Theres a lot of fucking destruction in the 2nd half of that trailer.
by OSAMP1
-
Please, be good...
-
..where's your kiss curl, and what happened to your pants.
-
Yes, I said rad. I'm bringing it back.
-
Sweet Lord Baby Ninja Jesus!!!! Amaze-Ballz!!!!
-
At most this will be the epic Superman we haven't seen in a loooooooong time. At the very least, it won't be "Twilight: Son of Krypton" that we got 6 years ago......
-
That alone had me wanting to see this movie. I think this style of Superman is what is needed if the trailer is any indication. More about how the world reacts to seeing what is more or less a walking god.
-
The bus crash looked mighty realistic, but they didn't show what happened after. if they can ground Supe's abilities in a realistic world, this can be great. Trailer didn't really impress me much, however. The tone seemed overly serious for the subject matter. I'll reserve judgement until I actually see the movie.
-
So who decided it was to look like a Terrence Malick film? I like the look, but was it Snyder's call to go in that direction? Has anyone associated with the movie talked about this?
-

Looks great! I have a lot of faith in Snyder! This is the movie he was born to direct!
by MariusXe
Watchmen was great, 300 was nice, Dawn Of The Dead was great, Sucker Punch was all right in my eyes (story was bad, but visually the movie was cool). Superman, however, written by Nolan... Snyder was born for this!
-
Oh yeah!
-
Yes, derivative, but great.
-
disspointed that it looks like the first half of the movie will be an origin story ..... is that really necessary??? dont we all know this ???
-
Dec. 11, 2012, 11:23 a.m. CST
Am I the only one who has seen this for about a month already?
by Mel Garga
Jsut kidding, I hope this is good.
-
Just want some epic level action & fights!!! The drama looks like it was being laid on thick, but I'm hoping they finally nail it.
-
Not as stirring as the Comic Con trailer, but still looks amazing. Can't wait.
-
fuck that looks good.
-
Amy Adams is almost 10 years older than Henry Cavill, they should've gotten someone in her late 20's, early 30's. Not someone who is pushing 40. Oh well, apart from that it looks pretty good.
-
This guy kinda looks like Tom Hanks. With and without the Castaway beard.
-
Dec. 11, 2012, 11:25 a.m. CST
Hopefully it will have the best Superman fight since Neo and Agent Smith in MATRIX 3

which i liked, regardless of its faults. That trailer was excellent too, mind you.
-
Dec. 11, 2012, 11:26 a.m. CST
Looks good but I could totally see wires. And organic web shooters? Ugh.
by Quake II
I kid, I kid. I like Snyder. Even the pointless and shallow Sucker Punch had some great eye candy. Watchmen was great as was Dawn Of The Dead. This has GOT to be cooler than Superman Returns. Superman catches a plane, sulks for a while, gets his ass handed to him by Lex and his thugs before falling in the ocean with Kryptonite jammed in his side. That was the general synopsis of Superman Returns.
-
he gets the benefit of the doubt
-
I'll be checking it out on release for sure
-
Dec. 11, 2012, 11:27 a.m. CST
Geez....I already saw this movie back in the late 70's, and it had better music, and a better costume.
by yeah i'm a jerk!
This looks lame. Why would Pa Kent tell Clark that maybe he should have let those people die? That's completely out of character. This movie is looking worse and worse with each new trailer.
-
Dec. 11, 2012, 11:27 a.m. CST
Looks great, apart from probably half the movie taken up by ANOTHER FUCKING ORIGIN RE-TELLING.

Is this a Superman story, or some kind of Space Jesus story?
by HaterofCrap
looks like more pretentious guy in costume crap. where's the fun? don't try and tell me these Nolan movies really are heady.
-
Was ready to hate this, but I can dig it. however, that was my exact reaction to the Green Lantern preview.
-
....was hoping to see a much more angry looking Zod.
-
Dec. 11, 2012, 11:29 a.m. CST
you clowns claling it pretentious wouldnt know pretentious if it unloaded on your tongue.
by Robert Evans
but i come to expect such knee jerk reactions to a mature film
-
It's not his fault I thought he was beyond solid as Superman. Too bad Synder was too damn in love with the first 2 Supermans and gave us an awful story. It would've been nice to see Routh in a film written by Goyer & Nolan.
-
DO WHAT NOW? -Namaste-
-
Dec. 11, 2012, 11:30 a.m. CST
so is everyone who complained about mopey supes in returns gonna eat their hats?
by Stephen
cuz this shit looks mopey as hell tho
-
It's fucking Superman. He's only one the most powerful beings in the universe. Show some respect, mortal.
-
I was a big fan of SUPERMAN RETURNS. LOVED it. Wanted more. Was pissed when I learned they weren't going to follow it up. This looks great. I was worried about Zack Snyder. Didn't think his sensibilities would work for Superman. I think I was wrong. VERY excited and makes up for the disappointment that was the LONE RANGER trailer.
-
Agreed. Grreat angle to examine. Love the trailer, looks to deliver on both character and action; love that pa Kent suggests to young Clark perhaps letting the kid in bus die would've been best choice, if ONLY to prevent his son (again, a walking, flying god) from developing said God complex... Think the opening scene with Clark submerged is a really interesting image, baptism and calls to mind another "messiah" figure from Heinlein. Yup. I'm grokk'n what I've seen so far. Sucker Punch was a mess, but Snyder is hardly without talent. Maybe Nolan's oversight is exactly what Snyder needed.
-
Dec. 11, 2012, 11:32 a.m. CST
Choppah, pretentious did unload on my tongue, and you're right. I thought it was delicious.
by MrWug
-
Get it together, man.
-
No need to retell origin, no need to revisit Zod, and no need to give Snyder any fucking work, ever... but god damn that's a great trailer!
-
seriously
-
Dec. 11, 2012, 11:34 a.m. CST

Think I've watched it about a dozen times and counting.
-
Boring? No, not that far from fun. Less fun? Yeah.
-
At work, can't watch it. Will watch it later. Looking forward to it.
-
In Snyder I Trust
-
Might want to go look up the meaning before you start throwing it around. It's easy. Use wikipedia or dictionary dot com or something.
-
Looks better then anything he's done so far, and way better then the Singer flick.
-
Dec. 11, 2012, 11:36 a.m. CST
There's more action in that 2:33 trailer than the ENTIRE Superman Returns movie.
by Quake II
It's full of (potential) win. Nolan put his name on it, Russell Crowe is awesome and Superman LOOKS exactly like Superman should, it will be epic.
-
Dec. 11, 2012, 11:36 a.m. CST
And if you think this movie won't have sweet ass fucking speed ramping, you're wrong.

The cape's too long again, and losing the symbol on the cape is a mistake...
by milla jovovich
colors are too dark, material is janky. Where's the curl? Where are the shorts? Sigh.
-
WOULD NEVER say anything remotely like 'yay maybe you should let kids die to protect your secret' - utter bs number one. (Note, precious and pretentious are two different words, the last super man wasn't precious, it was pretentious) Two - anyone else think they're ripping off superman two (and transformers 3) now? The bad guys from the same planet demand the good guy in prison/exile and they'll 'spare' humanity? God - this is SO STUPID - Batman and Superman ARE the antitheses of each other - the movies should be POLAR opposite in tone feel and everything else. If you don't think a good pure comic book movie can be made -you're morons and missed the avengers...you let nolan make good movies but fuck up your mythology and now you're letting him do it again.

-
Dec. 11, 2012, 11:37 a.m. CST
I'm all for this serious tone, make Superman important, because he fucking is.
by Randy
He's the hero of heroes, make his impact on the world and what he's doing important, give it emotional impact. This needs to be the Batman Begins of Superman, and start this back with smart storytelling and sharp character work. Superman has it in him to be great again, because all of us deep down have nostalgia for him, and we can believe in him if the filmmakers do. I hope the best for this.
-
Making a movie look great has never been Zack Snyder's problem... Story on the other hand...
-
Dec. 11, 2012, 11:37 a.m. CST

Looking at the number of talkbackers who are "into it" gives me hope it will find an audience. I would love that. Supes deserves a great movie.

by David Duchovny
Because if it is, I'm not even going to read these threads anymore.
-
shut the fuck up already. I can barely hear Superman's hair receding over your caterwauling. Almost 1:30 until it started looking like a Superman trailer for 10 seconds. That bit was okay. The rest... fuck, what is this film? When did people stop using lightbulbs? Why does it look so gloomy and miserable? And why is Superman only a few inches taller than Ma Kent? Is she a giant?
-
Dec. 11, 2012, 11:40 a.m. CST
Oh, and Snyder putting him in a beard? Don't think he won't show you the answer to the shaving question.
by JackSlater4
Snyder should have been Nolan's adviser on Batman.
-
lmao
-
Zack Snyder? No extreme slow motion, interesting camera angles AND an interesting take on Superman (thanks to Nolan, for sure), but hey.... What happened? End of the world already? Dawn of a new Golden Age happening too early? I never liked Superman as a superhero character. 300 (facist fantasy), Watchmen (too long and boring and meh) and Sucker Punch (a pedophile pervert's manga) are atrocities INMO (not to mention that Owl movie (whatwasthat?!) ... but I have to see THIS!
-
This looks fantastic so far. And I loved WATCHMEN. So I've got no reason not to be really excited about this. I'm a huge fan of Donner's SUPERMAN. Still one of my all-time favorite comic book adaptations. SUPERMAN RETURNS was flawed, but I still enjoyed it for the most part. But this one visually looks like a Terrence Malick film. I could go for a minimilistic version of the tale. Less dialogue. Less cheese. More drama. Telling the story through the eyes. Expression. Action and reaction. It's a different take. And I like it so far.
-
Pros: Special effects, FOS, Krypton exploding, dude from Boardwalk Empire, Costner, Crowe Cons: Too much angst, too many closeups, colors in movie look much like Superman Returns, stupid hercules armbands, no spitcurl in hair, cape is too long, costume too dark, "S" too obscured, Amy Adams as Lois Lane sucks Note: In general, it's tough to get excited about this or much else. That long gone vibe of fun and excitement is missing from movies these days. All darkness, violence and angst. I will go see it though, sigh...
-
Can not act - he's terrible - unless you want a purely emotionless statue on the screen, and nolan doesn't like emotionless - he likes tortured and over wrought super heros who are big old pussys and need to be convinced to unretire by pretty girls

Space Jesus Action Figure - Space jesus Action Cape sold seperately.
by higgledyhiggles
Looked alright. Misses the music badly though. That`s 50% Superman right there.
-
A god walking amongs us, with everything that implies. I actually love Pa Kent's unsure "maybe". You can tell it's completely against what he believes in, but he's just scared shitless for Clark. The movie seems to be about Clark showing him, that the world is indeed ready for him. Great trailer, can't wait.
-
And after you see it, you’ll know the name and what it stands for. Fuck you guys. This still cracks me up.
-
lack of Ned Beatty = pretentious
-
What trailer did you watch buddy?
-
Sounds like the same vocalist from the music at the end of Man On Fire.
-
Hope its a huge success, cos I'm a grown up and don't buy into the marvel fanboy v dc fanboy crap. No problem with the tone. there is no reason a superman movie can't be moody, but it is important it's uplifting in the end (in this case, I'm guessing that it will be that he realizes there is a place for him in the world and accepts said place. Being Superman shouldn't be a burden by the time the movie ends, even if it is at the beginning) Problem with returns wasn't that he was mopey. Its that the movie, as a whole, was dull, and the whole son sub plot was lazy, IMO.
-
Dec. 11, 2012, 11:44 a.m. CST
And after seeing this, WB needs to mesh this with Nolan's Batman, Worlds Finest straight into Justice League. Back up the Brinks truck to Christian Bales doorstep and make history.

Yeah I guess we can already tell how terrible she's going to be by seeing a split second glimpse of her in the trailer.....huh???????

