Details about the EXORCIST: THE VERSION YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN Release!!! Very Good News!

Published at:  May 18, 2000 7:56:35 AM CDT

Right after I arrived in Austin today, and as I was paying for my salad, my Dick Tracy began a singing, and I turn on the screen to see Billy Friedkin's smiling face to greet me. Being a tad shocked I made a smiley face and said hello. Turns out that he had just gotten the news from the Warner high ups that this special super duper amazing edition of THE EXORCIST, with all sorts of fantastic added material, will be playing at a theater near you beginning on SEPTEMBER 22nd, 2000. Billy tells me that it will be opening up on 400 to 500 screens, and if performance goes as well as expected, Warners plans on having the film on 2000 screens by Halloween. Billy wanted me to tell all of you, that he feels that we (you and me) made all the difference in getting this done. It seems that Warner Brothers is going to kickstart a huge promotional campaign to support the film, and that this is going to be pretty darn big.

As for me, I can tell you that simply... You have got to see this when it plays at a local cineplex. You must see the film in the absolute best sounding theater you can find. You MUST see the film while wearing a crucifix (better safe than sorry). So... pat yourselves on the back, and hope and pray this does well enough that Warners gives SUPERMAN, which is getting some serious fixing up treatment, the same hoopla. If nothing else... We got this immaculate new theatrical experience of THE EXORCIST to a theater near you.

Ain't it Cool?

    A new age upon us!

If The Exorcist does well enough in the theatres, and Warners decides to get its head out of its ass and release the suped up Superman, then this has to be the greatest time in history to be a film geek. With a definate money maker on their hands as these two movies are, then we just might be reated to more wide re-releases of classic films. How kick ass would it be to see The Godfather, Ghostbusters, or a longer cut of Batman on the silver screen again. GEEKS REJOICE!

"you're gonna die up there..." (dribble dribble)

    by narf

Yes! It IS cool! That is, until my fellow talkbackers start ripping it apart. It's nice to see that a director can still love a film over 25 years later. Y'know, Lucas may have been on to something when he said that films aren't finished- They're abandoned. I say hurray! If The Exorcist playing in theaters stalls the release of another bad Disney family film, then bring on the revivals!

    There is more material?

    by stuedwards

The Region 2 DVD is pretty comprehensive, with different endings and the infamous 'crab walk' scene - I can't see there's much more to show! Hope I'm proved wrong, tho'

    Even Better Idea

    by joseok

Hey Warner Bros (Time Warner Inc), I have an even better idea. If you plan to release The Exorcist again with new, never seen before footage, why not do the same for Eyes Wide Shut? Or will we have to wait 27 years to see that too?

    marketing

    by propaganda

If the powers that be are smart here, they will utilize that original creepy-as-hell flash image trailer (included on the DVD and VHS Special Edition releases). That is one of the most unforgettable teasers I have ever seen, and it would certainly cause people to take notice if attached to all the upcoming summer blockbusters. Start the buzz.

why bother? Isn't the original good enough?

    by reg

I mean that, why bother adding extra footage to a film which is just fine as it is?
I'm not convinced by this "make it longer = make it better" argument. The reasons for stripping out the spider walk make perfect sense, and it looks cheesy anyway (lacking anything like the ambiguity of much of the rest of the film) so leave it as a DVD special feature and little more.

    Extra Scenes!

    by pilcrow

I just hope they add the scene where Billy Friedkin slaps the priest in the face to improve his "acting."

The one hope, the ONLY hope...

    by essemtee

...the only hope for Warner's to get some credibility back anyway, for God's sake! The Exorcist AND Superman, all spankin' new lookin'? Damn, I say!! If you simply can't wait for this upcoming re-release to find out what some of those new scenes are, read the novel! Regan's checkup at the the doctor's, Karras listening to a tape of Regan talking to her dad, a better looking Spiderwalk scene, etc. Anyhoo, If this news of Harry's actually happens, I'll be there opening night, wearing my lucky Exorcist t-shirt! Hmmm, maybe I'll bring along that exotic dancer I might a few weeks ago, she's the only person I met in Toronto who knew about this new version! Bring on the smelling salts, people. The demon's coming back!

    by datagod

Come on! There must be better movies to spruce up than this satanic stink bomb!

Yeah, it scared me. But so did my week old underwear. And I don't need to see any more green puke being sprayed on priests either.
