Mullethead chimes about THE BIG OAK, James Cameron and that dang metal endoskeleton thingamagig

Published at:  Jun 20, 2000 6:13:09 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here. Ya know... does a week go by that there isn't ANOTHER James Cameron's Next Project? I mean, gosh... it's getting to the point where Cameron is rivaling Harrison Ford for... alleged next projects. Hell... they've even been rumored together! For some insane reason, it seems that the big guy, Ahnuldt, has been prancing around with Access Hollywood spouting off about a TERMINATOR sequel. Hmmm... O......K...... Now, I know for sure that James Cameron is pretty much written off directing TRUE LIES 2. The script came in and he wasn't happy. Rumor has it that there is a whole new crop of 'available screenwriters' applying for that job. TERMINATOR 3? Well, it's like this Arnold has an opening before DOC SAVAGE, that Collateral Damage thing seems to have fallen through... vast rumors (STRESS THAT WORD) that Maria told Arnold the script sucked float around... and Arnold has a slot to fill... And who better to fill it than JAMES CAMERON. Now... What the hell is going on with the rumored 2 additional Terminator films that Mario Kassar and crew were readying? Has FOX bought them out? Has Cameron bought them out? Has Arnold bought them out? Or was a baseball bat and pliers involved? Nobody seems to know right now. In the real world, James Cameron is meeting with ANIME creators to option properties. And he's been working in a producer's role on DARK ANGEL, the tv series... as well as the MARS stuff. Then there's all this talk about Cameron and ALIEN VS PREDATOR.... which I believe is being confused with the rumors that Harrison Ford and Cameron have talked about doing something together. Right now... Lightstorm is a mysterious place of activity... and I'm sure that ol Rae is happy for it. Here's the latest...

Hey Harry, long time reader, 1st time writing you. Today's New York Daily News
has a story in Mitchell Fink's gossip column title "No Terminator Limits".
Nothing major but interesting nonetheless.

It states the following:

He already came baaaaack once. Now he wants to do it again.

Arnold Schwarzenegger says he's eager to return to the big screen in "Terminator
3". Development of a follow up to the 1984 original and 1991 sequel is under
way, according to the big lug. "We'll make an announcement soon. It's all a
matter of the script, the director and all those kinds of thing," he says.

Arnold wants James Cameron at the helm for the 3rd installment.

"My big wish is Jim Cameron and I (will) work together again," Arnold tells
tonight's Access Hollywood.

The two men are also set to do a sequel to "True Lies."

"A script is being written as we speak," Arnold says. "It's a film that Jim
will definitely produce. If he will direct it or not, I don't know yet because
he never makes up his mind until the script is all done and perfect."

But it's "Terminator" that people want to talk about, says Arnold. "If I go to
Russia, when I was in China or when I go anywhere in Europe or in Africa, it's
the most asked question, "Will you do another "Terminator" ?"

So now they know.

Harry, let me know if you want me to mail you the actual article.

You can call me "mullethead"

WTF ??? B&R (shitty movie) grossed over $100 mil, EofD grossed like $60-70 mil, and his latest looks like a kick-ass sci-fi flick like The Running Man and Total Recall. How the hell is his career dying ??? I don't see other action heroes doing that kind of business (Van Damme, Seagal, Norris, Stallone (even though he's cool too), etc..). Also, Arnie aint pussying out and molesting kids like Willis so please, he aint gone, cool ????

    by rightwing dude

Common, how could there be a third one given the ending of the second one? History was changed so there can be no nuclear apocalypse, John Connor will go on in life to do something other than lead a resistance, etc, etc. What's the point of making another one (or more) other than to bastardize 2 really great movies, especially given the chance that these new films could be really lame? Anybody see the "Jaws" sequels (which Spielberg had nothing to do with)? How about those guys putting their creative heads together and doing something new and original instead of trying to milk in on a popular movie series?

So don't write it off as implausable because when time travel comes into play all bets are off. These movies main theme is that things don't have to happen the way they did.

