Writer announced on muthereffin' TRON 3 YO!
Hey folks, Harry here and Hollywood Reporter has made my night. Not only did the lovely Borys Kit just get off the phone with me, yeah, we're sweet on each other. It goes back years. Love his sis. Meanwhile as he was talking to me, he was launching this juicy tale of geek euphoria.
Now, we here at AICN have known for quite some time that work was progressing on TRON 3. Bruce Boxleitner had said so. And when TRON says it will happen, we listen!
The Screenwriter is Jesse Wigutow. Now that's not the greatest news to me. He wrote on ERAGON - without credit which was one of the most exceptionally flaccid fantasy films to ever punish filmgoers. Since then he's been at work on a host of things that we've yet to see. The most interesting is PETER AND THE STARCATCHERS for Gary Ross. He's also written a script for the remake of THE CROW, which is being directed by F. Javier Gutierrez, who directed that amazing little indie for IFC, BEFORE THE FALL, which you should absolutely look out for. As for TRON 3, I'm hoping for the best... But I'm more enthused to see that Joseph Kosinski is officially back. Now announce DAFT PUNK's return.
Yes, TRON 3! BNAT weeks always rule with movie news. What next?

Don't know about the writer. But I'm VERY happy to hear Joseph Kosinski is coming back.

That really was a beautiful film. And Daft Punk's score was THE BEST of the year. I listen to it every time I mow the lawn.

Or you don't know what Jesse Wigutow has worked on...i'm going to go with you

Just a great and solid film as a follow up to an original that was somewhat underwhelming. Any Sci-fi movie that the Mrs. will request to watch is thumbs up in my book.

A shit I could not give. After Legacy, which was the cinematic equivalent of passing a kidney stone, T3 is about as exciting as a sulfuric acid enema.

Dense. Silly. Messianic. T2 was the supermodel of Sci-Fi films: beautiful body, no brain.

I literally felt like walking out of the theater half way through. Hedlund was a dipshit of the highest order.
-
Harry, are you fucking with me? That movie was fucking horrible. You make it sound like he wrote fucking Inception. Oh, wait. -Namaste-
-
One of the things the original TRON had going for it was Wendy Carlos' bizarre-as-fuck avant guarde score. Haven't heard anything like it short of a Scott Walker album; really did sound like music from another plane of reality. Daft Punk sounded like Hans Zimmer, a form of music all too common on THIS plane of reality.
-
Bit taken aback about the writing though... According to IMDB, his four credited titles are 2006 - The Prince (TV movie) 2003 - It Runs in the Family (written by) 2002 - Sweet Friggin' Daisies (short) 1999 - Ugly Naked People (short) I presume he has written way more than this because back when I was trying to get into screenwriting, it was said you might get one out of every ten scripts sold or produced. If Disney is going to hire this guy to take on a high financed film, I'll trust that this guy is in fact a great writer but that much of his work is still in development limbo... which is normal in this industry. Anyway, looking forward to the next film and crossing my fingers that it will be amazing.

Will it Be Empty Stupid Fun-to-Look-At Garbage Like The First Two?
by Crow3711
Get real people. I appreciate the first films place in geekdom, but neither are good films in the least. Legacy in particular was complete shit.
-
Is TRON so beloved a franchise that it needs to continue? They'd be better off just rebooting it as a kid's Saturday morning cartoon, then hoping it can gain popularity from there. This current arc is a waste.
-
Tron 2 was awesome, saw it IMAX 3d and there is no other way to watch it. It had a Wizard of Oz vibe when he went from the real world to the computer world (and they catch him on the street), with Daft Punk's music kicking in, that 15 minutes was some of the best fantasy ever caught on film.
-
Seems like they didn't bother with one of those on the last one.
-
It's one thing to pass judgment if you have. But if you haven't, then you are being incredibly irresponsible. Folks in the movie business read your blog. They listen to your opinions. Slamming a writer publicly has reverberations. If you want to gauge a screenwriter's talent, look at his/her scripts before they were tinkered with by the studio and other other writers.
-
since the film came out. great to listen to while working, running, and just about any activity in the world. just a perfect perfect score.
-
Am I going to have to watch 'Eragon' now to get a hint of how bad this Jesse Wigutow's work is?
-
Both TRON and TRON Legacy are misunderstood films. Yeah, they LOOK like nothing but an FX-feast, but dig a bit deeper and you'll see they have real meaning underneath. (I could do with a better actor in the lead though. Hedlund wasn't very good.)
-
Wigutow didn't write Eragon; he wrote on it, without credit, which means there could be nothing of his work left in the movie. Don't judge a screenwriter until you've actually read his/her drafts.
-
was that the kid had a PK Ripper that late in the 80s. and for fucks sake... Daft Punk is so saccharin. let us get music along the lines of Aphex Twin or µ-Ziq... maybe the two can make a sequel album as Mike & Rich for the soundtrack.

-
all the reviews said how good the young jeff bridges looked. what crap, cg still cannot pull off realistic human texture, its too complex for a computer to program life. it looked too perfect and smooth, not real
-
So I fell asleep during the middle 100 minutes, seriously. What happened? Cuz I didn't seem to miss much, and the end became what all those sci-fi movies became in the 80s, the big buildup to the lightshow and things collapsing and a big brouhaha that didn't quite make sense and... kinda felt like a big budget version of Watcher in the Woods or something. I was glad to see them bring Bette Davis back to life along with Jeff Bridges.
-
These days if a film gets a sequel it's usually announced right after opening weekend. Took them two years to make a decision?
-
I don't expect any of them to be good, but why should they even be? The original Tron was a complete product of the times. Tron 2 was retarded but I had fun watching it i guess. I will go see a third one if I'm not too busy drinking.
-
It was a 1.30+ hour music video. Its the only soundtrack I have from the past 10 years they were robbed for best score. But the movie could have been alot better.
-
Amazing that they are giving the same hack that directed Legacy the chance to do more damage with the third one. One of the biggest flaws in Legacy was the directing (and plot) which turned the movie into a turgid sequence of exposition scenes. Now we are going to sit down and have a long, needlessly talking scene about exposition that we should just show you. Now we have a little bit of meaningless action. Can someone tell me why they thought Daft Punk's score was outstanding?
by Greggers
There was nothing innovative about it; in fact, it was pretty derivative, not only of their own work, but the work of other (movie) composers. It didn't create a unique sense of atmosphere. Close your eyes and it could have been the soundtrack to a Skinemax-type flick from the 80s. Daft Punk can make interesting music, but I think their work in Tron was pretty boring and not worthy of the love this message board is giving it.
-
yuck yuck
-
A bunch of pretty lights and some neat sounds. I can't say I hate it but I damn sure know it wasn't something I was enthralled by. Bring on the sequel machine though. I can still remember Garrett Hedlund starring in the awful Four Brothers and most reviewers running him down as a no name even alongside a cast that included the likes of Mark Wahlberg and Andre Benjamin.

by David_Denmans_Beard
It's the exact opposite of what any person with the bankroll to make it happen should do - namely giving a kid empty praise about the book he's written and getting it into wide publishing distribution in hopes of it becoming the next big moneymaking franchise.
-
tron 2 was misstep. as phategod2 said, legacy was a daft punk video, although it wasnt very good. actually it just wasnt very groundbreaking visually or aurally. (and it kind of needed to be). tron 3 needs no daft punk, and daft punk needs no tron 3.

Tron Legacy was probably one of the biggest disappointments of my life.
by Randy
The original Tron had little plot and character either, but I think it had incredible potential for a great film. The game is probably my favorite arcade game ever, and the overall aesthetics of Tron are truly amazing. The trailers, hype and potential of Legacy had my so excited, and the visuals really did end up delivering. Sadly, the story was horrible, the acting was mediocre, and nothing was memorable beyond the visuals and score. Sadly, it was like a beautiful girl who is painfully boring.

Tron Legacy had an interesting premise that wasn't really fulfilled by the actual movie
by lv_426
Basically the idea of a human going into a detailed virtual world and living in there while his real body disappeared from the real world. It might have been better if it had not been tied into the whole Tron universe. Think of all the cool stuff a writer or filmmaker could explore with the idea of a world changing tech like the grid in the Tron films, especially the state of it in Tron Legacy. If such a technology existed, tons of people would choose to leave behind their flesh and enter a world where they can be nearly immortal and god-like. It would cause ripples in social, financial, and tech circles. Then of course the angle of Clu and his followers wanting to exert some control over the real world that exists beyond the grid was interesting. Now, I did enjoy Tron Legacy for what it was, however, I think it had much greater potential. Instead we got a kind of routine father-son Hollywood sci-fi/action flick with cool visuals and a Star Wars homage at the end. Actually, Tron Legacy felt like Star Wars crossed with The Matrix in the setting of the original Tron.

