A Reader's Fight Club DVD Review

Published at:  Jun 03, 2000 9:17:02 PM CDT

Good day, folks, El Cosmico here, with a kind reader's review of the Fight Club DVD.

You know, it simply can't be emphasized how important a good 5.1 sound system is to a home theatre, especially given the diminished screen size versus a real film theatre. Surround is key to life. Here now, our friend's review:

Whats up fellow AICN readers. I preordered a copy of the Fight Club DVD a
couple months ago on ebay and was told it would not be shipped until June
6th. When I arrived home there was a little package on the floor in front of
the mail shoot. I now know what it feels like to have a heart attack. I guess
the gods from above felt that I should have a little good luck in my life
time.

If you thought you have seen Fight Club, think again. It has never looked
or sounded this beautiful before. The 5.1 Dolby is one of the best I have
heard. This is the DVD that will force you to buy a sound system. That final
gunshot through the cheek shook my entire house. And I will not even comment
on the plane sequence because that has to be heard to be believed.

After you have watched the film once through, I would suggest that you
admediatly go back and watch it with the audio commentary on. Unlike a lot of
commentary tracks where they talk basically about nothing, David Fincher
actually gives you info on what it took to transfer scenes from script to
screen. And I don't know what it is about Norton's voice, but it feels almost
hypnotic. And I guess you can say that Pitt is the comic relief of the three.

Was this worth the wait? Hell yes! My favorite film of the past couple of
years and maybe of the decade has been given the proper treatment. This is
everything The Matrix DVD was hyped up to be and wasn't. It puts The Abyss
special edition to shame. And it basically slaughters all the James Bond
special editions put together. On the morning of June 6th when you wake up,
know that you have something special coming to you that day. Skip school or
work and find the best sound system and biggest TV you can find and get ready
to be blown away.

Keep up

Akira

Many thanks to you, kind sir. A fine reader you are. Peace and chicken grease.

Let's Not Talk About Fight Club...

    by zubalove

I got caught up in the hype for this movie at this site so I think it's appropriate that I bring this point up here. I loved Fight Club. That fact should never be in dipute. Was it flawed? Well, yeah every movie except Citizen Cane is flawed. The point that I think should be made is that Fight Club is the first bone fide cult classic we've seen in almost a decade. I'm talking on the same level as Blade Runner. Both the two films not only offered a film noir plot that addressed how characters reacted with reality but also did it in a stunningly fresh visual style. "Tyler Durdin was around long before I met him" This movie is just plain awesome, even if not taken as entertainment, but as a case study or an urban legend. Kids will be renting this and tearing through dime bags and half cases like folks my age did for Pink Floyd and ErasorHead and Hudson Hawk.
Well maybe not Hudson Hawk, but they should because thats Bruce Willis and Hollywood at it best. And I'm saying that seriously.....
Anyway, before I make any more enemies....
    Zubalove OUT!

    Hudson Hawk

    by bob x

Finally someone acknowledges the brilliance of Hudson Hawk. I've been preaching for years...

Anyway, I'll be getting my Fight Club DVD today, so I'm a very happy man. If it really kicks the Abyss DVD's ass it has to be THE most awesome dvd out there (even though Criterion's Brazil is pretty nifty as well).

