The DVD PICKS & PEEKS App for I-devices is LIVE!!! On Sale $1.99 through Monday Dec 3rd!

Published at: Nov. 30, 2012, 7:19 p.m. CST by AICNStaff

Hey folks, Harry here...  We've been talking about this app going live since about March of this year.   Well, the App Developer, an awesome chap named Mike Muegel - who is one of you.   A reader of AICN, that gets frustrated by the stone-age technological limitations of AICN.   But rather than dedicate his life to bitchin' about it, he decided to build an APP.    The one that leapt to his mind, independently of talking to us, was a DVD PICKS & PEEKS app.   He loves my DVD column and he wished that there was a way to organize all those write-ups and let them be searchable on a per Title basis.

In secret, he slaved away at his work station, pursuing his dream of making my DVD column more than what it is essentially, which is a once a week (hopefully) endeavour.  Once he had a pretty complete but barebones version, he reached out to me.

NOW - ever since I've had an iPad, I've wanted an APP, and I had told Roro & Moises that it had to be a DVD PICKS & PEEKS app - because that's what I've gotten so much feedback on.   I really can't tell you how many folks have approached me wanting this app.   Along with a larger APP that incorporates everything about the site.  That will happen, but the cost of doing it is outside of our means - this APP's success will help AICN to upgrade technologically (we're almost out of a situation that could be compared to the La Brea Tar Pit).

The Money raised by the sales of this APP go directly into AICN's Coffers and to Mike Muegel - a fan that dreamt of this app and built it, worked with us, worked with our Beta Testers and in my book...  he's a real AICN champion!!!

NOW - from this point till Monday, the app will be priced at a special start up sale of $1.99.   Tuesday, it'll be $2.99.   I totally understand if you hold off till Tuesday because you want to give back to AICN a bit more, but for those of you can't imagine spending an extra dollar on us, well, that's what this Sale is for!  :)

Here's where you can get the app:  PICKSandPEEKS.com

It explains all the features and how the app integrates with other apps you have.

ANDROID Users...  I understand.  You hate us.   I'm kidding, you're hurt that you're not included.   Well, we started with the i-Devices because I'm an Apple freak.   However, my wife, YOKO, is an Android user and Mike is already at work developing the Android version of the APP.   Again, it depends how sales go on this one.

The APP will be updated with all new DVD column content as they go live.   And also, feel free to send back feedback because we really do want to make this app the best we can.

I just love that I can alphabetically browse all the DVD column write-ups, add stuff to my Netflix queue or just start watching it.   And, the collection builder is fun too.   Go check it out and reward Mike's hard work.   Now, what's your dream for AICN and how are you willing to help achieve it?

I'll just stick with my bluray.com app

    by Ash Talon

My bluray.com app lets me track my collection, scan in new titles, allows me to look at their entries on all titles, and purchase any title via Amazon. Their reviews are a hell of a lot more informative than any of Harry's, too. Harry's reviews are only usually a few incoherent "sentences." <P> I still like and appreciate Harry's efforts. However, there are far better alternatives out there.

The site has earned a little financial support from us...

    by HansBubi

...considering many of us have been visiting for years (during the "glory days" of the website if you will). The DVD column is the easiest-to-click-and-read feature on the website, and so in a way it could be considered the most popular feature, yet it's also probably the most complained about feature. So, I'm sure many of us have not been craving an App...I think many would rather the column just be more in-depth and posted with more consistency. If Harry announced that he would put more time, thought, and detail into the DVD column's reviews, and if he asked for donations (Wikipedia-style) as a side note, I would actually be more willing to shell out money rather than pay for an App for a column that has consistently been the website's most-potential-but-most-flawed feature. I do wish Harry and the website the best, so I hope this App leads to bigger and better things.

  • Nov. 30, 2012, 7:46 p.m. CST

Let's be honest. If the app was free, it would be overpriced.

  • Or Monte's Criterion reviews?

  • Nov. 30, 2012, 8:19 p.m. CST

There are no other reviewers on this site.

Don't let Harry hear you mention any of those made up names again or he will do a wheelchair burnout on your forehead while squeeling like a four year old girl.

    by t9mike

Hi all. This is definitely not a vanity project from Harry. I did it all on my own and approached Harry for approval. But really I did this not for a few coins but for love of the column and site. And for the fun of it! Harry has written over 440,000+ words in reviews spanning 171 columns since 2005. So I see this as first and foremost a reference, that also happens to be updated over time. So I hope you enjoy it, but I totally get that it is not for everyone. But I personally really enjoy randomly surfing through old Blus and DVDs finding hidden gems, and wishing I had more time to watch movies!

  • Nov. 30, 2012, 10:02 p.m. CST

I guess you have to think of it as charityware...

    by Kelleytoons

Which is not to disparage the developer, but as a few have pointed out, this is overpriced at almost any cost, there being far applications out there that do this and much more. So if you buy this I'd say do it as a donation for this site and that only -- and there's no harm in that, if that's how you feel. Personally, while I enjoy this site, I feel there are many, many, many more worthwhile charities to contribute to (but anyone is free to do anything they want with their hard-earned dollars in today's brutal economy).

  • Wtf, you really make so little money off this site harry?

  • Nov. 30, 2012, 10:16 p.m. CST

Mobile version of AICN is what I really want…

    by Finnias

hopefully my two bucks can help make that happen someday.