I'd Be Hard-Pressed to Say That's Not a Movie I Really, Really Want to See
by Crow3711
Especially if the actual movie maintains that tone, and the marketing isn't a smoke-screen for Zach Snyder to do his usual thing. It looks like so much more than that. And I'm find with the self-importance I think. Maybe thats the direction the DC universe needs to differentiate itself from what Marvel is doing. Marvel has the fun, popcorn high-entertainment films (and I'm not knocking it, I love Captain America and Avengers) while DC will do this solemn, weight-of-the-world thing. It worked pretty well for their Batman.
-
Word on the streets is that Hans Zimmer is doing something totally different for this score to distance himself from Williams...and not in a good way. He is trying to be the first composer to do an entirely "non orchestral" non tonal, non-music score for a movie. In other words, it's going to be ALL of the sound painting from the Dark Knight trilogy (Bat flutters, thumping, hissing etc), and none (ABSOLUTELY NONE) of the themes or melodies. You might call BS, and Zimmer might fall back on what he has claimed if reaction is bad to it, but those are his intentions. Enjoy the Williams score while it's still fresh in your memory!!!
-
Dec. 11, 2012, 11:49 a.m. CST
milla jovavich by asking for the shorts again you have brought this upon yourself. Where is batman's grey suit? Where are his white eyeballs? Feel that? That's the crushing realization that

you are obsessing over one detail and leaving possibly thousands of others unnoticed. Like how you're 42 and think that fruit brute has any nutritional value for you.
-
I can't remember the last time a Spandex Saviour rebootamaquel flick hit the movie screens!
-
Silly on the nose soundtracks. Mabye this is a new Snyder, not the one that just a few years ago would put Higher by Creed on the soundtrack when Supes takes off for the first time.
-
You fanboys that are nitpicking are just making yourself look like an idiot. This may not be Citizen Kane but it damned sure looks like it will bury that last Superman Returns aberration.
-
i thought the WATCHMEN songtrack was perfect meld (save one song) of sound and vision. Essential to the source even.
-
solid trailer. good tone. looking forward to it.

The music in Snyder's movies has been awesome.

Superman shaves by using his heat vision in a mirror. Don't know if they will show that in this movie or not, but we'll find out in six months. It's kinda funny. Before I came to read the boards, but after watching this (awesome) trailer, the word pretentious came to my mind too. Not about the trailer itself, mind you, but about how some idiots would respond to the trailer in the talkback. I found what I expected, but thankfully also found more people liked it than I was expecting. Some of you are just assholes who can't be pleased no matter what. If you think you can do better, get into the movie making business yourselves and show the rest of us how it's supposed to be done. If not, then shut the hell up and enjoy what you want in the theaters, and ignore what you don't. It's really rather simple. I thought this was a great trailer, and I expect Snyder to come through and deliver a great movie. He's earned the job. Hopefully he'll earn a shot at its sequel too.
-

That was fucking AWESOME. Check your soul, you fucking haters. What a tired cynical fuckwit you'd have to be to dislike that trailer. Holy SHIT.
-
Pretentious means it's not aimed at chronic , lonely, zit faced mongoloids that will never so much as get a sniff of a woman in their entire life? Ok. Looks sweet to me, but then i get laid with monotonous regularity. So what do i know?

WB: Hand a blank check to Bale and tell him to write in the 0s ... have him cameo in this movie, please. And I want a glimpse of Darkseid.
by Judge Briggs
Sigh ... that would be a fucking fanboy's dream come true. WB needs to get Bale to reprise his role as Batman ... really.
-
But everything else made me laugh because it was so on the nose. If that was his intention to produce laughter, then he succeeded, same goes for Sucker Punch too.
-
...finally, one reason to check out this otherwise steaming pile of Nolan.

I just loved this trailer!! This movie is going to be epic!! The hate around this from the typical usual haters makes me laugh.

by Mephisto the Great
To me, Superman was all about integrity, following an ideal that is almost dead in this day and age. I hope they maintain that sense of duty and self-sacrifice, rather than darken the man's image so we can "relate" to him. That's one thing I dug about Nolan's first two Batman movies, the story of the "immovable object" who would go to great lengths to stand firm to his decision to do good. Looking forward to this!

I felt this way after the first trailer and even more so after this one. The Age of the brooding dark superhero is over. Marvel has shown that. This will not reach the level of success Marvel has because in general people or over this type of comic story telling. I think it reached its pinacle with TDK. When I saw TDKR i felt the same way, that this iteration of hero's has run its course. It's heavy handed and focused too much on message when people want escapism. Iron Man 3 wil crush this movie, Gaurdians of the Galaxy will crush this movie. Yes it is in part due to the genius of marketing and planning that Disney has done, but it is also due to the tone. This movie will not launch a franchise, it will not launch Justice League.
-
how come no ones's complaining about that anymore?

Not much of a Superman fan myself. But I do think it looks good and I bet Christopher is smiling right now.

Superman 1978 was the last film to deal with Superman's Origin
by Samuel Fulmer
That'll turn 35 next year. This isn't like Amazing Spider-Man doing it ten years after the Raimi films. I guess there have been plenty of Superman tv shows (like that one that was on the WB/CW for ten years that was a big hit with teenage girls), but truth be told it's been preaty damn long since Supes origin has played out on the big screen.

WTF are you talking about? He takes off flying from earth into space half way into the trailer.
-
Zack is 50/50. I liked his Dawn of The dead, and Watchmen, but 300 and Sucker Punch were shit. This is fucking SUPERMAN folks, I want to see him do super things. Maybe they're saving it for the next trailer, man I hope so. Superman Returns broke my heart. I don't put much weight in Nolan being involved, but at least we saw ZOD! for a moment. I'm still positive for this flick! Wish it was still coming out in two weeks as originally planned, but oh well.
-

He's not propelling himself through the air with some unseen "force", like in past iterations. All the energy for the flight comes from him using his muscles to launch off the ground. No hovering. No course changes. (That we've seen so far.)

Snyder's problem with 300, Watchmen and Sucker Punch (beside script problems) is that each look like they were production designed to death. The look sucked the life and emotion out of the story.
by openthepodbaydoorshal
Here he seems to take a naturalistic approach, at least for some of the scenes. Secondly, he has a great cast (Cavill, the unknown factor though), which will help greatly...And maybe Nolan's influence will help him tone down his visual flourishes....

Seriously. that cape looks fucking excellent. smallville or wherever our fishermans friend is based seems kinda twilighty. I don't know, some of it looks kinda pretinious and the last pretentious superhero movie i watch was na lees hulk and that was shit. the latter half of the trailer looks decent enough. Will this be enough to remove the stench of singers superman ( brandon lee was great as supes though) I dunno. I dunno how they will dovetail this screen superman into justice league. who the fuck knows what's warners strategy is. I'll watch. not overly hyped to see the movie as yet though. maybe that will be built upon nearer the date. But it's not the fan boys they need getting in through the doors. It's ordinary cinema goers. I'm not sure this is the trailer for them.

If this gives us a little of that sense of what it would be like to have a god among us, then great because no Superman film has had that impact. His main appearance on the world stage should be something that excites and terrifies the world before he becomes that guy that everyone prays to when an alien invasion fleet comes down or a giant monster is attacking a city. Superman is action Jesus, and no film has properly shown us that he's a being people would literally pray for to show up in their darkest hour. Singer tried to go there but got caught up in the sacrifice angle.

I have to say I'm impressed and have no problems with the changes in suit, style etc. But I can't figure out what it's showing him flying towards at approximately 2:06. My viewing conditions right now are not optimal, all I can make out is a bright, white light. Any one else make it out?
-
Pretty sure Snyder wouldn't hear the end of it if they decide to take away Superman's ability to fly. That would be retarded. That is shooting yourself in the foot and ultimately, make fucking no sense whatsoever. Not to mention, if something like that were remotely true, I am pretty sure the internets would be awash in rumors by now.
-
I have just watched it again and I nearly fell asleep ...... seriously ....... it may have those things ...... but all I thought was ......... shit I really want to shag Amy Adams .......... c'mon this is a superman movie and we dont see anything Superman ish apart from him posing in his suit!!!! ...... the rest of the trailer may as well be the Battleship trailer ...... generic cgi bangs and explosions!

It should be a no-brainer. Guy in a red and blue suit punches stuff. Big stuff. How did Bryan Singer F that up? He even had a really good Superman in Routh.

That and quick cutting with CGI kind of had a transformers destruction feel to it But having the majority of the movie be about Clark finding his place and wrestling with who he wants to be is awesome. It wasn't just a bad Superman movie--it was a bad movie. The fact that it was horribly paced and boring is even more unforgivable being that it was also a Superman movie. I've tried to watch it 4 different times to see what you see, and I have never made it more than an hour and half through it.

He could still fly. He simply wouldn't be able to hover.
by Royston Lodge
He could launch himself from the ground and use his cape to steer, but he wouldn't be able to hover or change direction on a dime. It could be done that way to make the battles more interesting. For example, if Super can fly in any direction then there's no way he'd go careering out of control when punched by a bad guy. He can just use his flying power to keep from crashing into a building. But if his flying power is actually a leaping power, that means that he can be sent careering out of control by a big punch.

There are literally two films that gave me a migraine upon viewing them in a theater
by Samuel Fulmer
#1 was Superman Returns...#2 was the Return of the Jedi Special Edition the moment that damn horrible computer generated song and dance number came up in Jabba's Palace.
-
Because, you stupid basement dwelling douche bags, the MARKET/fan base actually consists of more than 20-40-something mamas boys, ie CHILDREN...for whom an origin story, esp THIS one, where said CHILDREN can watch both kick-ass action and (just maybe) a decent character relationship between a young god-to-be and his father is worth telling. Necessary? no, but hardly a deal breaker.

Since Superman is short on credible physical threats, a spiritual/emotional struggle is what will ultimately make a Superman movie work. I think they have the right idea.

Of course I'll pay to see this in the theater but probably will be disappointing.

Is Cavill. He just doesnt "look" like Superman. Just doesnt have the presence that Reeve had. And just listening to him talk (which I am presuming is to Lois) near the end of the trailer....really?....that is what he sounds like? I dunno...I know I am being harsh on only a few minutes of footage but I am really not impressed. The most impressive thing to me was when Costner was saying he should have let that kid die....that is an interesting conversation I am looking forward to in the movie. I will be seeing this, but since this is going to be an origin story....I dont see how this is going to top Superman The Movie. Reeve, Williams, Brando, Donner, Hackman....EPIC. And most importantly....fun as hell, even if the FX is dated. But I look at that and at Reeve and I still believe he flew. This just looks like a CGI mashup. Shame. Hope they have some practical flying effects in there.

Music in trailer written by classical composer Patrick Cassidy.
by john
Too all you music experts out there commenting on this music - is not written by Han Zimmer or from Gladiator. It is written by a composer called Patrick Cassidy. He also composed music for Layer Cake, the opera in Hannibal and Malick's trailer for Tree of Life.
-
He's the best-cast Superman ever, IMHO.
-
He's not leaping like he did in the early comics, he's flying. He didn't jump from the ground into orbit, that's just silly. He'll "hover." The bit where he crouches on the snow before he flies into the air? He's concentrating, focusing his abilities, perhaps even generating some sort of displacement field or something, judging by the extremely limited area of effect. "Steer with his cape." Give me a break.
-
Of course I could be wrong. Obviously. But still, we haven't seen him hover in either the first teaser or this trailer.

What about the part where he enters space, and you know, FUCKING FLIES.

If anything, Amy Adams comes off as too girlish in all her adult roles. It worked in The Master, because of the juxtaposition of her girlish looks and he pitch-black personality, but still her looks are very girlish. I've always thought Holly-Marie Coombs would be a good Lois Lane.

