMENT!(I know, you can't believe it)I am sure Mr.Byrne is a fine actor, but how many old white guys do we need? How about some brothers!I mean we have Sam, the originals had Billy D, but thats it,what is there only one black dude allowed in the universe at a time?(and it doen't count if they're in a full body costume)Besides it seems like it may be too many cooks! -
verbalsoze94@hotmail.com, if you please ...
-
I won't deny SPR was a decent movie. But if you'll re-read my post about Malick, you'll see why you were bored at The Thin Red Line. I feel that the Hollywood stories (especially these hero ones like SPR) are so contrived and are wearing thin. TTRL is on par with Apocalypse Now. You're not exactly sure what the point of all of it is. And that's precisely the point. When you leave the theater, you are prompted to go back and reflect upon what you've seen. Why does a deserter come back and fight his ass off? Why in a fight for the freedom of the world does a colonel think about career and the shortcomings of his buffoon of a commanding officer? These are the kinds of questions that make a film more than just Friday night fare. What kind of questions are raised by Saving Private Ryan that cannot be answered immediately? That Nazis were the enemy? That young men were scared yet valiant at times? That people died? That it's virtuous to fight for the good of one? Everything in SPR was right there for you. It was not engaging at all, and it ostensibly was after your heartstrings in an overt attempt to MAKE you cry. In TTRL, you ask the "why" of things. In SPR, there's nothing like this to question.
-
Wow man. You made a lot of excellent points. I agree with you 100%. I only wish that other people that were in your unfortunate situation would take the initiative that you have. People need to realize that the only person you can count on to help you in life is yourself. If you are constantly looking to the government for help, you will forever be enslaved to that government. The government would rather give a homeless person a fish a day, instead of teaching them to fish which would feed them for a lifetime. I especially agree with you about unions giving donations comprised of union dues to political candidates. If you are a conservative Republican, you would not want your dues going to Al Gore's campaign, and vice versa if you are a liberal Democrat. You shouldn't be asking the presidential candidates what they will do FOR you, you should be asking what they will do to get government out of your life.
-
So the large number of times I mentioned BRITAIN in my post about socialism, with particular reference to New Labour in BRITAIN, and the opinions of the BRITISH, all conspire to suggest to you that I'm Australian, do they? *** B.Scrotum, perhaps a name closer to the truth would be Dick. I'd suggest Dickhead but you're the last person I'd ever give head to.
-
That movie is the only movie I have EVER walked out on.
TPM I think Rulz. No question.
-
Hey, I do think that The Thin Red Line was better than Saving Private Ryan...but those movies (and Apocalypse Now) are nowhere near the greatness of Full Metal Jacket...Let's face it, Malick is Malick, Spielberg is Spielberg, Coppola is Coppola, but KUBRICK rules above them all.
-
I'm just bumming about, but no site seems to have picked up the news from heat magazine that Ewan has had his hair bleched for Wars 2.(It's in the article about Madonna)Blonde Ben?What the fuck! You don't go grey in 10 years do ya!"what the fuck's goin' on?"A Fucking Kajagoogoo Jedi!Huh?
-
Have some fucking faith, people. Everyone stumbles once in while. Sprinters have off races; boxers get floored and come back; Einstein balked at Quantum Mechanics... people slip. That's what TPM was, though it did not "disgrace" the SW series in any real way. With the exception of the podrace Announcers, everything in TPM was in keeping with the Star Wars universe. One problem was that Episode One (at leastwhere Lucas chose to start it) was probably the least interesting part of the overall saga. Not that much happens. It is much more a vehicle to set up things to come, which is unfortunate, but survivable. I think several things could have improved the film: 1) Making Anakin's "slavery" harsher. (But Lucas couldn't do that because then how could the Jedi leave his mother behind?...Lucas got himself into a box with that one.) 2)Anakin should have been there for the fight at the end, with Darth Maul. The tension and conflict would have been huge, with Maul perhaps "seeing" that this kid would grow up to be his "successor" and try to kill him. Also, Anakin should have done more with his Force, like kill some guys on purpose, or do something else impressive (I know one draft of the script had him using the Force to help take the Queen's ship out of hyperspace at just the right moment to blow through the blockade.)...................... Anyway, the point of this rant is that TPM was but a tiny slip. I still have great faith that Lord Lucas can kick ass in these next two movies, and I for one will be standing in line again. Trust your instincts--believe in Lucas!
