Latino Review Says The JUSTICE LEAGUE Movie Villain Is...
Over at Latino Review, the inimitable El Mayimbe is talking about the JUSTICE LEAGUE movie which is ramping up over at Warners.
Seems LR has done some snooping around, and can now reveal that the villain in said picture is...
Darkseid!!!

Yes, I know who Darkseid is...but when I first saw LR's reveal...the spelling of his name immediately flashed me back to that shitty 80s boy band in ROCK OF AGES... the Z-Guyeezz.
It'll be very interesting to see how this one shakes out...particularly how The Powers That Be choose to handle Batman and Superman in this new picture. With so many contrary indications, it's difficult to get a sense of matters at this point.
Would/should Joseph Gordon-Levitt put on Nolan's Batsuit for JL? Or, would/should Warners use JL as a means to relaunch/reboot the Bat franchise in an entirely different direction?
Will Henry Cavill - Clark/Superman in Zack Snyder's upcoming MAN OF STEEL - appear as Supes in JL? Or, will there be two Supes for us to process in close succession - essentially a Snydervese Supes and a JLverse Supes? This later option...could get awkward.
Time will tell...more as we know more...

-
DC needs to get their shit together before they go for something this ambitious.
-
So yeah, that's going to be a trick. Also, dollars to donuts they're doing a loose adaptation of either JLA: Rock Of Ages or Final Crisis (or both).
-
and DC still remains a step behind Marvel. Sheesh, as a AICN poster once said, Marvel Studios should just use the cash they made from The Avengers and buy the rights to Batman and watch DC go completely under.
-
Zero confidence in this.
-
I think the film will do well regardless, but will hobbled right from the start due to Avengers comparisons. I am more interested in who will play Green lantern. I am a huge Hal Jordan fan, but after the Ryan Reynolds fiasco, they should probably just go right to John Stewart.

A non-human bad guy? Come on, give us another appearance by Lex Luthor, or even The Joker!!
by Kamaji
Just kidding. Seriously, if they go with something that expands the DC Universe to other galaxies and makes it not as kooky as 'Green Lantern,' might have a chance there.
-
...but casual movie fans aren't going to know that. Even if JLA comes out before Avengers 2 they're just going to say "Hey, they just ripped of the guy from Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy!"
-
I wonder how general audiences will respond? I'm sure geeks will easily see both movies, but will regular folks take their kids to see both movies?
-
Until there is an official announcement of a JL movie even happening, I'd take all of this as PURE speculation. And I say keep MAN OF STEEL and JL separate. Having 2 different Superman actors will only be confusing for people who can't figure out the guy with the S on the chest and the blue suit with a Red cape is SUPERMAN.
-
...hell, judging by this talkback, even non-casual fans think Darkseid is a Thanos rip-off when, in reality, it's the other way around.

Really, REALLY wanna see Darkseid on the big screen. GET FUCKING BRUCE TIMM AND PAUL DINI ON THE PHONE NOW!
-

I think Marvel's path towards the Avengers movie(s) was easier given that outside of the Hulk, the general movie going public didn't have many preconceived notions regarding the other characters like Iron Man, Thor, etc. Marvel was able to build and sculpt the product with the lead-up films. With Justice League, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, et al are pretty established properties to most people. How you shoehorn all these iconic characters and expectations into one film is going to be challenging.
-
Darkseid is a FAR better villain. He's also someone it makes sense for the JL to fight. They aren't recruited like The Avengers, they're all established heroes who join together to fight an evil none of them can fight individually. Superman could've fought the Chitauri by himself, Darkseid and his minions requires the entire League AND reservists.
-
I can't help but think that Warners is leaning way too much on the idea that "Challenge of the Super-Friends" had a huge fan-base and, for that reason, not only will we go forward with the characters of the Justice League without giving us their origins first, but now we have their villian as well. Now, don't get me wrong, I understand this line of thinking and, for the most part, going without origins is a good idea because we've already seen nearly every League member's origin on television or motion picture before and it will save on story-telling time. However, pulling Darkseid in raises all sorts of problems because then we get into the whole Apokolips/New Gods history (done very poorly on "Smallville" but done with a great deal of success with the animated Justice League and Superman series), and this could be this film's downfall if handled too heavyhanded, giving the viewer too much too quickly (like throwing the entire New Gods saga and it's characters in a 20 minute recap). Personally, I would have preferred to see the Injustice Gang but that would have driven the price tag for this film way beyond any other comic-based films before it and Warners cannot afford a failure on this one. Even a mediocre film is going to be a failure. They have to knock this one out of the park on a level that "The Avengers" did times 10 if they want their own film franchises to continue on. Considering the reaction to "The Dark Knight Rises" and the less-than excited buzz regarding "Man of Steel" I keep hearing from non-comic book movie fans, Warner's has it's work cut out for them. Oh, and Darthblart, yeah, Arnold for Darkseid; because he did such a memorable job as Mr. Freeze in "Batman and Robin", right?
-
If Darkseid is the villain ... we're going to need a two-party flick. A Justice League movie with Darkseid could be super fucking EPIC if done properly ... and with DC skipping the route in which Marvel went with introducing each character, a JL movie should be at least 2 movies long ... give it room to breathe and properly introduce each character. Again, BRUCE TIMM AND PAUL DINI ON THE PHONE NOW!!! They know DC characters ...
-
They'll use Johns latest JL reboot. It has Darkseid, it features the League, Cyborg means you don't have to CGI/cover an actor in make-up to play Martian Manhunter, and every character gets a cool little introduction that doesn't require a previously existing film. Plus, Aquaman and Wonder Woman kicking Darkseid's ass is something that is great in print, but would be AMAZING in live-action.
-