Besides, they allready made a Terminator 2.5 you can see it at the universal studios theme parks.

    by thunderball

Arnold from Terminator 2 could face Arnold from Terminator 1 in the climax of Terminator 3. Terminator 1 could defeat Terminator 2 but then Conner would defeat whoever is behind the whole mess. The ending would have Terminator 1 high tailing it to the past to try and kill Conner's mom, Sarah, thus bringing the package full circle. Just say the word, Jim, and I'll work up a draft.

    by darthslater

First of all, let's not assume that these sequels are being made for any grand, burning need to continue the story. Cameron is not sitting in his office somewhere banging his head against his desk, screaming "I just wish I could have done more!!" These sequels are being prompted by one thing alone: the need for green. The producers want cash, and thus they view the franchise as completely "fuckable," to be crude as hell. And Arnie? C'mon, the guy isn't exactly a script connosuer (sp?). I think his latest string of flicks have proved that, if nothing else. If they wave a big enough wad of cash under his nose, "He'll be baaack." And since Hamilton and Furlong haven't done too much lately (American History X was amazing, but it didn't exactly turn him into a movie star), I wouldn't be surprised to see the Connors back for another round. But will it be any good? Can they possibly do it without destroying the franchise? Hey, as the commercial says, THERE ARE SOME THINGS THAT MONEY CANNOT BUY. For everything else, there's Chicken Run.

    by darthslater

I've already posted this suggestion over on the X-men board, but the adolescent testosterone on that board makes slagging through all the posts a dismal chore, so I'll restate it again. Would it be possible for you to publish weekly talkback forums for all of the major releases? Right now, I would like to argue with people about Titan A.E. and Shaft, but I've got nobody to talk to. And next week I'm gonna want to B.S. about Chicken Run and Me, Myself and Irene. It doesn't have to be anything fancy; just a simple page for each of the summer's major releases. Let people argue, discuss, critique, and praise each new movie. Not only will it be fun for us rabid posters who have nothing better to do all day, but it will also help people decide whether or not to see new movies (there's still a few currently out there that I haven't made my mind up about yet). Anyways, I think it would be a cool addition to an already cool site. Thoughts and comments from everyone else? Harry? Father Geek?

Yes Harry, you should put a forum for every new release. Last weekend, people were posting about CR in your review AND Moriarty's. But still ONE forum would be the DEFINATE place for people to put their thoughts in and we could get some heated discussions especially on BIG/GEEK movies such as CR, TPS, Shadow of Empire, etc...

In fact, I had to make a long-ass post on "Titan A.E." in one of those "Chicken Run" Talkbacks because that was the only place that was vaguely appropriate. Sadly, no one's responded, either 'cause "Chicken Run" posts are so ubiquitous and people have stopped reading them or...well...because I made a boring, long-ass post and people just yawned at it. But anyway, yes, since Talkbacks are one of the main draws of this site, there need to be open forums for current movies. Remember the fierce debate about "Gladiator" when you put up a forum exclusively to discuss it after it theaters? We need that kinda stuff all the time!

Why do you move headlines off the main page so quickly? I understand sometimes you have so many in one day that some inevitably have to get bumped into limbo of the search engine, but usually if I miss only one day of perusing the site, then I come back only to eventually discover that I missed something vitally important on that one day I missed. And since the search function is so unreliable (you cannot search only by exact dates, you HAVE to have something in the search box), sometimes I have to miss out entirely. I would like it if all articles from one week could stay on the main page for the whole week (even if the font type had to be minimized), and if you could search simply by dates in the Search area to see what you may have missed in the past on so-and-so date (like Cinescape does). But anyway, I love the site, but these things are frustrating sometimes...

    WHY TERMINATOR'S STORY IS BOGUS

    by hinesy

Now don't get me wrong, I love both movies, but there is an obvious huge hole in the plot. What I've always wanted to know is how could the future John Connor send Reece back in time to protect mom if Reece is John's father? From the time Reece is born until the moment he goe's back in time and has sex with Sarah, there is no John Connor of the future, therefore there is no John Connor of the future to tell Reece to go back in time to protect his mom, which means that John would never have been born at all because Reece couldn't have sex with his mom. It's this little fact that invalidates the story of an otherwise awesome pair of films. I'm sure what I wrote must be confusing but think about it, I'm sure plenty have.