Tron Legacy is the best looking and sounding SF movie since Blade Runner.
by Gary Makin
Fucking fact.
-
The aesthetics, the music, the production design. Man that is a sweet looking and sounding movie.
-
False. Children of Men is the most beautifully shot, scored, sounding film since Blade Runner and just so happens to be an amazing film to boot.
-
Completely think they and Kosinski made the flick, and I actually liked it a decent amount, especially on rewatches, despite the messy and average third act.
-
Loved the design and look of it. It just lacked something engaging. However I am really glad they're making a sequel!
-
... "one of the most exceptionally flaccid fantasy films to ever punish filmgoers" was exactly how I would describe Tron Legacy. I fell asleep 3/4 way through. Not exactly how I expected a movie I'd waited 20 years for to pan out. It made the same chronic mistake every reboot / sequel makes these days; "Let's be dark and edgy". Which in almost every case equals = boring bollocks.

-
took people's word for it. I did hear a bit of the soundtrack, thought that sucked.
-
and was surprised by it right from the start. Saw it in IMAX - My first experience with the format. Not being an advocator of all things three dimensional, i was pretty taken with this movie - that to some degree was conflicted with style and substance - but ultimately gave is a good ride...And also good to see that that Jeff Bridges was not so inadvertantly ignorant to a fantasy picture - that, like the original - could have deflated himself as an actor, and that you never want to revisit (Tom Cruise from the underrated "Legend" comes to mind). I think personally Tron has already had it's duration, so a third act might be a struggle. The possibilty of Bridges returning, and the dance inspired tweakings of Daft Punk might be a defunct possibility to some degree.

Also, On the subject of disney sequels to movies that underperformed in the 80s ....
by Father
Disney should make a new willow movie ! The first movie was very self contained so they can expand its universe and characters in a sequel without alienating anyone who hasnt seen the first one . Also, sword and scorcery fantasy is still a big draw - the succsess of skyrim, game of thrones and the money that the hobbit will inevitably make , is proof of that . Additionally, warwick davis needs to be in more movies - this mother fucker has more charisma and geek cred than taylor kitch will ever have. Make it happen, disney!

by Quake II
Hearing that Joseph Kosinski is back directing is a big WIN for the sequel. The guy is a former architect and assistant professor and it shows. His use of colors, sets, visual effects and designs is outstanding. That's why he should be directing a Star Wars film someday soon. If you hate Tron Legacy without admitting it has some breathtaking visuals, art designs and action sequences, you're just a completely full of shit troll. Most TB's seem to like the look of Tron Legacy and agree that the movie wasn't that good
by D o o d
I should remind you all that the look of Tron Legacy is a direct copy of the original movie. So they streamlined the designs of the suits a little, but that's not that difficult to do. I actually preferred the original outfits myself. The fact of the matter is that the original film was PIONEERING. Say what you want about the movie but at the least it was breaking all kinds of grounds with that they did. Now fast forward to Tron Legacy, WHAT did they do that was pioneering? The opportunity was there. They could've done an amazing job on the young Jeff Bridges, but instead we got a substandered CG shitfest.

