A Wicked Witch Shows Up In The New One Sheet For OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL!!
The Kidd here...
I keep getting a Burton's ALICE IN WONDERLAND vibe from everything I've seen from Sam Raimi's OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL, and I am really hoping that such a comparison couldn't be further from the truth once we get the finished film in March. The trio of witches alone - Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams - are enough to hold my interest for the time being as I keep worrrying about visuals that are cool but empty substitute for any type of engaging story.
However, the new teaser poster for Disney's film has restored a bit of confidence my way that Raimi is up for making a trip to Oz worth watching. This isn't cluttered with the various personalities or creatures that make up Oz and its surrounding lands. This is a fantastic depiction of a character we're all too familiar with from our travels with Dorothy throughout our lifetimes, and really... isn't that all an Oz movie needs right now to let us know we're not in Kansas anymore moving forward? This looks like Rachel Weisz's full transformation to the Wicked Witch of the West, but, from what I've been hearing, this may just be A Wicked Witch of the West that we encounter during OZ, not necessarily THE Wicked Witch of the West.

It's hard to jack-off with Margaret Hamilton's face there.

Reason #10: Because when she leaves pubes on the soap bar, everyone knows immediately who it came from.
-
Her face looks like Rachel Weisz or Mila Kunis, its hard to tell who. But the cleavage really makes it clear: Rachel Weisz is packing some tig ol b's, Mila Kunis is not. If that was Rachel Weisz there would be a whole lot more green cleavage.

The nipples are the best part!

Or do you just wear a Mickey Mouse cap during the movie?

I just keep hoping that someone will go back to the original books...
by Gremlin517
and make a series that is a faithful, art deco/art nouveau translation into the books that were created by L. Frank Baum--basically until that series comes into being and it will--it's just basically a matter of time. I am essentially ignoring all the other versions as they come out. They are all nice little revisionary tales, and each one has much to recommend it--but ultimately they are all lacking any of the creativity, originality and just pure astounding love that the original books had. One day someone will see that the series of OZ books are a perfect way to experiment with a period that has not been seen much in film--it would also be a perfect way to engage and play with the work of artists like Alphonse Mucha, Klimt, Maxfield Parrish and of course Jno. R. Neill. It seems odd to me that no one has done this, because it would be a series they could milk for years and which has never been attempted (well, not since the silent era, anyway) The first movie/book could be handled in retrospect and I believe that something like this could be an amazingly epic series. But, at least until then we get these interesting little retellings that, while they may have the lasting effect of "Snakes on a Plane," usually have enough special effects to make up for any lack of originality. Still, I'm holding out for a series that is faithful to the books...and in the right hands wouldn't have the limitation of being written by either religious nuts or anti-religious nuts. Gremlin

I don't really understand how Disney is able to keep sampling iconography from the '39 movie.
by Still_A_Lostie
Wouldn't they need permission from MGM? And wouldn't MGM either refuse or charge through the roof? Yes the book is public domain, but the original movie is still under copyright. The blackandwhite-fade-to-color, the greeness of the witch, the emphasis of the witch-as-antagonist-as-climax-of-story are all from that movie. Is there some deal with MGM we don't know about?

That's all the poster reminds me of

...how could one not be at least semi-excited? Spider-man 3? If that is your worst movie (it is Raimi's worst, I haven't seen crime wave though, heard people who saw it on a plane and still walked out), then you are a hell of a director (Raimi is). Also, suck it English majors who have a problem with run on sentences, overuse of parenthesis, and otherwise poor grammar!

Todd did a Dark OZ toyline back years ago. He also wrote a movie script about the characters as well, which he said studio suits went head over hills for. Looks like they stole his idea and ran with it.

Some of you people on here need to get laid if you think a dark poster of a woman with prosthetics on her face is hot. You're either 12 or seriously frustrated virgins.
-
Spot on! John R Neill's work seems to be almost ignored by successive OZ interpretations. So perfectly placed in time. Like the recent Burton 'Alice', the essential themes and visuals are completely ignored in favour of the film maker thinking 'what Baum/Carroll meant to do here was'... But hey, as long as the tits are big, it seems no-one really cares eh...

I remember that toy line. It was very much an EXTREMELY DARK toyline. This looks like a fun, albeit a big sexed up, return to Oz, full of bright colors and cute fantasy creatures. Not a rip off at all.

That's colder than a witch's...yeah. (Suddenly, I'm getting this strong feeling that Raimi is following in John Carpenter's footsteps by proving that his best years are far behind him.)
by AlienFanatic
Sexing up the Wicked Witch is so, so out of step with the Oz we all grew up with. Hey, maybe it is true to the book, but in this day and age how many kids have read the book vs. how many have seen the original MGM film. As a parent, I'm not sure I'd embrace Raimi's sexed-up, rainbow CG vomit version.

The make-up artist who is a professional would insist on full nude application...
by Darth Macchio
I mean seriously. How else can you keep the precise shade and tone of green on her face and hands consistent? Holding your hand near your face might work but it's nothing compared to applying the makeup to the face, neck, shoulders, arms, and then hands...in order. If I was a make-up artist, I'd insist on applying this makeup with the actress fully in the nude (or at least topless with a t-back/g-string). It's not about nakedness or coping a feel. It's about being a professional. Ahem. And my mother told me to be a doctor. Curses!

Oh except all those movies that were made in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, that were not just made about Art Deco in retrospect but actually feature Art Deco while it was a movement. That is three whole decades of Art Deco cinema for you to watch!

95% of the time I agree with Kidd, but where are you getting the Burton's Alice vibe from?
by Kremzeek
Nothing I've seen from Oz gives me any kind of Burton vibe. Even after you've pointed it out, I still don't see it ... like, at all. Burton's Alice was a big fugly bunch of colours thrown up on the screen. It looked like Raggedy-Ann and Andy got torn apart and then all their leftover tidbits got used to make the costumes. Plus, the movie was empty and really, really forgettable (I saw it and don't remember a damn thing except that I didn't like it). I'm having a really difficult time seeing how you're getting that impression with Oz. It looks awesome! (And at this point in the Alice PR, I was already thinking it looked shitty.) To each their own, of course, but I think you're very wrong this time around.