Singer's movie was Jesus Christ: Superman!...that's the wrong kind of self-important.
by Baked
This seems more like Superman as Klaatu from "The Day the Earth Stood Still" or Superman as Prometheus or (completely fake, non-douchebag) Hercules. A capable, kind-hearted figure of immense power and lineage who is willing to shoulder the burdens of the world patiently despite humanity's flaws to save it from itself...minus the glorification and worship. In the end, Superman Returns suffered from what many early-review fanboys and even some well-meaning critics praised it for -- hero worship. And at the same time, the Donner movies had a respectful, complacent view of the figure as someone who goes out and gets the job done with a blue-collar work ethic...and that job is saving the world. Think about it. When Clark is in Kansas in the Donner films, everything is soft lighting, sunrises, heroic angles, Luke standing on a hilltop staring into the twin suns. When Clark enters Metropolis, it's Paper Chase and Network, a gritty, fast-paced, nobody gives a fuck about you helter-skelter world. Even when Superman does heroic acts, the camera is usually level with him. The lighting is moderate, and you even get to look down on Superman from above several times. In Singer's Superman, the camera worships him. The light glows off of his skin. When he's in a bad mood, the sun goes down and he's bathed in darkness. He controls the mood of the world. Donner's Superman is a man in a cape while Singer's Superman is a god among men. So Man of Steel's approach, which seems to pay more homage to the matter-of-fact Metropolis of Donner's story at every single level and treats Superman like a man with superpowers is an interesting touch. To be honest, I'm more impressed with Snyder's cinematic visual language than ANYTHING Nolan offered in the Batman trilogy after Batman Begins and it's only a 2 minute trailer. Then again, it's not a completely original language either, but it's moving.
-
They said 'she's nearing 40, and Cavill is around 30, and they miscast her'. Some quality morons posting on this article. Maybe they wanted Kristen Stewart? I agree with you man, Lois is a woman, and I couldn't be happier with Amy Adams being cast.

Superman is fucking invincible, let's face it. He'll never die in a movie, and even if Doomsday kills him, he'll still com back to life, aka invincible. No one ever takes Zod, Ursa, and Non seriously. They're not menacing in the least. In fact, they're almost tourists when they arrive on the planet. And the contrast between their arrival and their complete indifference to the locals is kind of jarring in hindsight. But again, it's how Donner treats the Superman mythos. He never tries to force the stakes...Zod is a villain who is going to take over your world and you can't do anything about it, so he has very little interest in trying to intimidate you, so why should Donner?

I still think a stand-alone Krypto movie could theoretically work.
by Royston Lodge
It would be a challenge, but it could work. Get someone like the director of The Bear to do it. H ave Krypto be the occupant of a test rocket that Jor-El sent into space. When Krypton explodes, Krypto's rocket gets sucked into the warp field created by Kal-El's ship. When Kal-El's ship lands in Kansas, Krypto's ship lands in some mountainous wilderness in the middle of fucking nowhere. Have very few humans in the movie. Make the whole thing about this dog surviving in the wilderness. If you think it would be hard for a kid like Clark to figure out how to deal with his powers, just imagine how confusing it would be for some dumb mutt to figure out.

-
Do you mean the theatrical cut or the Donner version? Because I think the Donner cut is just as good as Superman 1978. In fact, you could even argue it's better considering the all-out brawl between Superman and the three Kryptonians.
-
Donner/Lester hybrid cut. The Donner cut on it's own is just a mess, and the Lester cut could be improved with some of the Donner stuff in it.
-
I mean, its obvious they're going for Emoman, not Superman. Or to put in better words for you lugnuts, its how Superman gets his groove on, with help from the superfriend of General Zod. So expect 1.5 hours of gnashing of teeth and getting his ass kicked/thrown in jail/humbled/brought down to earth, followed by .5 hours of realizing he needs to Man Up And Not Be a Bitch, and a finale where he becomes the hero everyone expects along with 'splosions and fighting with lots of people dying and the Earth realizing they really do need this Alien after all. But ya, basically its 2-2.5 hours of a Dr. Phil 'Should he be Superman?' episode. I'm not sure this take on the character is going to really get any traction at all with the current audience. Most, who were wristcutters in the 90's have since either died or moved past that phase. Goth just isn't what it was.
-
I am glad that he is being shown as an avatar of goodness instead of the heat vision-happy ragebeast "Jim Lee Superman" Snyder talked about early on. I believe in the Superman character and nothing I've seen so far violates that. I am dubious of the aesthetics of this film, from the costuming to the cinematography. I hope that the choppiness and hand-heldness is a trailer-only thing. I am also very afraid of the Zod & Kryptonian villains aspect of this movie. I fear that this will be the retread of SUPERMAN II that I once feared INTO DARKNESS would be in regards to THE WRATH OF KHAN.
-
Good trailer in that everyone apart from the lead, even the younger Clark, seem to be able to act and not resemble Scottish tennis players.
-
. . .if only because we're getting the origin ONE MORE TIME. I'm sorry but in the old days, even when a movie sucked. . . even then, you didn't remove it from continuity. I think more clever filmmakers would have incorporated the previous Singer film into their story, even if they wanted to take the character in a different direction--and I'm sure they'll still use the old John Williams theme song. Confusing as hell--honestly, what's the point? Way to stick by your guns, Warner Bros.
-
I don't know how anyone can find fault with that trailer. I am really pulling for this movie now.

Not Flying but Jumping in and Arc??? Did you guys watch the trailer??
by Karacterzero
Right before he flies the snow and little rocks around his hand in that shot start floating and swirling...anti gravity type stuff...He obviously flies...he does not jump...for a bunch of nitpickers you sure don't pay attention...plus, there's no way they make a new superman movie where he doesn't fly...come on, you guys are just trying to find nonsense to whine about... Looks Awesome...count me in for sure!
-
The story on it is still solid and holds up. Its just the fashions(especially the Zod Squad) and special effects and dialogue are quite lacking to todays standards.
-
Johnathan telling Clark to leave a bus full of kids to die is not the way is not Superman.
-
But the more I see of this new take the more it sends a shiver down my spine! In a good way that is! Those tiny scenes are so powerful I can only hope the movie's this good. By the way I love it when he puts his fist down on the ground and the snow starts to move away from it! The flying scenes are top notch. I'm really waiting for this one as it seems like the emphasis is on the right things.
-
Both cuts suck. I think my lingering respect for the movie was residual awe from being a little kid when I first saw it. Case in point (both cuts). The so-called brutal centerpiece of the movie is the fight in the city between Superman and Zod (et. al.) it goes on, and on, and towards the end of it suddenly there are these onlookers, calmly watching from the sidewalk...one of whom has a fresh ice cream cone he must have bought during the fight....one of the supers uses their wind breath and the scoop of ice cream blows right into the guy's face. HAHA FUNNY! Who edited that? The tone is nuts from one second to the next in that movie. Good moments: -Lois jumping into the river to *prove* Clark is superman -Kneel before Zod -Superman breaking Zod's fingers. The Bad?: EVERYTHING ELSE I mean it - and I'm not trying to be a troll...it just recently occured to me to look at the movie with fresh eyes...and it is bad. Donner's version with the weird resurrection theme is even worse than Lester's non-explaination of how he got his powers back.
-
is an 'Elseworlds' way to go. All of those who don't want the origin story, who see this trailer as too 'emo', who are tired of Superman questioning himself, those fans want 'Traditional' Superman. I don't think one can make the action-packed, punch a giant robot, fight-to-the death w Doomsday, team-up with WW and the King of Atlantis, type of Superman without coming off like 'Avengers'. That's not to say I wouldn't enjoy a more 'Avengers' type of Superman, but I can understand why people won't get on board with this heavier, more introspective approach. Marvel and Disney made a really great action ride, and paid respect to their characters by making them bright and noble, also a little self-aware they're in a comic book movie; 'He's adopted', 'Puny God', 'Shawarma', it's all very fun stuff! WB and DC could copy that format and make a lot of fans happy. But they'd rather take us all to church with Batman and Superman. They're trying to make us learn something before they give us the candy. I was very happy with 'Batman Begins'; it made Bruce Wayne a realized character and taught us that justice is about more than revenge. But I didn't get the Batman film the city deserved until 'The Dark Knight'. I am really looking forward to 'Man of Steel' but the sequel should be more of a 'Superman Begins' type of story.

If they had to go the origin route again, I like it. Very much. ZOD looks amazing. It looked like Clark was in a kryptonian vessel of some sort at one point. My only fear is if they steep this in the misery of him hiding who he is for too long. I don't want to see superman be superman for only like 5 minutes. Other then that, this really does look pretty awesome. Would love to see a shot of him DOING something other then flying around, but I am sure there will be more to come right??

The definition of pretentious is attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed. Hmmm, Man of Steel looks like it actually has everything we could ever want and we only just saw bits and pieces of the things it has to offer from a two minute trailer. What's there not to like or look forward to in this film? It looks awesome! Already, this looks superior to Superman Returns, a movie that many fanboys unfairly criticized. You really need to chill out if you're worried about how good a film is going to be just because you think it looks "pretentious." If this is pretentious, others could argue that The Dark Knight series or The Avengers was pretentious. And speaking of Dark Knight, are we forgetting that Nolan is producing this? It says his name in the friggin trailers! From what can be understood and from what has been actually reported, he has been very involved in this film's production so I think we can be rest assured that he is bringing us an epic interpretation of the character with a restrained Zack Snyder at the helm. By restrained, I mean I hope half the film won't be in slo-mo. Otherwise, love Snyder and I think he'll bring us a fantastic movie!

I'm surprised they included this in the trailer. The Kents couldn't have their own children. Clark is their only child, given to them my sheer chance. Even with a virtually indestructible child, Pa Kent still worries about him and wants to protect him. That line almost made me cry.

This is shaping up to be the best Superman we've seen since Superman:The Movie. Cavill just may give the late, great Christopher Reeve a run for his money. LOVE the trailer. May I have some more, please?
-
The poster had me impressed in that it showed Supes allowing himself to be taken into custody. The last question of this trailer sends almost the exact opposite message; is humanity worthy of a Superman. The character works best when he is his most humble; trying to be worthy of the world he protects. He has more than enough power to rule that world and by most any measure should be regarded with fear...except for his humility and genuine selflessness. That is what sets him apart morally from most anyone else with those powers. Some of the most enduring political ideas are those meant to restrain men in power (the rule of law, checks and balances, etc). Yet, simply because of his physical nature, those don't pose any substantive restraint on him. The only limits he has are those he accepts due to his character and ethics. The old saying that absolute power corrupts absolutely doesn't apply to him because solely because of his humility and sense of duty.

But by the time I do, it'll probably have a sweet Man Of Steel skin.

Or not understanding the character at all or the fact that Johnathan gives him the moral code. Shit, if John is saying shit what morality could Clark have.

More emo Superman crap, but at least it looks like he throws a punch in this one. Still, when are directors going to learn what makes Superman WORK? It's not drama, or grey colors or deep thoughts. Superman should be BIG and Exciting. It sh ould be a bright colorful world that fits all the powers that Superman has, treating it so seriously and morass just doesn't fit. I want a movie where Superman fights a freaking giant robot, where the world doesn't look like ours. One day I guess...

Nobody else has agreed with me, so you can't complain about a 'bunch' of whiners. Also, I never said it was a criticism. It looks really dark...and frankly not much fun. But - you can't pass judgement on a trailer. At this point, though, I do NOT think we need a re-hashing of the origin. But you know if they are shelling out money for Russel Crow, we're spending some time on Krypton. Best case, they do it through a few flash backs or something, that way we get more "new" story.

