Censored Footage From The ABC / Kevin Smith Animated CLERKS!!!

Published at:  May 24, 2000 1:54:51 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with a really really quite cool clip from I believe the 2nd Episode of CLERKS which is going to be CENSORED by a bunch of.... "oh we must not offend anyone's delicate sensibilities" ball-less wonders. HOWEVER, never fear. As is usually the case, AICN is here to bring you that which you could not see else where. Why? BECAUSE CENSORSHIP SUCKS!!! Unless of course it is being done by Father Geek in the TALK BACKS below!!!

Hey Harry!

Junior Mintz here to drop off this clip that I pilfered last night. Seems I was over at the Mouse House recently and came across this censored segment from an
upcoming CLERKS episode on the cutting room floor. I scooped it up before
it could be burned and beat feet for the main gate. Within seconds sirens
went off, shots were fired and Disney's hired goons the Beagle Boys were
called out in full force to stop the fleeing little ol me. Fortunately my da da daddio taught me to swing a mean flashlight and I cracked several canine craniums before
vaulting over the barbed wire to safety.

Enjoy.

Click here if you want to go to hell for watching a clip that is morally wrong in all the right ways!!!

Just a reminder, this clip is in REALPLAYER format, so you'll need one of them thingees. It's pretty damn funny, so go get one and check this clip out!!!!

    Was it censored?

    by abulafia24

I saw this clip the other day on the ABC website for the Clerks cartoon (www.clerksthecartoon.com). It gave the impression that it was cut but not necessarily censored. It seems odd to me that they would put it on the site unless a party that is not the Mouse House objected to it, which I could see.

    Damn Disney

    by the real mccoy

i still can't believe how much trouble abc has given smith with his clerks series. how can a company like disney, responsible for so much vulgur crap through their different companies suddenly develop a conscience and pull stuff like this from the show. c'mon folks, it's funny.

This should be on a network that has a pair.

    by brainbuster

I wonder how much else has been cut so that nobody is offended. And how come the people that cut this scene didn't cut that entire Claymation movie about the Passion that was on CBS a few weeks ago. Now that was offensive.

That was censored?! Give me a break.

    by thesultanoferato

I see Kim Delaney's ass every other day on ABC, but because somebody tries to inject some humor into an event that's dark or into a director who's taking himself too seriously of late, I lose out.

If ABC really doesn't want this show, they should say so and let Kevin Smith shop for a network or cable channel that wants a good comedy.

    The Sultan has spoken.

    Clerks Cartoon

    by itchy pet

This clip is from the second episode where Randal and Dante get locked in the freezer in the quick stop. The scene is actually when the get locked in the video store later in the episode. I have seen the first 6 episodes of the Clerks Cartoon, and I know that it is supposed to air in a week or so but I have my doubts. There is quite a bit of homosexual and race types of jokes. Either way, all the episodes were funny as hell and I hope that it makes it onto the screen. Don't miss it!!!!

    Reply to Talkback

  • That clip has been posted on the OFFICIAL Clerks-The Cartoon website all week as announced on the News Askew website as well as being e-mailed to everyone on that site's mailing list.

Not as exciting as some bullshit about swiping it from under Walt Disney's frozen nose i suppose, but it does have the added benefit of being true...

    Get a grip

    by moviet00l

Everytime a company decides the creators have gone a bit too far and axe something, someone always starts shouting about "censorship" and how it "sucks." If this clip had been truly censored, then no one would be seeing it. True censorship is when the government attepts to ban all viewing of the material, not when a company decides that a joke is just a little too insensitive for their tastes. If ABC refused to air an infomercial for NAMBLA (a disgusting organization that advocates the molestation of children), no one would be screaming about censorship sucking. It's their company and they have the right to air or not air whatever they want to. I know it sounds like I'm getting a little passionate over this, but I think the constant cry of "censorship sucks" is overused. Very little is truly censored in the USA and other free nations, which is pretty amazing and pretty wonderful. By the way, that clip was funny as hell.

    when i saw this episode....

    by kylekrane

i saw this episode a couple of months ago at TULANE in New Orleans when Kevin Smith was there and i remember when this part played. I was the only guy in the auditorium (about3,ooo there) laughing... so maybe some people find it offensive.... i don't....

    Or, just maybe...

    by charxander

Perhaps it was cut because it wasn't funny. Just because a screening full of people didn't laugh doesn't mean they were offended. I only wonder how in the world "The Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" channel is going to squeeze this show into its jam-packed schedule.

    by monkeylucifer

I just think it's unfunny. The delivery is all wrong, and they don't do anything original with the ancient joke formula "combine serious topic with frivolous topic." Just plain flat and limp....I don't condone the censorship, but I sure as hell done condone the un-funny either.

  • I'm a huge Clerks fan, but that scene was just, well, DUMB. It's my guess that ABC cut it just cause the few who would actually get that joke prolly thought it was just kinda stupid. I certainly didn't get it till I watched it again, and even then it was like "uhhhh, okay..." Peace out.

