Giant Robots And Giant Monsters Get To Rumblin' In The First PACIFIC RIM Trailer!
Beaks here...
If you've ever wanted to see a big-budget kaiju flick made by people who genuinely love the genre and, you know, movies, allow me to introduce you to PACIFIC RIM.
Thank you, Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham, for making the movie the eight-year-old me used to crudely enact with my Godzilla and Shogun Warriors toys. Amazingly, I'm told that this is just a sliver of the world del Toro has created. There's much more to come. We just have to wait until July 11, 2013 to see it. No sweat, right?

The first person who says, "This reminds me of RobotJox" gets punched in the fucking maw. I came and came hard over this one. There is such a low degree of difficulty to stick this landing, and frankly, I think this is the movie our loveless penises have all been waiting for. Remember when Knowles fellated Blade II? It's time for us all to step up to the plate and get to fuckin slurping.

Without a compelling story, this is just Godzilla 98 all over again. lets hope it has one. I see no hint of it in this trailer.

On paper, this sounds like a great idea. The robot designs are lackluster, and they look rather cartoonish (yeah, it's still early) and non-existent (like most 100% CGI creations). I also don't like the synchronized piloting. It made sense in that one Evangelion episode, since the Eva pilots were fighting dual Angels. Having 2 synchronized pilots here just doesn't make any sense.

I hope the monster mashes are gory. looks alright. They didn't show much, but I'm still optimistic.

I'd have like a whole Starfleet crew at the helm, and then gun and missile pods at different points of the mech's body. Example: nipple gun turrets or something crazy like that. Sort of like a B17 Flying Fortress but in mecha form.
-
a million times in Japanese cinema or anime. Clearly that's what Del Toro was going for and this is the big budget, American version of those stories. Looks like fun but nothing to get too excited about as we've already been there done that.
-
Do not let this venture into Transformers territory. Been there. Hated that!!
-
...has taken it upon himself to break down a movie he hasn't even fucking seen yet. Good job, ash. How do you know what makes sense and doesn't make sense, fucko? COME ON.

Pacific Rim looks cool, and fun, but you're right in that it isn't looking like the game changer it seems to have been hyped to be. No matter, it looks fun and I like seeing kaiju and mechs duke it out, even in the crappy low budget flicks as they have a particular charm to them. I wonder if Pacific Rim is all CGI, or if Del Toro who is known to be a fan of practical effects, used some man in suit or miniatures for this?
-
This old bastard think this look inspiring and kick ass!!

creepythinmanlives -- I kinda dig the cheesy over-the-top feel if this
by lv_426
I think that is possibly intentional on Del Toro's part. He could very well be trying to keep some of the low budget gonzo charm of all the wacky kaiju flicks from Japan that have been exported since Godzilla first appeared.
-
Not the type of movie I'd spend hours upon hours discussing on a messageboard, but I'd check it out on a matinee, perhaps at a discount theater, but still.

The video is not working for me. Do the Mechs actually transform? They do have pilots, right? So how are they Transformers? Do they have Flames on their Bat-Nipples?
-
I'll admit that. But I can think of a better cure for sea monster infestation. Instead of inventing trillion-dollar killer robots, why not just use a few of the 100,000 or so nukes we humanity have stashed here and there? Oh, also, inb4 "it's a lion"

Why does every handheld shot look like it was photographed by someone with palsy? Watch "Norma Rae." Mostly shot handheld. The camera doesn't twitch and spasm. Watch "Jaws." Mostly handheld. The camera is pretty still even though there's a giant man-eating monster lurking under the boat. The list goes on. The answer to the question, however, remains a mystery, unless "Pacific Rim" was infected with "Cloverfield" disease in post production.

Every big hollywood movie trailer copies this effect. I mean ENOUGH already! To the marketing people ( I know you're reading): It's not cool or effective anymore. Maybe if you're 14... Thank god The Man of Steel trailer held it's chin up high above this crap.

Remember del Toro quite recently said that he wanted the virtual cameras to be placed as realistically as possible?
by aphextwin
..to give the whole movie a more realistic approach, in terms of the visuals (?) Well..there is none of that! The 'cam' is flying allover the place! impossible heights and angles. That dude with the glasses is annoying as fuck and we see only a few glipses of him...I fear.. "let's catch some fish" *shivers* But..I remain optimistic, although I have overhyped myself...but that should be my problem isn't it? Damn..that trailer could have gotten a better treatment...with better fitting music...IMO!

-
Quicktime. Big surprise. Guess I'll wait for YouTube. Fuck you Apple.. fix this shit.
-
as someone who was really looking forward to this one as a big GDT fan...this was underwhelming to say the least. The voice over sounded like something out of a bad FMV game, and the "canceling the apocalypse" line made me gag on the cheese. This just doesn't look good...and I'm convinced had it been a Michael Bay movie rather an a GDT movie and this trailer was EXACTLY the same the majority of those on this board who like what they see...would be ripping it a new asshole.
-
...on these boards complain when a trailer shows too much. Then they complain that the trailer didn't show 'enough story'. Are you fucking kidding me?! That was exactly what a FIRST trailer should be. A peek into the general idea of the film and enough action to create interest. The next trailer will likely show more character-ish stuff and a couple more monsters.
-
It's nice to hear Cap'n Janek use his 'real' voice.