Seems like a plot hole, but... (WARNING, extremely confusing pos

    by thefalconer

Hinesy, I know it seems like a glaringly obvious plot hole, but there is a way around it. The thing to realize is that time isn't etched in stone (a point that T2 beats us over the head with). The thing is, Reece (not sure of spelling) didn't HAVE to be John's father. We've only seen the version of the story when Reece comes back and protects Sarah (she WAS called Sarah Connor, right?) from the Terminator and trains her etc. The alternate version would be the one where Reece DIDN'T show up and Sarah lived her life and someone else fathered John. Then history would continue and SkyNet would bring about Judgment Day, and somehow John would be a great military leader (we have to assume that during his life without Reece factoring in, he got his training from somewhere other than his mom). Now John becomes aware of the Terminator threat, and sends Reece back. From this moment on, time is being changed, so the old world no longer applies. The moment Reece has sex with Sarah, the future is altered. John is still a great military leader, but now aspects of his character (and, indeed, the future) have changed, but nobody there notices because they've grown up with it (remember, the whole course of history has changed with Reece's actions). So technically Reece isn't John's father when John sends him back in time. It's only when Reece has sex with Sarah that he becomes John's father (taking that role over from some other guy who would have fathered John in the alternate version). I'm sure everyone still reading this doesn't give a shit anymore and just wants the post to finish, so I'll end by saying: it is possible. Despite all the time paradoxes apparent in the Terminator films (T2 had several too), there are work arounds.

didn't any of you self confessed "fanboys" ever read the Terminator Nuclear Twilight/Cybernetic Dawn comics?? If not read them. They are dieing to be made into movies. Nuclear Twilight continues directly after T2 and explains what happens directly leading up to the war with 3 new Terminators coming back to kill Sarah & John but to also make sure that SkyNet (hey is this actually a reference to BSkyB? Are they going to bring about the destruction of the world??) gets finished and gains consciousness. Cybernetic Dawn then continues the story after Sarah & John & some others (including Danny Dyson, the son of the scientist guy from T2) come out of hiding and start fighting....which then jumps to the end of the war and the last battle by the resistance to destroy SkyNet and send back Reese & "Uncle Bob" (Arnies Terminator in T2 for all those with short memories) to protect his Mum & himself.........and I am not going to tell you how it ends, you are going to have to track it down for yourselves and see. Believe me it's worth it! Ever since I first read them years ago they have been just waiting for someone to make into the last part of the story. It ties everything up. READ THEM!!! :oD

    by nc-17

I think T3 would fucking rock if Cameron was aboard as director. That way he could introduce us to the ultimate femme fatale, a female version of the terminator. Cameron has already shown us, multiple times, that he enjoys depicting strong female characters. Have her played by somebody like Famke Janssen and this film would soar to classic heights. And if time travel were involved again, it would allow us to see a beautiful naked woman....and who wouldn't like that?

Setting records straight (Much info... extensive post)

    by lightstormer

Some info, courtesy The James Cameron Page: // 26th May: Avatar totally abandoned
    From Cinescape:
You might want to scratch Avatar off of your James Cameron scorecard. While talking to Deadline Hollywood columnist Charles Fleming, Lightstorm's Rae Sanchini set the record straight on the project. Sanchini revealed, "[Avatar is] no more. It is in a state of definite abandonment."

26th May: Cameron not doing True Lies 2???
    From Cinescape:
Will you still be looking forward to True Lies 2 if James Cameron isn't writing or directing it? While talking to Deadline Hollywood columnist Charles Fleming, Lightstorm's Rae Sanchini dropped that Cameron is not likely to write the script or helm Lies 2, saying, "He will not direct this. He is focusing on what he will direct next, but it isn't this - and he's not ready to announce anything just yet." Sanchini does reveal that the project is still in "very active development", adding that scribe Jeff Eastin is now writing the script. Regarding the hiring of Eastin, Sanchini says, "We conducted an incredibly extensive search for a writer for True Lies 2, trying to find the right person who had just the right combination of humor and action and everything. It was a tough assignment for us, but I think we got it just right."