Where do they go after Darkseid? This seems to be rushing it.
by kevred
Thanos is far from the only Marvel big bad around; from the start I've thought that using him was just Marvel taking the wind out of DC's potentially epic villain - beating them to the punch. But DC going straight to Darkseid in the first film seems like a leap. They should learn from Marvel: the star of the first film is just the novelty of all the heroes getting together, NOT the "ultimate villain". Let's face it, the villain in Avengers was almost an afterthought. Loki was charismatic and fun, but he was introduced in Thor and no one really thought he was going to succeed in taking over the world. And the aliens? Pfft - just filler. Just an excuse to get the heroes together and for us to see a bunch of scenes of them getting to know each other. If DC plans to introduce several characters that haven't been in films yet (Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman, whoever else), explain new faces for other characters (Batman, maybe Green Lantern?), set up their partnership, AND take the time to really flesh out maybe the all-time greatest villain in DC annals (along with the Joker), that seems to be REALLY pushing it for one film. Of course, done right, this could be amazing to see. But it would be quite a feat to pull off.
-
How could you be so WRONG. Keep Welling far, FAR away. SMALLVILLE was a fucking BLIGHT.

Arnold for Thanos. That is all.

Fucking brilliant exchange ... Batman outsmarting Darkseid exemplifies EXACTLY why Batman is the most badass of all superheros ... even when he doesn't have a superpower.
-
The only character who'll need set-up is Cyborg, but chances are we'll see it through HIS POV. Normal guy drawn into this madness, fundamentally changed, and becomes a hero when he's called upon. Other characters can have Oceans Eleven style set-up. Batman brains, Superman heart, Wonder Woman and Aquaman brawn, Flash for comic relief and Hal Jordan for 'fuck this shit, GET OFF MY PLANET' awesome.
-
A Disciple of Death versus a Lord of Destruction. Tell me then Darkseid, would you care to make a wager on the outcome?
-
No, that'd be the Anti-Monitor.

Marvel got to screen with Thanos first...to the casual viewer, that'll make Darkseid the ripoff.

It's like they're writing down a list of every stupid, awful decision they could possibly make, and then acting on those decisions. I'm not saying they should parrot Marvel, but they should look at how Marvel developed a universe and how that effort resulted in Avengers being a stunning success. Right now JLA is shaping up to be a worse disaster than Green Lantern.

For whatever flaws ROTG has, and even with kiddie sensibilities, it was a great blueprint for how the JL would come together on screen. Has anyone else seen it who can speak to this?

The roster will be: GL, Flash, WW, MM, and Black Canary. In other words, second stringers
-
Nope. Darkseid did in Smallville. Live-action. Mock it all you want, but DC beat Marvel to the punch there. And Darkseid has more pop-culture relevance, given his key role in DC animated properties.
-
Darkseid came first, but given that DC are already playing catchup with the MCU, it'll be seen as too similar to Thanos, on the verge of copying. Fine for you, me and the rest of the fans, but for the casual viewer, not so good. Might be time for DC to get a creative director/Kevin Feige-type to plan these things out. What's Dini doing?
-
...the only thing the filmakers can doin order to avoid comparison is change how he looks (which will, of course, cause tons of fanboy butthurt).
-
Since Darkseid first appeared in the Jimmy Olsen comic? Frankly, I think they should go with the Injustice League just so we can have that huge Darth Vader helmet rising from the swamp. Adapt the old tv show. Better yet, forget all this JLA shit and go with Del Toro's Justice League Dark idea with Deadman, Constantine, Swamp Thing, Phantom Stranger and the like.
-
They can't even copy Avengers correctly. FIRST you establish all the hero's all in their own films. You find success by casting good leads and good directors. Something DC has not done with Green Lantern. Batman doesn't count cause they're recasting his role. Also the jury is out on Man of Steel. As always DC is the shit mirror of whatever awesomething Marvel is doing. They never learn.

PLEASE? It will NEVER be "spun off" into a film. Ever. Won't. Happen.

That fight between Batman and Owlman was pretty sweet. I feel like I've had my fill of Darkseid, especially after Superman/Batman Apocalypse. Besides, doesn't starting off a franchise with the most powerful villain in the universe seem anti-climactic? Why not base the live action film on Grant Morrison's JLA?
-
Why would DC copy Marvel? EVERYONE knows who Batman and Superman are. This isn't like Marvel where the characters had borderline mainstream relevance - Batman and Superman are pop culture icons. So you make a JL film STARRING them, and use it to introduce characters without the pressure of a film. So WW, Aquaman, Flash etc can get 'OMG' moments that inspire people go watch THEIR future films. I mean... the situations aren't comparable. Iron Man was a risk. Batman and Superman films are not risks. At the very least films starring those two break even.
-
I wonder how much we'll get to see...boom tubes, Apokolips, New Genesis... This could be the greatest superhero movie ever if they realize IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO FIT INTO OUR REALITY. Just go wild and bring the comic world to life.
-
Hilarious. I laughed out loud at that analogy.
-
I would agree completely. It's not that he's a bad actor, he was just completely wrong for that part. He should have been The Flash. He would have been perfect for that role. I would have chosen Chris Pine for the Green Lantern.
-

What matters is which movie is better...so in the end, Darkseid will likely be seen as the poor man's Thanos and not the other way around, regardless who which came first.
-
He isn't Bruce Wayne. Even if they merge with Nolan's bat-verse, which isn't a very good idea anyway, I still don't get using JGL. I like him as an actor, nothing to do with that, I just don't get having "Batman, not Bruce Wayne" in a justice league movie. If its not bruce wayne....that's incredibly strange.

Smallville was one of the Worst iterations of any part of Superman's or young Clark Kent's life. If a movie version/continuation of it ever hinted at hitting the big screen I think there would be a riot. .. and I would be in it it with a pitch fork and torch.
-
Could be a good way of sorting out their different actors for same roll problem. Plus I wouldn't mind seeing Keaton in the Batsuit again and gotta be worth it to see Dean Cain as Sups for the laughs. But seriously this is probably the ultimate story that they'd wanna get on the big screen.