Let's get this out of the way: Those of you who keep saying "it looks like Terrence Malick" read that somewhere back when the first trailer came out, thought it sounded funny and/or intelligent, and now continue to use it. Incorrectly. Many of the shots in the teaser looked enough like Malick's style of shooting that it was apropos in a winky-wink kind of way. Those are no longer prevalent in this new trailer. You have to stop using that simile now. Go and actually watch some Malick movies and you'll understand. But get some coffee first. They are like visual lullabies. Also: They didn't "relocate" Smallville. Clark takes a job on a fishing boat during a bit of a "personal journey". There are pictures of me working on a horse ranch when I was 17 in Wyoming. That didn't mean I was from Wyoming. (I'm from New Jersey, originally). And, finally: As far as the "Pa Kent would NEVER say that" thing...well...All I can say is "bullshit". People say a LOT of things in their lifetimes. Sometimes they say the WRONG things. To me, it sounds as if Pa was in a panic over the safety of his own kid. Not just the "keeping the secret" part. Panic. Worry. Perhaps anger. Clearly upset. People say things they don't always necessarily mean. It's a very HONEST few lines of dialog spoken out of context during a movie trailer. Take a breath.

sorry...I was scrolling through and read a couple of your posts thinking it was other people... Criticism remark was more of a general statement about all the other petty complaints as well, not necessarily aimed just at you... Either way, he definitely is not leaping...and is most certainly using some sort of power to fly as stated in my other post...I liked that scene a lot showing the rocks and what not start to float around him...good stuff... In general...I think this looks like exactly what Superman needs...I like that it seems Ma kent is helping her son try to deal with getting these powers...I don't think Pa Kent's "Maybe" line about letting them die is bad at all...he is clearly struggling with worry about his son...we don't know what he says after that so the complainers (not you royston, in general) should stop passing judgement so fast...dealing with these powers for a young kid and adult should seem heavy and important...I like the tone they are going for... Can't wait for this...Hopefully he'll also have the Super Cellophane S power to throw at his enemies too ;-)

You can call it Space Jesus if you like. That's not inaccurate. Except Supes has a connection to mankind and humility that is the center of his strength. by Royston Lodge
Pa Kent knows that at some point in his life, Supes is going to have to make a choice between who gets to live and who gets to die. It's inevitable. Does Pa Kent have some magic advice to give young Clark on how to make that decision? No, he doesn't. The best he can do is a half-hearted 'maybe'. It's tragedy, folks. Personally, I can't wait.
-
Just remember, Zach Snyder always makes good trailers. It's when his trailers are expanded to feature length which cause problems. It's a good trailer, but I am still skeptical. It is interesting that Snyder finally is shooting on location instead of just greenscreens. I think the success of the film will largely fall on Henry Cavill's performance. I haven't seen him in anything yet, but I haven't heard good things about his acting ability.
-
if the film is bad it's snyder's fault... if the film is a success it's nolan's doing... i like the angle they are getting at. he is different and the world would fear him instead of instantly embracing him...i like that kind of "realistic". i really hope the pa kent line is an audio edit.

Why are people flailing around about what this movie is about.
by tailhook
Listen to the trailer and what they've said. Its a movie about him becoming Superman. All gnashing of teeth and shit and running around like a little bitch for 2-2.5 hours before finally 'transforming' into Superman when needed most with Earth going.. oh.. ya.. we need this fucking Alien.. yes please save us. I really don't think that take is going to fly.. irony intended. Its basically the same fucking thing that Neo went through in The Matrix.. going from lowly snot-nosed computer programmer to NEO. It worked well for that movie, which basically WAS a modern take on Superman... this one? I don't see them pulling it off, say 10% chance of nailing the landing.
-
Marvel fans, often, made fun of DC growing up because the characters were overpowered and 2-dimensional. Marvel characters dealt with personal issues like breaking up with your girlfriend (Spidey) or racial predudice (X-Men) or alcoholism (Iron Man), etc, etc. DC characters did nothing but beat people up and save the world from meteors, each and every week. Maybe the people who think Superman should be bright and optimistic and about Supes saving people are DC folk, and those who think a Supes movie that explores the darker ideas are Marvel folk? It's just a theory. Commence flaming ... now.

So re-telling an origin story isn't really bad, especially given the fact that a lot of the target audience probably has never watched the original films or even Smallville. When nerds get over the fact that these movies aren't aimed that their over-35 asses, they would have less to bitch about. I don't hate Snyder. He directed one of the best opening 15 minutes of a horror/action film with "Dawn of the Dead". So I'm glad he is so far able to prove his "Haters" wrong. This trailer looks good. No stupid NIN songs like The Avengers. And any nitpicking is just fucking reaching. A lot of you are fucking spoiled. Look at those old ass Fantastic Four and Captain America movies with no budgets that were full of cheese. Then look at this trailer and turn off your negative bullshit. These movies are not made especially for adults. If they were, it would be R-Rated.

On November 26, 1945, the driver of a Lake Chelan School District bus carrying 20 young students and a woman, skids off South Lakeshore Road during a snow storm and plunges down a 30-foot embankment into Lake Chelan. The woman and five children manage to escape thorough broken windows and reach the shore, but the driver and 15 students drown in the icy waters. Two bodies are recovered soon after the accident, but the bus and remaining 14 victims disappear. After searching for a week, Navy divers finally find the bus sitting precariously on a ledge in more than 200 feet of water. The bus is carefully hoisted to the surface, but it contains the bodies of only four students and the driver. Lake Chelan has a reputation of never yielding its dead and the bodies of the missing nine victims will never be recovered. It is the worst school-related accident in Washington state history.

A movie can be for adults without being full of sex. I am simply not interested in seeing whiny teenagers struggling with problems that mean nothing to me. Everyone rags on Twilight for doing that (and rightly so); why is it okay when it's Superman? And as far as my over-35 ass goes, I get to chose whether it goes into a theater seat or not. At the moment, not. But it's way too early.

Maybe I'm going through grittiness burnout or something, but the trailer went past somber and almost seemed outright bleak in places--which just seems all kinds of wrong for a Supes quasi-origin movie. And I know--I KNOW--that a lot of folks are going "That's the point!" right this second and that Nolan's involvement probably telegraphed it to SOME degree, but still...it feels damned peculiar, and I can't quite dismiss that yet. (And let's be fair: this applies to a trailer, and obviously not the finished film. It's entirely possible that the film has a much more balanced tone. I'm going to try to keep my faith in Nolan and Goyer, and hope that they reined Snyder in enough to make this work.)
-
I love, love, love Costner's delivery of that line. Trying to teach Clark to be self-centered, to hold back those altruistic qualities and protect himself from being used or abused, so proud to see that selflessness in his son, yet so scared of his fellow humanity ... it's beautiful.

That's the whole point...Supes without the Christ dynamic is FUCKING Booooooooooring. And it's his Father, understandably concerned... the CHOICE will be left to Supes. Again, the whole fucking point. While Superman II is certainly date, what Donner & Co did by making Clark mortal was brillinat and funny at the same time. As much as IV (I think) was a steaming pile, the scene where Clark (after saving a kid for the umpteenth time) muttered 'If I had a nickel for every time" was classic. One of the many reasons Christianity's mythos leaves me cold: OK, so you're the Son fo GOD. What's that? he ressurrected you? The being which created EVERYTHING? Soooo...Why am I impressed? But I digress..

I think he was the one outstanding thing in Superman Returns. He was an awesome Superman and Clark. Physically right, got the tone of Clark right, IMO. Wasnt his fault the script was horseshit and they respected the Donner stuff a little too much. Would have liked to see him get another crack at the role. Not sure how I feel about Cavill yet, I am fuckin sick of the screen time the beard is getting in the trailers. We get it, he's also a guy who can grow a beard.
-
best female vocalist out there. Also, this does looks like it's treading the same ground that Smallville did, but oh, so much better. Kevin Costner > John Schneider. Just a bit. This actually looks really cool. I'm still skeptical of Snyder after the testosterone fascism of 300, the misguided misogyny disguised as girl power in Sucker Punch and how badly he missed the point on Watchmen. But I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt if he listened to even one piece of advice that Nolan gave him.
-

Looks great, but the sound is lacking without Williams' score
by The PimpDragon
I look forward to the inevitable YouTube vids of people taking the Williams score to the MOS trailers! Honestly, I think the tone of the film is interesting but the music is too moody. I've always thought Williams' theme matched the character perfectly - an anthem for a being for whom it feels the sun exists. Superman shouldn't be as dark and moody as Batman, for my money's worth, but I'm looking forward to seeing the film. Snyder really hasn't let me down yet. Sure, Sucker Punch isn't the best story, but visually it was unlike anything that year!
-
What, do you want an invincible man skipping across the world singing songs?

I think they also believe Calendar Man and Crazy Quilt were the two best Batman villains.

Pa Kent isn't always portrayed as Clark's moral teacher.
by Royston Lodge
In many (most?) versions of the story, Pa Kent is shown as aloof and stand-offish towards Clark. After all, he's usually portrayed as an elderly, childless, stoic Kansas corn farmer, not a philosophical guru. It's usually Martha that is portrayed as Clark's moral guide, not Jonathan.

-
the trailer - TRAILER - makes it look about as malicky as a superman trailer possibly could. sweeping, classical score, voice-over only provided by character dialogue rather than that guy with the morning/flu voice, the cinematic ache of being an american "human."
-
Amy Adams is perfect Lois Lane casting. The problem could arise, 3-4 sequels down the road, but they'll probably reboot/recast again anyway.
-
I'm not sure why letting Superman be Superman is so tough to pull of in these teasers and trailers. Is is all the VFX that still need to be done that hold it back? Sure, seeing him fly is nice but they didn't show us where he went beyond the edge of the atmosphere. If he went to the moon, show him making a new crater on the moon! If he went to admire the view of Earth then it is probably safe to say that we've all seen that before. I just wanted to see him actually doing something in this. Well, not just anything. I didn't want to see him lifting a tractor over his head. I didn't want to see him changing clothes. I didn't want to see bullets ricocheting off of him. If he had been catching and releasing missiles then tossing them back at freaky supertanks, that might've been cool. If it showed him scorching 'Jah Rules!' on the side of a building, that would be alright. If he was shown breaking off a cell tower and hitting giant spherical drones for homeruns, batter up! The thing about Superman Returns is it was such a wasted chance to make something interesting. I hope they don't repeat that by adding all this substance to the story and falling way short of the ACTION and the STORY and the VILLAIN. I don't know why people liked that movie. I had to rewatch it after people told me it was awesome. On the second viewing, it just sucked that much worse. All the time showing Superman getting his ass kicked by Luther and his two/three dudes on an artificial island prior to Superman getting rescued by a love rival was time wasted. They could have shown Superman anyplace else doing something, fighting something that Batman would run away from. But, no that just led to the most powerful creature on that planet in a hospital bed. WTF? The time spent showing him floating in Space, eavesdropping on the planet? WTF? Again, he could have been making cheese on the moon and at least he would have been doing something Super. This movie will probably be good. They can't screw up twice in a row. There needs to be a balance trailer that shows he is more than an absent-minded fisherman waxing about growing up. I mean that bearded dude could be fantasizing about wearing a new suit as far as we know. Show us Superman doing SOMETHING (other than flying into the quick cut) and remove that doubt.

No, no. Now, you listen to me. When you first came to us, we thought people would come and take you away because, when they found out, you know, the things you could do... and that worried us a lot. I don't know whose reason, or whatever the reason is... Maybe it's because... uh... I don't know. But I do know one thing. It's *not* to score touchdowns. Huh?

Origin: We know it better then anything ever taught in school please stop! by slywalker
-
#1) Chris Nolan. His sensibilities were well-suited for the (first two) Batman movies, but I really hope his brooding, heavy-handed faux intellectualism doesn't weigh down Superman, who is essentially a fun, exciting character. #2) The score. PLEASE give us the John Williams theme, or at the very least, SOME theme that we can hum on the way home. Leave the anonymous droning sounds to the Batman movies. Thank you.
-
Maybe they could do a movie together and, you know, make out?
-
I'm soooooo sick of posts like this: origin again??? why!? by tnmshopnet disspointed that it looks like the first half of the movie will be an origin story ..... is that really necessary??? dont we all know this ??? BECAUSE IT'S A NEW TAKE ON SUPERMAN! Donner's movie is NOT the end-all-be-all take on Superman and his origin. This is a "what if" movie and that's what I've always wanted. That's why you see shots of Superman in handcuffs being escorted by soldiers, because in the real world, if someone who can do what superman can do, part of the world would probably worship him as a god, part of the world would feel there's hope for a better future and A LOT of people would be SCARED SHITLESS. Superman needs to EARN the trust of the world, which is why he lets them put him in handcuffs... Superman doesn't feel like everyone else is beneath him... he aspires to be a good, regular human guy just as much as he aspires to be the best Superman he can be. In Donner's movie, the world's reaction to him is ridiculous... the world sees him catch someone from a falling building and help a cat out of a tree and the world apparently thought "Ok, I like you now." That just wouldn't happen and I've always wanted a movie that explores the complexity of the character... Donner's Superman wasn't a very complex character at all... as good as Reeves was, his Superman was more of a cardboard cutout character with very little depth. Contrary to what many people believe, Superman is every bit if not more complex than Batman... except the world hasn't seen that yet and it's awesome that they finally will. Do you people realize that they've done a ton of origin stories in the comics? the origins, in my opinion, get better and better with each new version. Why people cannot understand that in order to have a new take on Superman, you need to have a new origin story is beyond me. No, the Donner movie does NOT mean no new origin story should be told... people love to say "Ah well everyone knows the origin story so they shouldn't need one in a new Superman movie." WRONG. There are tons of kids who do NOT know Superman's origin and those kids I know who have seen Donner's Superman don't like it much... it's extremely dated...
-
It looks like a remake of Superman Returns. I still think they should have gone with a new villain that hasn't been used in the films before, much like Nolan did with Batman Begins.
-
Kneel, place hand on the ground and burst up into the sky. How original!!
-
Superfriends may be for kiddies, but the whole existential whinging thing is NOT for adults. It's for teens and YAs (and emotionally stunted older folks) who are trying to cope with (or delay or avoid) becoming adults. Sure, I went through that crap when I was in high school and college, but it's behind me now. It was bad enough to have lived through once; why on earth would I want to watch other people do it? I have to wonder whether wanting Superman to be all mopey and dark isn't more about trying to bring him down to our level, rather than elevating us to be more like he is. And as far as the Christ metaphor goes, it's been done to death. Joseph Campbell did no one any favors when he distilled mythology down into a formula.

