Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here. HERCULES THE STRONG has been laying low recently, but that doesn't mean he hasn't been paying attention to the world of Coax. He managed to scratch out this missive to me earlier tonight. In the next few weeks, AICN is going to start reviewing the pilots for all the shows that the networks picked up for this fall. HERC's going to be one of the guys heading up that effort for us, so look for those reports soon. Until then, he's got some quickies to tide you over.
THE OPPOSITE OF NBC
Top five reasons to tune into tonight’s first episode
of NBC’s “no-confidence” sitcom “M.Y.O.B.” at 9:30
p.m.:
1) It was created by Don Roos, writer-director of “The
Opposite of Sex,” which may or may not be the most
entertaining comedy released in 1998.
2) It stars sitcom goddess Lauren Graham. Remember
her as Andrea, the bipolar management consultant who
promoted Lisa over Dave on “NewsRadio?” Or as the
“Townie” who was neither Jenna Elfman or Molly
Ringwald? In any case, she plays a high school
assistant principal who discovers she has a grown
niece (or perhaps a daughter?) she never knew about.
3) The Ricciesque smart-mouthed “niece” is played by
fast-rising blonde Katharine Towne, daughter of
world’s greatest screenwriter Robert Towne and actress
Julie Payne (the hot female scientist in Albert
Brooks’ feature directorial debut “Real Life”). Since
launching her feature career in 1998, Towne has
already completed work on “Without Limits,” “She’s All
That,” “Go,” “The Bachelor,” and the upcoming “What
Lies Beneath,” “In Crowd,” “But I’m A Cheerleader” and
“Town and Country.” So this may be her last TV series
for a while.
4) "M.Y.O.B." was not filmed before a live audience.
5) The second episode of “Survivor” isn’t on till
tomorrow.
CASTING GROUCH
Another good reason to stay home tonight is MTV’s new
hourlong “Real World/Road Rules” casting special,
airing at 10 p.m. These series launchers tend to be
even more entertaining that the shows they set up.
(Listen for a lot of “Whew, glad he didn’t get cast”
and “Dang, how come she didn’t get cast?” around the
water cooler Wednesday.) The New Orleans-set “Real
World 9” kicks off June 13. “Roal Rules 9” hits the
highway June 19.
THE FUTURE, CONAN?
See how NBC’s “Late Night” runs without Andy tonight,
as Conan and Co. mount their first Richterless episode
since the sidekick’s much-lamented departure.
Here’s what else is on the late-night radar:
