Dane Dehaan will be Harry Osborn in the next SPIDER-MAN!
Hey folks, Harry here... Contrary to some, I really quite liked THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. My least favorite stuff in that film had to do with OsCorp and Peter's parents. I just felt that the time they spent on that would have been better spent further developing Captain Stacy & Peter & Gwen's relationships... or more LIZARD stuff - and the deleted scenes on the Blu Ray really show some stuff that I would have liked in the film. BUT that was film 1. FILM 2 - we're apparently going to be getting ELECTRO by way of Jamie Foxx, which is interesting. I really only care about how spiffy Foxx is going to look in the lightning bolt mask and the green & yellow! I'm only barely kidding. Electro's costume is pretty damn ridiculous - but I sort of love it precisely because it is ridiculous. I mean, if you said to ELECTRO, "You're costume looks lame" you would be fried. In fact, he might've made the costume so outlandish to provoke exactly that.
But I'm not talking about ELECTRO or Jamie Foxx. Nope, a far more integral casting for the Parker universe has occurred. DANE DEHAAN, the boy that lost it big time in CHRONICLE, well that actor has signed on to play Harry Osborn.
Given we are in the midst of telling the Gwen Stacy / Peter Parker story from the comics, bringing in a really solid actor like DeHaan to play Harry... well it makes me think they might actually stick a toe or two into the Gil Kane Drug Story stuff with Harry. THAT WOULD BE OUTSTANDING! I always loved the social conscious stories that the webslinger had - and those Gil Kane Harry Osborn hooked on smack stories - that took place in the heart of the Gwen Stacy tale.... all while Harry's Dad was freaking the fuck out... becoming the GREEN GOBLIN, while Harry dealt with his inadequacies through his secret addiction... There's great material there. I wonder if that is going to be the 'human story' that Peter and Gwen are dealing with in this next film. Alot of folks dislike the Harry Osborn character - but for me, he's another of the failures in Peter Parker's life.
Parker isn't supposed to be surrounded with sweet awesome people. Parker is for all intents and purposes the JOB of the Marvel Universe. His is a story of woe. He's given hope like a YOYO, constantly being pulled away from him, before giving him a bit of hope again.
I love this casting, I just hope they give Dan DeHaan the Harry Osborn do.

I unpublished it, as his write-up didn't provide the context that I felt the story needed.

What the what? I finally get to see Electro on screen and it's played by Jamie of-all-people Fox? When I was but a little boy, I was sure that Satan looked like KISS's Gene Simmons dressed in Electro's mask. Now I have Jamie Fox to contend with. Oh, well. Never saw the new Spidey anyway. Don't feel the need to see this one either. (Yet, somehow I was compelled to post a dumb comment here...)
-
Another good guy who is going to go crazy in a Superhero film. However, this kid shows real emotion, looks like a young Luke Skywalker and should work well off Andrew Garfield.
-
It wasn't bad, but it wasn't nearly good enough to justify it's existence.
-
I watched it, but couldn't get Raimi's version out of my head and how he nailed the origin story. This just left me cold. We still don't have a decent Peter Parker either, it's between Maguires' whiney emo, or Andrew Garfields skater boi.
-
but granted I don't know if anyone was ever seriously looking in his direction, if he ever even had a chance.

Stop the presses! World goes wild for news about... wait, what was this film again?
by kevred
They've made Spidey into just another genre film without any A-list talent that no one really cares about. Shame! Batman, Supes, X-Men, and the Marvel Studios stable all get A-list talent and excite the masses. But the biggest Marvel character of all time is now just another ho-hum also-ran. Shame!
-
Looks like Leo circa Growing Pains. Jaime Fox is a buz kill for this. Not saying he can't act or anything it's just Electro is very, meh... I want a new Green Goblin please.
-
Hobie Brown i'd get on board with that. I have a soft spot for the Prowler, don't care if people think he's lame.
-
that would sure differentiate it from the raimi movies! and it was such a key element in the immediate aftermath of gwen's death.
-
than its 2002 counterpart and cost about $100 million more to make. Heck even Spiderman 3 did better. This new reincarnation may please Spiderman purists but it's gonna have to really knock it out of the ball park if they want this to make it to a trilogy.