Why does Darkseid wear hooker boots? Here comes another cross-dressing villain.
by Stereotypical Evil Archer

No one wants screen time wasted on back story for the big names such as Bats or Supes, and if DC follows the Marvel trick of letting the second stringers (like Hawkeye and Black Widow, here it would be everyone else on the Justice League team that hasn't had their own movie yet), all that would be needed is a brief moment to sum up their history before just letting them run with it. We sometimes hear of movies in which the whole run time is a set up for the more exciting sequel when the characters can now have fun since we got their origins out of the way. Imagine the joy of a Justice League movie in which it starts with Bats monitoring the other heroes as they save the world in their own ways, and he is talking to Alfred about each one, summing up their back story in a one or two line wrap-up before moving to the next ripped-from-a-comic classic moment for the next character. Now Bats points Alfred to footage of the baddie showing up, and Bats saying he's going to need some help with this one. Cue the titles, and there in 5 minutes we have everyone's back story out of the way, our friends are right there as if they have always been there, and we can spend the rest of the movie marveling at seeing our heroes being heroes. Give them their own movies afterwards if the public demands it, like everyone now wants the Hulk and maybe even Black Widow to get their own films. By going backwards from the Marvel plan, this can be an insane roller coaster of excitement in which the audience is treated to endless fun and explosions, whetting their whistles to be begging for follow-ups, spreading a larger story over individual movies in the future just like the comics would do across multiple titles. But seriously folks, for good or bad, if we can get a few incredible moments out of this movie, a few shining scenes with the team, with Aquaman, Wonder Woman, anyone of our childhood heroes, we should consider it a few hours and a couple bucks well spent. Better than to never have those moments on the silver screen.

Warner Bros. only has itself to blame for sitting on their IPs for years and not doing anything with them. Marvel Studios had a vision and a plan and it has paid off with the global success of the Avengers movie.
-
I mean seriously DC, you telling me you can't make a movie about "The Real Warrior Princess" before you make the ensemble movie? With full bisexual persona! I mean really, isn't that the reason they stumble with Diana? Maybe TV will be the better medium for here. It's working with 'Arrow'. Marvel's movies are all PG-13 crap. Maxwell Lord- who was set to be the villain in the first project a few years ago. But yeah Darkseid is the biggest baddie DC has, so while it makes sense, I'd prefer to see Despero or the Appellax aliens- or the white martians bring in the J'onn J'onzz. This all rides on Man of Steel, I'd wager. If it's not a hit, I'm sure it will kill the JL movie. As for plot speculation in using Darkseid, I'm sure they'll just adapt Geoff Johns New 52 Justice League story- oui.

Syncopyverse: Man of Steel trilogy. Batboot trilogy. JLverse: JL trilogy. Wonder Woman. Flash. Green Lantern reboot. Aquaman (if they must). All leading into: Crisis parts I and II (maybe III).

Now they have decided to pit him against the JL he's to big? Look who he is going up against? The JL need a big villain. We have no idea how this is going to be pitched, or how many films they will decide to stretch the story out over. I say treat this like the LOTR and treat it with huge reverence. This is Superman, Batman, Wonderwoman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Aqua man, and Martian Man Hunter...this is the big leagues, the A list. Build a big story over three picture that gives us a worthy reason to get this groupof disperate heros together. They have to have a very fucking good reason to put Superman in a position that he would need help, and not just any old help. If this is done correctly it will blow the Avengers out of the water. Make us believe Warner, and if you dare pull another Green Lantern, I will come looking for you bastards. One by one by one.

Your point about treating this reverentially, over several movies ala Lord of the Rings, is a great one. Do it while they have the opportunity to, with all the talent right there. And it must be pointed out that Lord of the Rings didn't need any back story for most of the characters in the fellowship for us to love them. Think about that: unless we're Tolkien aficionados, we watched three incredible movies about a wizard, a dwarf, an elf, some hobbits, men, etc, and never needed any back story about them to relate to them and appreciate them. This could be done with the JLers, so to speak.

Hell at this point if I was DC I wouldn't really worry so much that you're using practically the same villain that Marvel has had/will have in their movie, but now a lot of people that know shit about comics are going to think that the Justice League is just a rip-off of The Avengers. Other then Batman, DC/Warner has dropped the ball with most of it's comic properties, at this point it may be too late to steer the ship in the right direction with Marvel being so spot on/giving audiences what they want.

...no build up, no character establishment, no world building...nothing. Starting with Darkseid...where could you go from there if the thing were to actually be successful? Doesn't inspire confidence imo.

Both are excellent villains. But, despite their physical similarities, they're very different characters. Thanos is a spoiled kid with Aedipus complex, in love with Death and completely torn apart by his inner demons. Darkseid is the incarnation of absolute evil. That's the main difference. If I were to choose, I'd pay to see an adaptation of the awesome story-arc of Superman in Apokolips made by John Byrne in the late 80s (a Legends cross-over). Talking about Apokolips... one of the best other-worldly environments ever created. Could be breathtaking if translated right to the big screen. Neil Blomkamp is the man for the job, me thinks.
-

Hollywood isnt going to follow a comic , tv show, or cartoon story line. they cant. or they are not smart enough. or both. The early 90s xmen cartoons would give them enough material to make 2 or 3 trilogys worth of movies.

Hell, Michael Shannon is Zod and I really don't want that character as the main villain but shit, it's Shannon and he's fucking badass in anything he does. I think next week's MoS's new trailer should give us a better idea of what to expect from MoS ... but I am hopeful that WB/Snyder/Nolan know they can't fuck this one up.

