Tonight the KERN Krew and I discuss what we learned from “Django Unchained” and “Les Miserables.”
Also, Bryan Fuller just tweeted that NBC is not going forward with the “Munsters” reboot “Mockingbird Lane,” my choice for the best pilot of the year. So we may talk about that too.
“Ask Mr. KERN” airs Saturday night 10:05 p.m. till midnight PT.
No matter where you are you can listen to the show LIVE by hitting the “Listen Live” button at kernradio.com.
Best of all, you, constant reader, can join this very nerdy conversation.
The toll-free call-in line is:

so he can do crazy shit that only we will watch and fuck the rest of the world just watched, this is 40...got a feeling that it was taken from an unknown louis ck standup...which would make for a great cable show, but not a movie funny...early woody allen movies were extended bits...then he evolved....think about it saw the 9 minute trek shit....its shit...the score took me totally out of everything and to use the most important line from khan as a throwaway that makes absolutely no sense in context is an affront to all trek fans...happy bday nichelle and its good to see that on stan lee's bday, marvel hasnt got a clue please do not do a top 10 of anything...do worst...more fun django...very good...fun les miz....dont care....was dragged by ex to see the musical....didnt care then
-
so he shouldnt be wasted in any more apatow shite good going hollywood...took the two funniest guys, from one of the funniest brit sitcoms...and shite right on them
-
All I can see is episode recaps, future episode previews, occasional news and more Amazon advertising links than Amazon has itself. If that's all it takes to be a TV critic, then TV Guide has been doing it for decades. And TV Guide is just an inanimate object.
-
You need look no further than the post *immediately below* this one to find my 2011 review of CBS' "A Gifted Man." A much more recent TV review, of this year's best pilot, "Mockingbird Lane": http://www.aintitcool.com/node/59323 Here's one from the month earlier for NBC's "Revolution": http://www.aintitcool.com/node/58374 Go to the AICN Search box and type the name of any network TV show that premiered during the last 13 years. Chances are you'll find my review of it. "When did you start doing TV Criticism?!" you query? Here's one of my earliest TV reviews for Ain't It Cool: a May 31, 2000 review of CBS' "Survivor" series premiere. I'm pleased to say I was the only critic in the world to review it before it aired: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/6100?q=node/6101 Ain't it cool? And for the record, TV Guide posts reviews too. Its chief critic for some years is a fellow named Matt Roush if I'm not mistaken. Head over to TVGuide.com for proof. And if the Amazon and other ad links we utilize here freak you out, you might consider restricting yourself to those those many, many excellent websites that refuse advertising. (Ain't It Cool and TV Guide and the Ask Mr. KERN Archive are obviously not among these.) Hope this helps.
-
Is it your magical BLACK BOX powers or some secret you know to avoid the infamous quotes bug? I'm going to run some tests.
-
"Test" in quotes. I love Mr.KERN. "test" Hercules is Herculean. "Test" My only friend is "Test." It has been said that my "test" gets the job done. And by "test" I mean my "test". "Test" I use Amazon links to give Herc coins. This post is "test" nonsense.
-
Do you ever type a word so much that it doesn't look like a word anymore? "Test" is that word.
-
HERC feel free to delete these "tests"

Alan Sepinwall is an internet-based TV critic. Mostly because he actually reviews, like, a dozen or more shows a week, in-depth. Not a handful of times a year, and certainly not a couple of paragraphs at a time to say that he liked or didn't like it. And on top of all that, he conducts extensive pre/mid/post season wrap-ups and interviews with creators of these shows. HitFix has advertising, I know. But I don't have to scroll through a mile of affiliate links to see what's happening in the often insightful comments section over there. There are entire updates here that have nothing whatsoever to do with television, and are instead a list of affiliate links for stuff that is on sale on Amazon. I only come here occasionally to see where you guys are at in the fall. Like the intercuts in Inception, where we see that van falling off the bridge in mega slow-motion throughout 3/4 of the movie. I was baffled back when McWeeny jumped ship. I thought "Why the heck would someone leave one of the best and most popular entertainment websites on the internet to start up with an unknown entity?!" But now we all know. He didn't jump ship -- he graduated from daycare to real school. AICN used to be first with news, rumors and reviews, but now it's a retweet of stuff that the 'contributors' saw first on other websites that have all evolved and grown through their own histories. So while I was being a snarky dick above, it is not without merit and a long history of frustration with seeing a once-essential website stagnate and then dissolve into irrelevancy.

Herc "test" Kern.

Test
-
No more quotation marks beyond this point. Test 1: Subject was in quotes. Comment appears as typed. Test 2: Appears as typed. Test 3: Appears as typed. Test 4: Subject and comment were in quotes, but no longer. Test 5: Subject was in quotes. Comment appears as typed. Test 6: Subject appears as typed. Comment results in most frustrating form of quotes bug. See below: Long winded paragraph. Quote in quotations. Longer paragraph. When posted the paragraphs disappear and only the quote remains without its marks. Boo.

