New This Week
A funny new sitcom from 25-year-old screenwriter-director-actress Lena Dunham (“Tiny Furnture”) and producer Judd Apatow (“Bridesmaids”), “Girls” follows twentysomethings trying to ride out The Great Recession in Brooklyn.
Dunham’s co-stars include Jemima Kirke (“Tiny Furniture”) and famous offspring Allison Williams (daughter of newscaster Brian) and Zosia Mamet (daughter of writer-director David). Becky Ann Baker (“Freaks and Geeks”) and Peter Scolari (“Bosom Buddies”) play the Dunham character’s parents.
Apatow doesn’t direct or write the show, but it does feel a lot like “Freaks and Geeks” in that it seems to squeeze a lot of strong comedy out of real-world incident.
And the real here is super-real, thanks to HBO. These girlfriends are so close they take shits in front of each other and even bathe together. There’s also a lot of nudity and pervy sex games and doggy-style fornication.
The pilot also features a hilariously passive-aggressive battle between Dunham’s character, Hannah, and Hannah’s mom, who is determined to cut off Hannah’s financial support now that Hannah is 24 and a college graduate. Hannah doesn’t want to work at McDonalds. Mom, it turns out, is determined to buy a lake house.
If tonight’s pilot doesn’t fry your burger, I encourage you to stick with it. The series gets better as it progresses. Look at all these glowing reviews:
... It's certainly been a long time since I was this beguiled by a set a characters, but "Girls" is one of those rare birds: It's a show that comes to us with its voice, characters and ideas fully formed. …
... it may, in fact, be the best new HBO comedy since "Curb Your Enthusiasm" … As I'm neither a woman nor in my early 20s anymore, I can't speak to how well "Girls" captures that generation of women. But I can tell you that it definitely has a voice, and it's a great one: witty and wise and warm and not exactly like anything you've heard before.
... I can only say: Girls is actually that good. … A handful of you may know Dunham for her 2010 movie Tiny Furniture; Girls captures some of its elliptical indie sensibility, but in a way that’s more structured, with more story and stakes, and–not to overstate the role of co-producer Judd Apatow, because this is mainly Dunham’s creation–but it is in a way reminiscent of the naturalistic, character-based comedy-with-heart of Freaks and Geeks. (With HBO sex and language and a much more urban setting, of course.) …
... worth all the fuss … Ms. Dunham, who made her reputation with an independent, highly autobiographical movie, “Tiny Furniture,” makes great comedy out of her own shortcomings. …
... There is a cool cleverness to the show that is both attractive and off-putting; the characters are flawed and hyper-aware of their flaws, the stories so bent on covering every angle of self-examination that there is no real role for the viewer to play. Which makes watching it an intellectual rather than emotional experience. It is easy to laud the courage and talent behind the piece, to watch with great interest where the show will go, how it will push the artistic boundaries of television. It's more difficult to care about the characters themselves. Obliviously insular in that small space behind the glass, they are essentially incapable of real connection. Which is, after all, Dunham's point. …
The San Francisco Chronicle says:
… Lena Dunham just may be the future of television. If not, she comes thrillingly close with Sunday's premiere of her groundbreaking sitcom … "Girls" represents an exciting moment in television history because, like a handful of other shows (MTV's "Awkward," most notably) it not only makes great use of the medium but has the creative guts to realign it for a new century and a new generation. …
... Dunham has created a superior work of fictionalized anthropology. …
... This time it's not penned by patnernalistic male writers — or gay male writers a la "Sex and the City," with a skewed view of the subject. It's created, written by and starring a self-aware and self-deprecatingly funny young woman who lets us in on the process of mining her mistakes. ...
As funny and creative as her show may be, there's little doubt Girls (**** out of four) will be too explicit, too New York-specific, and too young-and-female-centric to appeal to everyone. But talent will out — and as creator, director and star of this new HBO sitcom, Dunham is clearly a talent to be reckoned with ...
… Welcome, girls. Or more precisely, young women, a breed of defiant bohemian twentysomethings who populate Lena Dunham's brilliantly raw and raunchy Girls, a true breakthrough series ...
… if "Tiny Furniture" filmmaker Lena Dunham's series is in places too mannered, it's also fresh, honest and raw. And if she's not the voice of her generation, as her character tells the folks, she's certainly a voice -- one worth hearing, and right at home on HBO. …
Few series come out of the box as brilliant as Girls does. The new HBO series from Lena Dunham (Tiny Furniture) is one of the most original, spot-on, no-missed-steps series in recent memory. … Like Louie, Girls is shot through with the unmistakable DNA of its creator and it’s impossible to overstate the brilliance of the artistic vision at hand here. …

Might be worth noting the LOTR: EE bluray boxset is $40 bucks
by eveelcapitalist
$39.99 and for any idiot that's wondering yes the goddamn set is in the original aspect ratio. http://tinyurl.com/b8bjtfw

And also the Lightning Deals Amazon will be having Tuesday and Wednesday
by eveelcapitalist
http://tinyurl.com/bdck34u A couple of these I think I've seen cheaper but for anyone that is interested. But that very same Apes boxset is going on sale from 6-10 PST so it'll be a couple of bucks cheaper than it is now. Don't think that Harry Potter bluray set has ever been cheaper. Something like $7.75 per film.
-
I personally know The Fold - the guys who wrote and perform the theme. <p> True Story...
-
Seriously, I buy every one, and I have a bunch of singles that haven't been put into any set yet. I Accuse My Parents, Mitchell, Beginning of the End, etc. Still, seems like we have to be over halfway done with putting the available stuff into box sets. I suppose I could check wikipedia or google, but I'm feeling lazy. Someone else do the work for me

The lowest price ever thing is a joke, Last I checked 32.00 was cheaper than 61.00
by Levi Tinker
The amazon UK set for Harry Potter 8 film collection is only 32.00 U.S. Dollars shipped. thats 4.00 a movie, so please explain to me what universe your in that 61.49 and 7.49 a movie is the cheapest potter has ever been on blu? And further more the U.K. set has 3 bonus discs of features not found in the US set.

