Can I just put this out there - can we have another MASTER AND COMMANDER movie? (Yeah, yeah, I'll get to the point in a minute.) Peter Weir's film turned out to be one of the best of the Aughts, didn't it? And Paul Bettany's performance alongside Russell Crowe's was wonderful. I'd love to see those characters on the big screen again. Oddly enough, MASTER AND COMMANDER reminded me of all the best things that I love about STAR TREK.
Okay, side track over. Bettany has been tapped to join Johnny Depp in Wally Pfister's TRANSCENDENCE, his directorial debut, according to Hollywood Reporter. No word on who Bettany is playing, but the film is supposed to be a science fiction epic along the lines of 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY or Pfister's own shot INCEPTION. Plot is being kept close to the vest, but apparently it's about a computer that gains sentience and a sinister nature. Since Bettany's doing such a fine job as Jarvis in the IRON MAN/AVENGERS movies, I hope this is a bit different, but since we don't know much about the movie, we have no idea who Bettany is playing. Hopefully he'll come at the part with the same skill and chemistry he showed in MASTER AND COMMANDER, especially working with an actor like Depp. TRANSCENDENCE comes to theaters Summer 2014.