Timm and Dini WON'T HAPPEN So save yourself and the rest of us and drop it.

The questions you present Kidd is exactly why I think DC will screw this up. Look if Bruce Wayne isn't Batman in JL than there's no Batman.
by Wcwlkr
I mean you could seriously have two different Supermans going on which is ridiculous. But DC is going for the cash grab and capitalize on The Avengers success. Instead of trying to establish their own. To have JGL as Batman is a HORRIBLE idea, and if you have someone other than Henry Cavill playing Superman that's just as equally stupid.
-
Here's a tip... Use Henry Cavill if the Man of Steel is a success. He looks good so far but we'll see. However, the suit must be a little less tight and showing a bit less crotch cleavage. Forget about the 3-D "S" on supes chest. Just make it simmilar to the classic comic book "S" as the did in Superman: THE MOVIE!!! Recast Batman as somebody who can actually act like batman. Not skinny-boy Christian bale! Get a new actor, or for an older batman you could try Chris Noth. Whoever it is, make sure that he has a square jaw and looks to be at least 6 foot 2. Casting for Batman is crutial! Angelina Jolie can play Wonder Woman. also Jennifer Love Hewitt could play her. Sophia Bush could play her. It depends what age you want these heroes to be. I am assuming younger because that seems to be the current trend in Hollywood. The other characters can obviously be good actors but don't really need to be famous. Except Darkseid who can be played by James Earl Jones, Leonard Nimoy, or any other deep voiced actor because they will not need them to physically act due to CGI. That's it people. Except please get someone like John Williams to compose a really great score and personal themes for the actors. It really does make a difference when watching a movie with a great score such as BACK TO THE FUTURE, STAR WARS, JURASSIC PARK, SUPERMAN THE MOVIE, JAWS, ROCKY, E.T.,THE LAST STARFIGHTER, or any other number of great movies. Themes pull you more into the movie and make you even more interested in the characters. Those movies with great scores will be remembered much longer than those movies without them. Plus, it could generate more money at the box office for people who want to go see the film 2 or 3 times just because they want to hear their favorite theme song again! Hope this helps. See you later!

He and Bruce Timm have shown time and time again they know what they're doing with Batman & Superman. If they were leading the charge I'd be all in.

SUPER MAN RISES WONDERWOMAN RISES AQUAMAN RISES ( FROM THE DEEP SEA) MARTIAN MANHUNTER RISES CYBORG RISES GL RISES FLASH RISES THE LEGION OF DOOM RISES JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK RISES LEX LUTHOR RISES CATWOMAN RISES SUPER GIRL RISES POWER GIRL RISES BLACK LIGHTNING RISES! AND FINALLY TDKR II THERES YOUR NEXT DOZEN YEARS WORTH OF MOVIES DC. GET ON IT. ( seriously i would rather see a PowerGirl movie than the antman movie. for more than two reasons. )
-
You'd think everyone is under 18 years of age with these kind of comments. Darkseid is the poor man's Thanos? LOL. Marvel should buy Batman? double LOL. That being said...this JL film just screams fail. It's not hard to get a director willing to do another Batman series right, not hard to get someone to do another green lantern sequel to clean up the mess of the last one and it's certainly not hard to get someone to do Wonder Woman right (nicolas winding refn wants the damn job!) All you need to do is get the trinity plus green lantern on screen, leave the sequels for flash, martian manhunter etc...and build up to Darkseid! How hard is any of this? You'd think WB got some form of intelligence in these matters when Nolan made TDK trilogy for them.
-
Look it's supposed to be used in your refrigerator to take away bad smells. It's not supposed to be used as an actor in major motion pictures. Forget about this kid and get some real actors for this movie. If you want, I guess he could play Aquaman, but that's it! NEXT!

by Judge Briggs
We did get Joss Whedon for The Avengers - that was considered a dream come true for comic fans. And suffice to say, that certainly worked out.

tells me they want a build up similar to what Marvel is doing! Just keep Bale, Levitt (as Robin), Reynolds & Cavill. Do a Wonder Woman movie similar to the 2009 animated first. I Still think a Batman vs. Superman would also be cool segue prior to the Justice League movie! Also, give The Flash, AquaMan & Martian Manhunter, their own movies first! Green Arrow could be pulled in from the current TV show & ought to be since it's good & who he is and all, has been set up nicely!
-
Just keep it so tight lip and shut down that it a total shock and just have his voice booming in the dark cinema. "riddle me this bat..... guess who's back" lol bet the audience would shit their pants and cum at the same time.

by cameron
None. If WBros do make a JL movie the only sensible way is build it up like marvel did with the avengers. At least let us see how Man of Steel turns out and then confirm if there is to be a continuation of The Dark Knight with Levitt (which i seriously doubt) or we get the inevitable reboot in a few years time. i can't see a JL movie before 2016/7 at the earliest given that the whole Batman cycle has to settle and then be re done in say 3 or 4 years time..

It's more about having someone at the helm actually planning out this franchise, someone who knows the characters and the universe. Right now, it just seems like a rushed and poorly thought through attempt to get everything to the big screen as soon as possible. Marvel played the long game in bringing the Avengers to the big screen, DC seem to think they can simply bring all their characters together and it'll work from the off.

JGL as Batman works IF he's playing it as Bruce Wayne. Who cares if a few dunderheads are confused. That's better than having Robin play Batman in the Justice League. Justice League DOES NOT need to line up with Nolan's universe. It absolutely DOES NOT, especially when there's been no connective tissue or foreshadowing the way Marvel did.

WELLING nailed the character. Ultimarex, you're wrong about Welling. The producers (Showrunners not Welling) have said multiple times that they made the decisions with the suit. And as far as you Mikeywood - you're entitled to your opinion as is everyone else. Smallville had excellent storytelling, solid cast. Welling was perfect as Clark and the finale was terrific with him becoming Superman.