    DVD

    by foolish mortal

I posted a little while earlier spouting the virtue of this DVD. Everyone knows the 2 disc setup, the options for 5.1 audio and THX. There's commentary with Norton, Pitt, Fincher, and Helen; commentary with just Fincher; and commentary with two other blokes. You get deleted scenes (one with Chloe which was funny), on location snippets, a music video, and a really cool option to see two deleted renditions of the intro brain scene with optional music and credit font.
What really was nifty was the promotional section on the second disc which had a press kit displaying Fight Club attire like a damn A&F catalog. Truly hiliarious. If you catch the green smiley face on the page, there's an actual ordering section for you Fight Club junkies who actually want a T-shirt or clock.
Along with production art, an interview with Norton (at Yale, text format only), and the typical bells and whistles of any DVD (production notes, cast bios, etc.)
And to verify I ain't bullshitting with you, after you take off the brown wrapper displaying the Fight Club font, the actual DVD case says "Tyler Durden says... use soap."
Further proof: Disc 1 has Norotn's pic on it. Disc 2 has Pitt's mug on it. But Pitt's name is on top of where Disc one goes where Norton's is over Disc 2.
f.f.proof-- underneath the Disc 2 encasement it says "In Tyler we trust."
Even if you aren't a fan of the movie, one must admit there was alot of work put into this DVD, there's even a trailer in the promotional part of Disc 2 that was finished just for the DVD!
Pick up the DVD and watch it for the message and the absurdity, not the violence.
b.t.b. -- that's Pitt on the righthand side of the hotel scene (where the waiter's say "welcome" on the television set)

    Hasta

Hidden things to look for on the Fight Club DVD movie

    by yerallagainstme

I never noticed this when I saw the theatrical release, but it certainly caught my eye on the crystal clear video transfer of this DVD. Yes, I too got this DVD early! Here are some scenes in the movie where you should look for images of Tyler Durden scattered throughout the movie. There may be more, but my eyes aren't that good! I posted this in the DVD Talk forum as well at www.dvdtalk.com
Runtime 4.06 - when Ed Norton says "Everything's a copy of a copy". You see Tyler standing in front of the copier.

Runtime 6.18 - Ed's doctor says "That's pain". And you see Tyler standing next to the doctor.

Runtime 7.33 - Testicular cancer group leader says, "And really open ourselves up." You see Tyler standing next to the leader with his arm around the guy.

Runtime 12.35 - Ed's character says "Next Group, after guided meditation". You see Tyler off in the distance, but in front of Marla.

The QUESTION, Raymond, is 'What did you want to BE?!

    by mephisto666

I hated Citizen Kane (sorry people, but I preferred The Third Man). However Fight Club was excellent. American Beauty was good, but I liked Fight Club more. This DVD sounds excellent, I love it when they put a bit of effort into them.

  • I can't believe they didn't put the trailer on the DVD for the Matrix. That all I wanted in the damn extras, and that's the one thing they specifically left out those fucking Warchoski shit heads! I realize many people like Bullet time and the FX info, but I wanted the fucking Trailer, and I don't want to have to buy Quick Time 4.5, or DVD-ROMs to get what should have a no brainer to include on the basic DVD package. They took No BRAIN to a new level with this DVD. Fucking idgits!

...when you pop in Disc One(the movie), after the second FBI Warning page there's a third one with a "warning" from Tyler Durden. Alas, since the pause feature doesn't seem to work here, I couldn't read all of it. A DVD made with great care, mein froinds! And just a reminder: you are not your fuckin' khakis.

    by vondoom

    Yeah, these movies have nothing
to do with each other...BUT they
were both way ahead of their time.
    People will really get into
Fight Club in the coming years,
    when most current movies will
    have been forgotten.

    by weasel47

Forget what everyone else says, I _did_ buy a DVD player a few weeks ago just to be ready for this. I've seen the movie 11 times already, and by next weekend I'll probably be at 47. The best part of the story is that I went to it on opening day in the theaters, but I was expecting it to be a piece of shit. It only took 30 seconds for me to realize I was wrong.

i do not yet own a DVD player, but im still buying the damn DVD, because Fight Club (imho) is the best movie of the decade, possibly the best since Star Wars.

btw, i heard one of the extra scenes is the infamous "i wanna have your abortion" line, is this true?