What, just because it has big robots you automatically think Transformers? Unlike Transformers, there's a clear sense of design here, and I can tell WTF is going on.
-
I love the monster action, but not a fan of the robots. For fuck's sake, how hard is it to come up with an interesting/original design? And someone else mentioned it already, but the Man of Steel trailer was like a breath of fresh air after all this BWAHHHH nonsense. Fucking retire it already.

-
First of all...Godzilla - the REAL Godzilla, not the 98 abomination - would completel annihilate the Transformers just by looking in their direcction (the 280 foot height difference aside, even). Second of all....think Evangelion, not Godzilla, as the inspiration here.
-
So instead of a live action version of Evangelion...I guess this is the next best thing? Giant Robots to fight a threat that is actually coming from within our own world (Angels). Looks cool, though, but still...I think I would have preferred an attempt at a live-action Evangelion.

I'm looking forward to this movie, and I'll surely be seeing it, but this teaser is kind of a mess. The tone seems...off; and the opening narration is painfully flat, and unnecessary. But I hope it's good, if for no other reason than I'd love for Idris Elba to be in a GOOD movie for once, since he's awesome.
-
monster looks like Dazerb from guyver btw.
-
WTF? really, if it's an in-joke then OK but you could hum the theme song to Robot Jox over this trailer and it fits too well. Also didn't hate Robot Jox so I'll check this out but so far this just looks like a bloated version with CGI monsters. I hope it would be more interesting but guess not.
-
I enjoyed a lot of that. I did not enjoy hearing GLaDOS. That took me so out of the moment it's not even funny. Looks like a fun movie, but I am not nearly as jazzed as others seem to be. Maybe if I watch it on a bigger screen than my iPhone? I dunno. Seems fun for sure, but GLaDOS kinda ruins it for me.

what ever happened to the days of actually watching a movie before making up your mind on the quality of said film? Bitch Bitch Bitch Bitch.... that is all I see about every trailer that comes out. Nothing ever pleases some people, they watch a 90 second snippet of a movies, and can instantly decide that the entire movie is going to suck without any sort of context for what they have seen. The man of steel, Pacific rim, Oblivion, and After earth may turn out to be complete pieces of shit, but there is also a chance that they might actually be good, why not be a little optimistic. And if the trailer turns you off so much, then just don't watch it, but enough with the detailed criticisms of movies you haven't watched.

... and yet it's the one that gets made. I'd trade this for At The Mountains of Madness or Haunted Mansion in a heartbeat. And another thing: Giant robots are cool and all, but when you see them in a live-action setting instead of a cartoon, it really reinforces how ridiculous they are.

way tooo much robots. we have akready been Transfomered to death
by Jack Desmondi
And the guys in the big robots has already been done well by Stuart Gordon about 20 years ago. The only thing that MAY be original are the monsters and you barely see them in in trailer. And what the tuck is it with directors now shooting all their action pieces at night or in rain when you cant get a feel for the scope of the fight? God this looks like generic action crape. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE DIRECTOR OF PAN'S LABARYNTH?
-
Dec. 12, 2012, 8:52 p.m. CST
This looks awesome. And why is the dialogue a bit cheesy? Because it's a cheesy concept. Awesomely cheesy.
by FuckinAmateurMan
You want these guys quoting MacBeth while they're beating holy shit out of 300 foot sea monsters with 300 foot robots? Get the fuck right outta town.
-
Agree with lordofflight. Why does Hollywood dialogue always have to be dumbed down for the masses? Like why does the obvious hero always have to say something like, "Let's go fishing." before heading into battle? Existential questions to throw out there to maybe positively influence the world somehow to stop making crapola. Honestly, I grew up watching and loving monster movies. I saw Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla in the theater in the 70s My favorite movie when I was a kid was War of the Gargantuas, watched it on a black and white TV. I was excited and curious about this project, and some of it does look cool but it's a letdown for me. But then again, maybe I've lost that sense of wonderment and some eight year old kid now will be totally inspired by this. It's just a shame they will never know the magic of Godzilla, main in suit style. What's up with Portal in this movie? Is there a Valve connection? btw don't listen to me, my wife thinks I am insane.

...the famous voice of actress and singer Ellen McLain out from Valve's Portal 1 and 2 how the hell somebody on this page is not knowing this... ridiculous specially after GDT said wide spread on the web over all movie and gamingsites this.... "I'm a big fan of Valve," del Toro said, adding "Portal and Left 4 Dead have been instrumental family experiences at my house." When Del Toro made the call to Gabe Newell, del Toro used his daughter's influence to seal the deal. "Like a complete geek," according to Del Toro, she - he didn't specify which of his two children it was - let her love for Valve shine through, and helped clinch it. "My family was instrumental," del Toro beamed. ....and the japanese actress is JUST one of the main actors, mentioned in any frak'in plot synopsis on every more frak'in moviewebsite LEARN TO GOOGLE

by wcolbert
We will not tire. We will not faulter. We will not fail. Peace will prevail.
-
yes it is glados
-
if you heard a good deal of historical real life quotes uttered in a movie, e.g. the MLK "I have a dream" speech, you'd call it cheesy if you'd never heard of MLK. For fuck's sake the Bush quote I used above even RHYMES.How's that for cheesy. The dialogue is NO cheesier than half the shit bush said in office.
-
Let's appeal to the lowest common demoninator in rural America, the average Joe and the girl next door, so we can make lots and lots of $$! They make the dialogue like real leaders because that's the kind of bs we are used to hearing and are supposed to be inspired by. Why is that inspiring? Another note, the shot of the brain in the computer screen is very reminiscent of the Avatar. OK, a positive, nice opening shot.
-
...there seems to be a fairly large positive majority. Nice change of pace. The are a few of the usual deep-throaters whining about this and that, but they are of no significance.