thats just the backlash and the bandwagon talking, you see a superhero film and you think it needs to be light and fluffy and fun and john cartery because one film managed to be a rowsing success because *gasp* it managed to eschew the traditional trappings of a comic book movie and became more about characters, emotions, complex thematics and metaphors about thinks that have nothing to do with comic continuity. No no THIS is superman. This is the equivalent of the dick donner film where he had absolutely no frame of reference as to what a "super hero film" was...so he just made a FILM with superman in it. This is the exact same thing, create a character that is real to life, that is relatable and exciting to watch and has enough depth so you can really delve into the performance and the strong cast of character that populate a dense world. A world that has plenty of grey moral desicions something that you want to see in a FILM not read in a comic book. Once you have that nailed down...then any action scene means a hundred times more to the audience. Superman returns and hulk never failed because of their serious, self important tone, they failed because simply put they were boring as shit. The characters were badly written and they were put into complex moral scenarios which no one cared because their characters were not compelling. Hence none of the action meant much. This feels nothing like superman returns...it gives me the same feeling i had with batman begins and it's sequels, but a converse to that feeling. While batman brought out the brooding aggression in me, the vengeance, the pent up agony that bruce felt coursed through me as i felt bale grunt and growl his way through these films against everyone and everything as Zimmer's scores belted out. This feels more melancholic, more meditative, more heroic and optimistic...yet with the same sense of danger and gray moral desicions that affect both men. If done right...fuck the JL movie this could be the perfect mirror series to the TDK trilogy.

I'm so glad people are also concerned that Snyder would do awful soundtrack choices in this movie. I really look forward to it being free of that and being impressed with Snyder having outgrown this childish tendency. (Familiar songs are good sometimes, but not in epic things or as the main drive of what's happening like in Sucker Punch, but they do certainly have their place). Regarding Pa Kent in the trailer - what we're seeing is someone be human. We all equivocate about how much good we should do. (I miss John Schneider though - he did such a great job of "Be honest, truthful, good and giving ... but lie and obstruct your way to that point.") I enjoyed the trailer. I also agree with people about how it's nice to NOT have Lex Luthor. Recurring villains are good - using them as the only villain or cheaply returning to them (X-Men + Magneto and Sentinels, arguably New Doctor Who having the Daleks come back so much) is not good. It makes the recurring villains seem cheap and also discardable. It also makes the question flare up "why not just murder this person?" Like Magneto or Lex Luthor - classic villains who clearly should have their heads ripped off to save the world a jillion headaches. (I'm against the death penalty but you get what I mean).

by Brundlefly
That was a brilliantly cut trailer. Consider me hyped. I'm not reading or watching anything else on this film till i see it in a theatre. I sincerely hope its the Zack Snyder who wowed me with 'Dawn of the Dead' remake and '300' and not the Snyder who made me want to drill my forehead with 'Sucker Punch'. Either way, this trailer has turned me from a huge pessimist into a fanboy believer. Anyway, Nice work WB, you should get Nolan to shepherd Justice League's tone and drama, it's a tall order but it MIGHT work...

I like this trailer. I think that they even acknowledged the "Smallville" show by choosing a teen which actually looks like Tom Welling. But seriously, this looks good. I think I will like this movie. I Didn't see anything wrong with this. It's realistic. And yes, Pa Kent raised an excellent point, because he's human and he wants to protect his son's secret and most of all, as a human, he may have an intellectual understanding of what his son represents, but cannot comprehend what it is to actually have these abilities. So, that scene does make sense.

The Brandon Routh issue, to me, is something not often discussed...
by Darth Macchio
He had the look, the Clark mannerisms, and so on...but, poor guy, simply doesn't have the voice. i know it seems unfair to judge on something like that but think about it, the guy has a low volume, slightly raspy whisper of a voice. even in Scott Pilgrim, he really didn't enunciate more than a monotone-like 'loud' whisper. it worked for evil ex #3 but can't really work for a character like superman, the least 'mealy mouthed' superhero that has ever existed. not knocking the guy here either...but listen to Adam Baldwin's work on the animated series - Routh simply isn't capable of physically intoning the character with that type of voice which, to me, is what superman simply must have. (in fact, adam baldwin in his early/mid 30s would have been a great superman).

Pretentious, joyless and solemn -- not the right approach for SUPERMAN
by Dursman2000
Everyone here is doing cartwheels over this trailer and I'm going to tell you right now that, what worked for Batman, isn't going to appeal to most audiences when it comes to Superman. Not only that, but between the Reeve movies, and Smallville, people KNOW the origin and the character. Who is this movie for? Grown nerds who worship these characters like their own religion and need to see them treated in HUMORLESS, DIRE, SERIOUS mythological undertones? Good luck selling that to audiences. It failed for Singer -- whose approach WAS pretentious, as much as it paid homage (kinda) to the Reeve films -- and I can see it failing here too. I actually started laughing when I heard the wailing kid doing his vocal over the beginning of the trailer. As much as you all call the Donner film dated, THIS WILL BE TOO in a few years time, for exactly the opposite reasons.

A film where the young Clarke Kent, the future Superman, is told by his adoptive father - a man he loves and respects - that maybe he should have let people die, some of whom were likely his friends, in order to hide his abilities... This is a film that has no substance ? That one moment in the trailer has me in line for a ticket, and I honestly didn't think I would ever say that about this movie. Morbid curiosity maybe, but not actual "interest". Very much looking forward to this now.

Can't say anything excites me about this. I have very little interest in watching a movie about a poor little alien boy who can't fit in. In a way it reminds me of the Flash TV show, they made it like a Tim Burton's Batman movie- but since the Flash isn't Batman it failed. Now they are trying to make Superman like Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight movie- but again Superman isn't Batman, so it will probably fail. If this is an accurate take on the movie, I suppose I'll watch it on TBS one day.

"Clark doesn't belong." This is familiar, unexciting territory. Underwhelming at best.
-
There were some good things in that trailer but having Pa Kent go from "son, you were put here for a purpose" to paranoid "let them die...maybe" seemed contrary to the whole point of the character (ie: to teach Clark what it is like to be human).
-
Is him telling him he can't save EVERYONE . This has always been an underlying theme in Superman stories, comics and even in the movies. From that one moment, you can tell that Pa is trying to point out that there will come a time in his life that trying to save everyone might end up hurting HIM more then anything else. All you people who say it's dumb and not appropriate are not seeing it from the point of view of the character saying it. When Clark becomes Superman, one of his biggest problems is that he cannot be everywhere at once, so there is no way he can always save everyone. PA is trying to prep him for that, OR he is Evil and actually the Eradicator impersonating him after Clarks ship was re-started , starting the brainiac program that was long dormant, infecting Pa Kent with the Eradicator programming. :)
-
He is supossed to represent aliens, what better way than to make him Mexican or Sudanese?

Oh, and the point of my posting all of that goofy stuff from past Superman films
by FlyingToupee
is to remind people how far comic books films have come in the last few years. Once upon a time, we had one movie to look forward to every three to four years, and it was almost invariably a botch job when it was finally released(though I do admit to having a lot of affection for SUPERMAN III and IV). So we should be thankful for what we're getting now, even if every single detail isn't exactly to our liking. Oh, and the trailer is amazing.

But sheesh! He was already in the neighborhood. Why not save the ones that happen to be right there? I've been expecting this to be terrible, and I still think the tone is off, but that was a decent trailer. We'll see.

A lot of aholes here can't get the 70s movies out of their heads and because of that they start saying nonsense.... this trailer has a new music score, kryptonian space ships (apparently), no Luthor, no campiness, action, Supes in handcuffs, at odds with authorities and a different more modern take on the Superman suit... it's all heading in the right direction I would think.

@awepittance - refering to the origin is not the same as "doing an origin story"
by Margot Tenenbaum
Superman was Superman from the beginning of the movie. They showed Clark visiting Smallville, they showed him getting the green crystal from the barn again, they showed him talk to Brando but these were all references to the earlier films. It was not in any way a retelling of how Clark became Superman and then Superman's first adventure. If Peter Parker and Aunt May talk about Uncle Ben's murder in Spider-Man 8, it doesn't mean they're "doing the origin again".

Here's a problem for the filmmakers: who is going to be the villain for Man of Steel Rises? Gus Gorman?
by hank henshaw
They've used up Zod, apparently they want to avoid Luthor (though I'm betting there will be a teaser with his business card, cause they absolutely have to copy everything from Nolan's Batman flicks), Darkseid will be reserved for Justice League. Can anyone imagine guys like Parasite, Bizarro, Metallo, Doomsday, Braniac, etc. showing up in a Nolan movie? None of them even look human! So, yes, the only logical choice is Gus Gorman. Or, maybe Nuclear Man... and probably those are the only other bad guys Nolan, Snyder and Co. can name, because they appeared on movies.
-
Understand the nervousness, but c'mon guys If you've read the comics, if there is one character that can afford the messiah references its big red. Go re watch the last few supes films including returns and you'll find they're all pretty cartoony and lighthearted. Lets give Superman a chance with this tone, plus you want DC to go Marvels route in terms of continuity there needs to be some alignment with Nolan's batman universe. I'm all in for this one in terms of my hopes. In fact I think this is the perfect setup which will connect audiences to his character an see him grow into the Superman we all know and love. I can really see the DC films being about the journey of legends. Batman-check, Superman-check, please let's get Wonder Woman right!!

People whining about Pa Kent, what if he was the same as in 1978?
by performingmonkey
I like that the character is (maybe) going to be altered. It should never just be the effects that get an update. Returns was almost pointless because it was the same ideas as Donner's movie but with CGI and a mopey Supes with kid issues... If you're gonna make a NEW movie make NEW decisions about the characters. Supes as a 'drifter', while being cheesy as hell, is at least something new for a Supes movie.

We can't really blame Hollywood for endlessly rewarming and riffing comic book origin stories...
by Bloodhound
...when the comic book writers constantly do that themselves. And as Alan Dean Foster (amongst others) has said, everybody in Hollywood thinks they're a writer, so everybody wants to put their new spin on the origins of super heroes. Superman Returns was Act III of the origin story from the Christopher Reeves films. . .
by The Atomic Worm
It was a direct sequel to Superman (an origin story) and Superman II (which featured villains from Krypton. . . close enough for me). Even after Bryan Singer was raked over the coals for being uncreative, Zack Synder seems to be taking a similar approach. . . this time we seem to be remaking I and II. Is it that people are overly deferential to the Christopher Reeves films? It's frustrating, though, because I think super hero movies have the potential to be more complicated. . . why do many if not most of the movie plots involving super heroes have to be origin stories? Hopefully one of these interpretations will stick, and we won't end up with a 4th Superman, a 3rd X-Men, etc.