Right, you really think they're going to stick a drug story in a movie designed to sell action figures to 7-year-olds?
by Domi'sInnerChild
They already fucked up the first one by going to dark and having lizard rats chewing on mouse corpses. Adding a drug story is about as likely as a special edition of Iron Man 2 coming out with a bunch of drunk Tony Stark scenes added.

-
A $1.60 was all I wanted to give it. Proved to be as limp and unispired as expected. I did like Garfield's Parker though. Is the end credits scene pretty much pointless? Seems so with Electro casting.
-
It was better than I thought it would be, but it was far from great. I still don't get the look of Lizard. Yes, they wanted a motion capture look, but they could've protruded his face a little and still have the mouth move in a realistic manner. But I thought the movie tried too hard to set up a lot of stuff. Yes, Oscorp will play a bigger role. Yes, the parents will play a bigger role. I just think it took away from the action and Peter/Gwen story. Captain Stacy was sort of wasted. I don't think we saw enough of him. You really needed another scene of him going after Spider-man. But because of retelling the origin... again, it wasted a lot of time that could've be used to improve the story.

That is a WHOLE lot of geek/nerd/pick your own term in one room. Gonna have to shoot WIDE to keep all of that on screen. Jamie Fox as Electro...this isn't a comedy? Best of luck to the production. Might just need it. Maybe.

And somehow actually made the Raimi films (Yes even Spider-Man 3!!!) seem good in retrospect. I hope the next one is better.

Hey, Sorry I haven't written in so long but I have had terrible diarrhea and this website is going down and I am on painkillers and I promise that next week I will publish reviews of all of the movies that came out on DVD in February of last year. Anyway, I read on another website that some guy got cast in the AMAZING SPIDER MAN movie, which I loved. Go ahead and google it, because these painkillers are making me forget his name. We had a guy post it with proper names and all earlier, but I removed his, because he hated the movie BATTLESHIP, which I loved. Like the casting. A bit predictable, but solid. The question now is: who plays Norman?
by rk349097
I like Michael Massee as an actor (and he looks the part), but this part is going to need a bigger name to carry the load. I was holding out hope for Sean Penn, but this guy doesn't plausibly look like he could be his son (not that that really matters all that much).

Having finally saw it, I can safely say that those who dislike it are fucked in the head and ass. A better all-round representation of the character than what Raimi :tried: to give us. The action was lightyears better than the Raimi work and I didn't want to punch Peter in the face like I did that jackass Toby Maguire and his dumb-ass stoner expression. Although I did find that Garfield is eerily similar to Elias Koteas in his face and how he speaks (at least with his non-brit accent). Fuck the haters, you can all go fuck monkeys and get AIDS. ...how can you be against a film which featured TOBY EFFING MAGUIRE expressing his dark side through the media of floopy hair, dance and an aggressive homage to Saturday Night Fever? oooohya...because of all of the above guff. Bryce Dallas Howard deserved better, she was the only actor who seemed to be trying to put something into it...
-
I actually like it on it's own, but as part of the movie it didn't seem to work. It was a little too overblown and seemed to overshadow the film (thinking of the truly awful scene where spidey saves the kid on the bridge near the middle of the movie. It's like the music is all pumped up and heroic, but it just makes an already horribly acted/filmed/shot scene seem even more silly).

Norman goes crazy over the course of the movie introduce the black cat use the Harry Osborn goes to the Psychiatrist angle. always thought that was a awesome twist in the comics Norman hires a sinister six type group to fix his spider problem. Lizard, Mysterio, Electro, Jack o Latern, Vulture, ect. Spidey beats them with ease, which garners the eye of Kraven the hunter. A full length Kraven movie would be great even though its not going to happen...ever peter gets a part time job at the bugle peter finds the robber who shot uncle ben, gets his heroic catharsis give peter a happy ending w gwen stacey, aunt may, and whoever. cus we all know how the next one is going to end ...