I'm not normally a fan of Godzilla-type movies, but I liked that trailer. The fact it's an original Del Toro idea (though I know we can see his influences), the fact Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba are starring in it, and the fact there's an orginal, and hopefully compelling, backstory definitely makes me want to see it. I can't even imagine how crazy the large-scale battle sequences will be. Man... Right on, Guillermo!

Who decides who has significance? Are all the reviewers' on this site of no significance? They were unknown once too, yet now they are influential. There's a serious gang mentality on these talkbacks, a simplistic positive-versus negative-2001-warring-ape style. I find it fun to be able to pick apart entertainment that large corporations expect us to guzzle down like sugar.

I don't see an emotional attachment to these robots like I felt in Real Steel...
by tickled_by_elmo
I think the screen time will be too divided between trying to squeeze in as much mech warrior time and then flashing to the human counterparts to really make an emotional connection. Ultimately this looks more like two different styles of toys battling it out than a decent movie. This will be a popcorn movie that I think anyone will enjoy, but I believe GDT has more in him than a Saturday matinee popcorn flick... It just seems that he pussied out on making something worthwhile and truly visionary as opposed to something that if flops, can be easily assumed away as just trying to make a "cool" project for the sake of making it... So far I am still NOT impressed by GDT and have always wondered why I feel alone in this. I am sure as hell glad he stepped away from The Hobbit and every other project he has been attached to and then gone back on or put on the backburner which brings me to another point, why the hell does he become attached and then unattached to so many damn movies? Impulsive much?
-
GDT seems like a pretty awesome guy with lots of passion and talent... Unfortunately he can't really direct English speaking films.
-
Watch the Season 4 episode of Samurai Jack entitled, "Robo-Samurai versus Mondo Bot", fucking amazing, and dare I be so bold to suspect Mr. Del Toro has seen this episode as well
-
Can't put my finger on it right now, though I can say I *did* watch it on my iPhone in my car while I waited on someone. The voiceover didn't do much for me. Anytime I hear someone in voiceover say something like "It was a portal to another dimension..." I just think of something like the opening narration to SUPER MARIO BROS. In other words, that part felt cheesy. Did we need to hear that in a trailer? Could we not just get giant monsters appearing? We really needed to say something like "portals to other dimensions"? Ah well. The robot stuff didn't do it for me. But the monsters- THAT shit was great. That's where the strength of this trailer lies, in the monsters.
-
This looks more serious (or at least played straighter) than 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation,' but FAR less serious than 'Man of Steel.' It's got EVAs...er, giant robots fighting extradimensional sea monsters. It's got Idris Elba rocking some crazy-ass accent (Australian?). And it's got GLaDOS. I'm failing to see any sort of problem with this, unless the execution completely fails in and of itself.

You're talking about a movie based on impractical giant humanoid mechs fighting monsters...and you complain about cheesy
by wcolbert
Perspective, people. The very premise is insanely stupid and cheesy if you give it a moment's thought from the pragmatic standpoint. In what way would a giant humanoid mech EVER be the PRACTICAL, realistic response to a threat? Why humanoid? Why bipedal? It's the least stable configuration you could have, other than hopping about on one leg. Why not just develop more powerful missiles and bombs and planes, which is what the REAL WORLD response would be? Cheesy, you say? Peh. Try watching BATTLESHIT and then call that cheesy. Bill Pullman's speech in Independence Day was beyond cheesy - but people loved that movie. Hell some of the most quoted movie lines of all time are beyond cheesy. Die Hard 1 is beloved by many - but did you HEAR that dialogue? Fuck. And again...if you actually listen to half the shit our own politicians say ... it is pretty much exactly as cheesy.

We all know that this is the warmup to the main event. Well ok for me it is. Some animeheads may be more into giant robots. Wait. Godzilla had Mechagodzilla. Strike that. I realllllllllly hope Garreth Edwards shocks and awes us all with Godzilla - MONSTERS was...OK. For a low budget flick by a director with 0 experience. But to give him such a big project as GODZILLA? One has to wonder why they have so much faith in him given how much is riding on this after the 1998 atrocity and how it was recieved. The KING of the monsters has to be reinstated as just that - the KING OF ALL MONSTERS. None of this cloverfield JarJar Abrams crap. That thing was ok, even though I HATE found footage type films...but the monster itself was just...so very abrams. I swear the monsters in his projects always look like that - even in SUPER 8, the alien reminds me so much of the cloverfield monster. And the image of that creature just isn't ICONIC. Godzilla's outline alone is iconic - hell, his ROAR is iconic -it's enough to give you goosebumps - all a teaser has to do is play that roar over a destroyed city as a backdrop and I guarantee you millions of people will be geeking out and getting the chills all at once.
-
By the way, Media Messiah....where will you be on Dec.21, 2012?