We know Batman, everyone does. In or out of continuity, he can appear without backstory. Appears from the shadows, and that kind of thing. Robin, Nightwing, whoever, it wouldn't matter.

by Randy
You only need the two most famous superheroes of all time to make a billion dollar movie. Set the groundwork of JLA with Superman and Batman learning to work together. Imagine how much fun that movie could be if Dini and Timm worked on the script, with a decent action director.
-
Darkseid is not the villain you start with if you're doing Justice League. He's the biggest, baddest villain that DC really has to offer. He's the villain that you build up to in a trilogy. You've gotta start smallish with the villains. Someone who's a definite threat but can be beaten. Then you go to someone like Brainiac, then you go do Darkseid.

The JLA movie can't begin with darkseid.

smaller > smallest the tv show just didnt get to many viewers IN COMPARISON to the number they are looking for for this movie. I watched it several times and liked the lex luthor actor. Thought Tom Welling did a decent job as well. I hope I do not see the Lana Lang actress in anything again , unless its late night on cinemax... But the shows wasnt even on a major network. Look up the ratings. Superman and Batman are the most well known heros EVER. and its not because of a CW tv show. With Supes and Batman in a movie, it should do Avengers size numbers easy. They shouldnt think SMALL for this movie.

NAILED THE COMIC BOOK MYTHOS OF THE CHARACTERS. I say this as someone who has read the comics and as someone who appreciated that Smallville got writers who worked on the comics and could write teleplays. Ultimarex - you're wrong - you need to read the articles/interviews with Welling. He was fine with wearing the suit. The showrunners who finished the series (Brian Peterson/Kelly Souders) said multiple times that they wanted to end the series exactly the way the Finale played. mikeywood and ultimarex, you two hate the show. That's fine. Many of us loved it. Let's leave it at that. Maybe the two of you will get your wish and Arm Hammer will get cast. Until WB even makes an official announcement about a Justice League movie, all the talk of villians and casting is just speculation anyway.

You start with Luthor and Capt. Marvel a la' Kingdom Come
by DonnyUnitas
Superman 2013 introduces Luthor at the end. Martian Manhunter Spring 2014 establishes an important, cosmic piece of the JLA, and can bring in ancillary characters - perhaps Hawkman. Have Luthor be present but not a factor in the story. Captain Marvel Summer 2014 - Stay away from the JLA storyline and do a summer blockbuster. He wins against the big bad, but ultimately comes under control of Luthor. Wonder Woman Winter 2014 - Amazonians wiped out. Diana survives. Once leader, now survivor. Begins falling for Billy Batson. Fights random big bad. Isn't let on to the fact Batson is brainwashed by Luthor. Finally, JLA 2015... Use that dynamic of the fallen hero and the super villain for a brains 'n braun combo that wreaks havoc. Lead it to vindication and death for Capt. Marvel. First appearance of new Batman turns the tide. Batman Summer 2017: Batman vs. Riddler. Lighter than Nolan tonally. Grounded, but not so damn bleak.

by UltimaRex
Welling lied (unconvincingly I might add) to safeguard his meal ticket after his movie career failed. Gee, what're the odds? Welling never wanted to play Superman. Welling never played Superman. Welling will never play Superman. In fact, I'd be surprised if he ever "acts" again now that he's a producer. Good. One less talentless block of wood on the screen.
-
Obviously. I had a youthful fascination with both characters. Darkseid pre-dates Thanos, but that's about it...Thanos is much more of a bad-ass and more has been done with his character. I can't see anybody even arguing against this, unless you're a DC apologist. Here's a good bgreakdown: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cx0dU3DEgkk

Again, you are incorrect. He was interviewed multiple times on the subject before the series finished production by reputable news sites, tv shows, and etertainment sites. DC spent too many years (okay, decades) giving their characters sidekicks, dogs with capes, and invisible jets. They finally started adding more grit and humanity to their comics in the 70s, but by then Marvel had been doing it since 1961. DC was 'the corny' publisher. To this day many of the mistakes DC has made in print and film linger in our collective psyche. But progress has been made. Nolan finally was able to erase years of abuse against Batman (from the 60's TV show all the way through Schumacher's neon crap-fests) and I'm hoping Man of Steel can do the same for some of the mistakes made involving Superman. The original Donner films (Superman I & II) were okay but somewhat of a cliche of Superman. Later films quickly de-volved into big steaming piles of awful. Superman Returns was just, well, not very good. As for Justice League... shit, I just don't know. If existing continuity from Nolan's bat-films and Man of Steel is used, as well as the same actors, it will be seen as a carbon copy of what Marvel Studios has been doing. If they don't, they have a cluttered mess on their hands and multiple continuity's going on at roughly the same time. They're kind of fucked either way. We all know this Justice League project is the direct result of the MASSIVE success that was Avengers. The real question we all need to be asking is: does the WB have enough sense to put this in the hands of someone who knows and cares about the characters? If they do that, they have a shot at making it work.

Sorry, I hate to say that, but I think that Warner should totally ditch Nolans vision right now. TDKR was a totally underwhelming film that left a disappointing taste, and to me, as good as TDK was, the definitive vision of Batman can be seen in Arkham City. That's the Bat that I want in a JL film, and on that basis I want Paul Dini involved. Otherwise, whilst Avengers 2 already has my $20, I will not be buying a ticket for JL, simple as that.

relaunch/reboot the Bat franchise in an entirely different direction?

