MONSTER UNIVERSITY has a new Poster
Hey folks, Harry here with probably one of the Great Gotta Sees of 2013's posters. Headline spoils it, but MONSTER UNIVERSITY just looks like a film that many of us have been hankering for... for a very long time. I'm so curious to see how the monster loving maniacs at Pixar have peppered their film with in-jokes for those that know their monsters, monster creators and monster history. AND - I must admit, I would love a sparkling vampire joke. I would.
Here's the poster:

Brian Lynch pointed me at this International FRENCH Poster, which is... well even better:

I hope this is a return to form for Pixar. I had no interest in Cars 2 and Brave was kind of boring (but beautiful). What are they going to leave on their doorknob to let the other roommate know that he's closing some monster ass? www.nonipplesonthesuit.com

Sequels, prequels, and 3-D re-releases mark the end of a pretty stellar run. I'll take third-rate 80's Disney movies over crap like CARS 2 any day of the week.

It was one helluva 15 year run of execellence. No other studio has even come close to that kind of financial/artistic success. I blame the Cars movies.

I have no problem with Pixar sequels. Toy Story 2 and 3 anyone?
by Deceased Fan
I haven't seen Cars 2 yet probably because the Cars DVD was on loop at my house for at least 2 years straight. Also I didn't have high hopes given Cars was at the bottom of my Pixar list, but Monster's Inc. was great.

I jacked off all day incase anyone wondered.

Seriously, dahveed, it's like you've never heard of Disney. And Toy Story 2 to Cars was 7 years, not 15.
by Baked
Because A Bug's Life was unimaginative shit and if it weren't for the fact that Pixar had blown everybody away with Toy Story, they wouldn't have gotten the benefit of the doubt nearly as much. By the way, considering Pixar's release schedule of 2-3 years between movies, we're talking a hot 4-movie streak. But seriously, A Bug's Life was crap.
-
Toy Story and Bung's Life were three years apart. That's the longest stretch they've had. Of the last 15 years, they've released a movie in all but three.

You know, if they ever make Incredibles 2, it'll probably suck
by Drath
Just because I wanted it so much more than all this other shit they thought should be made instead. To be fair, loved Monster Inc, so I want to spend more time with the characters too, but still, dammit, every sequel/prequel that isn't to the Incredibles makes me hate Pixar ever so slightly more.
-
The Toy Story movies are the exception to the rule. Cars 2 was their first big critical bomb, and who was asking for a Monsters Inc. PREQUEL with Sully & Mike in college, or a sequel to Finding Nemo? Pixar needs to knuckle down and start cranking out classic ORIGINAL films again, lest they become Dreamworks/Blue Sky and do nothing but crank out one sequel after another.

If Brave had been the masterpiece it could have I would give MU a pass
by performingmonkey
As it stands, I'm waiting for this mediocre Pixar run to end! Okay, MU could be lots of fun, but it can't possibly be up there with the likes of Ratatouille, Incredibles and Wall-E. They need to make another one of those to win me back.
-
...Stifler's Mom just said it all.
-
maybe topped by Up and TS3. and cars 2 wasn't bad at all. I guess most people are just put off by the thought of talking cars and wouldn't even give it a shot....
-
How could anyone say Cars 2 wasn't bad at all? It was one huge misstep from the minute Lasseter decided to make Mater the main character. It is the only truly bad Pixar movie.
-
I don't think it's their "best" but CARS is a nice little movie. I can't win the argument, but I guarantee that 75% of the venom spewed at this movie is pure resentment of NASCAR and Larry the Cable Guy that the haters cannot get over. The "cruising" scene, when the town gets lit up again after years of neglect, was heartwarming. And while I loathe Larry the Cable guy, I just can't find fault with him as Mater. Sure, it would have been nice to get Jim Varney, but you can't really do anything about that.
-
Cars 2 did have a bit of stink to it.
-
This phase Pixar is in can't end soon enough. I'm not against sequels if they roll out an original film between sequels. One for them, one for us - it's a business, I get that. But when both their last sequel AND their last original film were largely underwhelming, a compromise like that just becomes infuriating. From trailer one, Brave seemed like the Pixar response to How to Train Your Dragon (which I thought was Dreamworks' greatest effort by a longshot). The fact that Brave didn't even come close to matching the quality of Dragon kind of makes me throw my arms up in defeat. There's no sense in hating on Pixar for its sequel projects if they can't even make great originals anymore, either.