Although, his excessive activity in political TB's was annoying. And he had no integrity whatsoever. He started out as a bleating liberal pretending to be a bleeding heart when it was clear he didn't give a shit about anyone but him and his ilk, and then he became an independent...and eventually he became a hardcore right-winger talking about how his wife is a teacher in the ghetto. I have to agree with a few others here. Not yet doing a lot for me. Don't get me wrong, i've been wanting to make a giant robots vs monsters film since i was a kid. At least one is being made. However, i thus far have not enjoyed Del Toro's work...though some design work in the Hellboy films were good. The robot designs are weak and disappointing...one of them has a bucket for a head for God's sake. I want to love it, but i can't help but channel a Battleship vibe...and that doesn't help the situation at all. Fingers crossed it is so much more, so SOOOOO much more than Battleship.
-
Media Messiah WILL be at your birthday party. He'll be standing outside your window waiting for the right moment to jimmy the front door lock, come into your house, and hide in your bedroom closet. Then when you're asleep, he'll watch you sleep for a few hours before loudly saying, "VADER! THANK YOU, VADER!"
-
Though I guess I said it second time, and we all know it takes 3 chants to bring you back ala Beetlejuice.

On 12/21/12...I'll be in the same boat as everyone else, either facing the end of the world, or...just another day. But I'll tell you, whenever a person dies, be it today, tomorrow, or on the 21st--well, it is the end of the world, at least for them--so considering that, we all have to face that end some day. No need to panic though, if you are good with God, then you have the ultimate golden parachute package, no matter who you are--there is no real end, just another beginning. Happy Holidays...Vision!:)))

Visuals look fantastic. Line delivery is terrible. Big robot in the snow looks like it's aping Trollhunter.
by kevred
That segment with the giant troll in the snow in Trollhunter is one of the best-realized special effects I've ever seen in a film, period. The quick snowy shot we see in this trailer seems to be a tribute to that one. The line delivery in the trailer stinks. The opening exposition is so painfully contrived in its delivery, it sounds ridiculous. As for Elba, like the guy, but it's way too much "I AM ACTING!" That said, the visuals look pretty spectacular, though a lot of that comes from the evocative qualities of the snippets we see here. Apart from the initial water-drop, the robots themselves don't look all that interesting. And the two pilots side by side is a bit silly, really - it's like watching people playing a wii. All that said, this looks very cool, and it's kind of surreal to see a full-on, big-budget, high-tech version of this kind of story. Here's hoping it's a knockout.

PACIFIC RIM is a smart brutal suspense flick... just what I'd hope GUILLERMO DEL TORO would make!
by bloody_shit_on_my_dick
I’ve seen PACIFIC RIM for about a month now. Just cleared the embargo stage so let’s hop right into it. Why should you give two shits about this film? Well, it is based on a series of THE BIBLE by JESUS CHRIST that has huge fans. Stringer Bell is essentially the most badass Military Detective that there ever was. He found problems. That life is in the rearview and now he wanders the earth like Rick from Robotech having adventures. Now, there’s no Eastern philosophy. Pacific Rim is a bit more like fucking Robot Jox… except a whole lot more functional. Rotot Jox’s zero to sixty is almost instantaneous. Pacific Rim has that kind of acceleration of violence, but he has a rather intense personal code. I’m pretty sure he belongs behind bars… but he’s kinda like the whole damn SAMCRO boiled into one very lethal Jax Teller. Jax Teller is probably a bit more talkative than his character in the book, but Del Toro's dialogue for Teller is so choice. In fact if you watch Hunnam's Jax Teller… efficient & precise describe his actions, dialogue and line of thought. Shortest distances. He keeps things explosive, even if they’re barbs of the rocket punch side. You should not be surprised. This film is the forty third feature film directed by Del Toro. The first is an intensely violent crime film called THE WAY OF THE GUN. Del Toro is all kinds of sharp. He writes and directs like a clockwork mechanism. You always can look and marvel at the film as it comes together. It is deliberately clever & I really respond to that in a film like this. PACIFIC RIM is an old school man with internally created way of life. He’s a man like VOLTRON. And that’s a very good film to conjure when talking about this movie. You’re talking ex-LION badass, never able to return home. Living day by day the way he lives. He’s a violent man. He stays off the clock, between the shadows. He uses the FUCKING LION bus system to travel. No ID checks, no tracking. You get the idea… trouble finds him… you also get the idea that people around him get hurt and he moves forward. Always forward. He doesn’t do anything that he can’t live with. Now the bad guys in this are into OCEANIC RIFT corruption, they’re part of the infection feeding on society, but that’s getting ahead of myself. AND FUCK THE REST OF THIS SHIT! This film is called PACIFIC RIM and after you see it, you’ll know the name and what it stands for.

All I could think about during the trailer was that it had a Transformers feel but with a Guyver budget. Is this a foreign film that's being repackaged for the Western market? Elba has about as much charisma as Keanu Reeves. Charlie Hunnam is pretty decent in SoA though. 3/10 on the excitement meter.