If you think the first Tron was underwhelming, you probably do not understand it. In particular, you do not understand its importance as both a narrative and technical milestone. The second is possibly understood reasonably well. The first is not, because Tron was so hugely influential that it can seem unimpressive when judged by the standards of the world it helped create. In short, Tron is the very first depiction of cyberspace. First depiction of an online virtual world. The word 'user' for a computer operator is cemented in popular culture by Tron. It features neat side-alleys of users as gods, and there's a through-line of time dilation that can easily be missed. It's the first cinema story to feature a data weapon as a plot point, i.e. a virus or trojan. It depicts artificial life (albeit anthropomorphically). Tron was so ahead of its time, just like its 1982 contemporary Blade Runner. To repeat, people who are underwhelmed by it probably do not realize just how many new things were in it, because they are so used to the world that was left in its wake.
-
I thought it was flawed, and flabby, but had a lot of good things in it. It is first and foremost a visual and auditory spectacle. (I love the soundtrack.) I felt that the Rinzler storyline was bodged, and that there was too much pedestrian exposition rather than exposition built into the fabric of the story. (Is the story explained on the move while other things are happening, or by people sitting down while nothing else is happening? In Legacy, it's mainly the latter.)
-
I wanted the music to have swells and movements
-
What I wrote was: The Light Sailer is one of my favourite cinematic cues of all time. By turns, it suggests mystery, beauty, something coming to life, and triumphant escape.
-
el-guappo: But I'd really like some hard rock like Sevendust, Chevelle, or Centerpeace during the action/driving scenes misterdarcy: I would not. At all.
-
I agree with you, the soundtrack by Daft Punk was very inspired and possibly the best thing about the movie. They got the look right but what they didn't do and it's a huge missed opportunity is that they didn't pioneer or break new ground with. Hell even the 3D was SOOOOOO substandered, it's embarrassing..!

-
...but it was cool... even just visually Legacy just did the same thing as the first, flawed but cool. I love the fact that the new films are not prequels or re-imaginings. What the fuck do people want from this? It's a far fetched fantasy which represents the virtual world, it never made sense.

by Phategod2
That movie was purely absurd, full of terrible acting. The ONLY thing that movie had going for it was the light cycle scene.
-
so cut the chase and get Philip Glass to score the move already.
-
No, we can not agree. Because what you have said is 100% crap.
-
People posting an opinion on the original Tron should qualify it by posting their age. The only problem I had with Legacy was the lack of Tron. If they did all the CGI work to make young Jeff Bridges they should have done the same with Bruce Boxleitner...
by thecomedian
I'd like to see a sequel where the story shifts to Tron and Alan with little bits of Flynn here and there if Jeff Bridges is up for it. Tron is the Spartacus of the Grid. His name is in the title. He should be the hero and 3 years later with Disney now OWNING ILM I'm pretty sure CGI Boxleitner as Tron will probably be improved over what they did with CLU.
-
I loved tron legacy and it gets massive replay on my blu-ray this movie was made for hi-def and surround sound. I just hope the plot is revolutionary and it follows sam flynn and quorra outside and the cillian murphy character. I mean why introduce him as a high ranking programmer if he's not gonna be in this one. I suspect he is and he's gonna find out about the grid and snatches the chip and brings it to the web and chaos ensues. Sam and quorra has to fix it from the inside. And Kevin is not dead...
-
Cool news!! Thought TRON LEGACY was a success and gets better with each viewing.
-
I had a good job, a wife and a kid with another on the way. I had been working late a lot as I was bucking for a promotion and a raise so I could get that house out in the suburbs my wife and I had always dreamed of. p^ Then, I saw Tron Legacy and everything changed....I almost immedietely starting trolling movie news sites to complain about how awful it was and how it was only hollow CGI. I was so obsessed with how robbed I was that the sequel to a mediocre genre flick in the 80's would spawn something in the same vein but with a larger budget. p^ My work began to suffer. My wife moved out and took the kid after suffering a stress induced miscarriage. I commiserated with some of the trolls on AICN but that did little to stem my downward spiral. I just couldn’t understand how I could be so bothered about something that truthfully meant so little to me. After much soul searching in the bottom of a bottle and at the end of used needle, it finally dawned on me that I was a soulless, artless, talentless drone consuming media packets that sometimes come in repeating flavors. I then killed myself before submitting this to the site.

Tron Legacy was okay - Flynn's stoner routine took it in the wrong direction
by I_Snake_Plissken
The gaming sequences (which let’s face it are the only thing that made the original Tron fun) were well done. The visuals were great, and Olivia Wilde was a smoking hot piece of eye candy. But, the overall story was flat, and the whole thing was brought down by Lebowski Flynn. Flynn was a cocky, strong-willed SOB in the original, his mellowing just didn’t work….man.
-
What really would have been a hell of an ending was all those friggen Programs breaching "our" world with Flynn's son(whashisname) & Tron trapped on the otherside...

Great idea. Legacy also lacked an awesome villian, bad-Flynn was no MCP or Zark.
