Capone finds JACK REACHER a prime example of the less-is-more school of action!!!
Hey everyone. Capone in Chicago here.
Right off the bat, I'll admit I don't know a thing about author Lee Chidl's series of books featuring the ex-military investigator known as Jack Reacher. As a result, I don't give a damn about whether this fictional character is written as a six-and-a-half-foot-tall small house of a man, or a little stick of short-fused dynamite named Tom Cruise. Going into JACK REACHER, I was curious to see if Cruise could pull off an action character that was significantly different than the ones he's played in so many other films, particularly the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE movies. And I'm happy to report that Reacher is nothing like Ethan Hunt. Whereas Hunt is gadgeted to the teeth, sleek and endlessly confident, Reacher is a rough-around-the-edges soldier who has few social graces and a fighting style that requires as little movement on this part as possible. He's a trained killer who has spent most of his career going after other trained killers. He's just a little better at his job.
The film begins with the assassination of a seemingly random number of citizens out in the middle of the day for their lunch. A suspect is picked up who seems beyond guilty, and he scribbles down a note to the police that have him—"Get Jack Reacher."—before he slips into a coma. But no sooner has the District Attorney (Richard Jenkins) started trying to track down Reacher, then the man himself strolls into his office to figure out why this total stranger summoned him.
What surprised me most about JACK REACHER wasn't just the economic filmmaking and action sequences that come at the hands of adaptor/director Christopher McQuarrie (THE WAY OF THE GUN and writer of THE USUAL SUSPECTS) but also the time devoted to actually solving the many mysteries unveiled during this course of the investigation. What especially fascinating about Cruise's take on Reacher is two-fold: he's got a dry, dark sense of humor and he seems completely devoid in social pleasantries, especially when dealing with the murder suspect's lawyer, Helen (Rosamund Pike), who just happens to be the DA's daughter. David Oyelowo is also on hand as the lead investigating detective in the mass murder case.
Reacher's own investigation brings him into the company of some of the most interesting villains I've seen in quite some time, including Jai Courtney as the button man for a criminal leader named The Zec, played by the incomparable director (and occasional actor) Werner Herzog, who just looks horribly strung out in every scene he's in. The film's cast takes part and/or is the victim of some fairly shocking levels of brutal violence that is in no way glorified. McQuarrie has made the decision to go this route, and the results are unlike most studio action films. One last cast member who must be mentioned is Robert Duvall as Cash, a gun store owner who is something of a kindred spirit to Reacher and is certainly the closest thing Reacher has to a soulmate (or perhaps a glimpse into his future). Their scenes are probably my favorite in the film.
JACK REACHER isn't exactly breaking new ground; if anything, it's taking a few steps back and remembering how basic a fight scene or chase sequence can get and still be wonderfully effective. There's something refreshingly old school about director McQuarrie's visuals, Cruise's acting choices, and Duvall and Herzog just being plain-old badass. This isn't the best of the holiday offerings, but it might be the best action flick of the season.

Yeah, I'm proud of that joke, even though it's undoubtedly been made 1,000,000 times and is hopelessly juvenile.

Reasonably entertaining flick. The movie is quite tight and focused, and McQuarrie knows what he is doing. Cruise is of course not Jack Reacher, he is Tom Cruise, just like in any other of his movies. Tom Cruise does not have the physical presence nor the voice to portrait a character like Reacher, and obviously McQuarrie is very aware of that. They did make the mistake of trying to pass of Cruise's character as smart, but this simply does not work. Werner Herzog is not a very good actor, but he has so much charisma that I was disappointing he had relatively little screen time. Overall, I wouldn't mind to see another Reacher flick, preferably with a more suitable actor, but Cruise will do.

Another movie at odds with itself. Blunt and brutal, yet pg-13. Taken left a bad taste in my mouth for that very reason, and I have a feeling this will do the same. If you want to make a R rated movie, then make it fucking R. A R rated movie snipped and trimmed to a pg-13 is like a shower in a raincoat.

Cruise is over a foot shorter and about 100 pounds from Jack Reacher.
by Bob
And he's Tom Cruise as Tom Cruise being Jack Reacher. Reacher in the books had presence, height, and strength to go with his skills. Tom Cruise trying to pull of the same thing will probably be laughable. But I think McQuarrie could save this, I'll have to wait and see.

Just saw it and Tom Cruise has himself a great action/detective franchise here! One that actually fits his age too.

Kind of the way Tom Selleck started doing the Jesse Stone tv movies. It's a great movie to see while waiting for Django to open on Christmas day.

That is my theory anyway. Have you noticed the huge amount of access AICN has regarding Paramount movies lately? Have you noticed that Paramount movies get great to average reviews while other studios get fair and balanced reviews? I just wonder of "Harry" has anything to do with AICN anymore beyond being a figure head and that the writers are staff writers like any other publication.