Real Steel with mechs vs monsters, and by way of a shit ton of pilfered production design, just doesn't fill me with confidence. DelToro has always been hit and miss for me. For as great a visualist as he undoubtedly is, he's often pretty damn terrible at character and dialogue. And I got that same follow feeling here, watching the trailer. It's got an interestingly eclectic cast, and I'm sure it'll look impressive, but I dunno, it just all felt rather hollow, like it didn't have much of a pulse. Be happy to be proven wrong, but so far, can't say I'm all that excited for it.

An analogous conversation between 2 summer movies summing up my excitement for PACIFIC RIM
by Clavius
Summer Movie #1 - Yo my friend! You looking forward to ruling summer 2013? Summer Movie #2 - Oh hells' yea bro! it's gonna be sweeeeeet! We're gonna make The Avengers look like Ishtar! WOOOooo! (both movies give each other a douchey fist bump when suddenly...) boooom Summer Movie #2 - Dude, you hear that? boom....boom Summer Movie #1 - Yeah, tha hell? (getting closer) BOOM.....BOOOM....BOOOOOMMMMM Summer Movie #1 - Uh...bro? Summer Movie #2 - Yeah man I see it! Holy &^#*! What the $*&! IS THAT THING?!?! PACIFIC RIM (In a voice like unto the gods themselves) - KNEEL BITCHES! KNEEL BEFORE ME AND I MAY SHOW MERCY!! Summer Movie #1 - Yeah man, it's cool! it's cool, we don't want any trouble! (both movies, now humbled at the might of this colossus of awesome fall trembling to their knees) Summer Movie #2 - w'w..what.....what the &$^@ are you.?..uh....my lord?...sir? PACIFIC RIM - ALL OTHER SUMMER MOVIES SHALL BEHOLD MY POWER AND DESPAIR, FOR I AM THE BRINGER OF YOUR DOOOOOOOMMMM! (Pacific Rim raises it's mighty foot which seems to eclipse the sun over the two cowering movies) Summer Movie #2 - But..my leige, you said you would spare us! PACIFIC RIM - I LIEEEEEEED! BWA HAHAHAHAHA!!! HOW DO YOU LIKE ME NOW! (and in a moment that feels like an eternity, both films lives are snuffed out under the mighty, unsympathetic heel of their destroyer) So what I'm saying is we have a movie coming out next Summer, featuring giant mother&$^#-ing monsters fighting giant mother$#&^-ing robots, directed by Guillermo mother&*!-ing Del Toro. My geek wood will just not go away after seeing this trailer! Oh yeah, and Ron mother-^$&ing "Hellboy" Perlman is in it too!

I ususally LOATHE internet-whiners who only seem to find hapiness when complaining and ridicule other people. People who start to bitch and moan about movies 7 months before they're released are annoying to say the least. Having said that.... this looks kinda shaky to me. The robot designs are lackluster and uninspiring (at least the ones we've seen so far) and the dialogue is just plain awful. Seriously, why do we always have to have one of those "today we turn the tide, today we cancel the apocalypse!!!!!!"-moments in movies like this. Why?? Do you americans get off on shit like this. Do you fistpump and give each other high-fives in the movie theatres? Because the rest of the world gags on the cheese. I almost start crying because it's so embarrasing. Also I agree with what some of you have said. GdT is a genius when it comes to visuals and he has grand ideas but he often stumbles in the execution. But only time will tell, maybe this will turn out awesome.

This looks fantastic, what with the fucking GIANT ROBO-PUNCH and the GLaDOS and Kaiju and... Sorry, let my nerd goggles get in the way. This looks pretty damn fucking good.
-
Maybe. But it looks like a good movie to check your brain at the ticket booth and get a 50 gal. barrel of buttered popcorn. I'd like to see it!
-
Okay, so like, I have this movie's plot figured out: 1. At the beginning of the movie, the rift in the Pacific is introduced, and a single Kaiju comes through. 2. It attacks the United States, and the military just barely has enough juice in its military to kill it. (Hence the scene of the Kaiju on the aircraft carrier) 3. There is much celebration, and the Kaiju is taken to an unknown base for study. 4. More Kaiju come through the rift and quickly make minced meat of the remaining military. 5. This sends mankind on the run where they develop the Jaegers after studying the dead Kaiju. 6. The first Jaeger developed is not ready for prime time as it is just a prototype. 7. Other Jaegers are developed and pilots are recruited for them. (Enter Charlie Hunnam) 8. The Jaegers are deployed and meet with initial success. 9. Eventually though they are beaten back by the Kaiju and Charlie Hunnam's robot is destroyed with him being the only survivor. 10. The failure of the Jaegers is because they have pilots, not fighters. Charlie Hunnam realizes this. 11. He finds Rinko Kikuchi, and trains with him. (Hence the fight scene where Charie Hunnam is holding the sword) 12. Together, Charlie and Rinko convince the government of their idea, but are only given the first, experimental Jaeger to use for their idea. 13. They quickly start kicking major ass against the Kaiju, and end up in a battle against the biggest, baddest Kaiju of them all (the one that screams at the end of the trailer). 14. A giant battle ensues as the climax of the movie with Charlie and Rinko barely winning. 15. They even manage to close the rift. 16. The movie ends with the rift opening back up in another part of the world setting up Pacific Rim 2. There, you don't need to see the movie anymore.

