They were right to edit the show. It's too much for Japanese or American audiences. And not as much breezy fun

And by too much, I don't mean that kids can't handle adult themes. There's just too much in it overall

I was mildly interested in MMPR only because of Dynaman on Night Flight. I recall the Yellow Ranger being dubbed with a southern accent. Anyone?

and he banged the Pink Ranger..... Both of them.

But I can get the Power Rangers.
-
Got me through some akward years. Her and the oldest sister on Step by Step.
-
That cowboy yellow ranger from Dynaman was the funniest thing to me as a kid.
-
"Akibaranger" a mini-series that aired earlier this year (2012) that kinda takes the piss out of the Super Sentai series in a more adult-oriented, yet comedic manner. Due to it being of an adult nature, it will NEVER see an American version, which is a shame.
-
…primer if you've never bothered to peep the previous 34 Japanese series. Covers the past teams and brings back older actors from the series.

Nooooo one, can ever take them down. The power lies on their sideeeeeeeeeee!

Thank God I was too old for this shit when the show premiered. Than again, I grew up on shit like Tranzor Z, so what do I know?

By the way that is NOT a good thing. That show sucked balls in everyway, from the acting, the script, the effects (which were more special ed than special). Just like Barney and the Teletubbies my wife and I didn't allow our sons to watch it. Instead we introduced them to Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings (books and movies), Star Trek, Marvel , D.C. And great interactive storytelling like the Elder Scrolls games, and old school Bruce Lee and Godzilla (man in suit !!!) and the great shows of our youth , Thundercats, and VOLTRON!
-
Yes!! The cowboy!! Great post btw.

So say we all.

There was at least a little attempt to take the show seriously, not like the later seasons where the show's prettymuch laughing at itself. And not to mention the great movie, which you missed out on. I watched that movie repeatedly as a kid, I enjoyed it so much. I don't even know why anymore. It's really not that good, but damn it was like the power rangers had finally become real or something... I have to contend with your point about it introducing us to sci-fi. It didn't... probably put people off it. What I was drawn to about the show was the martial arts, which I taught myself to do quite a bit while watching the show. I'm sure a lot of martial artists today were heavily influenced by the show... probably because the actors on the original were all either martial artists or acrobats, adding authenticity to their fights and stunts. Which is another reason why the original show was so fuck balls awesome. It wasn't fake bullshit. They could really do all that shit. Yeah baby...

There is nothing more useless on this site than anything that starts with "John Ary on..."

TV aimed at 6 year-olds would've been so much better if more of the characters that they loved DIED. Sure.

The real hot one was the asian chick. She's dead now, if I recall she was in a kind of horrific car accident.

It's not like Saban edited these shows down because they assumed the kids wouldn't appreciate good story-telling, it was just a way to sell merch. Make the show have as much action with the minimal amount of whatever insipid morality tale they thought was needed to squeak past critics and there ya go. And even then the action time was eaten up by the morphing, summoning and transformation sequences. It went something like, "It's morhin' time!" *Cue five minutes of bullshit where each character is highlighted, giant robot summoned and then combined before five seconds of MAN IN SUIT swinging sword and destroying monster* That being said, it was a delightful waste of time. Amy Jo Johnson was HOT! Kind of surprising to see her run around in that thong leotard on a kiddy show. And the Asian chick...dude, you know she was only hired because she was flat chested and her Japanese counterpart was actually a dude. They couldn't have some big tittied chick running around one second and then some barrel chested dude in a mask the next. Still, I'da done her. Hell, if she's not too decomposed I still might.

GAY PORN!!!!!!!!! No joke, look it up!
-
They're the real heroes, trying to shut those geeks down as much as they could. Enduring endless humiliation for their principles.
-
Frankenstein was the name of the mad doctor who created the monster, the monster had no name. As for the Japanese originals, the girls tended to be older and more ... distracting, than the ones on the American counterparts. Another part of the originals' appeal.
-
... and I fucking HATED them! Except for wanting to bone the pink ranger that's pretty much all I took away from it. I just felt someone was making fun of me.

That show blew my mind when it came out. I must have been in third grade. Then VR Troopers came out, only in that show every battle would recycle the same footage over and over again.

This was in 1996. He was sitting with a couple hot girls, looking like a boss.

Thuy Trang was gorgeous too...RIP...I didnt even learn about her passing until I had already grown up
by wcolbert
Sort of along the lines of finding out later that Judith Barsi (voice of Ducky on land before time, the little girl in All dogs go to heaven) was murdered- shot in the head by her own father who then burned her and her mother and killed himself - she was just a little girl. Really changes how you look back on those things later. :(
-
I was a chile of the 80's he was a dumb ass of the 90's. He dared to try to tell me once that the Megazord (or whatever the fuck it was called) could kick the shit out of Voltron and make it their bitch. I gave him beat down, and to this day tell him I'm gonna beat him like a power ranger when we are fighting.