They got Jonathan Kent right in Superman '78. They even got Jonathan Kent right in Smallville, the tv show (of all places). He wasn't in Superman Returns. How can you let a line like Clark: "Am I supposed to let people die?" Jonathan: "Maybe" even be intimated let alone full-blown or fully-blown said in a trailer? Jonathan Kent ALWAYS inspired Clark to do good, to help others, whether he had powers or not. Jonathan was a human, minus any of Clark's/Kal-El's superhuman powers, and yet he still was a good enough human being to instill in a "non-human being" to do good. "Maybe"? "Maybe" Goyer? When I first watched the trailer, and heard that line, heard him say that, I was like what the fuck, confused, and shocked/surprised.
-
Pa Kent is right.
-
works. It's not A modern myth, it's THE modern myth. So it should be treated as such. I'm pretty psyched to see this... although I really think they should stick with the Williams theme for eternity. It should be law. If everyone is watching it going, "Something is missing..." and they hear it in their head anyway, then just use it. It's pretty sad that if they remake Star Wars or Indiana Jones or whatever and don't use the music, just like Superman, we will NEVER, EVER hear something better or more memorable. I still must say, though, that it's ABSOLUTELY FUCKING AMAZING the original Donner Superman got so much right. How did that even happen? They TRULY made a concerted effort to hit all the right notes, show everything people were expecting, and make it believable and treat the origin with respect. They didn't have to try that hard, but they did. Which makes something like Transformers all the more galling to me... there's so little to actually try to get right and it gets NOTHING right. I know... it's based on a cartoon made to sell toys about robots that transform into cars and planes... but still, just made for an easy comparison to nowadays, where there are times when they have all the money in the world, and don't seem to even TRY to include things that people connected with or that made something successful in the first place.

I'm not Freud or anything, but it's curious. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Also, Pa Kent isn't telling Clark that he should have let those kids die. Pa Kent is confused, worried about his son, and his "maybe" doesn't even convince himself
by Adelai Niska
Jesus Christ, he wasn't giving Clark an order, he was wistfully trying to think of a way to keep his son from being chased to a windmill by angry villagers. To say it's some kind of nefarious betrayal of the character is to make a big ass mountain out of a very small anthill. To me, this is 1000x less worrisome than Martin Sheen never actually saying "with great power comes great responsibility."

Pa Kent worries for his son because he knows that revealing his powers leads to a military shitstorm
by smudgewhat
Like any good parent he wants to shield his gifted son from persecution by the ignorant and skeptical (made up largely of aicn talk backers) but he also knows its inevitable Clark will use his powers for mankind b/c he is fundamentally selfless and that is what makes him awesome. :-) And it's also what makes him Superman. They've got the core of the character correct.
-
Everything else looked fine but he is just not right for Pa Kent at all.
-
Since Zack Snyder had nothing to do with the script, I have a fairly good feeling about this one.
-
Seriously though, several things: -the Chris Reeves movies, including the first two, don't hold up well. I blame that on growing up. They are all cheeseball, corny as hell movies. The B/W TV show was more exciting, even though it was formulaic and despite the actor who played Superman had a crew cut and probably drank heavily. -the Superman movie music...whatever....it sticks to the old movies and it can stay there. It fits those movies well by adding--somehow--adding gravitas to some cheesy, cornball flicks. -Luthor as a character works really well. It it the classic brains versus brawn. The thing is the brains were just greedy and hatched cheesy schemes. Let's face it, back during the previous movies, was even one giant robot impossible? No. Luthor could have made crazy diabolic stuff but no he wanted Real Estate. He had the ambition of a Peanuts character. -Origin story. Rocky the Squirrel called, AGAIN!? Let's go back to the old TV show. It retold the origin story every episode. How long did it take? Less than a minute. I'm sure a finely crafted tale of a young nigh-omnipotent gent from Kansas can be told from start to the present. And, there is all the chance in the world that it is a small part of the whole movie. So, I'm not worried about that. The problem I have with this should be the very thing that makes me excited about it: I don't know where they are going to go with this. They've reshuffled the deck that is Superman's story so many times, as recently as last year. It isn't hard to throw the character and his world on that screen. But, they are redefining him. I don't know if that is needed. A movie with a small budget wouldn't bother to define it. A cool ass indy drama would just tell a flat out good story. But, this is a FRANCHISE. Franchises are different, especially when the filmmakers feel the need to set the tone for X number of sequels. I would rather just see a good Superman movie. Let him play intergalactic chess with a two-headed, cross dressing ET. But there better be fists-a-flying!

by Ben_Richards_Bomb_Collar
Jonathan Kent line is slightly worrying, but it's probably got more context in the full movie. I'm sure he ultimately says some inspiring things.
-
For getting that being a good man doesn't mean Pa Kent can't question himself, or have moments of doubt.
-
Not a fan of the "serious" tone, but this is verging towards "epic" tone. That may be what DC needs to contrast with Marvel in the movie world... as Marvel gets more cartoony and cosmic, DC is going the "THUD, THUD" Clash of the Titans/Operatic/Miltonian/Iliad iconic route. if they can pull it off, it will be a cool counterpoise to Marvel, and another great step in this golden age of superhero films. but I can see it going way wrong, too. We'll see....
-
At some point, didn't the comics split Superman in two and gave him Lightning Powers? It wasn't just one story, like that old one from the 60s. He had a mullet and travelled via phone lines or something. Then there was 'Smallville: TV show'. His Super Pout Power was Awesome! The character's been put through the ringer lots of times in lots of ways. Like I mentioned, it is a franchise character. Even if this movie teaches us that why the character finds hope in humanity even as hope is embodied by the character, there better be some fists-a-flying! Any movie character can walk on water, ya know. I'm sure Mickey Rooney did it once or twice. But, a good Superman movie should excite the kids that see it. Should make them want to care about the idea of someone that powerful. It could be a dark story, it could be cheesy, it could be cliched and still work if that is the goal. But, don't shortchange the character. The dude's got awesome abilities. Some say far beyond those of mortal men. (i.e., don't kill him and resurrect him again. Ixnay on the BeenThereDoneThatBefore, eh?)
-
Not bringing back Routh was an injustice. Not allowing the Donner continuity to continue on to better, technically-up-to-date Supes stories and the JL was a commercial mistake. Won't be seeing this flick.

Seriously- Supes is the cornerstone that will determine if DC comics is to pull off what Marvel did with their superhero movies. starting with Iron Man up to the Avengers... They DESPERATELY want this, and if they fuck up Man of Steel, then the whole shebang tanks... Waaay too much is riding on this for the powers that be not to throw everything but the kitchen sink into this. I'll do fine.
-
Clark doesn't have to worry about protecting himself, obviously. But Pa Kent has to worry about himself and Ma Kent. When Clark uses his powers in front of people, it puts both of them in danger. He just needs to be smarter about it.

Full of bitter snarky fucks who seem to know less and less about how movies are made or how Hollywood works. 1. Trailers use temp music from other soundtracks all the time. 2. Superman Returns was not an origin story. It was a flashback. 3. Clark Kent is a confused alien living in a strange world. His angst is juxtaposed with the turmoil of being a modern teen. This story seems to be taking on the ill-effects of that; at least based on what the trailer shows. Not sure why that's such a hard concept to grasp. 4. Um, what Ray Charles asshole didn't see giant ass explosions and super mayhem in that trailer? Or read the many interviews in which Snyder made it quite clear all kinds of shit was going to get real? Okay, got that out. Now, regarding the trailer: fucking sweet.

by wcolbert
I wouldn't bet on it. I'm not a huge fan of Snyder's after Suckerpunch, but there's really nothing to be bitching about in a Superman that isn't all happy-go-lucky boyscout action. I don't know if you've noticed, but when a character stagnates...it dies. We don't live in such an optimistic world as the world Superman first debuted in. We live in a darker, more apathetic world, and one which is no longer so morally black and white as it was in the 30's and 40's, when good was good, Nazis were the bad guys, and that was that. So such a true-blue, good two shoes just wouldn't be realistic in the real world. I get that Superman is a symbol - but only by struggling with darkness and temptation can such a man even remain a hero. If someone is just perfect, they're a deity. If they have flaws, if they're a bit, as you say, emo at times...and overcome it all, THAT is someone you look up to. Superman is supposed to be looked up to, not worshipped. So the tone is fine, and a natural extension of the world environment and the questions a real life superman WOULD be facing. Sometimes...just sometimes...for instance...you're better off letting some die, or killing others, because allowing them to live would only but others in danger in the future. Especially when they're supervilains who cant be so easily imprisoned.

morality doesn't change with the passage of time or changing of style. There has only ever been one moral standard, freedom. You either believe in it or you do not, all judgements flow from that moral principle. You are clearly someone who has never been tested.
-
1978 was the last time we saw the origin on film. It's time for an update. How long did Spider-man take to tell the origin story again? Not even 10 years? So yeah, let's move on. I didn't even notice the undies were gone, and I'm also glad that they are. Someone previous to this nicely shot that complaint down by pointing out that Batman doesn't wear his grey suit w/ blue cape and undies. Anyone with half a brain complaining about that? Some shit just don't work on film. And to all you fuckers wondering still how he shaves the beard, HEAT VISION.

brobdingnag, there has only ever been one moral standard...

I am so not a Snyder fan, but this has a good mojo about it.
-
"Morally black and white" in reference to the old days means that back then, the good guys were ALWAYS 100% good and the bad guys were ALWAYS 100% bad. There was this thing, you see, where Americans thought their soldiers were the best thing on Earth, the epitome of America's strength and generosity and heroism. And then there was this other thing, you see, called "propaganda" which made the bad guys inhuman animals, incapable of any of the feelings you and I experience- empathy or love. And then something like, oh I dunno, the Vietnam War and the Cold War changed all that. And then we learned that our soldiers aren't perfect. We learned that our leaders, our President, was capable of the same acts we condemn our enemies for. THAT'S when morality stopped being black and white. That's when our "moral leadership" was rock solid no longer. That's what happened to us, and that's why the old school Superman doesn't quite work as well in today's time. And I think that's what you missed.

You seem like pretty big Superman fan. I could never really get into him as a character, but this trailer has me interested. Are there any particular runs or miniseries youd suggest I check out?
-
they didn't edit it like the Iron man and Star Trk trailers, with... blondes screaming... hero falling into water (oops - at least he climbed out)... and a villain voice-over mocking us poor saps for not realizing what's coming. Maybe that's for the next trailer. By then I'll be over it. Nah. I'm over it now.
-
I read Superman when I was a kid, had a great big blue tome full of panels over the years, but that's about it. I'm mainly just calling out people for their ignorant statements about the trailer rather than suggesting they don't know Superman like I do. But what I *DO* know is that the Superman comics changed and contradicted themselves multiple times over the years, so I know better than to say something like "this is wrong! It should have been like THIS!" Anyway, I wish I could help you! Glad to see you're interested in boning up on some Superman lore before the film. I myself always wanted to check out "RED SON" which posited a story in which Superman landed in Communist Russia instead of Capitalist America. Very intriguing premise.

by Mark
ALL-STAR SUPERMAN KINGDOM COME (DCU STORY, BUT REALLY A SUPERMAN STORY) SUPERMAN: MEN OF STEEL (RECENT GRANT MORRISON UPDATED VERSION OF SUPERMAN) SUPERMAN: SECRET IDENTITY ("ELSEWORLDS" STORY, SUPERMAN IS ONLY SUPERHERO, BUT EXCELLENT STORY) SUPERMAN: MAN OF STEEL (REBOOT OF SUPERMAN IN 1986; SOMEWHAT DATED, BUT VERY WELL WRITTEN) SUPERMAN: BRAINIAC (GREAT STORY AND ART) SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE (REBOOT OF SUPERMAN IN GRAPHIC NOVEL FORM, CURRENTLY AT TWO VOLUMES, WRITTEN BY JMS OF BABYLON FIVE)
-
I was a Marvel boy myself, leaning towards Spider-Man and the X-Men growing up, though Batman was my DC exception. Supes as a character just wasn't as interesting for me as I grew older. Which is why this movie excites me. Superman is a God among men, and I believe he should feel out of place among us, wanting to fit in. He's one of the best kind of heroes bc he has all this power, and he uses it for good. And he fights the self-doubt that plagues the rest of us, fights the exhaustion he may feel, to *always* do what is right and good. He doesn't give up.

One of the most underappreciated pratical fx is the wire work in the 1978 Superman.
by Brian Hopper
There are shots where you know Reeve is on wires, but the way they did it and the way Unsworth shot it is perfect. For example, there's that shot of Superman after he rescues the little girl's cat, and as the camera cranes down to street level Superman takes off, waves bye to the girl and zooms by the camera. There are others, like when he flies out of the prison yard in the last scene. Maybe my favorite is when he arrives for the date with Lois, and he kind of swoops down onto the balcony ledge with a little dip before his feet land. It's so perfect it almost makes me swoon. The green screen stuff in Superman is obviously less successful, but that wire work kills.

