Tarantino teases third film in his revisionist history trilogy called KILLER CROW!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I don't know about you fine folks, but the more Quentin Tarantino wants to play with history the more excited I get as a filmgoer. Right now it feels like QT's just having fun and when Tarantino has fun we have fun.
In an interview with Henry Louis Gates Jr. at The Root, Quentin discusses a future feature that would close out his "revisionist history" trilogy that includes Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained.
This one currently (and tentatively) titled Killer Crow and goes back to WW2 and follows a squad of black troops who have been fucked over by the American military and rage a bloody rampage through Europe as they head for Switzerland.
This story began as a story to be included in Inglourious Basterds back when Tarantino was considering making it a mini-series, but was excised when he decided to make it a feature. Tarantino said it's half-written and that should he make it, the Inglourious Basterds would indeed feature in the story.
I love it. This sounds to me like what I had pictured in my mind when Inglourious Basterds was announced: an epic, bloody men on a mission WW2 movie... in this case the mission is to get the fuck out of dodge and kill Nazis and asshole racist US military people while heading that way.
I really do hope there's a place for Sam Jackson amongst the troop. Then we would get Nick Fury in WW2!

by terry1978
Gotta talk to Tarantino about that, he does feel he's an honorary brother.
-
for a revisionist tale of the Native Americans vs the Colonials. Natives go all tomahawk on their asses. It would BLOOOODY!
-
What's 'revisionist history' about that, BTW? Were they not really oppressed?
-
ooooh quentin likes to dabble in revisionist history, where the oppress win, always. God i hate this shit. it doesn't make slavery or the holocaust any better for it...just some lame fuck white boy guilt. not saying that awful shit was awful, the holocaust and what not, but jesus fucking christ, give me a fucking break....ooooh he killed hitler though the real hitler lived longer to kill more people and nothing quentin can do about it, and now, oooooh bunch of black folks got all slavery and shit and treated wrong, so this makes up for that. FUCK THIS SHIT.
-
Would be interesting to see "Killer Crow."

Went in with pretty big expectations, and still had a great time. Everybody in the multi-racial crowd loved it. Tarantino may never top PULP FICTION, which was perhaps the last TRUE game-changer we had in American cinema... but damn, he's hit a new stride, making amazingly entertaining historical epics.

Is there a role for Sigourney?

I'd rather he do that one first because it's new ground, and then get onto the War movie follow-up. A Tarantino 30's gangster movie would be brilliant, probably.. His sensibilities would go hand in hand.

Django Unchained and Inglorious Basterds are among Tarantino's greatest films
by Nerd Rage
Why the fuck would he avoid making another badass historical "what if" movie? Would you prefer he do another half-hearted project like Death Proof? Tarantino has caught the history bug and it's some of his best work since Pulp Fiction. Sorry that he sympathizes with past victims of white supremacy but not all directors are going to conveniently forget every sin of America's past. If they did it would be creepy and downright Orwellian.

I loved Inglorious Basterds, so another Tarantino romp through World War II is fine by me
by lv_426
After that, maybe he'll tackle a genre he hasn't dabbled in yet... science fiction? Not a Star Wars or Trek style story, but maybe something that merges Tarantino's sensibilities with a sci-fi concept. How about a film set in the 50's or 60's dealing with Area 51 and UFO conspiracy cover-ups and all that jazz? So it would be sort of another revisionist history merged with retro Americana sci-fi.
-
Quentin recently said something about how he basically has to adapt Anna Karenina for all of his movies. In other words, his screenplays are all so large he ends up having to leave chunks of material out of most of his finished movies (save for Kill Bill, apparently). He also recently complained about the fact that film is going the way of the dodo and expressed interest in doing actual TV work. Why not? I'd love to see Quentin make a premium cable mini-series.
-
Dec. 28, 2012, 3:34 p.m. CST
QT should make the movie adaptation of The Authority superhero comic.
by frank
Ofc he will need at least 100m to do that but ofc HW is not crazy enough to give him the money for this specific group of heroes.
-
...with a badass gang it could be pretty cool. I'd much prefer to see him go back to the pulp novels to be honest... plenty of great Elmore Leonard stuff left to tackle.
-
I'd be interested in seeing him produce some TV. HBO would be a perfect home for a Tarantino series of miniseries. Maybe he'd write the majority of the episodes, and direct the pilot and season finale, while getting other directors to do the episodes in-between. Kinda like Martin Scorsese directing the pilot for Boardwalk Empire, then overseeing stuff as a producer. TV is called a writer's and producer's medium compared to the director's medium that is theatrical film.