they make like one good movie, 2 mediocre the rest are garbage but you have those great ones. here's my list... The Incredibles.... Needs a fucking sequel had alot of fun watching. Toy Story Series... C'mon admit it, you had fun watching it... Up... I felt so sorry for the main character when his wife died. right in the heart... that solidified it for me. Wall=E... Visually amazing in blu-ray and poignant to the future of the human race and love between robots. great story pixar. the rest is garbage...
-
Thank you! Finally someone who gets it. Pixar movies as a whole suck! Couple ok movies.
-
Ok, I get that point. thing is that I am not american and have close to zero knowledge of nascar and have absolutely no idea what Larry the Cableguy did apart from cars 1&2. and yes darthkitten, I actually enjoyed cars 2 for the great animations and michael caine, who I admire a lot. yes mater is annoying, but it didn't ruin the movie for me...
-
Sequels are never good!

http://monsterama.blogspot.com/2006/01/monsters-ick.html http://www.shlaw.com/news/item.php?item_id=000030 Hey how about a prequel where these shitty movies never happened and this guy actually got to make his movie?
-
All of the shit looks exactly the same. The same overused animations over and over again. All the faces look exactly the same. The animation isn't even good by modern standards. You guys need to grow the fuck up.
-
Looking forward to a sequel to Monsters Inc. Seriously, not all PIXAR movies are to my taste, but they do rock when it comes to animation. Now Brave was actually a nice movie, but I never saw either CARS or CARS 2. I have no appeal to see a talking car.

My 6 year old totally idolises Cars 2... It's hard for some people here to understand, but not all films are made for 18 year old spotty sci-fi geeks. (and even that group have been well catered by Pixar with The Incredibles and Wall-E... )

I know they're bad but as for the new ones (brave, ralph, up), are they not made for children anyways? Is it maybe not that the movies are getting worse but you motherfuckers are becoming older, jaded, and joyless? I'm wondering how kids felt about these movies. I know a few kids that are absolutely CRAZY for those shitty Cars movies. I'm not sure why. It might have something to do with them being CHILDREN.

My daughter wasn't even born when Monsters Inc was released...
by workshed
...but she flipped her wig when she saw these posters. Mike and Sully are loved by kids the world over and if some of you cynical gits can't see that this film is going to do $1billion all day long you're mad. As Toy Story 3 showed, ten years is the perfect gap for a worthy sequel. Surprised a Nemo/Incredibles sequel isn't on the cards already. You may be right that the 'Golden Age of Pixar' is over, though I wouldn't count on the drought lasting too long as there is some class talent being honed to take over from the masters.
-

Monsters Inc is class. Looking forward to taking my little girl to see this!
by BiggusDickus
And I agree with whoever said Cars and Cars 2 were bad. And apart from the first half, Wall-E was crap, too...
-
Actually, there is a Nemo sequel in development. Pixar takes a while with pre-production, so it's probably a few years off, but it's lined up. Andrew Stanton will be back as well.
-
Since the first film ended with the whole laughter is better then scares, or something, and this one, at least from the posters, looks to be pretty immersed in scares again, wonder what the arc of the story is.

They have all the characters in their servers. Think of the time and money they save by just using the same characters they've already rendered. The only disadvantage is that there aren't new toys to sell.