How is it possible to score a superhero film and fuck up creating a THEME? Seriously, that shit should write itself and yet Horner dropped the ball on it. Also, "You are costume looks lame" - DID I HAVE A FUCKING STROKE? What the hell am I reading? End a sentence with a preposition or omit a letter from a word and it's still readable. Improper use of a contraction and the sentence ceases to make sense. Unless Electro is an agitated grammar school teacher, I don't think he'll give a shit about such a comment since he'll be too busy laughing himself to death over it.

Which means I only vaguely understood what Harry is talking about. I'm sure he's right, but I really don't care about the comic inspiration. Just give me a good movie.
-
I got banned just for criticising Herc's lack of actual TV content. seriously... He reviews very few TV reviews in what is the golden age of TV shows... and when her does he adds very little insight. He does have lots of Amazon links, lots of synopses (as if you can't find those in TV Guide)... It would be good to get a TV reviewer who is passionate, intelligent and consistent...
-
Sorry - done with Spidey movies. Could care less. Jamie Foxx as Electro. I shake my head.
-
They still have plenty of titles left. They could call it Spectacular Spider-Man, or Web of Spider-Man... They could actually tie it into the continuity of both Amazing Spider-Man and Raimi's films by saying those Spider-Men were clones and do a Abrams-style soft reboot. As for which is better, Amazing Spider-Man nailed Spider-Man (more of a smart-ass, web-shooters, better costume) while Raimi nailed Peter Parker (not a skater, more tormented by Ben and his sense of responsibility, constantly shit on by life).
-
But then, maybe he'll elevate the franchise a bit.
-
No one understands how important his work is! = FACT If he has to break the law in order to create a new source of clean energy then he will = FACT Something goes terribly wrong (because of an Evil White Co-worker) = FACT No he's going to get revenge on the system that turned him into a monster = FACT
-
I have been banned TWICE by Herc. The first time was for questioning why he uses the coaxial section as a forum for his Leftist political views. The second was for questioning why I was banned the first time. I have been with AICN since 1997. t would be fantastic if this site were to return to what it was when it was started -- a forum and information smorgasbord for film/comic/tv geeks. Somewhere along the line, it became a place where one user tries to insult other users for their taste in movies, comics, tv shows or politics. Once upon a time, we would read a post with spoilers about an upcoming film (e.g. STAR WARS: Episode 1) and spend our time discussing it instead of criticizing it or others.
-
I was SO glad I didn't see it in the theater (first superhero movie that I skipped in the theater). It was, IMO, a waste. I HATED the casting of Peter Parker. This kid was just wrong for the part. Toby nailed it and has created pretty big shoes to fill. The whole origin story with his parents as a murder mystery...(yawn). Maybe this one will be better, but it was just a rushed and completely unnecessary reboot and retelling of the origin story.
-
While I think it's kind of lame "unpublishing" a story, at least it was The Kidd's. That guy's write-ups are so condescending and annoying.
-
There's an hour-long flashback devoted to re-airing Spider-Man's origin story. It's for all those people who were unsure if Peter Parker was once a spider who later became a man.
-
I'm pretty tolerant, I don't dislike that many movies. But ASM was terrible; the weird tics of Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker, the horrible non plot of the Lizard, the daft handling of Uncle Ben's murder, etc. Now there were a couple of good things: Emma Stone as Gwen, Sally Fields(surprisingly) as Aunt May. But overall I thought it was terrible. I still think that the sequel can be salvaged, and a good movie can be made. And I'm hopeful that happens, as Spidey is my second favorite comic book hero. But they need to fix a lot of things to make it work.
-
Complete with parking lots.
-
...and if they accurately name the sequel, it'll simply be called "Shit."

because I'm a whiny little bitch like everyone else in the film freak community. I think Nolan is over rated because he hit such a peak with TDK and, for me, The Prestige, that everything else he does kind of lets me down. It's not fair to him, it's immature, but that's how most of us are. Same with GDT, only the opposite, I love him but I keep waiting for him to release his masterpiece and it never happens, for me at least. I hate Fincher for 1 reason: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is one of my favorite films of all time, and for several reason it doesn't look like the sequel will happen. Not his fault, but he's associated with the hate because I'm a 5 year old pounding my fists in a hissy fit when it comes to the box office failure of that film. We act like children when it comes to film sometimes. I certainly do. But I never make up my mind until I've actually seen the film and given it a chance.

