Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. When I first saw this story over at THR's Heat Vision blog, I rolled my eyes. The Rock producing and starring in a teddy bear movie with the guys that make those Journey to a Mysterious Island movies? Oh, Hollywood you so silly. But then I read the story and saw it is based on a single image that you've probably seen. This one:
Alex Panagopoulos is the illustrator and I remember seeing that image for the first time and it making a real impression on me. Suddenly I see potential in an animated movie that looks like that, but I don't know if that's the direction New Line and the producers are going. Given that TED was so big they could go with a live action fantasy film.
Knowing how light and bright the Journey films are I doubt they'll go this route, but if Dwayne and his producer pals really want to make something that will be remembered and viewed as more than just fluff they'll build up a real mythology here and make it dark. I'm talking Dark Crystal. I'm talking about Secret of Nimh. This could be that kind of movie for a new generation.
Anyway, it'll probably be Jim Carrey dancing with penguins stupid bullshit, but Johnson's a smart guy and as long as there's a chance he could do something really interesting with this I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
