The hour-long interview “Mel Brooks Strikes Back” hits HBO at 9 p.m. It taught me, among many other things, that Brooks’ Ukrainian-born mother had an Irish accent, so it’s not all stories I’ve heard before. He also tells a lot of stories I have heard before, including his tale of how Jews in the Catskills kept killing themselves by singing “Dancing in the Dark” in the wrong key. I found myself laughing anyway.

A “2000 Year Old Man” clip demonstrates that the young Mel Brooks, at least when wearing a Superman-ish cape, looked a little like fellow filmmaker J.J. Abrams.

Brooks still does a great Cary Grant impression.
