Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Brit Marling seems to like cults. She and Zal Batmanglij are making a career out of exploring cults and flipping expectations about them on their heads. Sound of my Voice was pretty spectacular (I still want to see a sequel) and The East could have very easily been super preachy about the evils that corporations do or taken the other road and been judgmental about the hypocrital eco-reactionaries, but in the end it takes a nice shot right down the middle, twisting perceptions a couple of times before the end.
It was one of my favorites from SXSW this year and now they're gearing up for their big theatrical push with a new trailer that shows off the great cast and sets up the premise.