How many fucking Batman reboots/remakes/reimaginings can we have? I've had enough of Batman, let him die, move on to something new please.
-
He's the only villain who can really stand up to Superman. It would be a battle between titans. I can see why they would pull him out of their ass for a JL movie though... just copying Marvel's path, plus they need a BIG THREAT for the world to freak out about. I wish Superman had ever been given a big threat (other than Zod etc.). Instead we get Luthor, Luthor, Luthor, Luthor. Oh, and Richard Pryor.

Don't be an idiot, Merrick. Of course Henry Cavill's Superman is going to be in Justice League. The whole reason this movie is being made is because Avengers made so much money. The real question is what to do with The Batman..
by thecomedian
I wouldn't mind a relaunched Batman in Justice League as long as we get the Batman we have yet to see in ANY of the film incarnations of the past 24 years. BATMAN AS THE INDOMITABLE BADASS, which is pretty much his only value in Justice League anyhow, especially during the JLI era and Morrison's run. If they want to dump an insane pile of money on Christian Bale's front lawn and just have his Batman come out of retirement yet again then that would work just as well. Either way I see no need for a total reboot of the character just because of Nolan's sour grapes.
-
I see where you're coming from. But I always liked Darkseid better, specifically because he was exactly that... an evil bad-ass without much character depth. Not an ounce of "identification" or story arc or human emotion... he's just a bastard, and a powerful one :)
-

frozenhero1, actually they're not fucked following Marvel's model if they differentiate themselves in story quality and "tone"...
by thecomedian
It would actually be kind of ironic if DC's movie verse were looked upon as more adult and "realistic" than Disney-fied Marvel since that's always been the argument for why Marvel was better amongst the Marvel Zombies. Tone wise it looks like Man of Steel will have the same somber feel as Nolan's Batman only with a bit more spectacle so I'm guessing that will be their play.
-
IF DC attempts to do an Avengers-style movie, it will be an epic fail. On the other hand, what? WHAT I ask you, could be a nerdier source material than the Lord of the Rings? Yet it made gazillions and won the Oscar. Because it was really well done and took the time to make it an up-front trilogy. I see this route as the only option that could result in a successful Justice League on film. However, I don't think WB/DC has enough faith in the JL to go this route, so it will be a middle-budget movie that is highly unlikely to be more than a break-even effort. In other words, WB/DC doesn't have the balls to do it right. BTW, when I was a kid (30 yers ago) whenever somehting was really corny, my brother and I would say "that's so DC" so DC does have a serous corniness factor to overcome, even though I currently prefer DC comics to Marvel.
-
If they're going to do a JLA movie that begins a DC cinematic universe don't you think the plot should be brought down to earth? Why can't it just be a combination of Lex Luthor and the Joker and some other villains doing something like, I dunno, stealing Wayne Enterprises technology and threatening some big city? Big giant outerspace bad guy kinda...sucks. And, yes, I know how much o a bad ass Darkseid is but we need to establish the JLA first and what they can do but what's left after facing the baddest motherfucker in the entire DCU? And can I say, this reeks of Geoff Johns. Great comic writer, shitty film producer (and he is DC Entertainment's Chief Creative Officer so this kind of decision falls well within his domain). Geoff, seriously, don't blow your wad on the big shit. Save dessert for last. Parallax was one of the reasons Green Lantern sucked so fucking badly, no you want to double down on fucking Darkseid? Jesus, no...just no. At this rate the JLA movie is going to fucking suck.

I have it on gooooood authority. You guys know me from many years of blowing shit wide open. Well Warners is going Crisis with the entire DC everything! You will see Chris Reeves as superman, Henry Cavil, Micheal Keaton Batman, Gordon-Levit batman and robin, etc. This is how they plan to play catch-up. Everything! Even the 60s batman show is now alternate universe canon that they will elude too. We're talking the greatest superheroes with at least 4 members that could take on hulk. Give flash an adamantium knife and he could shred hulk to ribbons in a nano-second. Anyways my friend that does previz showed me some stuff and it looks to me like everything that has been in the DC movie universe is included. This is bigger than anything guys.

If Man of Steel bombs, JLA will probably get pushed back. Why people keep talking about JGL as Batanything is stupid. First, he's like 4 inches shorter than Bale, and has about half his muscle mass. No one is going to buy a short, skinny Batman beating up some of DC's nastiest villains. Second, if he's not Bruce Wayne, people will get confused. At the end of Rises, we see the city honoring Batman with a statue for his (supposed) ultimate sacrifice in saving it. JGL is given directions to the cave. Bruce even tells JGL's character that he needs to wear a mask to protect the people he cares about. He never once suggest he's to be the next Batman, but someone who can protect the city. While he a decent actor, he does not fit the part. Not happening despite any rumors I bet. That and mixing the Nolanverse with the rest of the DC Universe just does not work. It's never even suggested once, that anyone in the Nolan movies has a superpower, or there are any other super powered entities around. Certainly no Superman. He could have found Bane and Talia's bomb, and zipped it out of the city before they knew what happened. No, someone else will be Batman.
-
Because "fuck it." Make it campy and stupid on purpose. . . after seeing the recent Superman and Star Trek posters, I am pretty tired of THE DARK SERIOUS ANTIHERO shit.
-
...keep in mind one thing: They showed Thanos for about 2 seconds. Most "average" movie-goers had A) no idea what just happened and B) no idea who the hell it was. It's doubtful anyone other than nerds like us will even look at Darkseid and say "HEY! He looks just like that guy who we saw in extreme close-up profile for two seconds at the end of Avengers!" In FACT, the "average movie-goer" MAY even think he's the SAME GUY and not even give a damn. They don't know Marvel from DC. They don't CARE.
-
Justice League Unlimited and the 90's Animated series. Those are still the best representations of that character in any non-comic medium, and its not even close.

