Richard Linklater Dishes On BOYHOOD And His "Spiritual Sequel" To DAZED & CONFUSED!

Beaks here...

As the release of Richard Linklater's brilliant BEFORE MIDNIGHT nears, the indie filmmaking icon is out giving interviews and discussing some of his upcoming projects. The two that are receiving most of the attention (via Collider) are BOYHOOD and THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT, and if Linklater has his way, we could see both in theaters before the end of 2014.

BOYHOOD is his ambitious chronicle of a divorced couple - played by Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette - attempting to raise their child over the course of twelve years. What makes this project particularly interesting is that Linklater has filmed it in bits and pieces since 2002 - i.e. the same time frame covered in the movie. Though the story unfolds over an extensive period of time, Linklater told Collider that the movie will not be an epic affair in terms of the run time. “It’s one feature film," he said. "It’ll be a little longer, like over two hours, but it’s not five hours or eight hours. It’s feature-length.”

The other film Linklater's working on is THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT, which The Film Stage refers to as a "spiritual sequel" to DAZED & CONFUSED. According to Linklater, it's a comedy set during the first weekend of college, and will feature a big ensemble. The film will not, however, feature any of the characters from DAZED & CONFUSED; it's the evocation of a particular place and time that will hopefully place it in the same league as Linklater's 1993 masterpiece.

Both of these sound cool to me. I'm just glad Linklater is keeping busy. He continues to be one of our most interesting and unpredictable directors.