UK harry potter movie collection has 3 bonus discs and is only 32.00 US shipped. so much for lowest pricing ever huh?

4.00 a movie trumps 7.69 a movie

The Coen Bros and the Planet of the Apes sets have been 19.99 many times in the last few years.
by Levi Tinker
Seriously these sets have been 19.99 at Best Buy, Frys, and other outlets a number of times over the last 2 years
-
Dec. 11, 2012, 12:11 p.m. CST
Oh and Frys had the US Potter set for 28.99 over thanksgiving WEEK this year
by Levi Tinker
So even The US set has been much cheaper than 61.00

Don't try to say the color wasn't ever fucked up. That shit is documented.

You guys missed out on a better Planet of the Apes Blu-ray set with the original one that had the wider case and awesome hardcover book included
by lv_426
I think I got that one for about $35 two or three years ago during an Amazon sale. Still though, $20 for the entire old school Planet of the Apes saga on Blu-ray is not bad at all.
-
Amazon says $52.99. Thanks for getting my hopes up for nothing.

E.N.G.? Littlest Hobo? Hamilton's Quest?

... it may, in fact, be the best new HBO comedy since Curb Your Enthusiasm
by Kevin Kittridge
BULLSHIT. That title goes go Veep. Unquestionably. Also...I just don't think "Girls" is very good.
-
While I take issue from time to time with Herc's claims of CHEAPEST EVER, I have been watching the LOTR EE BR set's price like a hawk since a week prior to Black Friday. The lowest it ever got was $48.99. $39.99 was my buy price and this is the first time it has hit that low all season at any retailer. Thanks, Herc.
-
In case you missed on Amazon last time. Of course, you could go buy it at Best Buy but then you'd have to pay tax. Amazon is tax free! Yahoo!!!
-
Plus tax!!!!!!!!!! So, it may be pretty much the same price when you factor in taxes and gasoline or public transportation, etc.
-
Mostly, I don't like any of the characters. Except, ironically, for the mom. The fact that she's cutting off the 24 year-old is the best thing she could possibly have done for her. Go get that lake house, mom!
-
You must have broke your Amazon.

Rock, while it was an instore price Black Friday week at Best Buy it was indeed 39.99
by Levi Tinker
I know this because I bought it for someone Black friday week, and pointed several co workers and friends to it as well.I can share a copy of my reciept if you like. It was an instore only price black friday week though, cause Best Buy was using it to counter the 10.00 Extended cut bluray releases that Target had. It was after black friday that it was also added to BB.com and this is amazon matching it. Unfortunately Amazon is more a follower than a leader in terms of low pricing lately.

I'd bet money that now that there's going to be more Star Wars films
by Samuel Fulmer
That we'll be getting yet another Star Wars blu ray set in the future. If you really want this one I'd wait to see if it goes down in price in order to get rid of old inventory and make way for a new set.
-
While every retailer agrees that this indeed was the street date for the In Search Of complete series box set, it appears none of them have it in stock! It is now available to purchase, just don't plan on getting it anytime soon!!! Big time bummer!

If they can bring out In Search Of, maybe they'll release Great Books on dvd
by tangcameo
I watched whole weekends worth of that show. Their take on The Great Gatsby is the best adaptation of the book, better than the 70s Redford version, better than the upcoming musical. So was their War Of The Worlds.
-
It says temporarily out of stock on Amazon, but that's bullshit, they never had it. Regardless of the reviews on the Amazon page, I have seen no evidence that the box set has ever been available. Neither on the original date that the set was due to be released, nor on the revised date earlier this week. Amazon lists the box set as being temporarily out of stock, but I know several people who ordered it only to see that notorious 'we need more time' comment in their account. It really should not be re-listed here again, until we see evidence that someone has paid for and received it. It appears that only those who received it in exchange for a review of some kind, promoting it, or as a gratuity -- have commented on it. Very frustrating.
-
Was very cool. The Enterprise CV-6 was so instrumental to winning World War II, but it doesn't get the recognition that the CVN-65 gets (or got, now that she's retired too.) I'm certain that *THIS* was the carrier that Roddenberry named the Star Trek Enterprise after. It was, after all, the most decorated ship in all of WWII.
-
I bought mine through amazon.ca back when it was supposed to be Dec 4th. They got back to me with a date of the 17th when they will have them in stock. So we will see when Monday rolls around. Never did receive a reply from the distribution company.
-
A few moments ago. There are angels singing above me right now. Happy Holidays !
-
I just received an e-mail from Amazon stating my In Search Of box set is now in stock and finaly shipping with an estimated delivery date of 12/19 (funny that it is in stock now and my Prime membership has free 2-day shipping which I selected, but it will take 4 business days to get here!).
-
Ultraseven is finally available as a complete series?! Excellent news! Even without the "banned" episode (which is not that spectacular), it'll be great to see this awesome series again. Especially without the smirky, not-very-funny TNT dub attached to it.

I guess it pays the bills though