by bongo dummy
Bleh! Darkseid is like DC Comics version of Jack Kirby's vision of the Devil. About that: DC already has the Decil as a DC character. I don't know if they have God but they do have gods, too. So, if you have Darkseid, do you shuck the rest of the New Gods, too? Do you forget about Darkseid's son? About his number one enemy? Does it take place on Earth or on Apokolips? On both? It just seems like there are other villains to choose from. Obviously, the Powers That Are want the story in this movie to be HUGE! But, there's so many ways of doing this that don't include interstellar galaxy hopping. The thing about all of the superhero movies so far is that the threat is on Earth, right? Even Green Lantern took it off-world but brought it right back home, lamely, pathetically. It would be cool to be pleasantly surprised at where this goes. However, for those complaining about it, let's wait until there is more gas for the fire. Sure, they could screw this up, just like Marvel could have screwed up The Avengers. Agreed that, Geoff Johns is over rated. He's a hack who things he finds the Golden Fleece in revamping stuff, right? Not from what I've seen. Personally, I don't think there are too many people who could get the right story for this. Maybe Alan Moore. Maybe. But, everyone else would bow down to the Must Include This or That mentality and make it less clever. Like, The Avengers movie constantly winking at everything else, movies and geek secrets. Not many could get this right. Maybe they will just make it some brainless, pablum with lots of explosions and other special effects. And Heavy Metal music. Too predictable? Nah. Just expect that much.

by Christian Sylvain
Yes, bring in Darkseid when we haven't had a single SUPERMAN movie that's ever introduced him to the movie going public. Better yet, why the fuck would people care about any of these characters on the screen without any knowledge of their back stories or development in the first place? Fuck this Warner/DC rush job. Fuck it in the ass.
-
They should build up to him over a couple films, like Marvel are doing with the Avengers/Thanos. Start with something smaller like the Legion of Doom or Brainiac. So many story lines they can choose from to get the league together without blowing their wad in the first film.
-
After Thanos,EVERYONE EVERYWHERE is going to see it as DC copying Marvel. They're going to use the JLA movie to introduce the new League members, correct? So why not use the movie to introduce their villains as well via The Legion Of Doom? Throw in Starro and some White Martians, have the JLA kick ALLLLL their asses, and you've got yourself a movie worthy of the name JLA. Stop thinking small Warners....you've got the greatest characters ever in the history of comics...you can EASILY come from behind and blow Marvel out of the water,if you only stop hampering yourselves. The WB is its own worst enemy...get over Nolan and embrace your history instead of running from it.

Here's a conversation between every comic-guy and the girl he's trying to convince to go to see a Justice League movie: <br><br> GF: Ok, so I know Superman...and I know Batman...who are the rest of these guys?<br> <br><br> CG: That's Aquaman. He uh...swims...and talks to fish.<br> GF: He's wearing speedos and booties...<br> CG: Yeah that's because...that's...that's just what you wear in Atlantis.<br> GF: And how does being able to talk to fish make you even remotely eligible to be on a team of superheroes?<br> CG: It just does.<br> <br><br> CG: That's Wonderwoman. She's an Amazon princess.<br> GF: Who flies around in an invisible plane...<br> CG: who flies around in an invisible plane, yes.<br> GF: And she lassos people, and her lasso makes them tell the truth?<br> CG: yes.<br> GF: and her wristbands deflect bullets?<br> CG: Yes.<br> GF: 1. Why is the princess of a proud race of empowered women dressed like a hooker? 2. On the off chance that more than 2 bullets are being shot at her at once, reflective wristbands seems like a pretty ridiculous method of self defense, don't they? I mean, why wouldn't she wear a whole outfit made of the wristband stuff? 3. Unless she's facing an army of evil cows, the lasso seems a little inefficient as a crime-fighting tool, doesn't it? 4. Why is her hooker outfit covered in stars and stripes? Isn't she from the Amazon? <br> CG: Because she's proud of her new American home? I don't really know, I've never really been clear on that...<br> GF: ...because I mean, it's kind of like if Aquaman, upon rising from the sea decided that he really liked Scotland, and started wearing Scottish flag clothing. It's a little convoluted and confusing for a superhero costume. "Hey, you must be Scotland Man!" 'nope, I'm Aquaman'. "But you're from Scotland?". 'no, I'm from Atlantis. I just really like Scotland' "o-kaaaaay"<br> <br><br> GF: and this guy is...<br> CG: The Martian Manhun..<br> GF: NEXT<br> <br> <br> CG: This is Green Lantern.<br> GF: Oh I remember this guy, that movie with Ryan Reynolds in it. He points his little ring at someone, and rather than just blasting them with a death ray, instead a big green fist comes out and punches them. That movie was really, really gay.<br> CG: yeah, kind of, but it's a lot cooler than...<br> GF: It's still pretty gay.<br> <br><br> GF: And this guy with the eagle hat, what's his deal?<br> CG: That's Hawkman. He's the re-incarnation of an Egyptian prince who's magic harness made of Nth Metal...<br> GF: Shut the fuck up. Now I know you're just fucking with me...<br>