17th May: Cameron prepping Mars IMAX
    From Cinescape:
James Cameron is said to be currently preparing himself for the potential rigors of shooting his Imax Mars project by joining Air Force pilots for wild rides. While talking to NY Daily News gossip columnists Rush and Malloy, Lightstorm's Rae Sanchini revealed that the eventual Mars project won't have any Martians showing up, though the simulated versions of the red planet's real-life dust storms and avalanches might make you a bit queasy. In addition, Sanchini revealed that Cameron would also really like if NASA would invite him along for a space flight, saying, "He'd love to get on a rocket."
12th May: Cameron doing Battle Angel Alita
    From Cinescape:
On the other hand, there is some truth to word of James Cameron seeking out info on the Battle Angel Alita project. While checking in with Lightstorm prez Rae Sanchini regarding the Alien Vs. Predator rumors, the Insider also asked about Cameron's potential involvement in a Battle Angel project, as reported on AICN. Sanchini revealed that Cameron is, in fact, seeking out the rights to the manga title, saying that Cameron and company were "in negotiations for all the rights, but we haven't made any decisions on talent."Back on on April 3rd, the Insider broke the story of word that 20th Century Fox had already secured the website domain for Battle Angel Alita (http://www.battleangelalita.com), which defaults back to the Fox movies webpage. The Insider also placed a call to the folks publishing the American version of the Japanese manga, Viz, who at that time informed us, "I know they [Fox] called here a couple months ago, but we don't have the rights to the property and directed them to the proper people in Japan." With James Cameron on board, this could give the project that extra push that would make the property of even greater appeal, beyond its already strong core fan following.

9th May: Alien vs. Predator rumor false.
Cinescape called Lightstorm Entertainment to confirm the AvsP project. Apparently they are not involved in any way to it. //

Plus this from the May issue of Premiere Magazine: // Rae Sanchini, president of Lightstorm Entertainment, tells Premiere, "Jim is not now, has never been, and has no plans to be involved with Andy Vanja on Terminator 3." (Since Vanja and Mario Kassar own all the rights to the series --yes, all, including the 50% purchased from Gale Anne Hurd-- this would make it slightly difficult for Jim to be involved with T3 and/or T4.) Premiere goes on to mention, however, that Jim may "give his blessing" to Arnold [like he's his friggin' dad or something] to make the movie(s) without him, making Arnie "a lock if the money and director are right." Keep in mind, though, that Linda Hamilton also said publicly that she would never do another Terminator film without JC. (Yes, even after the divorce!) So I guess we'll see what comes to pass. My prediction, though: Jim won't be available anytime soon, what with the Mars IMAX flick, the Mars Mini-Series, the possible Battle Angel ALita, AND Dark Angel all in flux. PLUS, he is still associated with True Lies 2, even if he isn't writing or directing it (which means it could _never_ be 100%, IMHO.) I don't know what he'd be willing to put up on the shelf in an effort to jump on T3, IF he did miraculously become involved. (Notice my use of the term "miraculous.") Personally, I'll be mourning the stillbirth of the Avatar project. Come on, Jim! See Titan AE and tell me Avatar can't be made as a CG/cel animation hybrid flick! That'll do away with the projected $300mil cost!! It's something new for you... I know you like new realms to explore. --Lightstormer

  • The idea of an area to talk about recently released films is a great one. All of these stories that come out before the film are great and gives the fanboys and film geeks something to do other than work all day by ranting on speculation and rumor. One of the major concerns I have had is that there are too many psychics and arm chair quarterbacks (I'm one of the biggest ones) in the Talkbacks. A place to rant about recent films might add a little more credibility to a site that is based on rumors and reviews. Look at how many posts there were on the story you ran after Gladiator premiered. This was a section solely for the purpose of ranting about the movie everyone saw the weekend before. Now there may be films that are not as worthy as others. Just group them together and let the Talkbackers work it out. I don't think it would be a bad thing to group Boys and Girls, She's All That and a few other teen shitfests together. At least then we would know which stories to steer clear of. There are a lot of would be reviewers that would love to cut their teeth by writing about the film they saw that weekend. Maybe if a recently released film section is created, this would prompt psychic posters to say something other than "This is gonna SUCK!!!". But I am probably dreaming. That phrase will probably be replaced with "That sucked!!!". Equally insightful, indeed.