  • Nov. 30, 2012, 10:41 p.m. CST

Now all you have to do is write the damn column. On time.

    by Logan_1973

Not paying until they get caught up. And stay timely. But thanks for the effort, man.

  • I appreciate the work the developer put in and the need to monetize the site but I need a little more than an app that archives the least interesting and least reliable part of the site. Not for nothing Knowles but if I want to read product descriptions I'll go directly to Amazon, they'll even be up before the Dvd is discontinued. Create a mobile app with talkback capability and I'm in on day one and probably for another dollar or two. For this? You've got to be kidding.

  • I like the column. It's not just a list of all movies released that week, nor is it an official movie review column - it's a list of the movies Harry feels should be brought to our attention, with little blurbs detailing what he feels about that movie. It's my favorite part of the site, I use it to keep up with the movie releases I'm interested in owning, and prefer it to some other site that just gives exhaustive lists of every single disc released that week. It does disappoint me when the column is missed, however - in my opinion there should be two high priorities with this site, and everything else should take a backseat: the DVD column, and movie news. It was obvious this last year that Harry considered the show (which I never wanted to see, I come here to read, not watch videos) as much higher priority, which sucked. So I'll buy the app, but I sure won't be happy if I paid $2 for it and then the column started disappearing again.

An App for the least updated column you have!?

    by DrGogol

And you want us to PAY for the column you go MONTHS not updating? Are you freaking serious!? I would even consider it if you weren't half-assing the column now. Tiny little blurbs that have less info than the Amazon comments section. Screw that. I'll check in every couple of months to read the column online. That's how often they come out anyway. And it's FREE!

    by Robbiemc9

I will also stick with Bluray.com. Gave up waiting on Harry and got bored with his obesity induced hypochondria. I only come here now for the talk backs which are the funniest on the net but even now I am slowly gravitating towards Dark Horizons for that to. Sorry Harold. You started a good thing but didn't manage to change with the times quick enough.

This talkback is the place empathy comes to die.

    by HELLSFOXES

Harry has given us a lot of free entertainment over the years. It's sad that when the site comes under threat of closure, when he has to look to his fans and community for support, never begging for money but trying to offer his hard crafted entertainment through surgery and life changing times for us to buy, there can even be a question of giving him our support. Even those of us that criticize Harry's direct contribution to the site in recent years, who have lost some interest in his words, can agree that whatever opinions we do come here for, they are all under the house that Harry built and his legacy inspires us enough to come back to the site so regularly. I will definitely be getting this app. If they can include a comprehensive database of what blurays are coming out each Tuesday, with or without reviews so we can follow all release dates.... I would use this a lot.

  • Dec. 1, 2012, 8:09 a.m. CST

I picked it up last night.

    by End_Of_Line

It's a fun app to play with. Come on people, its $2 to $3 it ain't gonna break the bank. If you come here regularly, support the site. That said, Harry, if people are putting up that $3, YOU have to show your appreciation of that by being more consistent. It would also be great if you could go back and add an update to titles in the app that you said something along the line of "Haven't checked this one out yet." or "Picking this one up tomorrow." I can see this is a great first step, and hats off to the developer for ease of use and the look and feel of the app. It's fun to read some of these older reviews. Many of these are before the blu craze, and some of those titles have since seen blu upgrades so would be good to note those. Last small gripe, the Netflix link throws you to the Netflix website, not to the Netflix app. Would be more streamlined to go directly to the app if it is available .on instant watch, and how about adding Amazon Prime if you subscribe. Keep it up, Gents.

    by t9mike

Definitely lots more that can be done w/ Netflix, like telling you whether a movie is available for streaming. But in the short term let me see about launching the app vs. Website. Then finishing up Android version is top priority. And of course my awesome day job :-).

    Neat App

    by Bodacious_Crumb

Although Netflix has the fucking worst app themselves. You should be able to manage your DVD queue on that sucker rather than just play their limited streaming content. Still, I'd love to see an AICN mobile site. Make it happen.

    Honest pricing reflection

    by John Brown

I'm not trying to flame the app or Harry or anything. The DVD column is my favorite one on this site, and making a mobile version is a great thing. But I do want to bring up the price. A cursory look at all the movie review apps for iOS seems to show that most movie review apps are free. The only "name" ones that charge (that I see) are Ebert's "Great Movies" app for $.99 and Leonard Maltin's app for $1.99. And Maltin's app is the iOS version of his Movie Guide...a treasured and vast resource for information on 25,000 movies with not just links to, but actual integration with Netflix, IMDB, and iTunes. I'm not sure how I can see, then, Harry's app justifying a $1.99 price, much less $2.99. I appreciate that Harry is trying to show it as a way to support the site, but the average app shopper won't see it that way--they'll just see an app that costs too much. I think it would be better to have a Kickstarter campaign or something like that for fundraising than to waaay overcharge for a VERY limited app. If I pay 2 or 3 bucks for an app, I need to feel I'm getting more than just an iOS version of information that's also on the web free of charge. I'd encourage you to think hard about the pricing, my friend. Make it $.99 like Ebert's or something. Then start a Kickstarter campaign if you want to raise money to bring AICN forward technologically. I'd contribute to that.

  • A reader of AICN, that gets frustrated by the stone-age technological limitations of AICN. But rather than dedicate his life to bitchin' about it, he decided to build an APP.