If Tarantino's serious about retiring at sixty...
by Nasty In The Pasty
...I'd rather not see him treading over the same ground with another WWII flick, as much as I loved Basterds. If he were the kid of filmmaker who made a movie every two years or less, I'd love to see it, but if we're only gonna get at most three new films (given his three-year avaerage between films) from him in the next decade, I'd rather see his tackle another genre. A 30's-era gangster flick sounds just right for his sensibilities, and would be a big tip of the hat to De Palma's The Untouchables. Plus, that rat-a-tat-tat Cagney-style dialogue delivery is right up Tarantino's alley.
-
I'm surprised he hasn't to be honest.
-

Didn't you hear his comments on guns just a few days ago (that didn't clue you in)? Granted, his angle is a bit different than the straight, in-yo-face race card baiting, but he carries the same luggage (just in a different kind of bag). For example: BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE. He makes a cartoon inferring that the KKK transferred into the NRA, when the research into the birth of the NRA one will discover... that former President Ulysses S. Grant not only created the NRA, but created it as a means of hunting down the KKK, which at the time was akin to Al Qaeda. Or in other words, Mikey Moore likes to see himself as the man who ties the white guilt to the cause and the source.

He would make it about Arab American soldiers in the Iraq war. Or is that *too* on the nose?
-
I'm so tired of Tarantino announcing all these promising sounding action epics and then we all end up with is 3 hours of people fucking talking. Enough with this overrated jizzbucket and his infatuation with his own voice.
-
That movie changed, hollywood, changed moviemaking, changed careers, started careers. It's still as brilliant today. Basterds is a joke compared to it. How people keep forgetting it is beyond me. I personally couldn't stand Deathproof or Basterds, but that doesn't mean I still don't get excited when QT releases another flick.
-
1. If somebody like Django has existed in real life, he would have been lynched after a day or so. You all know this to be true. 2. There were countless massacres of whites by Indians, but since Native Americans had no qualms about torturing and mutilating defenseless women and children, I doubt modern audiences would go for a movie about that. 3. QT should piss off everybody by making a movie about opressesed Palestinians killing their Israeli occupiers.
-
It's getting ludicrous. And the blood looks worse than Reservoir Dogs'.
-
It makes a lotta sense that the premise originally came from Inglourious Basterds, because if you take away the fact that the squad is black, this sounds pretty much exactly like the premise to The Inglorious Bastards. AND I LOVE IT. Can't wait for this one. I'm sure it will be very, very different though. The original flick isn't even particularly good, but an awesome, enjoyable B-flick nonetheless. Keep 'em comin' Tarantino!
-
Yep - still no obituary on the site. Poor.

-
Yep, the same as every culture/race/ethnicity does to every other culture/race/ethnicity. Only an idiot would argue that what happened to either the American Indians or the slaves brought to America isn't beyond foul and disgusting. It is, and it always will be. But imo, that doesn't mean that everyone needs to be sunburn sensitive with their knee jerk reactions whenever anyone who isn't considered exactly the correct person approaches said culture's/race's/ethnicity's customs and traditions. It's gotten a bit ridiculous, to be honest.
-
...I was actually referring to QT doing a movie where the American Indians whooped ass on the white man. But he isn't Indian, and all of the cast and crew wouldn't be Indian, so it would become an epic controversy of the highest order, regardless of what the movie was actually about. How about *ahistorical* These two films, Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained, may be interesting or fun or something, but historical they are not. That is, unless you concede that, well, WWII took place, and there was such a thing as slavery in America. Otherwise, there is absolutely nothing historical about them, and I can't believe an intelligent person would believe them to be anything other than fantasy....not that there's anything wrong with fantasy.....that's what movies usually are. So leave off the Revisionist tripe, or some poor devil just might read this site and think, *gee, that's a another good way of looking at real history.* Weeping Jesus on the cross.
-
Yeah, we get that. In general, do you really think the AICN contributors and talkbackers are so stupid as to not fully understand those points? It's just a term that's been re-appropriated as a way to describe these movies. Such is the way of the English language.
-
Is this the story that was supposed to star Eddie Murphy? Either way, yes please.
-
Yes please. Let's face it. He's in the same boat Travolta was in years ago before the Pulp. A Thousand Words and Tower Heist were like giving Einstein an abacus to "play with". Wasted talent. Please include him. I haven't even seen Django yet and I know it's good. You're welcome. Peace out.