    Reply to Talkback

  • Forgive me everybody, that's a Superman quote. Actually Mr. Teschmacher, I'll tell you what you did: You made some pretty funny posts. Good show. Zubalove: Amen brother. Fight Club will go down as a classic. And Mephisto: I'm still trying to reposition my jaw from when it fell to the floor after reading the Citizen Kane comment. Oh well. Fight Club dvd was so friggin awesome

    by lilvenom

i got myself an advanced copy of this baby, and it was the first time watchin it for me, and let me tell you... WHERE HAS THIS MOVIE BEEN ALL MY LIFE? it was the most amazing experience ive had in my home... except for when my mom walked in and started watchin it with me and tellin me how gross the fights were
there is so much extra stuff on there too, i can spend a week goin through all of it. and the commentary is sooooo great, except for helena bonnam carter... she seems to babble a bit.

    Yes, it's true.

    by yerallagainstme

Yes, that abortion line is in the deleted scenes section. The caption for it says that the execs didn't like the line "I haven't been fucked like that since grade school.", but then when they saw what Fincher changed it to, they wanted the old one back. Or maybe it's the other way around? Either way, they both sound horrible (in a tongue-in-cheek way). You should really get a DVD player because you are missing out on possibly the best DVD to ever be released (I've been collecting for three years now). There is so much extra stuff in this package that it's not even funny. Don't you want to hear the 4 different running commentaries on the movie? What about the 20+ behind-the-scenes clips? Or the other 6 deleted scenes? Or perhaps the 17 TV/trailer/promo spots? Or the photo galleries? Or freeze-framing the hidden subliminal messages that you missed in the theater? You are totally missing out, man.

    by lull59

um.....ah, fight club. You don't know how it feels to insert your fist into the cheek of your own face using extreme velocity.... You are a god as you pull off the road after leaving a fight to watch your friend throw up the dinner that you dislocated for him with one swift punch to the gut.
Being slothful and not doing anything are very different.
    Be your OWN hero.
Your pain is a white ball of healing light. Everything become freakishly clear. Only after death, can one be ressurected. It's only after you've lost everything that you're free to do anything.
    Start your own chapter.
You know what I'm talking about....Sir.
How much do you know about yourself if you've never been in a fight? Go ahead, hit me.

    by narf

I got this dirt cheap (for Canada at least) at Future Shop for $26.99. I am so damn impressed, it ain't funny. Whenever a title comes out with this much love put into the packaging and extras, I miss laserdiscs less and less. A not to Criterion: You are being outclassed by most of the other DVD companies now, maybe it's time you dropped your prices a bit, eh? I cannot justify shelling out 59.95 Canadian (plus 15% tax!) for one of your discs when sets like Fight Club exist. That used to work in laserdisc days, but not anymore. Tee Hee! narf out!

Yeah, it's kind of a small gripe with Fight Club on DVD, but it comes with the ad for the Buy-4-Get-1-Free deal, but the set doesn't come with any proof-of-purchase tab to mail in. Without the tab, you can't count it towards your four. Damn. And I really wanted Towering Inferno.

    by oliver platt

Commenting on Criterion-yes they do put out some nice discs, but not half as nice as some of their LaserDiscs were (Se7en) and not half as nice as the discs Fox and New Line produce. If you're gonna skimp out on extras, guys, at least lower the considerable price tags some. Or keep them out longer! (HARD BOILED, THE KILLER, THIS IS SPINAL TAP). I mean for Pete's Sake, The Brazil DVD from Criterion is 60 clams and it doesnt have half the stuff the Abyss has. My 2 cents.

Thanks for the P.O.P. info. I love my Brazil DVD set, but at $90.00 Canadian (ouch!) it really could have all fit easily onto 2 discs. Hell, my Muhammad Ali Greatest Collection is over 4 hours long on one disc AND it comes with a CD-ROM. All that at $25.00. I admit that Criterion has some superior titles, but who really cares if they price them so only the wealthiest consumers can afford them? I'd love to get the new Spartacus set, but it ain't gonna happen, cause Criterion would rather gouge me. I'll have to stick to my Universal edition for now.