I was afraid that my vacation on a beautiful (yet rain soaked this morning) island in an undisclosed location would be ruined without my favorite weekly radio show. Alas the house I'm staying in has the miracle known as wireless Internet. Hooray!! I'll be with you all tonight perhaps more intoxicated than usual. Check that. Definitely more intoxicated than usual. Cheers!

Mockingbird Lane was the best US network fare this season.
by Uncle Stan
I watched it with reluctance and was surprised. The original show worked due to the talents and personalities of the cast. Remake shows and movies tend to fail miserably because they can't replace a particular actor. They often make the mistake of trying to have an actor play the original actor playing the role (if that makes any sense). Singer changed the characters enough to avoid this problem. His actors were playing slightly different characters. Grampa and Marilyn had the best lines. Herman's and Eddie's conditions promised potential plot points. And Portia gave me a boner. This could have been a fun show. Instead we get twenty seasons of hilarious hi-jinks like "How I met your big bang theory." Genius, I say. Genius.
-
Guess what? It was fucking awesome!! I checked the KERN archives for a review, but sadly only Nerdling barely gave a shrug. He clearly did not get this movie. And Herc I don't give two fucks what Rotten Tomatoes says. I was bound and determined to hate it because of the subject matter. (Which I love, but feared they would get all the details wrong.) Nope. I was wrong. I figured the GLEE versions of 80's rawk would indeed suck, but no the mash ups were great and served the story well. Tom Cruise has balls. He left nothing behind in this role. Except maybe the milk crate he stood on in scenes with Malin Akerman. Hot! Speaking of hot... Julienne Hough is HOTTER THAN HELL and was perfectly cast as the small town dreamer. I swear it's like she stepped right out of a Poison video. That's the point right? I don't know the male lead, but he is good and good looking. Russell Brand becomes less annoying as time passes. (Love FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL) Paul Giamatti and Alec Baldwin phone it in as Paul Giamatti and Alec Baldwin respectively. I have no problem with that. Throw in a few cameos, a monkey and enough nods to the era to make this rocker happy.
-
I couldn't stand it, actually. Maintaining an audience would have been difficult...too gruesome for the kids, and a bit too silly for many adults. And again I ask - were they going to eat/kill the guest star each week? Whatever the Internet test scores, sometimes the networks have to use common sense, and in one of the rare cases, I think that NBC has. Some old shows are drenched in nostalgia, and "re-imagining" (ugh) them is an exercise in futility. Granted, it worked with "The Brady Bunch" features, so it is possible. Whatever the case, "Lane" appears popular on this site. I'll admit, that I just did not "get it."

moviemanstill - Had a similar reaction to Mockingbird Lane.
by L.H.Puttgrass
As you said, I thought the tone of the show kept jumping back and forth between gruesome and cute & silly. That was a little jarring for me. Here you go! This would be the same thing but different. Lets remake Three's Company! But this time Jack Tripper isn't an up and coming chef. He runs a CSI unit! There you are! You got your slapstick comedy show AND your graphic murder investigation show in one KFC Famous Bowl! Instant hit! Or not. Wake me up when Chrissy Snow is on Jack's exam table...
-
You didn't get any as a child, did you? ;)
-
Blonde or brunette? What's the real color? Just wondering because Sophia Vergara is actually a natural blonde... and a woman. ;)

Yep.

I hope you are doing ok. I was getting a little worried when we didn't have a thread two days in a row.

The trip continues - nasty cold, and all. Will try to remain awake. But staying at parents', and Dad is a minister, which means church in the AM. And will somebody PLEASE verify...I studied French, and was taught the pronunciation "Lay Mi-zey-rah-bleh", but people keep saying "Lay Mi-zey-rahb". I looked it up, and the classic (or whatever) pronunciation appears to be the first. I have no desire to see it, just as I avoided "Phantom" like the plague.
-
Can you guys talk about how all of you came together? Would love to hear the origin story.
-
hope the guy really gets help and a laptop with wifi christ on a cracker...dont people know that there is tons of free porn on the net? and a fucking pox on the lapd, who have nothing better to do than hang out at adult stores and bust guys wacking off in private booths shit man...that is why they are private

Wait.....so it's not pronounced "Less Miserable" with an "s"!?
by Shermdawg
Huh.
-
That gave me a good laugh. Didn't realize how I worded it ... hehe.
-
1) I'm dying. I've had this sickness thing for a month now and I went to the doctor and it's official: pneumonia. So, I've been laid up the past couple of days but there will be a show tonight. 2)ponchobill... how we came together? Not really much of a story, but if you call the program tonight and ask I'll color it all in for ye. 3) Seriously, I know I'm gonna get smacked in the teeth for this, but... who the hell is the broad in the prom picture at the top of the page? Anyone? 4)Gerry Anderson is, and always will be, a god in my eyes. While I spent hours watching CAPT. SCARLETT and THUNDERBIRDS, U.F.O. and SPACE:1999 are big time favorties. The themes for these shows have been playing on our little radio program from day one. I'm heart broken and we will talk about this tonight. 5) ***cough cough cough*** See y'all in a bit!
-
that girl in the prom picture is Rachel Maddow. I KNOW!! You can't believe it! Me neither!

