Hey! Pssst! Ya want some GRASS'

Published at:  Jun 07, 2000 3:32:07 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with a reminder of a great film that is currently playing on only two screens in the country at the moment... but will be expanding to select theaters throughout the summer... AND IT IS ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL that ya check the film out. Way back during SXSW I wrote this review for Ron Mann's GRASS, and I must repeat that you must see this film. Right now, it's only playing the Film Forum in New York and the Castro in San Francisco... but this isn't just some 'Hippie Pro Pot Flick', it uses 100%... just the words of the government and the critics of pot. The mixed message, the changing message and shows in an incredibly entertaining manner... the hypocrisy and the lies about Mary Jane and her Reefer Man. Below is the art from the one-sheet, minus the quote from me at the top of the actual one-sheet that reads "FANTASTIC! SEE THIS MOVIE!" Harry Knowles, Aint It Cool News. I absolutely 100% endorse that you crawl, drive, fly to see this movie as soon as it hits your local area. THE TRUTH MUST BE EXPOSED!

Endorse it? Hell, Woody narrated it!

    by marcus vindictus

Good call. Great flick. Saw it at SXSW and was mightily impressed. I am in no way a pothead (never even tried the stuff. Yes, it's true.), but I am a fan of industrial and propaganda footage. Fantastic source material and a terrific score. Killer stuff.

the Canadian gov't must be smoking the stuff...the movie has been banned up here because a scene showing monkeys smoking as part of a U.S. gov't experiment has been deemed cruel(?) to animals....

    Grass is legal in Canada

    by wigglepuppy

Well, not really. I saw "Grass" here in Toronto, last Film Fest. As a marijuana user and advocate (I have MS, and I will be participating in one of Canada's first medical marijuana studies - woo hoo!) I was so excited about this film. Marijuana should be legalised. I can't believe that drinking and tobacco are socially acceptable and pot isn't. Hopefully, Grass will enlighten the pigheaded. But it won't, 'cause they won't go see this movie anyway. BTW, this is a doc, no narrative, so don't expect Reefer Madness 2000. Light one up, and go see it.

'Grass' is showing in Toronto too....

    by jike spingleton

That's right, it's playing later this month for several shows at the Bloor Cinema. Check out www.bloorcinema.com for dates. A fine establishment, they love movies (I don't work for them, etc. etc.). Heading there right now to check out Roth's "War Zone" in fact. They seem to have a thing for pot-themed movies too, showing Reefer Madness and other similar things pretty regularly, and widely advertising theme nights. I guess potheads are a good demo to target (??). Anyway, Peace. - Jike (who apparently is a 'jerkwad loser,' since one of my recent talk-back posts, consisting *only* of the URLs of two sites critical of AICN, was very quickly removed.)

    Toronto!

    by jrpacman

I was about to write about it playing in Toronto, but the guy above got there first. Anyway - the Bloor Cinema rocks! They just played the "Mental Hygiene Festival" featuring all the educational films from the 50s such as "Social Courtesy" and "Boys Beware!" (you never know when there might be a homosexual around!). It's great stuff.

    Ron Mann

    by fiji mermaid

Didn't Ron Mann also do "Comic Book Confidential" and "Poetry in Motion"? And also "Twist"? He's Canadian, right? If I'm straight on this then "Grass" will be required viewing for everyone.

    by gg

I wholeheartedly embrace Harrys endorsement of this movie, it is really good, funny and enlightening at the same time!
And it is narrated, by Woody Harrelson, no less! Go see! Go See! It is funnier than Reefer Madness, which I watched after having inhaled, this one I saw being clearminded...well, as clearminded as I get, anyways.
    Anyway, even if you

Actually, the ban in Canada has been lifted, because it's archival footage. And the deemed cruelty wasn't making the monkeys smoke pot, but on the restraints used.
    It's a strange world, Sandy.

    Theater Error!

    by neuracnu

Heaven forbid, but I believe I see an error on their website, and thusly on AICN about a particular location in which GRASS will be playing. There is no Tivoli theatre in Kansas City, MO. There is one, however, in St. Louis, MO (which is on the other side of the state). http://www.tivolitheatre.com/

    Losers

    by bootz

The only people who are going to see this flick are the same cowardly losers that smoke dope, as a means of escaping their miserable lives. These are the same people who lack the intellect, bravery, and maturity to confront their problems, AND who serve no real purpose in the betterment of our society because they take no responsibility for their environment, or other human beings. In other words, these Stoners are the wasteoids of humanity, who might as well drop off the edge of a cliff and get THE FUCKIN' HELL OUT OF EVERYBODY ELSE'S WAY. Our highways are crowded enough. You know how to spot these leeches of existence? Just look for some type of fuck up, and guess what sort of fuck up was behind it. Yup, some Loser Stoner. "Huh, huh, huh-huh. Shit, man. That train wreck was kewl." "Heh, heh, heh-heh. Yeah! Look at all those dead bodies. Their blood has made some really kewl splotches all over the place!"

Harry and the feds set up the talk back on this particular article as a way of tracking pot users. It was part of Harry's plea aggrement after being arrested for public fatness. So hide your stash before the boys in blue show up at your...Is that the doorbell?

Actually Woody Harrelson does narrate it.

    by elkabong

To the guy at the top who said Woody would probably endorse the movie, I just looked at the website & it says that he narrates it. Maybe he could do a commentary track on a Cheech & Chong dvd.