I cant say ive had anything more than a passing awareness of this movie - so the trailer was really an initial intro - and i just dont see it. Concept - i like the overall thought of Robots versus Monsters -could possible love it hate the stupid interdimensional portal - such a weak device The Monsters. Seems to be bipolar - torn between CGI goodness and the ability to create some awesomeness and the Homage to men in suits. Frankly big and fast moving are more scary to me than lumbering destruction. The Robots - show me something new The Darkness - we all know this bodes poorly for 3D imagery. We can build 30 story robots, create neural connections - but cant track a 40 story monster to initiate a daytime encounter? And further, why can't use virtual imaging and and feedback to run them? Need buff guys to run them? Id rather have Stephen Hawking's imagination run them - he'd kick their ass and send them back through the interdimensional portal. duh Trailer - i want that image that really makes my cremaster reflex go wild. I really didnt see it here. Make me more intrigued. the Man of Steel did a better job with that. My on the Fence vote so far is a negative - hope trailer 2 changes that!

It just won't. The first weekend will be the best. Followed by a very sharp decline. Asia, on the other hand will eat this shit up. Especially China and Japan. Personally I hope this is like Big O in two respects. First: That show had great action. The megadeus was a walking arsenal. I hope the jagers have that too, cause this movie will have at least 3 major monster fights and if they are all just fisticuffs then I would consider that a wasted opportunity. Second: While I admit Big O has the classic WTF Anime ending. It is nevertheless a great ride to the finish. I don't see that in this movie outside of the action scenes. Beyond what I posted last time about this movie pulling "a goose" is further cemented by the fighting scene with the asian chick and the main character. Sets up some great sexual tension. But it doesn't help the story. And that's what worries me. People may rip on Robot Jox, but it had a story.

-
A lot of the plot and humor in the second is derived from the first.
-
Looks pretty good but we all know even a pretty face needs a great personality. Well, there are exceptions to that rule..
-
then it was worth being a middling effort by Scott. Why GDT thinks Prometheus' themes are so vastly similar to ATMOM as to make it obsolete is another question.
-
In a few shots the backgrounds look like Sky Captain. But I don't mind, still dying to watch this movie. It's going to kick major ass.
-
You could cut in FX shots from that old film and they would fit right in this trailer. I still don't understand why it would be more cost effective to spend trillions of dollars and many years to design and build working robots that big to fight monsters attacking the earth when C-130's with lasers could be used today to fight them from the air. A bunker buster shot right down the throat should do the job but I guess it is more fun to built a giant rocket powered hand to punch a monster in the face. This will not be a good date movie IMHO

Unfortunately, one of the great things about Portal was discovering that it had a plot
by bah
At first, it just seemed like they made a fun little physics puzzle game on the Half Life engine. You would only gradually realize that there is more going on. It was like if after five hours of Tetris, it suddenly turned into a platformer where you're fighting whatever is throwing the blocks at you. Some people actually didn't finish it and were disappointed because at one point, the game breaks its own model so completely, they thought the game was over. That's not to say that knowing there's a plot ruins it. It's still every kind of great. And for all that, Portal 2 lives up to the original.

Do we really need a subplot about "female" robot jox? Or training scenes? Rocket PUNCH! This is the first BIG BUDGET Giant Robot movie and they are going to rehash gags from Robot Jox. Really? Maybe I've watched Robot Jox too much to be objective : ) Would rather see Shin Getter Robo's in Live action, never thought of Robot Jox watching that show.

I'm quite satisfied with getting this before we get GDTs 'At the Mountains of Madness'. I don't think I could be more psyched for this and I haven't even seen the trailer linked above yet. I truly hope this movies makes a mint, 9 figures range kind of mint - in the states and overseas (and it easily could genre-wise). I hope it unequivocally proves that GDT can bring the coin to the studios so much that they give him Ridley Scott leeway to make AtMoM a rated R film with the necessary budget to tell the story as GDT sees fit. hell, maybe it will inspire michael bay to read a physics book. cannot wait for this. nuff said.

by kevred
No A-list stars. Giant robots and monsters, which is primarily a male magnet. No real sense of romance and only a tepid nod in the direction of female empowerment. That is not the formula for a crossover success in today's world. I think back to John Carter and Dredd. Or even back to the Hellboy films. Those were, per the prevailing opinions, very effective genre films. But they went almost completely ignored by the masses. This looks like a completely effective genre film, but that has such a limited appeal to society at large. What is going to make this one transcend? Will the Asian market go for it? Will any other country? I hope it does spectacularly well. But realistically, what kind of opening weekend do we expect for this?

There are some really nice shots in this trailer, very colorful but not overdone
by lv_426
I love the first shot of the young girl in the empty street as what looks like ash colored snow falls. The part with Rinko Kikuchi in the rain, camera moving in on her as she raises her umbrella. I just like that shot for some reason. The one of her in the black armor and helmet walking in a flurry of snowflakes. The giant mecha in the snow looks great. Somebody mentioned Troll Hunter, and I see what you mean but it doesn't look like a rip-off of Troll Hunter (I love Troll Hunter btw). The shot with blue and purple lighting, where it appears to be Charlie Hunnam's character attending to a wounded mecha pilot. I just overall like the color palette and feel of this. It isn't totally serious, nor is it too overly saturated and cartoonish either. I think it will be a fun flick.

