Hey Yo! Draven here.
We are starting off the week with some big Marvel news. Deadline is reporting that Benicio Del Toro has joined the cast of James Gunn’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. The specific role itself is being kept a secret for now, but it is described as a “lead role”, that is going to be a part of the Marvel Universe in future movies.
So let’s speculate a little here, we know Chris Pratt is playing Star-Lord, Dave Bautista is playing Drax the Destroyer, Zoe Saldana might be playing Gamora, and the last of the titular group are Groot and Rocket Raccoon and neither have been announced yet. We had been hearing some rumors that a major cast member was getting ready to be announced, and I expected it to be Rocket Raccoon but with Marvel keeping it a secret, it has me wondering who it could be. Could he be either Thanos, or The Controller?
Del Toro is such a versatile actor, that it makes guessing his role difficult. I would put my money on Thanos though, especially considering that they are keeping his role a secret and are emphasizing that he is going to be a big part in the future of the Marvel Universe. Don't forget that Del Toro was really close to being Khan and I think he would create a pretty legendary villain for Marvel.
This is just more casting news that is getting me excited for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. Plus, in the last week I have heard that the script is more in line with the tone of GHOSTBUSTERS or GALAXY QUEST, than it is with the previous Marvel films (blasphemy). James Gunn seems perfect to direct this kind of material and I love that Marvel is taking a risk leading into AVENGERS 2. I have a feeling that this movie is going to surprise a lot of us, and I am more interested in it than either of the next THOR or CAPTAIN AMERICA films.
With Comic Con just around the corner, I have a feeling we are going to find out more about Del Toro’s role and this whole project in general in the very near future.