Re: And Between Mighty Morphin Power Rangers And Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger, We Had ...
by ArmageddonProductions
... "Dynaman", whose Americanized version was simply the Japanese version redubbed WHAT'S UP, TIGER LILLY? style and played endlessly on "Night Flight" back in the Eighties': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vi7DpNGZKao I say this was the precursor to "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" because they actually made an attempt to play this on Saturday morning network television, where it promptly sailed right over most kids' heads. Too bad they never tried for this with "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" or any Japanese cartoon ...
-
First, I agree about Amy Jo Johnson. Damn cute and she's pretty much the only one who went on to other stuff you'd see her in on occasion. She finally did a nude/sex scene and you can see her luscious boobs for a brief moment though it's shot from accross the room. As to the repetative comment, it got silly after a time. Have a fight, then have another, then the monster grows and the Rangers form the Magazord or whatever. Every episode. And if you put some thought to it, it was a take off of Gachaman (Battle of the Planets for some). They both had wristband things that trasformed them to their costumes. Add to that the fact that BOTP was a watered down version of the original Gachaman (people died on Gachaman, whereas on BOTP they always pointed out that planes and ships destroyed were unmanned). And oh yes, Alpha the robot was kind of like BOTP 7 Zark 7. I had hoped that the Power Rangers movie would have been a reboot of sorts showing how Zordon came to be and how he selected the kids and make it more adult, and I still think something like that could work. Of course, I am hoping for either a new version of Gachaman or even a live-action version (which has been rumored to be in development since the 90's). Oh yeah, Captain Power was similar too, and did it first (well, before the american Power Rangers anyway).
-
The Black Ranger was black.
-
So awful. You must find a new format for me to get beyond 30 seconds of these things. Try actually talking, rather than flatly reading flat copy.
-
Power Rangers was after my time. This wasn`t it for me but there was plenty of other dreck to choose from.

Was anyone mildly offended by the original "color" coordination?
by tangcameo
I had outgrown crap like this by the time it started airing but when it came on, and I couldn't find the remote, I was like "Seriously? The black power ranger is african-american. The yellow power ranger is asian-american. The pink power ranger is female (okay that one wasn't really offensive, just obvious)." By the time I found the remote, I was wondering if the red power ranger would end up being Cherokee. And is it just me or is the Pink Power ranger in that photo wearing a maternity shirt?
-
Nov. 28, 2012, 7:33 a.m. CST
tangcameo - what, you're not offended that the white ranger was white?
by wcolbert
Just saying. But yeah, I noticed it too even as a kid... it was blatantly obvious what they were doing, and no way it was coinidental. Kind of sad when you think about it. Then again...it's not as if the black ranger was ACTUALLY black - he's brown. Asians aren't actually yellow - this isn't the simpsons - and nobody is actually white unless they're albino... these are all just vast over-generalizations used by humans to approximate people into groups - people feel more comfortable when they can index and categorize things, regardless of if it is accurate or even makes sense. That said...yeah it irked me somewhat. And WASN'T the red ranger's actor part native?
-
Much to my everlasting shame, I watched "Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad", as well as "Tattooed Teenaged Alien Fighters from Beverly Hills". Yes, I was desperate for entertainment in those days, but in my defense, the brunette on TTAF was supernaturally hot.

...I was in college when it came out. We saw some commercials and thought "Oh, cool! A kaiju show!" Then we watched the first episode. And it was insipid. "Lowest common denominator" is right.

lotsa people saying they were too old for this when it came out
by Stephen
I was too, but just barely I guess. Everybody else in my grade loved it but I thought it was retarded. And I'm a virgo/young for my grade so "old for it" is the wrong term. ...too smart for it? Either way, I wish I wouldve been more accepting/fascinated by it like the other kids. I wouldve enjoyed my childhood more.
-
Power Rangers were the 90's answer to my 70's Ultraman series. I used to love Ultraman.. and just like Ultraman, every single episode of the Power Ranges is the exact same, just insert a new foe each episode, and add a new weapon every now and then so you can pump out the figures. I can't stand he Power Rangers but the 3 1/2 year old loves them and has every freaking figure you can imagine. Now he's in Karate, and I can't get the go go power rangers song out of my head. Like you said...love em or hate 'em.

I was a freshman in high school when this came out. So I wasn't into this at all. The only reason me and my buddy watched it was because of the episode where Amy Jo Johnson was doing gymnastics on a balance beam or something. My boy pointed out, "She's cute. And she has a nice ass for a white girl." Of course there was no DVR back then for us to rewind, but it was enough for us to tune in every now and then... Until we found girlfriends.
-
I think I have some kind of mental issue with this show. I can not read it without substituting morphine for morphin. And I don't even use, man. Show didn't do much for me, other than make me miss Ultraman. My kids find it too silly to watch. My 80 year old father saw it on tv and told me he had no idea what the hell he was looking at. Cracked me up.
-

I always knew as a kid that this show was cut and paste ,thats why i never liked it and to this day talk shit about it....Cuz its a show for tards who couldnt figure that stuff out for themselves.
by The_All_Dead
really? no one else knew? like,INSTANTLY?
-
I love this shit!
-
Too autistic for it, probably. Not that it matters, since the show was shit. Still though, your distaste of it probably wasn't due as much to you being smart as it was probably due to the fact that it wasn't the one thing you upon which you were fixated at the time. Also, to those of you fapping to the Yellow ranger's corpse, please be aware that you're fapping to a pile of ash since Google tells me that she was burnt to a crisp and was stored in an urn, and Google is never wrong unless it is. Which in this case it isn't. Probably.
-
And I loved it! MAN IN SUIT!!! MAN IN SUIT!!! Love the megazord battles. 2013 is the 20th anniversary! Go Power Rangers Megaforce!
-
Please don't show them anything challenging, they might have heart attacks.
-
I remembered they presented tommy as the green ranger it was off the chain! best arc ever. I know it was cheesy and corny but it was kind of entertaining for me as a teen. lol. Also jason vs goldarr wow scary kind of shit right there... fighting an alien without your powers and unarmed in a tight confined space? not such a good idea.