Since when has PACIFIC RIM'S main draw been anything other than basically a big budget GODZILLA vs. BIG ASS MECHS?
by lv_426
I'm kind of shocked that people are so surprised that Pacific Rim looks and sounds like it does in that trailer. Did the Headgeek overhype this one too much? Cause this looks like what I was expecting for the most part. Maybe not as intense as I was initially expecting, but that could change once I'm in the theater and a giant ass kaiju is looming over my puny self as I stuff Junior Mints into my feeble human maw. If anything, I think Pacific Rim will be pretty cool on the big screen, as I've already gotten a better feel for the film from re-watching this trailer in full quality 1080p Quicktime as opposed to the Youtube version on my phone. So extrapolate that to IMAX scale and you'll see what I'm getting at.

We all know he is capable of making films like Pan's Labyrinth, and yet he also chooses to make movies like Hellboy and Pacific Rim. Go go Power rangers!! Really though, this is like what the live action update to the power rangers should be. I don't know why they don't just call this thing Power Rangers X and just get it over with... What the fuck are we waiting for hollywood? We get avatar with alien cat people, yet no thundercats movie? We get a SECOND attempt at a superman movie, this time with testosterone fueled action and less Donner nut sucking, yet no proper take on dragonball z which I guarantee you would completely dominate the box office. DBE was a huge missed opportunity. But give chatwin some beefed up muscles, a real actual good fight scenes and it'll make a billion dollars. Just saying, the whole "let's make a movie that's like an old popular show or comic, yet not call it that" is getting ridiculous...
-
I'll torn on this one. So to be NICE, I'll say this... 1) Yes, there's still a little kid geek in me -- a kid who grew up on cheesy sci fi and monster movies that really didn't have much of a budget... who is old enough to even admit that he grew up on Ray Harryhausen monsters and movies like THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD what not... who can then look at something like this, with its huge budget and uber slick CGI effects and grin. Because there is something fun and doofy about a silly movie where giant robots will slug it out with giant monsters. So, to use a phrase that I know many don't like to hear, this looks like a standard summer popcorn movie -- where you go on a hot day, to get out of the heat, and you just sit there and enjoy your refreshments and turn off your brain for 2 hours of mindless fun. 2) On the other hand, it does look incredibly STUPID too. I mean, come on, the science involved in just making robots that can keep their balance and walk...even at a crawl's pace... is still incredibly complex to manage, but suddenly I'm supposed to believe that we're gonna be building giant fucking walking billion ton robots? And even if this is set in the future, nice to know that Robot Building 101 got so much better...but the planes all look like current jets. And even if the opening trailers shots of the trailer are set in the modern day or "past" of the movie -- as others have noted -- why the fuck would anyone build a giant complex robot to fight monsters VERSUS simply tossing down some fish (ala Godzilla) to lure these monsters to some secluded part of the world...where you could then just nuke the fuckers? I mean -- what the hell? -- a few strategically dropped nukes can't take these creatures out, but a few PUNCHES from a silly oversized tin can does the trick? Seriously, on what planet does THAT logic make any kind of fucking sense? Finally, I guess the reason I'm less than enthused is that PACIFIC RIM is just late to the game. AICN and Harry's love for all things Del Toro made this sound like such an overhyped game changer...when in truth, in the wake of Speilberg and Bay, it now just seems like TRANSFORMERS 4 -- where instead of it being giant robot versus giant robot, you just insert a big creature instead. But it's not like we haven't seen the whole "giant robot" thing done with modern CGI to a spectacular level...where they're walking and tearing through cities and stuff...so, again, this just seems like more of the same of stuff we've already seen. BUT...like I said before, for a hot summer day where you just want to get out of the house -- and at a matinee price -- I'm sure it will make for some fun to see, so long as you totally turn off your brain.
-
...except on a totally superficial, surface level? Del Toro is an inspired, virtuoso filmmaker, as far away from Bay as a director can get. In my opinion, Pan's Labyrinth is the best film of its decade. I will see anything the man makes, from his loftier work in Spanish to his nerd-fests. I will be there on opening night. His films are the exact opposite of cynical; he clearly loves everything he puts up on the screen.
-
As jackofhearts29 said above, we're going to spend trillions of dollars making 300 foot robots to battle giant monsters? A weapons delivery system is a weapons delivery system. So.......a drone or bomber or silo can hit the monster with the exact same weaponry a robot can. The only, THE ONLY thing the robot can do a drone can't is punch. And you're telling me a giant monster is impervious to high tech weaponry but can be hurt by a punch? Fucking retarded. I admit this shit was the tits as a kid when I watched Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, but as an adult you realize just how fucking asinine the concept is. Thankfully this garbage will bomb domestically but unfortunately will do very good box office overseas. But maybe the domestic failure will kill a sequel and Beachem's career.