Just like last time. And the time before that. And the time before that.
-
They can't setup the characters first because most of them are so loopy that if they try and make an authentic big screen translation, it's going to look absolutely ridiculous. The only way to make these things filmable is to Nolan it up to the point that the 'real world' incarnations of these characters bear no resemblance to the comics whatsoever, resulting in a product that pleases no one and is ultimately pointless. Green Lantern flopped not because of the script, or the pacing, or Ryan Reynolds. Marvel kind of fluked out a bit with the Avengers because they were able to ground a significant portion of it in reality without drastically altering the identities of the heroes, high tech armor, genetic enhancement experiments gone wrong, aliens. We all just kind of gave Thor a pass and pretended he wasn't 200 points higher on the ridiculousness scale than everything else in the movie. <br><br>But you can't really do that with the main DC properties. Take Wonder Woman for example. You remove the ridiculous aspects, the invisible plane, the hooker outfit, the bullet deflecting wristbands, the truth lasso...what are you left with? A movie about a strong girl wearing black leather, punching and kicking people? Not really Wonder Woman at this point...Same goes with Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, Hawkman. You could get away with the Flash, and to a lesser extent, the Green Lantern. But ultimately, the biggest problem with a JLA movie is...Superman is in it. It's sort of the reason why Heroes bombed so bad after Season 1. When you have a character with a Godlike power, the storylines all have to constantly incorporate reasons why the guy with the God power isn't available or able to use it. <br><br>I'm telling you the God's honest truth here, not as a hater, as a realist who hasn't been blinded by personal investment and nostalgia. Justice League will NEVER work as a big screen property. People can accept the unbelievable when the property is pure fantasy. But if it involves a fantastic scenario intermingling with a real world scenario, there is a tricky balance of suspension of disbelief that needs to be achieved for it to work with a broad audience. And the Justice League requires far too much of a suspension of disbelief, as it's characters are all over the map of fantastic scenarios. Guy from Mars, guy from Atlantis, a magic Amazon princess, a re-incarnated magic Egyptian prince, a guy with a magic ring he got from the space police, an orphan from outside our solar system...it's just a little too silly for non-comic readers when you say it out loud. Green Lantern failed as a movie not because of shitty writing, pacing, or Ryan Reynolds. It failed because it was doomed to fail, because when you present an audience with a 'this could happen in OUR world, this could be your city, this could be you' scenario, and then barrage them with things they can't easily relate to, you're fighting a losing battle. Again, Avengers skirted this line pretty closely. At the point where purple guys on flying motorbikes started coming out of the sky, that 'Green Lantern' feeling started to set in a bit. But they only dialed it up as much as they had to and kept it as identifiable as they could, given the subject matter. But it's really asking to much to skirt that same line with a JLA movie. Let's just stick to making good JLA cartoons. I think a 'Mask of the Phantasm' quality level JLA animated feature would do us all a lot more good than trying to shed the cold, harsh spotlight of reality on those guys.
-
....White Martians would have been a much cooler choice. He respected the history of the characters while moving forward, Batman was also written damn well in a team (not many writers can pull it off)

Plus, Wonder Woman has huge potential appeal to a female audience and certainly more so than Black Widow. But, it should be the Legion of Doom. By choosing Darkseid DC is basically saying we are going to copy Marvel. Having the Legion of Doom be the big bad would set this apart.

I don't think anyone's claiming that Darkseid is a ripoff of Thanos. What some people are saying is that by using a villain similar to Thanos in this film, DC is aping Marvel, since Marvel has already rolled out Thanos. Even though Darkseid is an older character. My take is that Marvel went with Thanos to steal DC's thunder. They know that Darkseid is the best villain DC's got, and they're going to take their rival down a peg by using their villain first. Meanwhile, Marvel has loads of good villains left to use later. I like Kirby's crazy characters. I think Hollywood and the general public are too uptight to appreciate them, but I would like to see Darkseid done right, even if DC gets flack for supposedly aping Marvel.

He certainly hates Superman enough. He doesn't even need to act. Which is good since he can't act anyway...
-
Let me do your job for you since you are not even going to try and do it right. Post credits of Man of Steel: Batman (Chriatian Bale) and Night Wing (JGL) approach Superman (Henry Cavill), throw down a file showing showing "INTERGANG". Bat tell's him that they have infiltrated both Gotham and Metropolis and he needs his help. On the Bluray of Man of Steel, include a 20 min short on Night Wing's creation. Batman has left but with help of Wayne Industries he creates his suit, trains and starts fighting crime. Batman returns and they start working together. Flash foward to Justice Leauge; Batman, Night Wing and Superman are fighting intergang when Kalibak steps through a Boom Tube and kicks the shit out of the 3 of them. They regroup and call upon Wonder Woman, Green Latern & Aquaman and defeat Kalibak. Before Kaliback escapes he promises his father arrival. It ends with a Wayne Corp contruction site where the 6 of them say they will be ready for whatever dangers are awaiting Earth. Cast young relitivlly woung Stars for Green Lantern and Wonder Woman, and an older really ripped guy for Aquaman and you are set. You can give me a writting credit.
-
The thing most people forget is that despite the bad script, horrible acting, and cheese, Green Lantern still made 250 million at the box office. I have no doubt that if the movie turned out good and had better marketing, it would've made even more money. You'd be surprised how far into cheese a movie can go and still be successful. Hell, even Thor was universally liked, and that was nothing more than a powerless god goofing off for 2 1/2 hours. I think those characters you mentioned can be brought to the screen faithfully while adding a sense of depth and realism, the same way they have with other superheros; an update. With Wonder Woman, they could switch the iconic bikini for battle armor and still look like the source material without suspending disbelief. Or with Aquaman, they could play off the "king of the seas" angle and add that Majesticism/authority to the character to make him seem less wimpy. There's so many possibilities for these characters, I just think all it takes is the right commitment and vision. I mean twenty years ago, I never would've guessed that we'd get any big budget Marvel movies, yet here we are.

by Gabe Athouse
Same thing here. Just because Thanos didn't come first doesn't mean Darkseid is the better character.
-
Marvel did it the right way taking its time to introduce the avengers individually thus allowing their own movies to do character development, and thus allowing us to just look forward to the Avengers meeting and do their thing. Again stating the obvious but WB is just trying to make a quick buck in copying the Avengers. WB need to pay a littloe more attention to what Marvel did instead of molesting their own franchise with an ill conceived concept. It doesn't matter who the damned villain is, it will still suck.
-
Not cheap like the Spider-man remake which was shit. Marvel just let Wheedon do his thing and look what we got. WB needs to step back and let JLA be an epic movie.