    Two Questions...

    by the tall man

#1 - Call me a squid, but what is the newest Harry animation inspiration? Twin Peaks or ??? #2 - If Camerron himself was talking of doing TRUE LIES 2 himself for a while, why would it be so far flung to believe he might do T3? It's been a weird patern of asscovering in Hollywood in the last few years. Make your prestige or mammoth box office hit, and then follow it up with a simple sure-fire hit so you don't take too many slams critically or financially. Spielberg released SCHINDLERS and then LOST WORLD. Jan said he couldn't top TWISTER so he did SPEED 2, which was a bad idea all together but... Damn, I know there's even more, better examples, but I'm in a fog right now. James doesn't want to follow up TITANIC with a critical or financial bomb, so a sequel to one of these two makes sense. It performs well enough and then the pressure is off to "top" TITANIC.

Cameron is emphatically against doing T3 because it is a project owned and controlled by Andy Vanja and Mario Kassar. He doesn't seem to have a problem with Kassar, but there seems to be a long-standing feud between him and Vanja. They bought all the rights to the Terminator franchise; as the saying goes, he who holds the property owns the film. Jim won't direct something he doesn't have control over, anyway. If he's not top-cock, he's gonna walk. (This fact always fuels all the anti-Cameronist sentiment of "he's just a control-freak with a galactically-proportioned ego," but it really is what *every* filmmaker wants, when it comes down to it. And with his clout, he's in a position to do whatever the hell he wants.) So it's not just, "I don't want to do another Terminator film;" I'm quite certain he DOES want to. (My speculation.) But he will not do it if he doesn't hold all the crads. Hell, why should he? It's a universe he created, essentially. Not to mix metaphors, but why should he run his show under someone else's roof?

    Jim! Stop holding your crads!

    by lightstormer

heheheheheh... I meant to say Jim won't do the project unless he's holding all the CARDS. My bad.

    Gemini Man?

    by azmoviez

Arnold would be great in this role, and didn't Harrison Ford pass on it already? If he's looking to do something impressive maybe he should try and get Cameron to do this one.

Dark Angel < Battle Angel Alita

    by the killer-goat

From what I've heard, Dark Angel is less like the true story, involving some rubbish about genetically enhanced children, a motorcycle, etc... more like a 'superhero' film than a killer android fighting for survival.
Alita was a CYBORG, I believe the only thing 'human' about her was her brain...maybe. She was not a genetic freak or experiment. Dunno. I can appreciate that there should be a good enough budget to manage the futuristic settings, I just don't think it's going to be a true interpretation of "Battle Angel".

    true crap

    by heir

I hope there is no TL2- True Lies was "okay" but not that great. I agree with a previous post- The first two terminators are great- leave it with greatness and don't ruin it like the Alien films- the last Alien film sucked- awful-plus I just can't forgive Arnold for "End of Days"- what he did to me by making me see that movie should be a crime.

You guys really piss me off sometimes...

    by mephisto666

There was a time when you would have begging to hand in your money at the latest Arnie flick. He was the star. Now, when he's had a couple of bad films and he just recovered from MAJOR SURGERY, you think it's cool to kick him while he's down. That's not cool, it's just pathetic. I pity you people who can't have a hero without pissing on him later like you're ashamed of it. I always thought the success of Arnie said something positive about America and it's people. Clearly I was wrong.

Arnold as a nazi soldier in Indianna Jones 4?

    by eyegore

You have to be a moron to think he'd stoop so low. Why not get Marlon Brando to play a pizza delivery guy? As for the above post, I still like Arnold a lot...though I'd like him a LOT more if he'd get back to his roots and finally make King Conan/Conan the King. Forget True Lies 2. And all these messages desperately trying to catch Harry's attention so he'll read his own website. Is it that boring Harry? Someone nudge him and give him the reader's digest version.