Ha. Well, considering that the show archives aren't usually updated with the previous show until Wednesdays and that there's no one available to fix it when it breaks live, maybe they should have just cancelled tonight. I forgot about this AGAIN! And I was sitting right here at my computer the entire time. *razzafrazzagrumblegrumble*

So I wanted to ask you here to see if the problem you had with LM was because you weren't a fan of musicals in general. What did you think about the choice Hooper made in having them sing live instead of lip syncing to a cast recording? Do you think it gave a better performance for film?
-
...The Sound Of Music and Mary Poppins. I watch them every Christmas and I enjoyed them more this year than I have in quite a few. Julie Andrews was the bomb, yo!

I much prefer The Fugitive, which allowed Gerard to redeem himself by helping ValJ ... er, Kimble

Oh, man, this is too much for color TV - I'm outta here. Next week.....or tomorrow......

You guys should do this more often. Are you secretly on Triton Digital payroll?

I would like to apologize for posting the Louis CK clip about technology. It seems to have taken over the TB.
by L.H.Puttgrass
Unless your name is cjjames1. If so, then it has gone over your head and it doesn't really bother you at all. You should be able to go right to sleep and feel refreshed and ready to go tomorrow morning. Goodnight cj.

Herc used to do real reviews and recaps of popular shows that were, dare I say, some of the best written articles on AICN.
-
But what about my question regarding Hooper's choice to have them sing live?
-
How many times have I told you people not to play with the lock on his cage?
-
I don't know how well I'll sleep without the sexy smooth voice of Mr. KERN ushering me to dreamland. Oh well, I guess I'll slip on my headphones and let the death metal lullabies pummel me into a coma. Sleep...sleep forever.
-
If it ever goes to series. He should be the center of the show and not be such a bore.
-
a) A link is supplied to a Louis CK stand-up segment, in which he mocks people for bitching about problems with technology, when just the fact of its existence, is amazing. b) You bitch about technology. c) We refer you to that link. d) You continue to bitch about technology, without even understanding what we are saying. e) We explain. f) You say you'd rather see/hear it live. (What? Louis CK routine? Ask Mr Kern?) g) We explain, again. h) Rinse, lather and repeat.
-
I can't help it if you can't follow the conversation or if, for some reason, you are obsessed with my posts.
-
Fact update: 1. You don't like Louis CK. 2. You're going to have a stunning head of hair. ;)
-
I am obsessed with you, cj, OBSESSED.
-
Louis C K - hot (If you're confused, cj, I'm the gay one.)
-
Our pals here can be quite stubborn when trying to drive a point home. Don't be discouraged. Please come back next week and join the fun? And fellas take it easy on poor cj, we don't want to scare away anymore people. Although it was quite busy in here last night for a complete NO SHOW. I didn't even post my typical 30+ comments. And you're the gay one movieman? I didn't know. And L.H. Go Panthers! Sorry gotta run. I here Gin and her pal Tonic calling. Mmm...tastes like Christmas.

I appreciate your thoughts, however I've been an aicn fan for many years so I'm used to the guys who never get the point or become obsessed. I even remember the great debate over talkbacks in general. Its no prob. I do still hope they can get last night's show up before the usual Wednesday. I enjoy listening to it here in Nevada.

deceased... - I'm impressed. I didn't know you had that much control over the team. Thanks.
by L.H.Puttgrass
Don't over use your power though. Newton's pass to Vilma was a little much. Somebody might get suspicious. Oh, who am I kidding? WOO! HOO!! 17-13! You're going DOWNTOWN!!! ;)

Listen kids. Don't attempt split personalities with poor phone reception.

Man, Mr.KERN you sound turrible. You should've took the week off.
by Shermdawg
Oh, Sparky was off... Well dammit, if you're THAT sick, screw the show, cancel it next time. Your health comes first.
-
But I like some of the ads. :( Still, no ads is pretty cool.
-
Wait....this isn't about the OZ thing is it? YOU CAN'T BREAK UP WITH US OVER FUCKING WIZARD OF OZ, MAN.
-
on SUNDAY. Like it! have no interest in Le Miserable, will see Django and Hobbit. Also looked at some other movie sites recommended by others on here. Still prefer AICN, so suck it!!!