  • You're a real cunt.

  • THE ANSWER IS D) ALL OF THE FUCKING ABOVE YOU LYING PIECE OF SHIT!! FIRST OF ALL IT'S NOT OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO IMPROVE THE SITE, IT'S YOURS! SECOND OF ALL WE ALL IMPROVE IT ALREADY BECAUSE THE ONLY REASON ANYONE FUCKING COMES HERE ANYMORE IS THE TALKBACKS!!!! FACT!!!!!!!! THIRD, NOT A DAY FUCKING GOES BY WHERE PEOPLE DON'T OFFER TO HELP RUN THIS FUCKING SITE BETTER AND YOU SIT THERE AND THROW TEMPER TANTRUMS ABOUT HOW YOU'RE NOT GIVING UP THE DVD COLUMN BECAUSE YOU LOOOOVE IT SO MUCH, WELL APPARENTLY NOT BECAUSE YOU EITHER DON'T DO IT OR HALF ASS IT!!! FUCK YOU.

    covjack: pricing

    by t9mike

Balancing act on how much to do on initial 1.0 release. Only so much you want to expend in time and energy if you are not sure the market is there given this was a one man skunkworks in my free time. Not everyone shares Harry's broad and quirky taste in movies that we all seem to. I also did not see this as mainstream as an Ebert or Maltin, so you just don't want to go overboard on 1.0. And Harry will be the first one to tell you: he is not a full-time reviewer like Ebert and Maltin. So a smaller potential audience for this app, which is somewhat reflected in the pricing given you ultimately have a lot of non-trivial fixed costs regardless of # app downloads. There is a dedicated server for the app (data collection, push notifications, data updates, admin publishing portal, etc), for example. But we will try to be nimble as we get feedback. I'll be the first to admit I am an absolute newb on app marketing, pricing, etc. I'd rather code than worry about such things. So my ear's are definitely open and taking all the comments in. Cheers! -Mike

    dandelien: site

    by t9mike

Hey dandelien. Harry did not decide to build an app. I did, and then Harry approved and we worked a deal to handle revenue share. I know the AICN team has some things brewing, but the APP should not be seen as resources taken away from the site. They had to do very little. I was a crazy guy who wanted to lean iOS programming, LOVES the picks & peeks column, and said to myself "this would make a great APP, what the heck I'll do this and worse case I've learned a thing or two."

  • AND THE THANKS WE GET IS CONDESCENDING BULLSHIT AND CONSTANT EXCUSES.

  • Dec. 1, 2012, 10:51 a.m. CST

    t9mike

    by John Brown

I congratulate you, sir...there was a day when I wanted to write apps for iOS, but found it too daunting a task. You are a better man than I. Please know I am not criticizing the app...only questioning the pricing. And me, personally, I'm happy to support AICN by buying it, since I know that's part of what's going on here. But my concern is the average iPhone/iPod touch user who will not even give it a second glance because it doesn't offer value for money. I want it to succeed, as I want AICN to succeed. I'm just afraid it may be priced out of success. Kudos to you on your work, and many best wishes on future endeavors!

  • Understatement of the year

  • For a professional movie/geek site, aicn really seems highly unprofessional. Its sad to think about it, but the current aicn is always the last place who gets news. If I want movie or geek news, ASAP, I have to look at other sites. Main problem isn't Harry alone, but the other contributors, who wrote much more stuff, much more frequent. Where is Beaks, Massa and the others? Moriarty, the finest reviewer of the site, is long gone. Capone and Quint are still here, but have stopped reviewing as much stuff as they used to. New guys like the Kidd and John Ary came on the site. I really like Kidd, even if I'm in the minority, but John Ary is a fucking joke. Ten years ago, he wouldn't have a fucking dream of writing for this site. Today, he is almost top contributor. Its sad, Harry. The only cool guys left that you can bank on are the @ssholes. Even the headgeek only writes a couple of reviews a year, these days. Its your site, man! Write something!!! You cannot safe the site by Iphone apps or little movie or youtube ideas. You have to raise its profile again, back to the standart of years ago. This site has to be the site that runs ahead, not limps behind. It really pains me to say it, since I really loved it here, but you have to realize what matters, Harry.

Over 1000 pre-loaded excuses, citing such topics as health, money issues, other committments (BNAT, your Halloween party etc), plus the ever popular top-secret-disasters-affecting-AICN) Packed with incorrect facts about movies, including an entire bogus filmography of Brian Cox. All this plus special generators for bragging about made up sexual encounters, inappropriate sexual comments about rape etc., and name dropping. Coming soon to iTunes! I've visited this site since 1998...and only started talkbacking on here in the last five or six years or so. I loved this place. To a large extent, I still do, but that's largely due to the talkbackers on here...the community that's grown up around it. The d.Vader's, Choppahs, AsImovlives, hell even CreepyThinMans have always made this place something cool to check in on and marvel at, chuckle along with, argue with. Sadly, that's one of the few reasons I visit any more. This site, it seems to me, has become little more than a bolt-hole for people who fondly remember what it was rather than what it is. If I come across as a troll, then it's only because I remember what this place once was and am infuriated because of what it appears to be now...