Look I hated Suckerpunch. HATED IT 15 MINS in. You what I did like that Zack made. Fuckin 300 and Watchmen. I thought that owl movie he did was pretty but just not my type of story. The reason Sucker Punch sucked was Zack was allowed to write. Its humbling when you can direct but cannot write. I think he found that out. Directors are not dumb...unless you are George Lucas... they realise thier weaknesses. Same thing happened to Frank Miller when he did the Spirit. He though he could direct... nope. And I guarantee you will never see him direct again. But damn his movie adaptions from his comics are great! Nolan is not what is going to make this movie great. Snyder. THE PA KENT CHARACTER IN DONNER'S MOVIE WOULD HAVE NEVER SAID 'MAYBE' TO CLARK...
by Cody
...but any human father would. Thank God these characters are finally being treated with three dimensionality. You ever have a conversation with your dad when you were a little kid, having never really experienced the dark side of life, where you played the naive idealist, and your dad showed you his cards as the protector of his family, someone who has seen the dark side of life and has just been doing his damndest to hide it from you? Those are the kind of moments that you remember in your life, real human moments. I would rather see a movie about a man who selfishly cares about protecting his family than a man who unrealistically tells his ten year old son that he should have exposed himself to internment, torture, or death for ideals. And as others have been saying, we are seeing Jonathan Kent trying to worl through the situation himself. We don't know where he will arrive. Not to mention that fathers often tell their sons the exact opposite of what they're actually feeling on a pretty constant basis; there is no doubt in my mind that Jonathan is incredibly proud of what Clark did in saving tje children.

codysolo, you summed up how I feel, and I dislike the editing of that comment.
by pete
However, there are a lot of people ou there who feel that that comment was inappropriate. I don't even mind that he made it, but I know that that comment, that word, the word "maybe", was not the only thing that he said back in response to Clark, but the trailer editor(s) made it to where he said something like that to put him in a abd light. Even Clark's comment was mostly likely edited for that snippet, edited for a sound bite, and was also slightly taken out of context, but I agree and guarantee that what you described is exactly how it went down, I agree that what you described is exactly what happened, but you can clearly understand why people would be upset. And I doubt every incarnation of Jonathan Kent before this movie was ideal and would have said "Go save 'em Clark!" even if it meant exposing Clark to good ol' Earth. Other Jonathan Kents weren't written as dumb and absent-minded. You seriously sell them short. I wish this trailer presented that scene in a better light/fashion. Hell, Jon Kent did that on Smallville (the tv show), but he knew Clark was good in Clark's soul and being and told him to be careful, i.e., "maybe". I have more rants/issues with this movie, and it ain't the word "maybe".
-
Although Shannon's Zod looks like he is ready to take part in a fashion show. I must admit, the origin parts are pretty pointless - it's been done already, time to move on. This might be a redemption piece for Snyder after the abhorrent and cluttered mess that was "Sucker Punch" - or it could mean another nail in the franchises' coffin - but i'm willing to believe in the former.
-
saying that "We don't live in such an optimistic world as the world Superman first debuted in. We live in a darker, more apathetic world" We live in a fuckin' world where we have a nigga for president, a black golfer, gay marriage, weed is legal on American soil, the fuckin' internet, more interracial dating, and too many, TOO many more examples to name, and yet wcolbert and people like him come up with this "the world wasn't as bad then as it is now" bullshit. Fuck outta here. It was "WORSE" in the 70's, when the first movie came out, FAR FAR "FAR" worse in the 30's when Superman debuted, and you wanna talk about some "black and white" shit, with no grays in the middle? I'll tel you what's black and white, this George Bush-esque mindset that "you're either with us or against us" if you don't like a movie, or if you do like it. You're a "hater" (I hate that fuckin' word, it played out in the god damn 90's and white people and corny ass blacks kept it goin') if you don't like it, even though I've seen people give detailed, non-harmful opinions about why they don't like something, or you're an ass-kisser if you do like something. In this day and age there's never no midle ground where you can like something, but point out its faults, or even dislike something, but point out its merits. It's either with or against, no middle gound. I'm not on Nolan's dick, Snyder "IS" a hack, I thought Avengers waas going to suck. I was wrong about Avengers, I like dAvengers, I could be wrong about this, but people have the right to voice their opinion without being labelled some bullshit by some guy that wants to eat up every fucking thing he sees on the screen. Ironically Superman was more hardcore when he "FIRST" came out in those "black-and-white" days than he is now, so stop all that bullshit about characters growing stale. People like you, you fake fans, always have an opinion when it comes to a movie, yet none of you, or the majority of you, never read the source that the movie is based off of. Everybody has an opinion on what Superman looks like or should look like, but I guarantee you none of them, or close to all of them, have ever read one Superman comic book, but think they know Superman based off a movie that so drastically alters him that it's not even remotely close to the origin and source material that it was based off of. So go fuck yourself with your "how he used to be" bullshit.

Serious question: Why do Superman - and Batman, come to think of it - wear capes?
by BenBraddock
Superman can fly without his, and for Batman it can only be a hindrance in combat ( eg in the fight scene in TDKR when Bane breaks him, his cape was wet and falling all over him and clinging to him, surely impeding him... why would he wear such a thing?) Same probably goes for Supes - wouldn't wearing an ankle length blanket around your shoulders just slow you down?

Superman, Batman, Gambit, and The Punisher were my favorite heroes. I like the Terrence Malick-ish... reflective/contemplative feel... I just hope it doesn't turn into Emo-Man. I also hope it isn't just a remake of either the Lester or Donner cut of Superman II. I know they're playing the whole General Zod angle again. My favorite Superman villains were Eradicator and Imperiex.
-
That's why they had to set Captain America against a demon Nazi and laugh at his anachronisms and old 40s values the rest of the time. Movie are made to be marketed to a global audience, so the patriotism and US values have to be, well, cloaked. Hence Zod and a planetary, alien menace. I don't know if you thought Nolan could produce a Snyder film and get anything but ponderous seriousness: neither of them is known for their lightness of touch, both of them for a lot of pulverised concrete and glass.
-
Obviously visual style for comics, so it's hard to really justify them in a practical sense. Batman probably so he can keep up the vampiric/wraith style persona he has, basically it's just for the fear aesthetic, to make him look more imposing than just a guy in a bodysuit. As for superman? Fuck knows...because he can?
-
It's an alternate reality, where a man can fly and another man can dress up like a bat and fight crime and not get his ass shot off ten minutes after hitting the streets. You know, fantasy.
-
everyone who pitched a bitch at Superman being an Absentee father, How did you feel about Jonathan "Pa" Kent suggesting that his son let a bus full kids die. I know this is not the OG vision of Pa kent and I'm willing to divorce that vision but, Im just saying that Most iterations would Never have even suggested That A young Clark Kent do such a thing. That's kind of where Superman's "others 1st" persona is derived from.
-
We do realize its a trailer and may not be the entire line from the film. It might go CLARK "should I just have let them die" PA "I don't know, MAYBE you can fly backwards around the earth, thus turning back time, and stop the bus from crashing in the first place dork!" We don't know how it is meant. Anyway, looks awesome. My most anticipated for 2013.

I'm going to lean towards that being 'edited' like that on purpose to get the exact reaction it is from a lot of people. We don't know what he says immediately after that. by aegri_mentis
This is a NEW take on Supes. You have to have some form of exposition as to how the character was formed, and in the case of Superman, his entire character was formed from the conflict in his childhood of hiding who he really was. To say you can present an adult Clark Kent (an actual alien with god-like powers) without seeing the ethos THAT PARTICULAR CHARACTER comes from simply can't be done. How many times have you read a book or watched a movie where you have no vested interest in even the main character, as there is no background on said character? Evidently, Clark is going to be doing battle in his mind about who he is, what he should be doing, and how to get there. You don't think his childhood, especially in his circumstance, needs to be shown? Idiots. The one scene I am particularly curios about is the hospital (?) scene where he locks himself in a closet, and Martha is evidently trying to talk to him through the door or whatever. If that scene plays out like that, it seems she could be the more level-headed and nurturing of the two parents, with Jonathan being possible more reluctant, paranoid, and brusk.
-
It was a stupid throwaway line in Foxx's unfunny SNL monologue that I thought nothing of at the time. I still scan Drudge out of habit but he's definitely been angling to fire up the natives in a Fox News sort of way.
-
It goes along with Jor-el's "Don't interfere" message from the original. Superman could inadvertently end up saving a future serial killer that was on the bus.

Give the guy some slack. When Clark asked if should let those kids die, Pa Kent didn't scream to the heavens "Yes! Let the lil' bastards die!" He said maybe with a heavy heart. If people realized that this boy was an alien with powers how long before the government or some other entity swooped in and took him off to be dissected or turned into some brainwashed killing machine. I see Pa Kent being a Dad and wanting to protect his son.
-

m6y - GOOD wire work is never appreciated because it's good!
by Nintendarth
My personal favorite wire work moment comes in the film HOCUS POCUS of all things, a scene when all 3 witches land from flying on brooms and walk inside a building in one long shot, thus conveying the illusion no wires were used. It's a subliminal moment but it's awesome.
-
You miss a key element. It's not about who's president or who's a golfer or who gets to date or marry whom. It's about how people feel about each other. There was, at one time, a recognition in America that we were all Americans working together to be Americans - and people who were -bad- people (that's quote marks since they won't let you do quote marks here) were just crazy, or ignorant, or misinformed, or criminals. But they were still Americans. Now, people see someone drowning and giddily pull out a cell phone to record it for later posting and maybe to win a prize. Some even laugh. That's what's darker and more evil. And it's very, very evil. And it's the side that won.

Superman is a big deal to me. When Zack Snyder got hired I thought it was a deplorable choice. He makes movies that you watch once and maybe enjoy their retarded flare. Not movie you ever care about and watch over and over. He's an incredibly deft, but innately modern visual guy, but I always thought he should be a second unit director or an effects director, because he just doesn't seem to be able to work with actors. It's like he just tells them to pose. It's like he's playing with action figures. Which has an appeal, but a limited one. As much as I love Robert Rodriguez, he's to blame. If it weren't for Sin City we'd never have gotten this inane shot-for-shot comic adaptation thing, which just doesn't work. A good story is about the characters and the vibe and that stuff, which doesn't translate if you just copy panels and pose people. This is a pretty good trailer. Its too originy and too somber, but those are choices. Superman is a metaphor for a shit-ton of different things and when you make a film adaptation, you have to pick a few of them. They obviously went with self-discovery and acceptance. And that's exactly what Singer did. So it looks like we're getting a retread of Smallville and the 78 origin with a lot of the what do my parents say/growing up and figuring out life. And we're also getting a retread of the superman-as-outsider. Though, we have to remember that from the trailer for Returns it looked like we were getting another origin, but it turned out to be a flashback and barely in it. So origin screentime is unknown for this one, but its certainly dominating the advertising. What's good is that they seem to have also added the WMD metaphor. Where, as a being of great power, he can be used/abused for good/evil. This has always been integral to Superman, obviously, but they're probably really going to show us the societal fear involved as opposed to just Supes' personal choices. Why they made this choice and didn't include Lex, though, is weird. To me Lex would be best as humanity's defender against the "threat" of superhuman aliens. "Birthright" fans are probably happy. We get grumpy and conflicted Pa. We get Clark traveling the world. I didn't like either of these aspects of Birthright. Again, choice. But the bad sign is this is looking exactly like Batman Begins. I know you're thinking HOW IS THAT A BAD THING, but its cookie cutter filmmaking, and indicates that WB/Goyer/Nolan are going with a formula that works and not really crafting a project that they care about. I'm betting now we'll get a Luthor tease at the end like we got the Joker card. Superman depends so much on the likability of the actor. Reeve knocked it out of the park and people love the shit out of those movies even though they really do have some dumb moments (can you read my mind?) And it's also why Smallville lasted as long as it did. Welling was very believable and likable. Cavill to me is pretty forgettable. And while nobody's forgettable in a Superman outfit, he was absolutely one of the boring things about Immortals. Rourke and Zeus were the interesting characters. So we'll see. More good: I've been a long time red underwear supporter. But I barely even noticed them missing. More bad: plenty of other suit design issues to bitch about, like the basketball texture over EVERYTHING, even the logo and boots. As well as the tight collared heavy/dark cape. That's fanboy shit, though, and doesn't really matter. He still looks like Superman. To everybody bitching about the origin again and to everybody defending it because it's a "new take" and "for kids." Kids don't see screen characters like adults do. Kids look at cool things like superheroes with awe and reverence and aspiration. How many kids saw Avengers? tons. How many of them didnt know the first thing about Hulk but loved him anyway? also tons. I used to play the X-Men arcade game, before I ever read X-Men. I had no idea who all the characters were, but I loved it. That shit was tits. Ghostbusters is my favorite movie, but I watched the cartoon and played with the toys and played pretend in the park with my friends (I was always Winston) way before I ever saw it, and the mystery and discovery of finally learning the source and the origin was fascinating. Kids don't need origins. If they care they'll find out, then they'll be the one at school who actually knows and it'll be even more special. Kids who went and read some comics will tell their friends and the stories will spread and imaginations will be ignited and the stories will change as each kid imagines it differently. The myth will evolve as myths are supposed to. And "new take" doesn't mean explain everything. Most good stories leave some mystery. The current origin-obsessed hollywood is getting on my nerves a little bit, but its not make-or-break type stuff. More good: The action stuff looks cool More bad: The action stuff looks totally 2012 and will be outdated as hell in 6-8 years. The best thing about this preview: Pa Kent saying "maybe." Not because of what it says about the character, but because it looks like Costner is actually acting his ass off. If a dedication to acting permeates the film? good. excellent. very un-snydery. It really boils down to this: Is Cavill going to be convincing? Is the story going to be engaging? Is Snyder going to make a solid movie? If they can hit all yeses, we'll get a great one. But so far, because of track records, I remain undecided and unconvinced.
-
Hocus Pocus shot. I love stuff like that, when the filmmaker knows everyone will be looking for the wires, so you mess with their expectations a bit.