- Ulysses S. Grant was merely the 8th president of the NRA. He did not create it. - The NRA was not created to hunt down the KKK. It was created because some people thought the markmanship of soldiers in the civil war was really, really bad. Their solution was to improve the markmanship of the general populace, which now included former slaves in former states with slavery. THAT didn't sit well with the KKK. But it wasn't hunted down. Seems Moore knows more than you about American history.
-
So there are these black American soldiers who kill their way through Europe, leaving a trail of dead Nazis, Italian fascists and racist Allied troops on their way to the safe neutral zone of Switzerland, where they... settle down and invent chocolate, skiing and the cuckoo clock. make a movie about the beginning of the slave trade, you know, when all the slaves were captured in raids by rival African tribes and then sold to the Portugese, English, etc. for copper bracelets and whatnot. Oh wait, you didn't know that Europeans hardly captured any African slaves themselves, that they just bought them from chieftains who had been practicing slavery since the dawn of humanity and still continued to practice it after it was banned in the West. The Europeans didn't have to even make the dangerous trek into the African interior, there were slave ports on the coasts set up by the African kings to sell their neighbors. It had proven to be very lucrative for the larger victorious tribes. African leaders had been selling war prisoners to the Arabs as slaves for a thousand years, so it was all old hat to them by the time of Columbus. Interesting stuff. Somebody could make a flick about that.

People complain about the violence in his flicks, but he's starting to remind me of this female professor (white) who has built an entire career focused on African-American studies. She's never going to be wrong and can stand in simple black and white judgment of history and its treatment of blacks. I'm not saying she's wrong for her stance...but it's safe. No one can ever attack her. I think a really bold filmmaker would ask balls out questions, like, why did the German state hate the Jews so much? Were they really simple victims (ala Basterds)? Or did they possess some twisted value system or way of moving in the world that pissed off people enough to condone mass genocide? Real growth can't come without asking a few icky, politically incorrect questions, people.

Sanford and gun, so now math is racist? Wow, you people will blame everything but yourselves! Here's some stats fo dat stoopid azz!
by Banned-ki-moon
-Of the nearly 770,000 violent interracial crimes committed every year involving Blacks and Whites, Blacks commit 85 percent and Whites commit 15 percent. -Blacks commit more violent crime against whites than against blacks. 45 percent of their victims are white, 43 percent are Black, and 10 percent are Hispanic. When Whites commit violent crime, only three percent of their victims are Black. -Blacks are an estimated 39 times more likely to commit a violent crime against a White than vice versa, and 136 times more likely to commit robbery.

Sociological studies, lol. So why aren't black guys writing these studies? That pretty much answers the "why" question.
-
That just sucks.
-
Just look at all the poor neighborhoods that are either all black or Hispanic and you see why blacks are way more I violent in crimes and especially violent crimes than whites. Fact. That's why jails are full of them. Fix the poverty and get people educated and this will get better. Yhis movie is more black revenge porn

Until I realized that he keeps making the same movie over and over again, and it's not even a very good movie. The luster of Pulp Fiction has long since worn off. The endless, mean-spirtied violence has begun to really disturb me. Tarantino says that he will retire from film after two more films, and the film world will be better off without him. Go see Life of Pi instead.
-
Hell—Cloud Atlas is more worthwhile than DU... Daring, high-wire filmmaking on a grand scale. That movie came from the Washowski's hearts.
-
...in interviews, he's prone to making very simplistic and knee-jerk statements about race and racism... and yet if you watch his movies, it's as if they were directed by someone else entirely. Example: Remember when Spike snapped at an interviewer "Black people aren't racist?" And yet there's a beautifully played scene in Inside Man where an African-American cop is called out, essentially, for engaging in a subtle form of racism (assuming that a Sikh civilian is a Muslim).
-
You could see his obsession from the tones and undertones of racism in all of his movies. I'm not being apologetic about the issue at all, but it's a downer when I watch a Lee movie and his burden becomes a caricature in all his films. He's talented, but if he were to let go and just have some fun for once, I'd think we'd see him tap into his most fully realized potential. He's letting his own skeletons ride his films. He can do whatever he wishes, but he was very wrong in attacking Tarantino and pulling the race card. Again, an example of Lee's skeletons seeping out into the real world and even dictating his fantasy agendas amongst his film peers.

I don't actually care what anybody thinks of me as a talkbacker or my posts in general (more inside)
by Jaka
Process, actually THINK about what I'm posting, or don't. I don't actually care either way. But I've been here for a long ass time, and anybody who has any kind of a history with my posts perfectly well understood that my frustration was with the constant bitching about a lack or obituaries for every single person who dies in EVERY. SINGLE. TALKBACK. And some of them go on for months! The disrespect was clearly directed at the inane posting of those complaints, not Gerry Anderson. Lastly, since not a single one of you ACTUALLY KNEW HIM, or any of the other people who die, get the fuck over your own self-righteous bullshit, already. People die, it's sad. May they all rest peacefully. But the constant complaining about AICN not doing an obituary for each and every one of them is sadly idiotic. Even worse, once somebody posted an obit for Gerry Anderson, the talkback is FILLED with complaints that it isn't good enough. lol

by Jaka
He has an agenda, anyone who thinks otherwise is fooling themselves. I don't fault him for that. Hell, more power to him if that's the road he wants to travel. But in my opinion he's on the side that continues to poor salt and lemon into the already obviously gaping wounds, instead of looking for solutions, or ways to heal them. Spike WANTS to make people uncomfortable and he does a very fine job of it.