The title and trailers do nothing to instill an interest in this movie.
by thedarklinglord
Seriously. 'Jack Reacher' as a title is as dull and lifeless as 'John Carter' - though, at least that trailer had freaky fantasy/sci-fi stuff that might almost spark your curiosity to see what the hell is was all about. But if you didn't read the books and know who Jack Reacher was, that title would make you think, "Who the fuck is Jack Reacher and why should I give a shit?" And the trailers just look generic as fuck. Like some mutant baby of The Firm and Taken, but only if Taken didn't have Liam Neeson's commanding presence to sell you on the notion that people were going to get fucked up in a brutal, no-nonsense way. While Cruise wouldn't be my first choice for Reacher (Ray Stevenson or Liev Schrieber would've been preferable), I don't have the venomous hatred for him that a lot of people do and it's not him that kills this; it's the fact that nothing I've seen inspires any level of excitement. The trailers have none of the vitality of Taken, or Bourne, or the Jack Ryan movies, or even the fucking teddy bear brawl of Ted. It looks dull and makes me sleepy. And that's just sad.

I have not read any of the Reacher novels so had no baggage about his stature vs. Cruise's. It was a nicely shot, well-written, decently acted action movie. Unlike some folks, I don't need the R-level gut-spewing every time I go to the cinema. This movie is a nice little 2 hours spent.
-
It's one of those films that's a lot of fun to watch, actually clever sometimes, and has some pretty tasty dialogue raise up now and again. Then sometimes it's really stupid and the dialogue makes you cringe. Overall though, it was worth the price of admission... and those that are fans of McQuarrie's 'Way of the Gun' know the man can shoot great action with actual geography. On this level in particular, the film is refreshing. The addition of Werner Herzog as the film's big bad doesn't hurt one bit either.
-
I'm going in blind never read any of the Reacher books, but this makes me want to. And I really want to see this movie.

He's like 5'7".... And granted, if this character is 6'6", that's a big difference, but that is hardly new in Hollywood. Half the actors listed on imdb are at least an inch or two shorter than they're listed as- or did you REALLY think the average man was 6' tall? Hate to break it to you, but the average American man is just around 5'9" to 5'10". I'm 6'2" and even to me a lotttttt of guys I walk past daily seem very short. Just saying. I hear where you're coming from- it is a legitimately big difference in stature since unless he is surrounded by dwarves he'll never pass for 6'6"... But you guys make out like the guy us freakishly short when he's only a couple of inches less than most of you short fuckers who call him tiny but are only 5'10" yourselves, despite what I'm sure you claim. Question- is size more important to you than acting ability? If so, my cousin is 7'2" and my other one is 6'6"- maybe they should play it even though they have virtually no acting background? Yeah I thought not.
-
it was boring. poorly edited especially during the car chases. and Cruise is laughable when trying to be tough. this needed somebody big, literally, like the Rock or the like to pull it off. Cruise looks like a midget wrestler, without the irony. even Duvall was wasted in this mess, playing the wise old sensei yet again. I was more surprised by Richard jerkins who is pretty useless in this just as he was in the recent Brad Pitt piece of crap. oh where have the tough guys gone? back in the 50's JAck reacher woudl be played by Robert Mitchum, in the 60's by Lee marvin, in the 70's by Bronson. any of them, even dead woudl be better than Tomcat on his best day.
-
I enjoyed the movie but the more I think about it the more the plot just falls in on itself. I'd recommend it. Duvall was awesome.

"the man himself strolls into his office to figure out why this total stranger summoned him" Did you actually see this movie?
by Cosmik
Its a very clear plot point that a) He wasn't a total stranger and b) he didn't go because, or even know that, he was summoned.
-
Is this a movie where Tom Cruise is the action hero lead? ---> Yes ----> Watch some other movie.
-
I just can't watch this. Size is important in this series; as he is 6'5" he intimidates just by showing up, and avoids a lot of violence by that. Once the shit starts, it take a LOT to take him down, where a 5'6" 170# pussyboy would be taken out with one shot (see what I did there? lol).

Funny, the reviews I've read of this makes this sound like an entertaining episode of Mannix.
by openthepodbaydoorshal
Is old school code word for pedestrian, in this instance?
-
Action was old school and impact full. Tom seem to have done most of the driving in the chase - made it effective. Solid and sometimes witty dialogue. Funny moments also. (Bathroom attack) Story actually takes the time to develop and has a mystery to tell. Be it a bit far fetched. Direction was capable. No really style or look but it still worked. And thankfully no shaky cam BS. Music score was the only true dissapoitment.