I wish there were others like you but sadly so many TalkBackers now are either neophytes who didn't see AICN in its glory days or are just Harry sycophants who will defend their hero whatever rubbish he puts on the site. If there were more of us maybe, just maybe, lazy Knowles would get his head of of his arse and start fixing the site so it returned to the brilliant website it used to be. But sadly while he believes people will accept sub-standard rubbish, he will continue to bask in his Z list celebrity status and prioritise self-egrandising projects over the site itself.

    by Flip63Hole

I guess it's safe to say you're not a musician or editor... Bummer I didn't tell my friend about "crApple" before he started working at Skywalker Ranch. Maybe he could have avoided using Macs and then he would have never got his job (or Emmy). Same with my video editor friends. Next time you're watching network TV, all that stuff on crApple could have been much better if produced with Online Troll Guy's generic computer. Bummer I invested in "crApple" when they where at $35/share. I really, really regret that to this day, I tell ya. LOL. Sucks, I tell ya! (I shouldn't brag. It was only a $20,000 investment). Bummer I have a crapple computer in my recording studio. I really hate using Logic Studio and my Mac. Apogee support really sucks, too. I miss that good old Windows/Android latency. Really, I'm just bummed I never met a true creative force and computer expert like yourself ages ago. (Typed on my home-built Windows gaming PC, from an Android user)

    by YourMomsBox3D

No offense to the guy who created it -- he seems genuine and talented. It's just a shame that he dedicated that talent and personal time on such a pointless endeavor for such a lazy ingrate. I've never seen an organization such as Aint it Cool News offer so little to its consumers and demand so much in return. Yeah dude, I get it, Harry didn't ask for this app, you did it on your own and he approved. Noted. But that's the point. Ol' meat-tits just sits on his hands and pisses and moans until a fucking READER so fed up with the incompetence with which this site is run, and so frustrated with how behind in the times it is, that he steps up to the plate and creates something that might keep this piece of floating sewage buoyant for another half-year. What's your dream for AICN and how are you willing to help achieve it? That says it ALL. Fucking fat layabout looking for handout after handout. That's the reason this site has been in a state of arrested development for the past 10-plus years. No one has literally taken Baby Huey by the hand and done his job for him. Fuck this app, and fuck the birthday boy. I'd sooner take my $2.99 fucking eat it on melba toast slathered in dogshit that contribute any of my hard-earned cash to some man-child that would rather buy an action figure than pay his bills or move out of his father's house. The stench of this is worse than actually having to be within 12 feet of the man himself.

I don't have an Iphone or a Kindle, or whatever. Not because I can't get one, but the whole sthick of it wears off pretty quick to me. It's like Sega CD or 32x. Why would I want to use my phone to get on the internet? None the less, read Harrys' DVD column. Walk to the Neighbors house, or get back to work from your lunch. Who the fuck would read this on your phone. Just don't get it. Oh and fuck Facebook and Twitter too. I would honestly appreciate an answer. This shit Boggles my mind.

I read Aicn on my phone all the time. I'm not a desk jockey so it's my only connection to the interwebs during the day. I've never had a problem with the main site on mobile. I downloaded the hitfix app, but hated it. Not that I go to the main site either, but thought I'd give the app a try. Sucked. I don't think I'd use Harry's app either. I mainly come here for the talkback.

I guess what I'm asking is, you don't have the internet at home, it is primarily on your phone? If you do have it at home, where exactly are you on the internet, reading AICN at during the day, on your phone? School? Work, not at a desk? Cuz, that's where I usually look at AICN, at my desk at work, like right now :)

We can all bitch and moan as much as we like...

    by SUPERJIM

..about the quality of the site. We'd be right of course, it's been terrible for years. But it would still be a sad day if it closed. That being said I still wouldn't buy this app. I only still come here out of habit. I've been coming here since I was a teenager looking for The Matrix sequel news over dial up internet. I rarely read an article any more and just read the talkbacks like a lot of people seem to. I know AICN doesn't want my advice, but there needs to be changes if they want to save the site. Start writing reviews for movies would be number 1 I guess. Start posting rumours and actual news. Regularly. If you can't get scoops or exclusives AT LEAST hire someone to repost the scoops and news that other sites get to keep the traffic here. I bet there's even a bunch of talkbackers that would do it for free until you're back on your feet.

    by SUPERJIM

..don't get me started on those. I imagine most people come here to read news not watch it. A lot of people can't watch and listen when they're at work, or school, or looking after sleeping kids, or sitting in a room while everyone else watches TV, or using mobile internet. The list goes on. Do a transcript at least man. I don't even CLICK those articles any more which means you aren't even getting the tiny fraction of a $ for my page view.