I like the trailer and if this new movie has the same impact to my kids like the 1978 one had to me... that would be awesome!!! Hope they nail it.

...with a checklist of items to hit and expect to enjoy yourself. We've rationalized and dogmatized things, and what for? This looks like a perfectly fine version of the superhero. I enjoyed Superman Returns, especially the plane crash sequence. But really it's explicitly the continuation of a previous generation's Superman. This is a new generation's Superman. Yes, they're going to redo the origin story, but if you're going to reboot something, that's somewhat necessary. It's a matter of cosmogony, control over the universe of the story. You start from the beginning to make it your story to tell. So, what do I see? Apparently Clark Kent survives something he shouldn't have been able to survive (wreckage around him in the water). As a youngster he has sensory overload problems, which is consistent with Superman's super senses. As far as Snyder goes, I'm wary of him, but that's no reason to dismiss a film out of hand. We see what he does with it. As for pretentiousness? Superman is a hero who wears his heart on his sleeve. Why shouldn't the movie?
-
I don't get the purist argument in relation to comic books. If you really follow comic books you'll notice that Superman's origin and character has been tweaked over the decades. Until very recently, Birthright was the most revolutionary re-write of the backstory and from the images in this trailer, they clearly borrowed a lot from that (along with secret origin by Geoff Johns). As much as I loved the Donner film from my childhood, it is seriously dated and considering comics reboot their beloved characters from writer to writer, I don't even have a problem with a reboot on film. The most intriguing thing about the trailer is how it looks more like a Terrance Malick film than a Snyder film. Can't wait!
-
you'd think Malick made the first movie ever and this is the second movie ever the way people keep bringing that up.
-
...of eyes closed for prolonged time that then suddenly open and stare into the camera! That's sooooooooo badass! Second only to yet ANOTHER shot of a crouched figure with a fist planted on the ground, head down. Those are only the two biggest cinematic cliches in the past two decades, let's see how many more Snyder can squeeze in.
-
Returns was a misstep from the uniform to most of the cast to the storyline to trying to channel donner/reeve and didn't have any fun. I prefer the tone of the old tv series, at times fun, at times serious but superman/clark understood his place in the universe. None of this stupid, Spiderman/Batman-like I don't understand my indentity garbage.
-
Superman's suit is a precious(yet near indestructable)piece of his all but lost Kryptonian heritage, not worn for any practical advantage. Removing the cape would be like removing the shield itself;besides what is he going to do, make an invincible curtain?

Villain for a sequel? Bizarro or Brainiac would work just fine.
by Royston Lodge
A PROPER version of Bizarro could work just fine (as opposed to that Nuclear Man monstrosity). Bizarro's never been portrayed properly in live-action, and it would be great to see WELL-DONE Bizarro make-up on Cavill. Also, Brainiac is almost TOO easy to do. The obvious way to do Brainiac is to just make him a Skynet rip-off. Even with all his powers, how would Superman defeat a decentralized AI infecting all of the Internet? The problem with Brainias isn't the look. The problem is that it would be really hard to write a script with a 'realistic' setting where Brainian can be plausibly defeated by Supes alone, without the help of the Justice League (and particularly without the help of The Atom), unless they turn Supes into some sort of SuperHacker.

That John Williams version of the trailer doesn't work at all, but other parts from the Williams score could work.
by Royston Lodge
The uplifting tone of those parts of the Williams score clashes horribly with the scenes of destruction. However, that doesn't mean one couldn't do a good trailer using Williams' music. One would simply have to take cues from some of the sadder or more surreal parts of the movies, like when Glenn Ford dies, or when Supes turns back time, or the scenes on Krypton.

Regarding the costume: I assume this movie will attempt a plausible explanation for where it comes from.
by Royston Lodge
Maybe they'll do the old 'it's made from materials from the spaceship' origin, or maybe they'll do the new 'Kryptonian armor' origin. Either way, I'd be surprised if they don't address the origin of the costume at all. I just hope it doesn't materialize magically from the Fortress of Solitude. That would be lame.

Amy Adams is 38. A perfect age. What are you guys 13? Margot Kidder was 30 when she was LL. The thing I found wrong with Brandon Routh is that he looked more like Superboy. Otherwise he was fine but he just looked too young for Clark Kent ( who's supposed to be a fully mature man Routh was 24 ). There's nothing wrong with youth it's just that I get tired of seeing shows where someone is supposed to be a professional with years under their belt and they haven't been alive long enough to have achieved that ( as in early 20 something ).
-
26. At least past 25 when your brain is fully formed and you're considered a grown adult. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=124119468 However he looked 30.

not sure what all the fuss is about..."look another angsty broody and misunderstood superhero.. how original". I Hope is not 2 hours of a moody superman suffering, whining and looking for any excuse to quit, or that it ends with some "anybody can be superman" pretentious nolan crap....
-
Hell of an idea for this site. Give it 15 years.
-
because if gives a sense on movement when you draw him. You can draw the cape is so many ways it helps add drama to the page. Imagine a superman comic with out it. Pretty boring looking. Imagine a a movie without out one. Same thing. A man who can fly looks way better flying with a cape blowing in the wind. Other then that it serves no purpose at all. It is Superman's most important visual element.
-
I hope you do! I love the trailer. I can't wait to see a complete new Superman movie including the whole origin part. This movie should not only work for people who know Superman... this movie has to work for everyone including young kids who maybe never have heard about Superman before! When you can make the next generation of kids make believe a Man Can Fly... then this movie has done everything right... you have done everything right. What I loved about the 1978 movie btw is that Superman didn't fight a supervillain with powers... instead he had to fight Lex Luthor... a evil minded human being. I love this! I hope using ZOD in your movie isn't making it to fantastic because not using a supervillain in the 1978 movie was part of the "magic" of Superman himself. New movies, like the Tobey Spiderman 1 for example are showing the origin of Spidey while parallel showing the creation of the supervillain (Green Goblin). That's not very realistic and it always hurts the movie. I'm waiting for a movie with characters I can really care about without some silly explanations. It should be set in our world, so we can get this "WTF" feeling, while watching the movie. If things are too far away and silly the movie can still be a fun blockbuster but it will not be the awesome hit it could be... which is sad. Superman deserves a realistic take on it and not the typical comic nonsense like most of the other Superhero movies have. Looking forward to the movie because the scenes in the trailer really gave the feeling this one can be the right one... :)

RE: So- three batman movies, Bruce Wayne disappears... Superman movies... justice league with reinvented Robin working with Superman... no bullshit kids' stuff... Nolan's take on everything... then DARK KNIGHT RETURNS in about 15 years
by KGBosh
Not bad, but I was thinking it'd be cool if JGL came back as Batman w/ Bruce mentoring. Maybe have Bruce cameo at the end of MOS saying there's someone he thinks he should meet. World's Finest or JL starts w/ JGL as Batman, w Bruce behind the scenes. And since I think Superman/Batman in comics is as much Clark/Bruce as anything, i feel Bruce needs to reclaim the mantle. Maybe JGL gets fucked up or something, Bruce gets stem cell cartilage transplants or whatever and becomes the Bat again. Bruce and Supes saves the day.... By the end of the movie it's Cavil Supes, Bruce Bats, and a recovering JGL looking to become Nightwing. They should definitely do World's Finest before JL. Too many characters to introduce. WF would pair up just fine against Avengers 2. It's Superman and Batman that put asses in seats, not Wonder Woman or Jone Jonez or whatever the hell he's called.
-
....he was in Supes 4. Not the Nuclear Man abomination mind you, but a shitty version of a clone that preceded him. Ended up on the cutting room floor. Its in the cut sequences on the DVD...it was a fucked attempt and he wasn't all backwasswards looking with a #1 on his chest speaking like Hulk but it was there.... Actually, Superman coming to terms with who he is in relation to the world is a good idea. This taken from a comics reader perspective...we know he can do all the amazing shit, and to get to that you'd expect SOME SORT OF FUCKING CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT before he adopts Earth completely. I got a bit of 'All Seasons' in that trailer, the collection that came out a few years back, told from the perspective of Supes coming to terms with who he is and what he is capable of...and his parents knowing he is capable but still worrying about their son. Humanizing the son of Krypton could work and could give us an incarnation of Superman that is more than just a god among us (which he fucking is). I'd rather they shitcanned the whole Justice League flick and went with Kingdom Come as a talkbacker mentioned earlier. That comic can incorporate EVERY last DC hero without the need to give each and every one long ass back stories. It is almost like the Iliad of comic books, and done right would keep DC in a more mature realm that has the potential to depth charge Marvel's more light hearted and two dimensional takes on their properties (though I do enjoy them just as I do their comic counterparts, as a form of escapism without nitpicking every fucking inch of the flick).

Does everything have to be dumbed down to utter and total simplicity for some of you retards? Damn.

I wanted to do the same thing for my superhero suit but when me Ma gave me my baby blanket and we tested it prior to cutting and sewing, we had to stop. I was pretty short as a baby - definitely under 2 feet tall. Yes, I was still awesome; but yet, I was short as a baby. I clearly remember the blanket being very big which is probably because I was baby-sized (being a baby and all at the time). plus, it was an awesome plaid color pattern - I've never seen a superhero with a plaid cape have you? Grown up (ahem), I'm 6'1" and that baby blanket barely went past my shoulder blades much less even half-way down my back. The effect just wouldn't be the same I think. People would think I've got a paper-towel dispenser on the back of my head. It'd be a hassle at restaurants and the like. And forget ever going to a bar-b-que. Plus, how would it look during flight? A blurry, manic-flapping, buzzing chaos? We're talking supersonic speeds here, people.

Did you see that Iron Man 3 trailer? There's after images scorched into the walls...part of me kind of hopes they deal with the fallout of the invasion in IM3. Maybe driving Tony to drink, I dunno, the Marvelverse is so convoluted I forget which direction they are moving in sometimes. Avengers was a good popcorn flick, but I completely agree with the lacking in reaction to the invasion. It was visually appealing, fun, and let me escape for two hours (which really, is what a movie should fucking do) but , like classic Whedon, it lacked substance.
