"Gaiking" Mecha Anime Remake Finds Hollywood Backers

Back in 2010, Toei showed off a pair of CG proof of concepts for remakes pf space opera Captain Harlock and mecha Gaiking. In spring 2011, we heard that Harlock was in progress, planned for 2013. Gaiking was silent, until now. Variety reports that Gale Anne Hurd's(Terminator, Aliens) Valhalla Entertainment and Toei Animation have signed on with All Nippon Entertainment Works for a feature version of Gaiking.
Hurd will be lead producer and Yoshi Ikezawa of Toei Animation and Joseph Chou (Appleseed Ex Machina, Halo Legends, live action Evangelion - seriously) will also produce.
The project is the first development deal for ANEW, which has been set up by Innovation Network Corporation of Japan to partner with Japanese rights holders to develop English language movies and TV.
A localized version of Gaiking aired regionally in the US as part of the Force Five syndication block, which also included Dangard Ace, Starvengers (Getter Robo G), Grandizer and Spaceketeers (Starzinger). Gaiking was also licensed for use in Mattel's Shogun Warriors robot toy line, which in turn was licensed for a Marvel Comics series.
The 2005 remake Gaiking: Legend of Daiku-Maryu is streaming on Crunchyroll.

The 2010 teaser from Tokyo International Anime Fair.

I was WONDERING when they'd revive the Shogun Warriors!
by AlienFanatic
With GDT's homage to the giant mecha genre with Pacific Rim, it seems time that the great granddaddy of the genre is resurrected. Maybe we can get them to re-issue the old toys, too, so we don't have to pay through the nose to get them. :)
-
Tell me that would not be freaking amaze balls, just watch the show and you will see.
-

Gotta say, though, that I was always partial to Great Mazinga/Mazinger. The knuckle rockets were awesome.
by AlienFanatic
It seems Mazinger also pre-dated Gaiking by about three years.
-
I freaking loved that when I was a kid that and Voltron!!!!!! With what Del-Toro has done with Pacific Rim could we actually get a live action Voltron or possible Tranzor Z?
-
Dec. 19, 2012, 10:03 a.m. CST
@green gargantua Let's just hope they do a better job reviving it than the folks that did Space Battleship Yamato, eh? :)

MAZINGER Z, GETTER ROBO, GRENDIZER, COMBATTLER V, GO-LION or as you know him VOLTRON
by the Green Gargantua
Will all be made into films. I Digress, mecha is the new superhero
-
At some point the giant pile of cash that Transformers is sitting on will connect in the minds of studios everywhere with the giant pile of cash that Pacific Rim is about to make and then will come the post-superhero "Giant Robot" era of films. It's on folks. Too much money on the table not to greenlight every reasonably popular property. Some will be great, some will suck but we'll welcome them all because it's about God damn time we saw some cool Japanese robots on the big screen!
-
Dec. 19, 2012, 10:41 a.m. CST
You will probably get GENESIS CLIMBER MOSPEADA before MACROSS. The rights to Macross are completely FUBAR

I wish the Pacific Rim robots looked more like Gaiking
by rev_skarekroe
You just can't beat the simpler, samurai influenced designs of the '70s Shogun Warriors era giant robots.

And coming soon (GASP!) a Live action Gatchaman feature film. About Fucking Time!

Dec. 19, 2012, 12:24 p.m. CST
I concur Space Battleship Yamato wasn't bad, as a matter of fact it's way better than the shitfest that was Battleship.
by Stalkeye
The Gantz films were actually decent as well.

Hey, WHAT Gatchaman movie? I had only heard of one and it was 100% cgi animation like "The Incredibles"

yeah i know that Devilman and especially the Cutey Honey Movie (Which are among my all time favorite Nagai Animes.) failed miserably to live up to expectations, but atleast Yamato was good for your underbudget Japanese flick. Same goes for Gantz: Perfect Answer and the way I see it, if Hollywood wont give these franchises a live action adaptation, well i guess It's up to Japan to do it themselves regardless of underperforming CGI or campy dialogue. Beggars can't be choosers. And after watching abortions like GIJoe ROC and Transformers, well The Japanese ain't looking so bad. Casshern had great potential but it was in serious need of a good edit. Nah, you're not an Dickehad cause you definately know your shit and yes, a Giant Robo film helmed by Burton would be the Bitch's tits.Imagine the Experts of Justice taking on Big Fire. Just who would you cast for Ginrei? I can name a number of Mecha based Animes that would be great for a proper Live action treatment, but that's for another time.

BTW the CGI Garchaman remained in development hell until it was ultimately cannedas the studio Imagi closed it's doors for good.
by Stalkeye
-
But I swear to God 98% of this Japanese culture stuff is just absolute CRAP. What are they over there, retarded?
-
Dec. 19, 2012, 4 p.m. CST
stalkeye, I actually envisioned Burton's take to be along the lines of the live action tv show
by the Green Gargantua
however, for Ginrei? Megumi Kagurazaka from "Cold Fish" gave me yellow fever like never before

by lv_426
Maybe we'll even get a big budget version of The War of the Gargantuas?
-
Dec. 19, 2012, 4:43 p.m. CST
lv_426 , I have the designs for RED, BLACK and WHITE Gargantua sitting right here on my drafting table.
by the Green Gargantua
sitting right next to my outline for "Planet of the Gargantuas" Yes, a half Japanese American, named Alexander (or Sandy) wanders the ruins of a Gargantua trampled planet in a protective armored suit, collecting tissue samples from the plethora of Gargantuas created by blowing so many chunks off the last two that his parents had to deal with in the last film. Most of the surviving population lives underground. Think "Shadow of The Colossus" in an alternate future. Better get my kickstarter going... I wonder how much Toho will sell me the rights for??
-
It is funny too as it sounds a little like my own wacky kaiju type story I've been itching to write... as I also had some people living underground in my concept. Well, at least in basement type houses cause they get tired of rebuilding normal houses above ground after another kaiju comes bumbling along to destroy the neighborhood! As for some collector type of idea, mine had a new profession in the post-kaijupocalypse world... Desolation Seekers. These are people that can make good money by going out into the wastelands and destroyed cities and collecting anything of value (technology, books, art, or other culturally important artifacts). So don't feel that I'm aiming to rip off your Planet of the Gargantuas idea. Great minds think alike I guess. You should definitely write Planet of the Gargantuas though, or if you can, change just a few details and make it your own thing. That way you won't have to worry about copyrights mumbo jumbo. For a title, how about... PLANET OF THE FALLEN GIANTS? Perhaps that sounds epic enough and keeps your basic concept intact?

Started as fan fiction comic for a friend's Metal/horror zine, it has since grown quite a bit.
by the Green Gargantua
People from punk and metal bands writing/drawing about horror and monsters. Thing is the ending is very フランケンシュタインの怪獣 サンダ対ガイラ specific, it involves the heart of Frankenstein and Nazi black science. I may look into pitching the comic version to IDW who I believe has the comic rights to all of the kaiju....
-
If the pitch to IDW doesn't pan out, I'll definitely contribute to your Kickstarter if you end up just producing the comic by yourself.
-
vs. Giant Bees.
-
i think maybe Del Toro's Pacific Rim is proving there is interest out there for giant mecha movies. i guess the Transformers aren't considered mecha, because they don't have pilots.

ZZZzzzzzzz