a few random thoughts regarding this

    by dancetothebeatofthelivingdead

I flew throgh the talkback so most of this stuff I'm sure has already been touched upon I'm sure but: If Harry profits one penny, one red fucking cent, off of this app, then heis even more of a selfish and greedy disgusting slob than I thoughgt he was. The fucking dude, Mike I think his name was, took the time to create this app in part BECAUSE of Harry's irresponsibility, disorganization, complete lack of concern for what we all want, and utter failure to update this antiquated site in any way, shape, or form in YEARS. He should get every dime that AIC is charging for this app. The traffic alone will be Harry's reward and he can sell adspace, something we know he's not above. Let the guy have the money for his own work. All the advances in technology we've had in the last seven or eight years, hell in the last seven or eight months and this site han't had even minor updates that have stuck let alone the major, major overhaul that it desperately needs as its' existence hangs on by a thread. Yes, the talkbacks are the main reason this site is still around. There are no scoops on this ite anymore, none at all. Not even a few sprinled in here and there. I mean, there are NONE. Harry doesn't even really mention his private phone converstaions with Guillermo, Sly, and Rober Rodrgiuez anymore. Probably because of the embarassment he went through on a few occasions when I remember he was bragging about talking to one of these three on the phone and then that very day or the next day or two, a major scoop or story hit the net involving the very person Harry was speaking to and Harry didn;t get the scoop. I remember that happening a few times and Harry took some major abuse, a little more than usual, actually. All news items on this site are pasted on from toher sites. All of them. At least the reporte...uhh....reviewe....uhh.....writer......uhh....oh yeah, pasters that paste for this site admit it. Kudos to the guys at Latino Review, Dark Horizons, CHUD, etc. etc. for going out and getting the news so that the pasters at AICN have something to post, I mean, paste. I will give credit where credit is due and through some manuevering, Quint seems to have gotten himself a lifetime pass to the sets of Peter Jackson movies. However, whenever PJ is making a movie, he posts daily diary blogs which pretty much give more informatio than embargoed QUint is allowed. Which brings us to Quint. No complaints here. And Massawyrm. Bring him back. Capone has his moments. And of course, the DVD column. Once the best part of AICN, now it's just shameful. Harry pretty much goes through the motions of just posting links to the most popular titles of the week now basically so he can get his finders fee from Amazon. There is no work at all put into that column anymore. Over half of the wook's releases are left out every week and the ones that are posted have about a 50/50 chance of the sentence beneath the cover photo saying that Harry hasn;t gotten around to watching it yet. Usually because his free copy didn;t get there fast enough for him. Harry, this was once an awesome site. At its' peak, it was by far the best of its' king on the net. I hope that you are proud of that but if your heart isn't in it anymore, then hand the reins to someone else. Seriously, Fantastic Fest, you have reviewed two movies and thrown up a few DVD columns that it would be generous to call half-ass. Despite all of our complaints, all of our bitching, we all still come here. Yes, most of us still come out a habit and mostly for the Talkbacks. You do have that Talkback traffic, though. No other site even comes close to comparing with the familarity and dysfunctional as fuck family atmosphere that the AICN TB community has. None even come close. So, for some reason, you've still got us all here, Harry. A couple more slip away every week. We all remember how great this site was and we all wish it still were. So, being that for now you still have us all here, do something drastic to keep us. You know what? Fuck drastic, just spend more time on the DVD column next week. That's wehere mos of your vitriol comes from every week, so start by making it really good next week. Just make that baby step your jumping off point. Then take it from there. Just give a shit, again, Harold. We're not asking you to learn how to make a comprehensible sentence; we know better than that. We're not asking you to learn how to write; we all know that's not going to happen. You can be Harry, just be a Harry that looks and acts like he gives a fuck about this site. Stop being Harry that comes on here every week and tells us how he's saving the day behind the scenes, or that you're in danger of losing the site. If you fix it, they will come.

    Bring back Vern

    by bloody_shit_on_my_dick

AICN needs Vern. Also, whatever happened to the choppah and danny glovers dickblood? They were more entertaining than the current writers of this site. But like others have said, I generally skim the articles and read the talkbacks. That is the backbone of this site.

AND THEN FINDING OUT IT'S ON THIS WEBSITE FOR FREE. They'll be real happy about that.

    nostalgia

    by Dollar Bird

There was a time I would spend over an hour on this site every day, just checking the news and reading the talkbacks. Now, I see the news on Google, then come here to read the talkbacks. I just don't rely on AICN to bring me "scoops" anymore. I miss that, though. Back in the day when Sir Etch A Sketch would dribble out the latest news in animation (I think that was his name) or Moriarty would provide script reviews. Or any number of spies would swoop in, give their early review, then let the TBers squabble over the crumbs. I miss that, even if those old reviews were total plants. How I long for the days where a "spy" would claim kids belly-bumped when it was revealed they would see "Transformers." Or longer ago, to Grando Calrissian and the sexiest tomboy beanpole on the planet. And I miss a lot of the old names that came by here, too. I know some of them have gone on to do their own thing, like Vern or Danny Glover's Dickblood, but for each of those who went to greener pastures, there were guys who just faded away, like Jett L who "wrote scripts" or many others whose names I have forgotten, but who's character, trolling, or jokes I have not. I guess I'm old.

    BWAHAHAHAHA!!!! Seriously?

    by Alex

I've been visiting this site for years. And years. And this is the first time I've signed up to talkback. And last. (see the sentence frags Harry?) I'm disgusted. The vanity 'web-show' was awful. As was Harry inserting himself into all of the John carter stuff a while back. Pathetic. After that I started spending my time at collider and bleedingcool. I only come here now for ambush bug's horror columns and to read the talkbacks on Harry's DVD column. Why did I post today? I posted today because I can't believe anyone would pay ANYTHING for this app. Mark, buddy, you wasted your time. Harry, you wasted Mark's time. And the output of the DVD column is pathetic. Pathetic. The reviews have sucked for years but at least they were there. It's no surprise that the site has financial troubles. It's symptomatic of the problems here, which IMO rest squarely on Harry's gooey lazy shoulders. I'm happy that the site has financial troubles.