But I suspect that enough of us old fuckers will make it through to ensure DelToro gets to make Pacific Rim II while the young'uns (whose TB names we've never heard and whose shit-talking reminds many of us of the kinds of things we heard when we drove the Special Ed. bus) continue to get all aflutter when Channing Tatum does hip-thrusts in Magic Mike promo trailers. by AlienFanatic
I mean, my first thought when a big old monster approaches my city is, "Well, shit, let's just drop a 2MT nuke on its ass and let's see what happens!" What do you mean that flattens everything for a radius of 15 miles? Yes, I've seen Terminator 2, fuck off! If we can invent 300ft robots we can invent nukes that don't leave radiation. I can't quite put my finger on it, but something seems off about this. Does it remind anyone else of the crappy Godzilla remake with Broderick? The brilliance of Evangelion wasnt the Robot's vs' Monsters theme. It was using that to frame the aspects regarding human interaction and psychology. This looks incredibly corny. Independence day with robots and monsters. I think this will probably kill any chance for their to be a live action Eva movie anytime in the foreseeable future. Eva deconstructed the genre and reassembled it with much higher order themes. This looks no different than Battleship to me.

Michael Bay missed the entire point of Transformers by not presenting them as characters. In Bayformers, the Cybertronians are dialogue-free CG and nothing more, playing second fiddle to human characters because Bay has no interest or knowledge of the source material. Contrast that with Del Toro. Yes, there's Evangelion, Godzilla, and even GLaDOS in there, but that's because Del Toro knows the genre and knows the various elements of it. That said, I felt the trailer was uninspired, and they could have come up with something more interesting than the Inception booming stuff. They should have shown more of the characters and less monologue.

It's too bad filmmakers don't have the ability to design and bring to life instantly iconic characters and imagery. Star Wars isn't my absolute favorite, but I do remember being a little kid in the 70's and being instantly taken by the appearance of the action figures that preceded the movie, despite how shitty they look in comparison to contemporary kid's toys. Even via the poor sculpting, the strength of the design and characterization came through.
-
Del Toro is a great director and I usually love his work, so I'm going to ignore that this trailer didn't blow me away in the way that I had hoped it would and get those goosebumps going. I guess Transformers/Battleship have kinda taken the impact out of any new giant robotics/vehicular blockbusters. With Del Toro at the helm, I'm hoping for a more compelling story and attention to characterisation over simply trying to pack as much destruction and action into the film as possible. In any case, I'm just happy to see original new franchises appearing instead of cashing in on the names of older established franchises... Between this and "Oblivion", I am cautiously optimistic...
-
The only thing we're missing there is a Big Trak as the command center!!!!! I'm in line right now for this movie!!!! Although, people are looking at me funny for standing in line for a film that comes out in 8 months, and of course they're saying " You fool... dontcha know the world ends next week... looks like a waste of time there, Slappy!" But I just keep laughing and eatin' my Milk Duds 'cause I'm carrying the only Mayan map with the safe zones listed... and this movie theater's one of them! (it's kinda heavy 'cause it's made of stone and all) SO WHO'S LAUGHING NOW, GRANDMA? And as I slam that big stone tablet grannies head, I think to my self "Self, that was kinda dumb. breaking the only Mayan map over old Grannies head... now you have to stay at this movie theater forever... or at least until they run out of Red Vines and Mountain Dew...

-
This could rise above the cliches and become a really good story if one or more of the giant robots go "rogue" and start taking over the planet and ignoring commands after beating down the giant aliens from another dimension. The line "to fight monster we had to build monsters" makes me think that it might be a possibility, no? Then, in Godzilla fashion, one of the Pacific Rim monsters might become sympathetic and end up beating the evil robots and saving mankind from itself. What do you think? Or it could be Khan. :)

I am personally hoping that, if they don't go the empire-is-bad route, there will be a sinister intelligence at work. Building giant robots to fight dumb animals who don't know what they're doing doesn't make me enthused. It'd be like sending Arnold Scwarzenegger to shoot a mentally-handicapped person who had inadvertently hurt some people. Who can root for that? I'm hoping GDT has some nuance up his sleeve on this one.

by ObiBen
Poetry of the Steak. Too much CG, tastes synthetic. The old school Godzilla movies are technically more akin to traditionnal japanese puppetery and theater than to cinema. I would love to see a big budget movie using ultra sophisticated variants of man-in-suit-stomping-on-models techniques with invisible digital compositing and intelligent, realistic CG enhancements. And, above all, a killer script.
-
This looks like it could be something great, but I really hope it's character focused. Otherwise we're just going to end up with "Battle Los Angeles" again. Which really wasn't awful, but just was sort of flat. All of these movies forget that it's the characters that make a disaster story memorable. It doesn't have to be "romance" like Titanic, but it just needs characters with depth. On a technical level, I really hope those "pilots" aren't remote connected like the trailer implies. That is entirely bone headed. This problem was solved 30 years ago in anime. I really would like to see what could have been done with the Big O story line instead of this. Or hell, go the other way and make this not an anime style monster movie and make it a n HP Lovecraft movie instead

It wasn't all that popular, and the individual episodes were extremely formulaic, but the ongoing story and eventual revelation at the end is absolutely worth 1 or 2 movies. A studio could have made Ronnie Rocket, Defective Detective, and two or three smaller Del Toro movies, like Frankenstein or an animated Witches. None of them would have made a huge amount of money, but they would have at least turned a profit.

Or Superman with his Red Undies. I'd rather have a Mazinger Z Movie as not only were many of Nagai/Dynamic Planning's designs are impressive, but a much better concept. Judging from the trailer alone,Rim looks like a generic coated mash up.i.e. unimpressive. We are ALL entitled to our opinion yanno. :P Maybe it will be a hit, but I'm reserving enthusiam until the final product is out.
