The Kidd here...
I couldn't care less about the boy band One Direction. I couldn't tell you any of their songs. I couldn't pick any of them out of a lineup. I really know nothing about them other than the fact that teenage girls scream whenever they take the stage, and they are selling out venues all over the world like crazy.
However, I am at least curious about their concert/documentary 1D IN 3D for a couple of reasons. First off, these "event" films the studios have been jumping on in order to capitalize on certain acts being hot at the moment haven't been bad MOVIES AT ALL. Say what you want about the acts themselves and their place in your musical tastes, but they've been pretty solid stories about the artists. The Katy Perry film... pretty good. The Justin Bieber film... pretty good. One Direction's film...? We shall see.
Secondly, with Morgan Spurlock at the helm, I'd like to see his approach to this subject matter, which hardly feels like something he'd normally be attached to. He's been pretty successful at piecing together compelling stories with his previous directorial efforts... it's just a matter of seeing how these two opposites manage to come together here.
I always find these tales of musicians on the road fascinating - I could easily sit in front of my TV all day watching a marathon of VH-1's BEHIND THE MUSIC - so while I may not be a One Direction fan, there's something that draws me to hearing about bands struggling to find their way in the industry, overcoming whatever obstacles and struggles in order to chase their dreams.
1D IN 3D hits theatres on August 30.