  • Dec. 2, 2012, 8:15 a.m. CST

    by Alex

Because maybe it will force you to re-examine the effort (or lack thereof) that goes into the site. Oh and billy the kid is a choad; Another symptom of the fall of this once tolerable site. I hope the site's financial troubles eat into Harry's ridiculous budget for super expensive unobtanium geek memorabilia. I'm out.

How has nobody 'borrowed' the TB design?

    by SK229

It's clearly the thing that keeps everyone coming to this site. I can't stand the commenting system on any other site. It's the odd mixture of the colors, the titles, that they all load on one page, etc., and the fact that pretty much ANYTHING goes. People that comment on Slash/io9, or other sites are fucking boring, for the most part, and anyone with a strong opinion or some off-the-wall shit to say, there's just this weird decorum and shocked politeness that I CAN'T FUCKING STAND. Just let it all hang out, that's the fun of it. So I can't, for the life of me, figure out why no other movie site that actually PROVIDES good writing, up-to-date news, and actual scoops has not come up with something as similar as possible to the TB's. If I were doing aintitbalenews, I'd literally put every dime into copying the TB style. We all just need a subject, some semblance of an article, and then we're off... and it's the best damn thing about this site and the ONLY reason to come here. I do think there was also a bit of genius in coming up with 'characters' like Capone, Moriarty, Massa, Quint, etc., so I'd probably do something like that as well. Give us some kind of lens to view each writer through in their handle and a cool drawing and then let that writer find room to become that character in their writing. Something else has to come up in the vacuum left by this site... honestly, it's ABSOLUTELY AMAZING that no website has taken these elements and filled it. Every other site is STILL just a mish-mash of SOME things that were great about this site but not EVERYTHING that was once great. And Harry... DUDE... time is running out. It really is. I keep saying this'll be the last time, but it's the fucking TB's. They're addicting. BUT... it has to only be a matter of time before there's some place else to do this as well. I don't know how much money you've got in savings from aicn, but I hope it's enough to live off of for the next 20-30 years, because once the ship has sailed, that is fucking it. You've got an increasingly limited window of time to turn the ship around in a BIG way. I'd say you need to let someone else take a crack at running things like an actual company that has a responsibility to its audience and its employees to stay on top of things and keep up with providing fresh and timely content... keep your core strengths, (TB, some aspects of the layout, characters) and then build new elements on top of that that bring the site up-to-date. I said it before... I don't think it's gonna happen, but I'd love to be proven wrong. Everyone loves a comeback.

Btw, 5 years ago, AICN ad buy-ins started...

    by SK229

at something like $10k. And I think it went significantly higher than that. The CPM was something like $3-$10 depending upon your budget proposal. So extrapolate from that how long this site has been in the top 2,000 U.S. sites, how many ads they run, and how long you spend on here and I think you can see that it makes quite a bit and probably also costs quite a bit to run (although probably nowhere NEAR as much to run as sites who have less traffic but actual offices, staff, and are run like an actual business.) I still can't believe there are TB's coming here for a while who don't realize just how much it costs to advertise here... or at least used to cost. Some of you seem to talk like this ISN'T a business and MAYBE he makes some money off of it.

  • I'd love to write for it, comment on the picture quality and the special features, do a quick review of the flick...actually review stuff instead off-tangent, this flick raped/or didn't rape my childhood, stuff.

    Sk229, totally agree

    by Bobo_Vision

I've tried other talkbacks and they're so boring. Just got banned from firstshowing.net, and I didn't really do all that much. For the most part, it was simply for voicing my opinion about how bad some of the upcoming films sounded, or how horrible some of the titles were, and then occasionally some more outlandish stuff, and it results in this uptight indignation by the resident dullards. Most of them are sycophants who suck up to the site owners, and are excited by every single upcoming project crapped out of Hollywood's anus.

Well said. I'm sick and tired of Harry bleating about financial issues etc., when he is the dick head who has caused them through mis-management. The financial model of this site clearly suggests AICN could be more than financially viable if it wasn't run by a redneck yokel who places his own ego above all else.

  • Dec. 2, 2012, 3:14 p.m. CST

    Harry, a serious question

    by Mike J

How come just about everybody here can see how easily this site could be fixed both financially and quality-wise, and yet you don't. Is it because you are (as I believe) far too busy indulging your own ego, because you've believed all the press about you being a movie expert? Or is it just because you are totally clueless? Seriously, can't you please just STOP selectively reading the (rapidly declining) sycophantic minority and just pay attention to the ground-swell of opinion that indicates how relatively easily this site could be fixed and turned into a VERY remunerative enterpise. Harry, you're lazy and you are stupid. But you are enthusiastic and passionate. Delegate the running of this site to someone who doesn't have the mentality of an 11 year old and you can just be free to be the child you want to be. The site will be better for it, it will be financially secure and you can still have your ego massaged by remaining as a figurehead of AICN. Or you can just remain as you are, in love with yourself and too blind and ignorant to see that everything is collapsing around your chubby ankles because you can't be bothered. Fix it or fuck off. Grow up or get lost. Stop being a whiny little twat who blames everything and everyone for your own faults. Be a fucking adult for once in your life.