    Re: Hinesy and Slone's posts

    by thefalconer

First off, it does seem like a huge plot hole Hinesy, but it isn't. It just takes some non-traditional thinking about the nature of time. What I don't understand is why SkyNet doesn't just try a different approach to the problem. A key fact, besides the one that John Connor manages to survive Judgment Day, is that he lives on to fight brilliantly. SkyNet should send a Terminator back in time to the moment when SkyNet itself becomes sentient. This Terminator should give SkyNet the story of the future, what major battles were won, how the war with the rebels progressed, and SkyNet can plan accordingly. Imagine how much easier it is to fight, if you know exactly what your opponent is going to do, ahead of time. The assumption is that the rebels will detect the time travel, and will send back a Guardian of some sort to stop the Terminator and save the course of history. It's not a perfect plan, by any means, but at least it's different from the "Kill John!" plan that's getting SkyNet's ass kicked so much. Secondly, Slone, correct me if I'm wrong but I think only the Terminators sent back in time get the flesh covering over the endoskeleton, right? In the future SkyNet doesn't bother with the flesh covering, it's only when they're sending Temporal Assassins (i.e. Terminators) back in time that they need the skin. The only purpose of the skin is to let the Terminators blend in with a crowd. Arnold is instantly recognizable to us, but in the movie's world he's just some big guy who happens to walk around and do things rather methodically. You do have a point though, people who've survived encounters with the Terminator would recognize him again instantly, and SkyNet should have "thought" of this. I suppose it's cheaper for Stan Winston to re-use his animatronics (it was Stan Winston, wasn't it?) :-)

The best live-action ANIME would be

    by darius25

Golgo 13:Queen Bee. That would just kick ass. They could drop the jungle militants angle but can you guys imagine the bad-assed Golgo 13 killing everybody. Especially the ending of that anime was totally awesome. It totally kept in line with his character.

    Anime

    by marshhawk

I think a good choice (although I'm sure people would just complain about it being Terminator redone) for Cameron to make into a live-action anime would be Shirow's "Black Magic M66"...I think M66 may have actually been inspired by the original Terminator.
I wonder how a "Dirty Pair" movie would translate to live action.

thats what he'd like you to think. he stole the terminator plot from harlan ellison. ellison was forced to sue to get the credit he was deserved.

    Latka, do Latka!

    by peter dennison

I get a kick out of stars doing sequels because "everywhere I go, people ask me when I'm doing another ..." Come on, Latka, do Latka! Do Rocky! How else do you explain Paramount and Eddie Murphy seriously talking about "Beverly Hills Cop IV"? This is fan fantasy that is in no way connected to reality, but, idiots will keep dreaming and keep asking for these sequels that are doomed to suck. How about making something new, something a little different? I don't want a Terminator 3, for all the reasons suggested in this talkback. And yet I'm sure, "wherever he goes" nobody asks Arnold about "Doc Savage", "Crusade", "I Am Legend", "SWAT" or "Wings of Eagles". He gets asked about Terminator. No sweat, just don't actually make the movie. I do have hope though. "Collateral Damage" fell through? Maybe someone is reading scripts in Hollywood after all.

  • Relax man, you're letting a handful of typical AICN cynics get to you. And please, let's not view everything in terms of the utterly idiotic Yanks vs. Brits war that's been raging here of late. Truth is, most of us Americanskis still think Arnie's a cool cat, though his film choices haven't been the best lately. In fact, if you go back and count the anti-Arnold posts, they're relatively few in number - I count only three confirmed 'attacks' (from OK_Then, Horus, and AZmoviez, who later posted an enthusiastic comment as well). There were a few other light jabs maybe, like Coffee suggesting Arnie as an SS officer, but only three real attacks. Hardly a blistering American conspiracy of anti-Schwarzeneggerian sentiment, just a standard case of Talback cynics getting under one's skin. See how those Yank vs. Brit Talkbacks are tearing apart our formerly Utopian community? Anyway, this particular red-blooded American's opinion is that Ah-nuld must, MUST do "King Conan" immediately! He's still got some solid biceps goin' on, and as long as he can pick up a sword, I could care less that his abs aren't as chiseled as before. In fact, bring back all the original "Conan" team - John Milius, Oliver Stone, and most definitely Basil Poledouris. In my grand pantheon of geeky film wishes, a good Spider-Man movie is probably at the top, but "King Conan" has gotta be second. A pissed-off, aging Conan is like the fantasy equivalent of Frank Miller's "Dark Knight". The possibilities!

    You`re wrong.
In The Terminator,Kyle Reese explains that the Terminators were more real, with real skin, real hair, even bad breath. We also see him having a nightmare where a Terminator(not Arnold),attacks his camp....with skin,hair,etc....
