The Official AICN Goonie Girl chimes in with her look of Cameron Crowe's UNTITLED (aka STILLWATER)

Published at:  Jun 08, 2000 1:32:31 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... Quint's main fan, Goonie Girl wrote in with this screening of the new Cameron Crowe film. This is the first report from a beautiful lady about this film... and given that Crowe has a lot of fans in the female side of things... well, it's nice to here that the babe loved the film. Here ya go with the latest on Crowe's flick...

Hiya Harry! Like I mentioned last night, I was at a screening of the new
Cameron Crowe film. It's currently untitled, but it's listed on the imdb
as 'Stillwater' so that's what I'm gonna go with. (typing 'Untitled
Cameron Crowe movie' repeatedly isn't much fun) Cameron Crowe was at the
screening and I got to talk to him for a few minutes after the movie. He
seemed genuinely pleased with the audience reaction. Usually my movie
reviews consist of "Oh my GAWD - you SO have to see this movie, it's SO
good" or "Oh my GAWD, you SO shouldn't waste your time watching this".
Bear with me on this detailed review thing :)

~Goonie Girl~

Newcomer Patrick Fugit plays William Miller, a 15 year old rock and roll
fan who gets the opportunity to write an article about Stillwater, an up
and coming band, for Rolling Stone magazine. His mother, Elaine,
(Frances McDormand) is just a tad on the overprotective side, but agrees
to let him go on tour with the band. While at his first Stillwater show
William meets Penny Lane (Kate Hudson) and the rest of the 'Band Aids' -
make no mistake about it, the Band Aids (Fairuza Balk, Anna Paquin and
Bijou Phillips) are not groupies. No way, baby - they are there "for the
music"...they "inspire the music"

After proving to Stillwater that he is a true fan, rather than 'the
enemy', he starts to earn their friendship, but not quite their
confidence. Guitarist Russell Hammond (Billy Crudup) opens up to William
quite a bit, but everything he says and does is basically off the
record. Lead singer Jeff Bebe (Jason Lee...in an absolutely brilliant
role) is quite unhappy with Russell (as is the rest of the band) but
when they're on stage that all disappears.

Without giving anything away, I can say that Stillwater is the kind of
movie where each of the characters learns something about themselves.
It's not predictable or sappy in any way. I really wish that the other 2
Stillwater band members would have been featured a little more
prominently ( but if I had it my way, the movie would have been about 3
hours long.) Zooey Dechanel is wonderful as William's older sister,
Anita and I loved Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Lester Bang. (founder of
Creem magazine). It's a very original movie and I absolutely loved it.
In other words...Oh my GAWD, you SO have to see this movie..it's SO
good!!

You're right, I'm wrong. The Bang thing was a typo and I realized I was wrong about the 'founder' thing.

    Apologies :)

    Stop the American Pie Virus!

    by cds

Go to universalpictures.com, select e-mail, fill in the form, and tell them exactly how you feel about the annoying, obnoxious, pop-up viruses. Don't forget to mention that you have canceled your planned purchase of the video. If Harry won't turn off the virus, maybe Universal will.

    I don't have a problem with...

    by kingmenthol

The I'm First (I consider it tradition) or the American Pie thing (if it keeps Harry from accepting these Grinchy positive review-only junkets). Except perhaps you can get an advert for a more current title? On the subject of this Untitled Crowe project, looks like everybody's loving this one. Gotta tell ya, I dig everything Jason Lee's in (a hugely underappreciated comic talent-his work in Mumford, while understated, was really funny), and Billy Crudup is a talent who'll end up doing a shitload of good movies. He's up there with Sean Penn. And Bijou Phillips is a hot little tramp, so that's another plus. When's it opening? Anybody here from NRG wanna get me some press screening tix?

    One little note...

    by endo

I've read quite a bit of press regarding this movie but haven't heard anything about the fact that the story of "Stillwater" is remarkably similar to the story of one Cameron Crowe himself. I remember hearing about Crowe writing for RS when he was basically still a kid. Did a long interview with Led Zeppelin in the mid-70s if memory serves. Looking forward to seeing this flick.

    Untitled is a Zeppelin thing...

    by br26354

I've also seen this film and it is wonderful. Fresh and original. Can't wait to see it again. I believe the title is supposed to be "Untitled", which could be a Led-Zeppelin nod, being that Zeppelin's 4th album had no title and this IS Cameron Crowe's 4th movie. Hummmmmm......now all we need is some symbols!

i too am a huge fan of jason lee

    by seashore

back from the days he used to skate even...his appearances in big brother, etc...anyway, i would definitely go see this movie. and i dont think goonie needs to apologize to pompous asses. only problem i have is when writers give there characters cutsie, double-meaning names, like fugit (which means escape in latin) or penny lane. not liking that.

    That's the actor's real name.

    Patrick Fugit.

His character's name is William Miller.

    Miller, in latin, means Miller.

"American Cuisine". Nobody ever seems to mention it but it's out there in video-land (I think). Rent it if you can find it. Lee is fantastic in it as a--Get this--MASTER CHEF!

    Cameron Crowe is GOD!

    by movieguyjy

I am so excited to see Crowes next movie,he is my favorite writer/director. It is great to hear an early positive review. It will be fun to watch a biographical rendition of Crowes life. Thanks for the info.

What's wrong with the title "Stillwater"?

    by count vicous

Its easy on the ears, not particularly remarkable, but its a lot better then "The Uncool". Whats the best movie title ever? Well that question is absolute bullshit because how you react to the movie, the reviews it gets etc.. all shape your opinion about the title. Fir example if you know a nasty prick named Steve, then you that name wouldn't particularly cojure good things when you hear it. If this Stillwater is anywhere near as good Crowe's Say Anything, the title will conjure up great memories, no matter how bland it seems now. For the record, I think U571 is the single worst movie title of the last couple of years, maybe I'll change my mind when I see the film.

    goonie girls Almost famous review

    by jillkoz

I couldn't agree with you more about featuring more about the other 2 Stillwater bandmembers. My brother Mark played Larry Fellows, the bass player. There is a 4 hour directors cut coming out on DVD soon- look for it.