    Reply to Talkback

  • What's that saying about having to explain the joke?. . .Well, here' goes anyway: For many of us, absurdity is funny. The juxtiposition of one of the gravest images in history with one of the most ridiculous of pop culture, is, well, so stupid it's funny.

    by giant fish

It's just a bit distasteful. I have a neighbour who was at Auschwitz, and lost his entire family there. I doubt very much he'll laugh at it. This kind of humour is fine around your friends, but it does not belong in the public sphere. Nobody minds cracks about the French revolution, but the Holocaust's no laughing matter, at least not for a few more decades.

    by the_tooth

I see enough French jokes here to take other readers' concerns about being offensive with a grain of salt, so the "sensitivity" of the issue is no issue at all. I liked the Flintstone's List clip, couldn't care less about Clerks. Does it make you feel oogey? Too bad.

    ABC Hypocrisy Again

    by horrorbiz777

I liked the clip, was pretty funny. ABC has *ALWAYS* been the most hypocritical of the TV stations. Our ABC affiliate plays hour long 1-976 ads with women in bikini's all night long here, and then in the morning we get to see the bible tumpers talk about how sex is bad, SEX IS EVIL. Fact is, if you don't like what's on TV, you change the channel !!!! Of course parents keep complaining about how their CHILDREN will be affected by TV. Hey mom and dad, TV is not a babysitter, turn it off and have junior read a book or play a video game or learn a hobby. And seriously; if people were REALLY uptight about people's minds being warped they'd be protesting commercials. Cuz any GAP ad is a million times more harmfull to the youth of America than anything Kevin Smith has to say.

    by enigma

this is brilliant, this is what made clerks so funny.
if you odn't like this, did you like the original clerks?
if you look at clerks george lucas takes more of a tongue in cheek bashing than overall praise like some would believe.
But you havce to love rendall's summary of spielberg, its funny cos its true, even if its not PC to believe it.
anyoen know when the show will be airing in limeyville?

    ABC Assholes

    by david lopan

If this show was developed two years ago when ABC's rating were in the toilet, they would have promoted the shit out of it and premiered it in the fall. But with this "Who Wants to Meet an Airbrushed Regis" show, they feel they can't be beaten, so why bother with a rinky dinky 'cartoon.' I can't wait until Regis slips into a makeup-overdose induced coma and ABC wakes up in 4th place. At that point they would let Smith draw pictures with crayons on used napkins and promote the shit out of it as "avant-garde and unique." And the funny thing is, I really didn't even like Clerks nearly as much as Dogma, but I thought the clip was funny as hell and showed a truckload of potential for that series.

    Funny... but trouble

    by spider15

I, too, watched this clip already on the show's official website within the last week. As satire, the clip is brilliant... however, there will be people who will maintain that the subject matter is inappropriate as a target of fodder. I'm not saying I'm one of those people (necessarily), but if you've been following the saga of the show up until this point you already know it's had enough trouble without the lingering threat of lost sponsorship.

Are you kidding here? So Alan Alda's "Lester" was right, comedy=tragedy+time?
I thought that idea hilarious the first time, when Woody Allen was making fun of it for me...

FYI, I'm still PO'ed one of my great+ grandfathers was killed by the stinkin' red coats in the war for independence, so don't start getting comfortable with those Holocaust jokes too soon.

Why is lampooning Spielberg movies verboten?

    by the_tooth

That's what the clip is doing, isn't it? It's making fun of Schindler's List, not the holocaust. Why is it we think TV People have an inkling of taste anyway? The brilliance behind Jerry Springer and Cops comes to mind. People in the TV industry have no call to say what is and isn't distasteful when that dreck is on the air. Is a play on the word "Schindler" really worse than watching white trash beat itself senseless over the size of a lawn gnome or who blew whom or other equally important issues?

    by giant fish

Well, tkteeth, I was merely trying to illustrate why such jokes shouldn't appear on national tv, and was a bit baffled by your reaction. Still, when I reread my comment, I realized I came across as quite arrogant and Lesterish. Point taken.

    Reply to Talkback

  • It's been a while since I saw Crimes and Misdemeanors, but I don't think Lester was supposed to be entirely wrong, just a moron who *way* oversimplified something complicated in a way that Woody Allen resented (of course, he resented everything about Lester). Giant Fish made a good observation: there does seem to be a tacit statute of limitations on how long horrible incidents are forbidden to be joked about. The question is how long, and why, and the answer says something about our society. (Deep. . .)

  • SP makes fun of EVERYthing (that's about the only thing I find funny about the show.) I could easily be offended when they poke fun at things close to me, but I see that they also poke fun at everything and everyone else in the world, so it's not like their just ganging up on me. Is it just that Comedy Central doesn't worry about offending someone? They just let the ratings take care of things for them? If it's too offensive and no one's watching, the creators will have to either change their style on their own or have their show cut!