Harry, we decided to have this intervention because we're worried about you....

Strengths: -I enjoy movies and appreciate the fiction as someone else's unique vision, rather than be upset that a movie doesn't play out the way I want it to, in service to my childhood notions of how a character *should* act. -I am able to separate my ability to willingly suspend my disbelief from my ability to try to project myself into a movie I WANT to like or dislike.. -I know the difference between strong writing and strong directing, and can analyze a movie based upon the proper merits (or lack) of either. -My enjoyment of a movie is not dependent on it having lasers, boobies or monsters (though that helps). -I recognize that a bad final product released theatrically is a bad movie in and of itself, regardless of bad marketing or misplaced intentions. Weaknesses: -I am poor at giving positive reviews to movies such as AFTERSHOCK, GODZILLA, CLOUD ATLAS, AMAZING SPIDER MAN, PROMETHEUS, and DARK SHADOWS based upon pwesents and set visits. -I am equally poor at giving poor reviews to movies such as TDKR, SINISTER, and INCEPTION based upon petty grousing and jealousy. -I am not a natural showman. Sadly, my work tends to be on time and I have a hard time *Whetting the appetite* of my readership my not publishing anything relevant for weeks on end. Miscellany: I know the difference between Your and You're. And Its and It's. And There and Their. And If and Whether or Not. And Fox and Foxx. And A Lot and Alot. And Regardless and Irregardless. So, do I get the job?

Harry unpublished the Kidd's article bc it didn't TOW THE COMPANY LINE
by D.Vader
Do not fall for Harry's bullshit here. The meaning is clear. NEVER before have we seen someone have a story unpublished bc it didn't "provide the proper context". If anything, editors ADD to existing stories, putting in their own two cents and adding MORE context. That is the *professional* step Harry should have taken. He should have added to the Kidd's story. He should have provided a counterpoint. Instead, the Kidd had a different viewpoint, and Harry banished it. Bad form, Harry, Bad form indeed. (and I don't even like The Kidd)

I mean put yourself in a workplace situation, for those of you that have an actual professional workplace(I don't mean that the way it sounds). ...Dehaan's central performance. My missis HATES super-hero films and she was glued to Chronicle simply because of DD. Ditto 'Lawless'. Whilst I look forward to seeing him tear up the screen as the Goblin (Hobgoblin?) I would love to see this kid as Tetsuo in a live-action Akira (should it finally happen). And nice one for pulling The Kidd's garbage... who hired that kid? I don't rate his opinions at all... he's certainly no Moriarty/Quint. I enjoyed the way he stirred things up at first but now I skip every review because I reckon this guy just hates going to the movies (though he probably doesn't realise it yet!) Unless of course the yardstick you happen to be using is the Uwe Boll school of film making. But really...I don't see how people can muster any enthusiasm for another Spidey movie in the vein of the most recent one. It was...in a word...forgettable. Not TERRIBLE...just completely pain-by-numbers. No new territory was covered. Nothing new was explored. In fact, it felt like a step was taken backward - re-treading old territory we'd JUST SEEN within recent enough memory. There was just no point in rebooting a film series within 10 years of the first and 5 or so of the last one. Honestly I had forgotten most of the film about 5 minutes after I saw it - and that's only a slight hyperbole. I haven't seen The Abyss in about 20 years and I still remember it perfectly well. Haven't seen Castaway since it was in theaters - still remember it. The Amazing Spiderman? I kind of remember the end, I remember him taking his mask off every 5 minutes, and...well that's about it. This is, mind you, only my opinion. One many share, I assure you, but only an opinion. As is true of any viewpoint put forth on this site. If you enjoyed it, and can get excited about another one...more power to you. I envy you. Perhaps it's because I never read a single Spiderman comic in my life that I enjoyed the first 3 far more. I don't know. I enjoyed Watchmen, too. Again, I never experienced the source material. Maybe that's the key - not being too invested in what's going on.

I'm really shocked that they're going with Jamie Foxx as Electro. But throwing Harry in there makes me groan
by Wcwlkr
I mean I just wish Marvel could get this character back! With what they've done in The Avengers films just makes me hope that Spidey will be back where he belongs in Marvel hands. An earlier poster said it best there's so many great Spider-Man stories, and villains but we're getting the rehash of the Green Goblin story, because Sony wants to keep the rights.