-
Coffee, how can you make such intelligent comments in this talkback, and then slag off Arnie in the other? Ecaz, don't you realise that Americans pay the least tax of any developed country? Did you know 10% of the people own 90% of the wealth? So much for your classless society where everyone can go get a decent job. That's the key word here; decent. I could probably be a poor immigrant and go to America and get a low wage job, but would it be a life I wanted? In Britain at least very low wage jobs are supplemented so people can live with a little dignity. Your government also always argues that it is impossible to implement taxes suggested at world summits eg on pollution, when these taxes are already in force and working well in Europe. Also most people don't want to be a burden on society. Yeah, some do; in Britain we do have a problem with benefit fraud, because people percieve it as taking money from a faceless beauracracy; but we don't with the National Health, because they know it's stealing from the sick. People realise it's not something to be taken advantage of. You seem to be basing all your critisism of left wing or socialist policies on the former Soviet Union, which was not communism, or China, which is also not a communist country. This is more a Stalinist regime. Even so the Chinese have a very good level of health care, particularly in the cities. Can the Cold War have affected you so deeply that you can't even take mildly left-wing policies? Say it ain't so!

Yeah, I thought it could've been better but I'm 20 years older now so I chalked it up to the lack of the youthful "wow" factor I got when I saw the originals.
My opinions? Here we go: (1) Jar-Jar was annoying but not worthy of death, though if I do see him much more in Episode 2 and he isn't less annoying by then I will have no qualms about ramming a steel rod up his Gungun ass and slow turn his roasting carcass over an open flame. "Deesa sun isa moida on meesa skin". You'd better pray you taste good. (2)Acting was mediocre, kinda like ROTJ. (3)As a student of computer animation, I can honestly say that while Lucas' CGI execution was the most incredible thing I've ever seen, it was just too damn much. To quote someone I know (who is also in computer animation) "Lucas was just showing off how big his computer was". I agree. That whole Gungan sub scene was totally irrelevant, in my opinion. Sure, it looked cool but it served absolutely no purpose to futhering the story (plus it was kinda hokey). It reminded me too much of an IMAX ride at Disneyland. (4)Byrne...sure, why not. (5) My biggest gripe: I saw the words "Star Wars" at the beginning of this movie, yet that blink-of-an-eye space battle scene at the end was *weak*. In Ep2, I'd better see some real *SPACE BATTLES*, dammit! I'm talkin' at least half the freakin' movie...60 minutes or more! It is called *STAR* Wars for God's sake. Hell, 'Babylon 5' did better than that crap. Finally, I'll leave you with a little something I heard while eavesdropping on some dudes sitting in front of me when I went and saw 'The Matrix'. These guys were talking about 'Independence Day' (the movie) and one guy said something that I believe is the Standard Operation Procedure in Hollywood when it somes to making movies (and one I do agree with). So all you Brits (God love you all) who moan about 'Saving Private Ryan' (a movie that moved me in more personal ways than you'll ever know) and to a lesser extent 'U-571' and 'Braveheart' here is the quote:
"Sure, Hollywood could make a movie where the Brits save the world...but who the Hell's gonna believe that?"
Get over it, UK. Hollywood is in America. If you want "substace" movies that are more 'your' kinda thing and glorify Europe over all others, go talk to the French (who gave SPR a 10 minute standing ovation when Spielberg showed it to them before it hit the theatres) or the BBC. Hey we'd be glad to make one of 'your' movies...just fork out the cash. -
First off, I liked TPM a lot. Who cares what critics say, they aren't paying my fare to see the damn movie.
Secondly, Wtf did you bring my wonderful contry into your dumbass string for anyhow? People going to the US because our healthcare system sucks? At least we don't turn people away at the emergency rooms because of lack of money. If anything, from what I hear, people from the US come to Canada because the drug industry in your wonderful U, S, of A gouges the hell out of prescription prices so much that sick people have no other choice but to go north. Now then this isn't trying to back the States as a whole, I love em :) But if you want to pick on some countries heathcare, try picking on one that isn't the #1 country in the world to live in. I mispelled country, dammit. Now I sound illiterate hehe :)
