You've Seen the PACIFIC RIM trailer, now watch the BNAT14 Q&A with Guillermo Del Toro!!!
Hey folks, Harry here... This is the first year that I've allowed taping of the Q&A's from BUTT-NUMB-A-THON. One of the things you need to know is what GENRE of film this movie is. Guillermo describes that he's setting out to make a goddamn Alexander Korda movie. Now, when one says that, they're not just talking about the films Korda directed... but the ones he produced as well. In fact the entire mention of ALEXANDER KORDA is a very telling truth about Guillermo Del Toro. He wants to help and be responsible for films he loves, be that as director or producer. And Korda was that way too. Take a look at Korda's production of THE FOUR FEATHERS, or his directed telling of THE THIEF OF BAGDAD. Guillermo is starting to strut. This is the very first time he's making the exact film he's always wanted to make with out having a single excuse. Be that over-bearing executive partners on a film here or there. Folks fighting over Budgets. Guillermo has gotten to make exactly the film he wants to - Like Edgar Rice Burroughs' PRINCESS OF MARS, this film is a romance. The film whose SOUL I would say this film is aiming for is something like THE ABYSS. We're in that future. ALIENS... And as for the action, these are not big shots. He's having a real good time on this one. He knows he's made a film that is going to just blow people away. It was a blast to see Guillermo like that at Butt-Numb-A-Thon.

"Like Edgar Rice Burroughs' PRINCESS OF MARS, this film is a romance." Nice job comparing it to the book and not the film of the book that bombed.

Seems like a big budget *going through the motions* for GDT, resulting in a generic CLASH OF THE TITANS/BATTLE:LA look to the trailer.
by justmyluck
The screenwriter wrote the CLASH remake, so my first impression wasn't far off. Tapping, or even teasing, the EVANGELION fanbase would not have been a bad idea.

Really excited for this movie!

Is 2013 going to be the greatest year at the movies for geeks in the last 30 years?
by AntonStark
There are so many fucking great looking movies coming out!
-
That's funny my strange film and writing teacher has film print that was fine for a 200 seat college auditorium
-
I think the Godzilla remake may be the Kaiju film to look forward too. Also this is a romance??! Seriously? A fucking romance? The only romance I want to see in this is a giant robot ass fucking a giant monster after boxing with it over half a continent.

It's a crime the producers on Blade didn't get him back for Trinity. At least we could've had a good movie instead of the pile of crap we got.
-
giant monster movie. giant monsters are cool.
-
wait for this movie! Especially 'cuz Del Toro is an old school man with internally created way of life that aims for souls of film like THE ABYSS in that future we're in. ALIENS...!

This movie looks like good fun, but I can't stand the hypocrisy of this site.
by loafroaster
Even if this movie turns out to be a bag of shite, Harry will still fawn over it and give it a glowing review, because it's made by his pal Guillermo. Same thing happens with Empire Magazine with their good friends Edgar Wright and Peter Jackson.Whatever happened to good old fashioned unbiased reviews?

if Pacific Rim doesn't live up to expectations then it might be the end of Del Toro
by Titus05
before he turns into another M. Night Shyamalan...seems like Del Toro has always been on the cusp of greatness but never fully got to that level...even Pan's Labyrinth was not a commercial success but more of a critical one...he needs to make a huge commercial release which will elevate him to another level...being known as a 'visionary' can only last for so long
-
did him no favors.
-
Dont Be Afarid of the Dark was big letdown for me. Looked great, but not scary at all. Also, GDT may want to watch all these movies he wants to attach his name to. If they all turn to shit people will equate them with him, even if he just produces them. That being said, Pacific Rim looks like it can be good.

Comparisons to Transformers are somewhat inevitable but very wrong
by Steve Lamarre
Even just as far as scale goes, watch in the trailer the fighter jets compared to the monster. Those are like little Starscreams exploding like tiny Pop Pop Snappers you played with as a kid.

I think this movie is really more like The Outlaw Josey Wales.
-
not a huge fan of Godzilla nor king kong. liked clover field and mighty joe young, but they had some semblance of a story behind them. The first transformers movie, it actually was forced to have some sort of story as an origin story. The rest have been well just bland. this looks like movie making painting by numbers. but its actually making the effort to position for itself as the summer blockbuster of old. Idris for me isnt pulling off pullmans independence day speech.
-
But we can't blame Hollywood. It's their job to create buzz and get butts in seats. The problem is a particular target audience who accepts these things blindly on Hollywood's terms, not their our descriminating tastes, and then castes a win/fail judgement before chasing the next dragon. Hope may spring eternal, but so does lowered standards.
-
There's no such thing as an UNbiased review. That's the whole point: to give another person's perspective on a movie, so you can better influence your own decisions. For example, take this site's two most prominent reviewers: Harry and The Kidd. One's a blithering fanboy who's sorta like Pac-Man, chomping up and loving anything in site, with no regard to the English language whatsoever. The Kidd, on the other hand, is a reviewer with clear and precise language, who seems (or seemed, as it were) to hate any movie that comes out. Is either opinion right? No, of course not, it's an opinion. What they do accomplish is providing a movie experience that's deeper than if you hadn't read a review. This is all mindless babbling by the way. I'm looking forward to Pacific Rim.
-
@lambcamera there bias and there's complete fucking bias. If stallone or tarantino came out with a turd, you can be sure it's polished right here.

by FlickaPoo
I realize the planet might be doomed and this is your darkest hour, but you got your shit and resources together enough to build a couple giant robots...don't cheap out! Spring the extra $ and take an extra day to put some awesome fucking Grendizer/Mazzinger horns on him! Once again, people of Earth...what the fuck? This could be the end, show a little self respect!