    Re: Bobo and Banned

    by SK229

Bobo - That exactly describes the kind of people who comment elsewhere... they're like the passive aggressive people you work with or for, except they're on the internet and still can't manage to let their freak flag fly. Or express unbridled, almost inexplicable hatred for something... or unbridled enthusiasm. They're like studio plants, except they're actual people. How fucking boring they must be in real life... Banned_Dirty_Ape - I've been saying that shit in a lot of TB's for quite a while and I know you have too. What do you think the over/under is on something being done. It's funny (or, rather sad), wouldn't you KILL to have an asset like this and some money at your disposal? That's exactly what I was getting at, Harry should be a FIGUREHEAD, like you mentioned, and someone competent should run the site like a real business that delivers on promises and makes sure the trains run on time. HERE'S THE MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION(s): What would it cost to just have someone code something like the TB's and tie it into a site like this? How many people would jump ship? How much of this site's value is in our need to bitch about it at this point? How much is vested in knowing who the writers are after so many years of coming here? What IS it anymore? Has the audience changed over to TOO many sycophants who love everything Hollywood shits out no matter what and so something similar to TB's could never be as big as it once was and the rest of us are just old fucking codgers from a time when you actually had an opinion and cared about quality?

  • Ask not what Harry can do for you ... ask what You can do for Harry!

I have no idea about the costs involved in setting up a website that would mirror a TB facility like we have here. What I do know however is that the financial contribution receieved from advertisers is MASSIVE. I have a friend in the UK who works for the marketing arm of Paramount UK and they believe that banner advertsing on a site like this is worth thousands of dollars. AND heres the real kicker - they do all the work! The produce the code and all AICN has to do is link to that. So in man hours there is little costs to a site like AICN and a huge amount of remunerative return. My question is, given the probable revenue this site generates, how the hell has Harry The Idiot managed to turn the position into a financial crisis? Ok, hosting fees must be pretty huge I accept that - but what other costs are there? Set visits are paid for by the movie companies, DVD and blurays are provided free for reviewers and AICN is now so well established that it really shouldnt have to pay for search-engine optimization. Apparently Knowles PAYS contributors to work here (for god's sake, why???? With the exception of Quint all other current contributors write like 13 year olds - yes Nerdling, I'm including you in that). Sorry, but Harry Knowles couldn't pour piss out of a shoe if the instructions were on the heal. On current evidence I'm astonished that AICN hasn't filed for insolvency already.

    Who the fuck knows?

    by SK229

I think that five or six years ago, this site could have easily been pulling in over 50k per month, possibly even a lot more. I really don't know how this site can be in a financial crisis. Even with operating costs. I'd love to see a balance sheet. Harry isn't driven around in a Bentley and I'm not even sure he's a homeowner. Also, I doubt the writers here get paid THAT much. I'm betting they get a flat rate per article... MAYBE Quint or Beaks are on salary. Here's another thing - if that's the case, and he realizes it (which it seems he does), how do you NOT put the word out for people that would know how to come in and clean things up? There have to be a TON of people who know how to run a business and a website that could come in and put this site in the black. ALL Harry has to do is contribute once in a while, maybe do his videos, keep the site profile up, and sit on his ass the rest of the time. I'm seriously considering putting money into a site where the most important aspect will be making comments similar to these TB's. Even just as an experiment... I don't even think you have to limit it to movies, it could be about video games, computers, clothes, raising children, taxes, where you live... it's something about this design that is clearly addicting. Coming back and checking to see if anyone responded to you (I did quite well in this TB, apparently, lol)... I was looking at comments in Hitfix, which gets quite a few, and I HATE the nested replies. Anyone else feel that way? Or am I missing something about this? How could you take TB and improve upon it? I can't believe Harry has never really solicited opinions here... although they are obviously given over quite voluntarily and for free!

    sk229, again, I agree 100%

    by Bobo_Vision

The talkbacks here, particularly before they attempted to change them...the formats are brilliant in their simplicity. I still find the fucked up improvements superior to other talkbacks. Take Disqus for example. I hate the nested replies, and I hate the voting system where instead of ordering the comments based on chronology...they are ordered based on the number of thumbs up or thumbs down a comment gets. Fucking hate that. It becomes a popularity contest, and the douches that run the site are thumbing up the sycophants with their numerous moderator accounts, and anyone else sinks to the bottom of the forum. Then you have the message board format where people have avatars and can insert photos/videos, etc., it's too complicated, and again, what you get is a bunch of people posting memes and lame photos and it gets annoying as fuck. Here, the only thing that exists in talkbacks are words. Beautiful words. I love it. The talkbacks are the one magnificent thing about this website.

But Android is by far superior now and it's sad that Apple innovation died with Steve Jobs. That said, I love Harry and all, but even if there were an Android app for this, why would I purchase it? I love the dvd reviews but it can be months between them and the recent ones have only been about 3 titles. I don't mind investing in this site, but they have to be able to produce as well. I don't think of Harry as a modern day George Lucas (once brilliant but now paling in what he once was), but if he can't keep up, why not hire someone who can. Hell, sell the site to Disney for a zillion bucks so that Mickey can write this stuff. But either way, it's time to find more time for the site or more people to dedicate to it.

