Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. One of the films I'm most looking forward to at SXSW this year is Alex Winter's Napster doc DOWNLOADED. I was that perfect age when Napster hit and was floored by what it meant. As a teenager the idea of finding any song ever with one button click and it was FREE... well, keep in mind back then I was not only a stupid kid, but the consequences of online piracy hadn't hit yet.
I graduated out of that phase and am more than happy to pay Amazon or iTunes my .99 per track now, but a lot of people haven't. Napster's influence was monumental in both good and bad ways. It forced the always slow to adapt media industry to use the internet to its full advantage, but also bred a generation of entitled people that don't view online file sharing as having a negative impact on the industry, let alone recognize it as a form of "stealing."
There's so much rich territory to cover here and I can't wait to see what Mr. Winter has in store for us.