The average white person has a 3% encounter rate when it comes to encountering a black person.
The average black person has a 57% encounter rate when it comes to encountering a white person.
When you adjust for this...(using the raw numbers that you so graciously provided)
Whites victimized blacks at a 50% higher rate than is statistically possible (considering the white to black encounter rate is 3%)
If you're gonna do the math, do it all.

Civil War started in 1861. Seriously, white folks, stop calling Django revisionist/alternate history or historical fantasy. It's just HISTORICAL FICTION.
by Baked
In order for it to be revisionist, it has to take a specific historical event and completely change it. That shit doesn't happen in the movie. It's no more alternate history or historical fantasy than The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly or Unforgiven or True Grit. White reviewer: "Black guy killed some white people! SUCH FANTASTICAL EVENTS!!!!" Black people killed LOTS of white people right before the Civil War. That was the style of the time.
-
im with you 1000000%. id much rather see his take on the mobster 30's. we've seen his WW2 take, now we've seen his 'civil war-ish' take, and i suppose if the theme/setting of 'war' is the constant that runs through this 'trilogy' of sorts, then perhaps WW1 or maybe even vietnam could be a way to go... however the 'mob wars' in chicago & the 30's & such would fit in nicely with that whole idea. and again, i'd much rather see that than another trip to WW2. though in a way, the idea of this 'killer crow' does tie together IG & DU. so i guess it's fitting. it's just his version of those 30's mobsters would be something we haven't seen already. and if he truly is calling it quits after #10, then i'd rather see new stuff while we can.

Yes I'm black and I wasn't offended my girl that I went with wasn't offended. Granted I love Westerns anyway, but to see a Western with a Black Man as the lead, and taking revenge against disgusting racists slave owners! I loved that movie, and Christoph Waltz deserves another OSCAR. Easily my favorite movie of the year. When I first heard the concept of Killer Crow I was like uh I don't know. But after seeing Django I was suprised and how much I loved that movie. So I'm willing to jump on board and see where QT goes.
-
You're straining to try to troll for some good black crime statistics. Get real. Blacks are in jail tons because they commit tons of crimes and violent crimes. Fact. Writing it doesn't make it false.
-
I agree that there have been moments, both in Spike Lee's movies and in his public statements, when he can be preachy and simplistic on the topic of race. But I also think there have been a lot of moments when he engages the topic of race in a much more interesting manner. A lot of Lee's most memorable characters have been, for want of a better phrase, "likeable racists". Think of that final scene in Do the Right Thing when Sal loses his shit and screams the N-word at his customers. It's a gripping scene because by that point, we've gotten to know Sal; we like Sal; we believe him to be a basically decent human being, a guy who tries to "do the right thing" and usually succeeds. We're saddened and a little horrified to see him behave this way, but we also find his behavior believable. We understand how it comes about that a guy like Sal would pull out the N-word in a moment of fury. And that's uncomfortable to watch, in a good way. It's quite different from the way racists are usually portrayed onscreen-- as idiots, buffoons, or sheer unadulterated villains-- as People Totally Unlike Us.

I GET IT! 'It's historical fantasy because my Southern elementary school didn't teach me about all this violence and racism!'
by Baked
Except for the part where it actually happened. The face masks? Authentic. The neck irons with the barbs on them? Well-documented. http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42554000/jpg/_42554053_masks.jpg The mandingo fighting? Yeah, that's also real. The dogs and the beatings and the rape? Legit. Even the lynch mobs riding around with hoods are historically accurate. The KKK didn't invent that. Hell, QT was accurate down to the strict gun control in Southwestern towns at the time, showing why Schultz didn't draw his pistol and had to use a hidden wrist gun in order to kill his attacker. The fantasy is that the characters never existed, not that the social mores and relationships never existed. And that no more makes this story fantasy than Law and Order or ER or Kramer vs. Kramer. It's fiction. It's historical. It's historical fiction. Push against reality all you want, it tends to be an inflexible, infuriating, and indifferent fuck.

With the addition of US soldiers killing other US soldiers, of course. And, undoubtedly, not as much humor as the Kelly's Heroes, which is a damn funny action/war movie. Meh...
-
I respect your opinion. She's not saying it could not have possibly happened, but it's not likely, and she's DEFINITELY not using it to deny slavery. However, my suspicion is that QT's "research" amounted to watching Mandingo (presumably with little Harry in the same theatre.) he compares Mandingo to Showgirls, which of course is a stunning expose of the plight of sex workers...