Kung Fu Panda has been touted as "being six parts" from the beginning, and How To Train Your Dragon has both 2 and 3 with with years already slated for release, not to mention crappy TV series with stand-in cast. Other studios jump on the sequals the *instant* anything is a success. Cars 2 has plenty of issues but you can't say it is more of the same; it goes off at such a tangent. The last film they put out was something *totally* original, no source material like, say, How To Train, and they have two upcoming movies (men and evolved dinos living together, and "a journey into the mind") which are totally original. What more do you expect from a studio that still "only" puts out one film a year?

What's the difference between Disney and Pixar movies now anyway?
by CharlesG
Pixar is just following old Disney plots now -- "Brave" followed the Disney Princess story template almost precisely, and "Monster University" sounds like it could be right out of Disney's Medfield College series (e.g., the "Flubber" films), and Disney has been doing computer animation for years. Would anyone have thought twice if "Wreck-It Ralph" had been labeled a Pixar movie?

by Somerichs
Most of my books in school had that exact sticker...
-
...and thought is was beautifully rendered, but oddly uninvolving. However, my kids loved it and watched it three times in a row, so what does an adult who expects to be entertained by a children's movie know anyway? Thinking about it again, I can see why the story resonated with them, and I appreciated that they toned the violence down this time. They are looking forward to this one a lot.

Poor fanboys.
-
This was one hell of a run, wasn't it? So many good movies in a row? I say give them a few mullagens. They've earned it.
-
I'd love to hear some sources on this. I know alumni at my college who have worked at pixar so I'd LOVE to know where you're getting that.
-
Monsters Inc was a beautiful, heartwarming film that still gives me a lump in the throat at the end. My daughter absolutely loved it; she laughed, she was scared, she was happy, and she cried at the end - watching it together was an experience I'll always remember, and I'd love to take her to see a sequel. Seriously, what the hell is wrong with you people?

Yup, same book sticker. Now what I really wonder is if we'll get a scene where a used book costs $152 screams and then they bring it back for the exchange program and they say the book can't be returned because it's been replaced with a new edition even though the school has said they can't afford new editions of anything.
-
So how the last one was basically the Magnificent 7 this one will be Man in the Iron Mask....with bugs.
-
The fickle fanboy winds have finally turned against Pixar. I'm shocked it took this long.
-
Are the monsters gonna fight against a crusty dean, in the course of trying to get laid?

a shame we had to endure Cars II before this
-
From HitFix: "The nominations for the 40th annual Annie Awards were announced today, and Disney had to be all smiles with 27 nominations across four feature films in play. And it was "Brave" and "Wreck-It Ralph" from that stable that led the pack, along with DreamWorks Animation's "Rise of the Guardians," with 10 nominations apiece. <BR> Not far behind was "Hotel Transylvania" and "ParaNorman" with eight nods each.... The other DreamWorks entry in play, "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted," brought in four nods...." <BR> Saw "Wreck-It Ralph" yesterday- excellent flick.
-
And Brave was barely watchable. Not much there that Disney wasn't doing 20 years ago. Well, Pixar had a good run but it is over.

if every movie ever made was judged only by talk backers on this site....there wouldnt be a single fucking movie ever made that wasnt an overrated piece of giant shit. like someone noted earlier...if there was a thread about oxygen on here...20 douchebags would show up and say it was overrated and shitty. i'd put monsters inc at number 4 on my pixar movie list, behind up - toy story - and nemo. this looks like a great idea for a prequel to me. and judging by the handling of the toy story sequels, i have no problem with pixar looking to further explore and expand this little corner of their universe. im excited about this childrens movie. fuck you haters.
-
Seriously. I dozed off for a few minutes part way through. Now I liked the original Cars movie, thought it had some heart but Cars2 was just a cynical cash grab. My kids haven't re-watched it either unlike the original. Personally Monsters Inc is my own favourite Pixar movie so I hope they knock the sequel out of the park. Saw Brave this week too, it was okay but it no 'How to train your Dragon '

Monsters Inc was my favorite movie and I'm so excited to take my daughter to see Monsters University for her first movie theater experience
