Wally Pfister, long-time cinematographer for Christopher Nolan (MEMENTO, INSOMNIA, the DARK KNIGHT trilogy, INCEPTION - for which he also won an Oscar) - will direct Johnny Depp in TRANSCENDENCE. Nolan will Exec producer alongside Emma Thomas, his wife and also long-time creative cohort. TRANSCENDENCE, about which plot details are scarce at the moment, marks Pfister's directoral debut.
Depp will then transition into BLACK MASS for director Barry Levinson, a crime tale based on the book Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob by Boston Globe reporters Dick Lehr and Gerald O’Neill (per a press release on Depp's involvement). Levinson, who once brought us films like THE NATURAL, YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES, and GOOD MORNING VIETNAM has been producing a bit of television lately - OZ and COPPER are examples, although he recently directed THE BAY. A film I haven't seen yet, but I'm told it's agreeably creepy. Is it?
Both TRANSCENDENCE and BLACK MASS will be filming in the near future... April - Summer(ish).