Except every character is Piggy. Fat, cheeseball eatin', pimply keyboard warrior Piggy's who think everyone who ever had a website owes them their first born child or some shit. Get a grip people, if you hate it so much here wtf are you doing here? Go clean the sand out of your vaginas and get a hold of yourselves. Jesus, makes you worry for the world...

Topanga>Winnie Cooper? I heartily disagree. Also, regarding the talkbacks—they're perfect. No nesting, no likes/dislikes. You can watch conversations bloom and die. And the day we get an edit button on here is the day my affection for this site truly dies. I love the fact that no one can go back and renege on anything they said. Edit buttons just make more clutter, and then confusion when people change their minds and then everyone's replying to something that's no longer there. Make your point, proof it, post it. Every time someone writes "Aargh! Edit button, Harry! This is the 21st century!!!1!" I smile a little at their foolishness.

Totally agree about the edit button, and about Topanga. With regards to people requesting an edit button, these people reveal their deep insecurities every time with their "Blaargh, I'm an idiot! Edit button raaaargh." They are deeply insecure about how intelligent (or unintelligent) they appear to others. As long as the message you were trying to communicate gets through....then who cares. Even if it doesn't get through, just post a correction in a follow up post. But these people are really sensitive about appearing stupid. Either they are OCD, or harbor deep wounds from their grade school experience. As for Topanga, I didn't know who that was until I googled her, and she's a hideous beast. She's like a monstrous drunk aunt with make-up smeared all over her face crossed with a wildabeast and trapped in a twenty-somethings body.

When they rant about the edit button....

    by Bobo_Vision

...they often say things like, "Goddammit, Harry, when are you going to update this antiquated site and get an edit button!!!" What they are really saying is, "I'm not an idiot! It's Harry's fault! Harry is to blame for making me look like a fool!" It's a defense mechanism. They might also blame their parents for not providing them with proper school supplies or reading material as the reason for their inability to perform as well as they would have liked in school, or college. I say, from now on, whenever someone makes errors and requests an edit button, we should all post comments in droves and ridicule them for their mistake. Shame them. It's the only way they'll learn.

    by Sultan_of_San_Diego

There's plenty to be critical of on this site, but the fact that people keep coming back despite all the bitching is a testament to the site's potential. This is a great step forward and its great that it modernizes the best column this site has going for it. You got my $$$.

    by Chris Kirby

He'll have it posted very timely and may only manage to make 18 or so grammatical errors. It's kinda sweet if you think about it. He has people paying for the app expecting him to provide this content regularly. Maybe just maybe he'll even try to catch up on the old columns. This will last about 3 weeks. Maybe if we are lucky, through the holiday season.....

I'll stick to the www.aintitcool.com "app". No iPhone, no Android, no other B.S. electronic distraction (i.e. toy). I F'ing HATE it when people are dicking around with those damn things while I'm driving, shopping, whatever. Some inconsiderate a$$hole in front of me just the other day was farting around at a light that had just changed green. I'm back behind him, unable to move into the other lane due to a line of other cars, wondering what this prick's problem is...next thing I know he's putting something up to his ear...the bastard was dialing his F'ing PHONE!! WHILE AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT that turned GREEN. Another farts with one of those things while sitting in a theater DURING the MOVIE. Listen...if you can't turn that damn thing off for 2 stinkin' hours, long enough to watch the film, then you have a PROBLEM. You want to dial someone, text someone (even worse), answer a call, or whatever F'ing CRAP you do with that blasted toy of yours, do the rest of us a favor... PULL THE FUCK OVER and get your ass out of the way (or get the fuck out of the theater). Some of us have better things to do.

I'm with you both. This site is NOTHING but a pale, shallow imitation of what it used to be. I'm discovering more and more each week that the stories "breaking" here can be found at an ever increasing number of other sites BEFORE they show up here. Sad. You know, it seems to coincide with Harry trying to branch out and do more stuff outside the site and with the "hiring" of a couple of snotty, grouchy, smart ass, condescending pricks as "writers" that seem to do damn near everything these days ("Nordling" and "The Kidd"). Time to move on...

I don't know what it is about iphone users that makes them get all emotional about their cult based loyalties. But when you sit down an iPhone 5 next to a Samsung Galaxy S3, the specs show that the S3 is the superior phone. I get that Apple is better at marketing their products and it triggers those emotions that you feel for them, but emotions don't talk to logic. The GS3 really is the better phone. And no daddy doodling happened in my childhood. Perhaps it did in yours and that's why you're so emotional about your phone...

you actually managed to get 2 on-time DVD columns for your money. that's only $1 a week!

  • That's it, I'm leaving. Seriously, even if you glance over that sentence an alarm should go off in your head that something is wrong. Question: Do you all think Harry.... A. Realizes his mistakes but keeps them in because that's the way he wants to write? B. Realizes his mistakes but just doesn't care? C. Simply doesn't notice the mistakes? D.(Worst one) Has no idea that that sentence is a grammatical nightmare?

Don't believe a word Harry says

    by brenbloom

I posted this in another thread, but maybe Harry will read this. I never come on these boards to comment, but you've got me pissed off, Harry. I held off on purchasing the picks and peeks app to see if you would start updating this column in a timely manner. I'm now glad I refrained as you could not be counted on to keep this column running on schedule for more than 2 weeks straight. What a letdown to your readers, but even more so, what a slap in the face to the gentleman who spent his time and effort creating an app for which you refuse to provide new content. Pitiful.