The FX look cool, but the movie is Independence Day with bigger aliens. The market is over-saturated with alien invasion movies. It'd be cool for once if someone tried a different take on this tired, tired format.

Seriously. the only one i recall in recent times is Jurassic park. Did Spielberg lock up the dino sfx team or what? i'm not talking about Godzilla either nor land of the lost or king kong shit. I'm talking a honest to goodness dinosaur movie with a story thats not all sfx moneyshots. Where's my Turok?

I hate saying this, but Transformers, and Battleshits are going to be in people's mind upon seeing this preview.
by Michael_Jacksons_Ghost
I look forward to the film, but non-geeks are going to see this as a Power Rangers type flick, and pass on seeing it. If the film becomes a blockbuster, which I hope it does, maybe there will be hope for a Voltron flick.

FACT !
-
Objectivity is to film and art in general what unicorns are to horsebreeding. Storytelling, especially storytelling through an optical lense, is an exercise in the storyteller conveying an experience to the audience member, which they then reconstruct. A critic may pretend to be objective, may pretend to only see what's actually there, but in reality, nothing's actually there, and the whole thing is an exercise in personal interpretation. I mean, I once read a critic who panned the Truman Show because of the absurdity of building a soundstage that covered most of Burbank. Maybe to him that was being objective, but the reality is the whole concept was absurd from start to finish, and that was the point! It's the experience that matters. If I read critics, it's to guess what my experience might be relative to that.

I lived in Los Angeles in the 70s as a young lordling, and besides being blessed with the "Z Channel" teaching me about film there was also Channel 22, all Japanese television all the time, no subtitles. There were about as many piloted Japanese Robot shows as there are superheroes in the states, each with a toyline unlike anything in America, things were made of METAL! So I drank the kool-aid is what I am saying
-
Yeah Mr.X, totally what I mean. Of course there's no such thing as an unbiased review. I meant how Harry's (and other's) personal connection to whoever made a movie completely overtakes their review of it. You can guaran-fuckin-tee whether or not Pacific Rim is a masterpiece or a complete abomination, Harry's gonna recommend it, defending it just because Del Toro gives him pwesents. It makes me sick; this site is becoming more a place for Harry's mates to pimp their wares, and less a place where you visited for someone's honest opinion.

As a self-proclaimed AICN Super User I felt obligated to watch the trailer..
by Mel Garga
This seems like a big-budget answer to Robot Jox from th 80s. However, I realize my opinion doesn't count for much since I'm sitting at home unemployed and watching the Dudley Moore classic 'Santa Claus: The Movie' on Netflix. Also, my dog is wheezing like crazy probably as a result of the spicy leftovers I just dumped in her bowl.

by Mel Garga
And holy shit, Burgess Meredith is in this sucker too. So I guess he made this and Rocky V towards the end of his life? That combo comes dangerously close to tarnishing an otherwise solid film legacy.

I love Giant robot movies, shit I still have un-subtitled VHS imports
by Mace Tofu
of Giant Robot shows from Japan. But based on this trailer I do not see any NEW ideas, only retreads of other Robot flicks. Thanks to CGI we see crazy Monsters in every fantasy film out, Conan, Clash, Wrath, Sharktopus, Platysauros Rex... None of the monsters stood out as interesting in this trailer. And if they try to shoe-horn in a romance even that will not be as interesting as a lead hero jacking off on the sleeping object of his affection. Even a silly movie like Big Man Japan has more interesting monsters and attacks than this trailer. With this being Del Toro's Big "1941" or "Heaven's Gate" "I'm making my dream movie and no one to tell me no you can't do that" event pic he will have no one to blame on this flick but himself if it stinks.

@crow3711 :) Half the fun of AICN is making fun of Harry's stories
by AlienFanatic
..and he damn well knows it. I think 90% of his articles are written unintentionally, with 10% awareness that what he's writing makes no sense. I really do wish Harry would drop the obsessive, sexual way that he approaches it not because it's necessarily offensive, but that it tends to sidetrack otherwise enjoyable discussions. But that's Harry, and we who read this site accept it. (Well, I don't actually READ Harry's reviews often--I value my sanity--but I get endless enjoyment from the TB's that follow.) But watching this video, it's clear he loves what he does, absolutely ADORES that he has a friend like Del Toro, and that's a helluvalot better to me than a staff full of cynical journalists who are more focused on turning a great phrase than celebrating the emotional heart that powers the filmgoing experience. Oh dear, I got all misty-eyed typing that. Now I have to tell a fart joke or something.

I can't believe the cynicism over the FIRST teaser trailer
by AlienFanatic
I mean, what are people hoping for? We get glimpses of the movie in a trailer that's designed to the average Independence Day movie goer. All this rah-rah "Armageddon is canceled" stuff is easily digested by the tweenagers and twentysomethings for whom Kaiju sounds like a sneeze and for home Godzilla is "That stupid movie with Ferris Bueller." This is, imo, a great way to introduce the Giant Mecha/Monster genre to a generation who hasn't grown seen most of the TOHO films and thought Cloverfield is the best they can do.