The Amazing Spider-Man is not only the best Spider-Man movie that I've seen so far...
by Jack
...it's also the second best comic book movie of the year and arguably the best origin story film that we've got from these movies so far, right there with Batman Begins and Iron Man. As for the news, brilliant and inspired casting, I trust Webb will make with the sequel what Dark Knight did for Batman Begins and Batman's mythos. Let's just hope that Webb won't screw up like Nolan did with TDKR. As for Kidd... fuck him. Seriously, worst AICN staff member of all time. I seriously never understood why he was hired in the first place. Bring Mori back, Harry. You know you both want to.

he was really good in chronicle and he'll be great in this.

wcolbert -Though you were talking about S-M 3 until you said - reboot.
by Bob
Spider-Man 3 - "completely pain-by-numbers. No new territory was covered. Nothing new was explored. In fact, it felt like a step was taken backward - re-treading old territory we'd JUST SEEN within recent enough memory." See? Fit's perfectly.

Once again AICN with news hot off the presses

Josh Trank: Sloppy with the actors, didn't get much out of them. Gets: to direct the reboot of Fantastic Four Dane Dehaan: hammy performace. totally bratty and unlikable, failed to realize what could have been a great tragic main character. gets: role in huge franchise Max Landis: Great concept, well paced script, ripe for world-building. Gets: his sequel script rejected by studio Michael B Jordan: Charming, likable, good performance. Gets: killed early, no recognition EXPLAIN???

You decided before you even saw TASM that it was "great". You're like the fanatical Lucas fanboys who loved everything GL did with the prequels, sight unseen. Start enjoying movies for what they are, and not because of an agenda.
-
I'm the biggest Spidey fan around, and my Blu copy of TASM is still sitting on my shelf in its original wrapping. I was completely underwhelmed at the theater, but still was compelled to buy it (again, biggest Spidey fan around). But I've just no interest in watching it again. I've watched AVENGERS again (for the 20th time) since I bought TASM, so it's not like I haven't had the time! The Spidey Movie-verse is in a sad state of affairs. I just can't get up the energy to care who's playing Harry or Electro. Bring on Iron Man 3 and the rest of Phase II!

I think Dehaan is an outstanding choice. No more weird Franco smirks around this sequel.
by Thad Pittman
Chronicle was a very pleasant surprise partially due to Dehaan. I think he'll bring some pathos, pity, and all out creepiness to this part as the series progresses. I wonder who'll play Norman now, as Willem Dafoe is a tough creep to beat. What's Christopher Walken got planned?
-
Amazing "Spider-Man" - even though this would be far from reality...Goodbye, Spidey - Nice while it lasted. Made Riami's trilogy seem like masterpieces, and to some degree they had that streak about them...and them some.

Sandman. The origin scene. Thomas Haden Church OWNED Sandman!

He would've made a better Peter Parker. Garfield seemed like a pretty cool, well-adjusted 30yr old highschool student to me. Isn't Peter Parker supposed to be a nerd?

The first movie sucked ass. I love super-heros but for some reaon couldn't get around to seeing it until it came out on blu-ray and was very very disappointed.

on DVD. I figured I was going to be slightly wrong and it would at least be somewhat watchable. Nope. It sucked. Both the teen drama/romance storyline and the superhero storyline felt half-assed, and it really didn't feel like I was watching an adaptation of Spider-man at all. It barely even felt like a real movie. That 45 minute mashup of trailer footage that came out a few weeks before the theatrical release felt no less coherent than this crap. No scene had any sense of significance to it. Not when Parker gets his powers, not when Ben gets killed, not when Gwen discovers that Parker is Spider-man. Shit just kinda happens, and the characters roll with it, like they know exactly what they're supposed to do, like they've been living this way forever. I'm no fan of the Raimi movies, not even the second one. But those at least felt like adaptations of Spider-man, and what's more they felt like REAL movies. Like someone was trying to tell a story in a way that resonated with an audience. I think ASM has to be the worst big-budget comic book adaptation ever. Worse even that Spider-man 3.
