Learn Which SNL Vet Hosts
SNL After Jamie Foxx!!
Martin Short will host the Dec. 15 episode of “Saturday Night Live” with musical guest Paul McCartney.
Last time McCartney appeared on SNL, Dec. 11, 2010, he played only hits from the late 1960s and early 1970s: “Jet,” “Band on the Run,” “A Day in the Life,” “Give Peace A Chance” and “Get Back.”
My favorite bit from the Jeremy Renner show:
DSNLSBFBOATA?:
11:30 p.m. Saturday. NBC.

wow, and here I thought I remembered it being such a huge deal when Pearl Jam got to play 3 of their songs for their April 1994 show (just days after Kurt Cobain's death). Is 5 the record?

theseeker7, I wonder if not all songs are being brodcast but that doesn't seem to make much sense in that setting either
by Proman1984
So yeah, good question.

How the hell is Martin Short even considerd relevent anymore?!?

Plus, there's potential for a Three Amigos reunion. Maybe Lorne owes Steve Martin a favor.
-
don't care about how famous but how funny and Martin Short be funny. Look for his monologue to be singing

When was the last time Short appeared on SNL? Was it the Three Amigos one with Chevy Chase & Steve Martin from the 80s?
by Margot Tenenbaum
Martin Short is a god of sketch comedy. this is huge news
-
OK, he's been relegated to crap like Santa Clause 2 (or was it 3?) over the past decade or two, but from 1981 to 1987 or so, Short was about the funniest MFer on TV. His SCTV work was as good or better than most of the 1970s SNL cast's. And his season on SNL was great, also. Hopefully he can still bring the funny. And I think his last SNL appearance was during a Steve Martin/Alec Baldwin bit at the Five-Timers Club, where Short played a waiter ("still sad"). But that was back in the late 90s, I'd guess...?
-
Maybe I am mistaken.
-
The writing has just been flat, and there's no one really standing out - just a bunch of "pretty good" sketch comedians looking for a good concept.
-
He isn't as relevant as, oh, I don't know, Jeremy Renner, but that guy has more talent and better sense of humor that douche nozzle. I bet all of the young SNL players are pretty happy to be able to riff with this guy. He is like Steve Martin, Tom Hanks, or Alec Baldwin. They're people who get how to be funny. www.nonipplesonthesuit.com

It's not that I think he's not talented, or couldn't hang with this particular cast...
by TheSeeker7
But I just can't help but wonder... why NOW? I mean this really came out of nowhere. He won't be plugging any particular thing, will he? And he's certainly not the kind of personality where they know they can have him on at any random time (even if not publicizing) and it'll go great, like Baldwin or Steve Martin, etc.

I remember some sketch show from the early 90s where Martin Short played Tim Burton as a inarticulate mumbling mess
by Margot Tenenbaum
where was that from?
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RT6mVUdM2Yw skip to 5:20 Hilarious, and the fence costume is actually quite disurbing..

I'll learn their names eventually

Search your feelings. You know it to be true.
-
Or promoting his voice work as the dad from Frankenweenie? Who cares, bring the funny.
-
Said what is factually true and what I was trying to convey but with much more eloquence, grace, and style.
-
One of the In Living Color sketches I remember.
-
After Maroon 5 performed their hit that's based on the Great White North theme song, an SCTV alum is timely. Maybe Martin Short is the closest they could come to Bob and Doug Mackenzie.
-
..he was good and funny back in the day, but he never really kept up with the times and now all of his humour comes off as 'hey, remember when I did this joke in the 80s?' He just never evolved and he's hard to watch now.

Who will be the musical guest if Paul McCartney dies before December 15th?
by cerberus
Paul doesn't look so good. His face looks like it's made of melty wax. It's only a matter of time and he is reaching that point in his career when he is worth more to us dead than alive.
-
And he got his groove back
-
Only a racist could think that monologue was a good idea.
-
I'm pretty sure 2 of them were together in a medley, and he played under the closing credits too. See he really performed 3 times during the show.
-
yikes
-
There's no way a white comedian could have pulled off the bulks of those skits if the joke targets were reversed - there's one thing to make subversive jokes about racism and oppression or even mock PC BS about race, but these just weren't funny and had an ugly undertone to them.
-
What was with all the racially based monologue and skits? Enough with the constant portrayals of black guys as pimps and being ignorant. I know the whole writing staff is white... maybe they should think of bringing in some writers that can make fun of black culture without resorting to pimps and hos type crap.
-
I've been wincing at the whole episode, I mean the man obviously has sketch show experience, why not let him in on the writing too? The whole thing has just been terrible.

And Immortal_Fish, typically, from what I understand, unless it's a comedian or something, the host usually doesn't have much, if any input on the monologue
-
Remember when he referred to Robin Quivers of the Howard Stern show as a "house nigger?" Fuck him.
-
I assume he's not great friends with Lorne. He is one of the hugest sketch and improvisational performers of all time.
-

McCartney KIND of only played 3 songs. Day in The Life and Give Peace a Chance were a medley for the 3rd song. Get Back was over the closing credits and truncated.
by JediRob
It was definitely a lot of songs.
-
3 proper with Arcade Fire, Foo Fighters and Jeff Beck. Then a medley of She's a Rainbow and Ruby Tuesday when Kristen Wiig was leaving. And that pseudo version of Satisfaction during that karaoke sketch.
-
Who was the President?
-
I just saw Paul in St. Louis 4 weeks ago. The man still has plenty of life in him. He played for 3 hours and sounded amazing.
-
Hit-or-miss, as usual. Was good to see Foxx back in his natural sketch-comedy element, but his "How black is that?" opening was a little cringe-worthy to this middle-aged white guy. The opening was so-so, but Hader's Boehner made me laugh a lot even if the material didn't warrant it. The two game shows were OK (Dylan McDermot or Dermot Mulroney was funny until Mulroney actually showed up and the skit stopped in its tracks... or maybe that was McDermot???). Tree Pimp was a pretty funny concept with marginal results. J-Pop America Funtime Now has kinda run its course. Bring back What Up With That?!
-
old music, a few tracks hastily selected from the pool of hundreds of the best songs ever given to the human race.
-
He semi-retired to raise his kids who were motherless. Kind of like John Lennon but Yoko didn't die. ;) At least that's what I read somewhere.

sharpie, 'from what I understand, unless it's a comedian or something, the host usually doesn't have much, if any input on the monologue' How did you reach that understanding? Do you know for certain, or did you hear it from a friend who is dating a relative of the lady that used to babysit Jercules? At any rate, Fox fancies himself a comedian according to his Today interview. So according to your logic, he's covered or is making the claim in order to provide himself with cover. http://tinyurl.com/be2pq69 Either way, he's still a racist.
