No Pleasant Tomorrow For
Chevy Chase On COMMUNITY!!
Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Chevy Chase has left the cast of “Community.”
But the thing is, we may not much notice his departure.
Most of season four has already been shot (including, apparently, the season finale) and there’s no guarantee “Community” will return for a fifth season if it does as poorly at 8 p.m. Thursdays (starting Feb. 7) as already-cancelled “30 Rock” is doing now.
And because NBC and Sony replaced series creator Dan Harmon as showrunner subsequent to season three, fans may just lose interest in the show anyway.
Chase has long been unhappy on the show. “It was a big mistake! I just sort of hung around because I have three daughters and a wife, and I figured out I might as well make some bread, every week, so I can take care of them in the way they want,” he told the Huffington Post. “The hours are hideous, and it’s still a sitcom on television, which is probably the lowest form of television.”

That belligerent cunt.
-
and doesn't realise how past it he is. Anyone remember the interview he did with AICN, where he let slip a real Pierce-ism, and when it was met with laughter, he looked confused? He never understood why he was funny, because he never got the joke.
-
Perfect description. Get Dan Aykroyd in to replace him.
-
Chevy Chase was the least funny person on the show.

I agree, I enjoy the pierce character but he's the 1 member of the main cast they could lose without wrecking the show
by Rebel Scumb
Everyone else is pretty integral. Wish they had kept Harmon and just let Chevy leave last season.
-
the last season it felt like Pierce was there just because he was supposed to be there. Like he was shoe horned into the story because they didn't know what else to do with him.
-
is that we still have Annie's Boobs.
-

I can't say his departure would ruin the show, Pierce was more of just a character used as filler
by Redhead_Redemption
Plus I would imagine his death on the show would be funny. With abed making lots of movie death references
-
hopefully they've written the finale with this in mind. Without Harmon and the other producers/writers/Starburns, it's a poor imitation anyway.
-
Fun characters, but not essential.

I Can't Say I Won't Miss Pierce, He Was Incredibly Important to Advanced Dungeons & Dragons
by Crow3711
As well as being a crucial part to many other of those most hilarious moments of Community. Like him or not, Pierce was part of the group, and this sucks. Maybe he is the "most expendable", but the whole point of Community is that they are a group, a family. Anyways, I'm digressing. At the end of the day, I'm sad because Advanced D&D is my favorite 30 minute sitcom episode of all-time, and Pierce was absolutely critical to its success, and I'm sad he hated the show so much. On another note, it's not that big of a deal because the show was never coming back for season 5 anyway. Not to mention this S4, whether it turns out good or not, is still not really "Community" as I consider it. We'll see, but I pretty much already just think of the show as having three seasons. Finally, the "already-cancelled" 30 Rock. You don't get cancelled after 7 seasons. Kind of an unnecessary way to frame it.
-
No, the least funny is Britta.

They ditch Harmon to keep Chevy. Yet Chevy never understood or got the show.
by Charlie
I remember when all the stuff went down and the comments Chevy had made and was making. He clearly didn't understand the show, or get it. What the show was, what it was trying to be or the humour of the show. He simply didn't get it. It's a shame as I think his character was probably the weakest of the main and added the least. He has done so much for comedy, but Community was something he didn't understand and ultimately because of him it will have gotten ruined and died. Which is a shame. NBC, if you're out there, give it a non Chevy Season. Get Dan Harmon back! Do a fifth season! Even the cynical part of me says, you can even use getting Dan back as promotion to boost a fifth season. Don't take away my Community!

i think chevy is a great part of the show, i frequently find his stuff amusing
by rakesh patel
but @vegas_karl idea to Get Dan Aykroyd in to replace him is genius... if only they could reach out to bill murray that would be a right kick in the nuts.
-
Advanced Dungeons and Dragons is amazing. The way he says "FAAAAAT." when spells a shapeshifting spell or whatever... it's hillarious. It's my ringtone.

I miss John Oliver on the show. He was great
by IWasInJuniorHighDickhead
-
He was the worst. So unfunny and predictable. I hope they move that other old guy with the weird wang into his spot. He was a supporting character but waaaaaay funnier. I haven't laughed at Chevy Chase since 1980 and I was 6 back then
-
I'll be very surprised if the show ever sees another season.
-
Gee whiz. He will not be missed.
-
...have to be the same people that find How I Met Your Mother or The Geek Show that runs after it as "funny". Chase was right this show sucked.
-
Nov. 22, 2012, 11:27 a.m. CST
To clarify: Pierce will be missed. Chevy will not be.
by Royston Lodge
Is that clear enough?

Aykroyd yells too much. He would be too overpowering on a show like Community.
by Royston Lodge
Director: Dan, for this take, can you try to be a bit funnier? Aykroyd: DO IT LOUDER? YOU GOT IT! Director: No, Dan, that's not what I said...
-
unfunny fucker

I think that clip would have worked better if they referenced Chevys mid-90's talk show.
by Squashua
You all remember that thing, right? I enjoyed it.
-
Yes, it seems like he's a dick and caused problems on set but the man knows comedy. In season 1 the clip of him trying to get out of a prison of keyboards is hilarious, and when he tries to eat a slice of pizza. Plus in the later seasons they gave him a bit of pathos and he played it well. Shame he thinks the show is so bad when its the only decent thing he's done for like 20 years. But yeah, as crow said above I don't consider this new season to be 'real' Community anyway. At best it'll be a decent spin-off
-
They ditched Harmon because he was an asshole and he was terrible at his job. His job is to make a TV show that attracts an audience and brings in revenue. At that he was very shitty. Yeah, the show in innovative but it was a failure in every other metric of success under him. When you're success you can be an asshole of the highest order like him. But when you're not then your days are numbered. He's lucky he and his show lasted 3 seasons.
-
Remember when Chevy delivered that incredibly vulgar, unfunny toast at Howard's wedding? Then everyone around Howard tried to explain to him that it was a huge "fuck-you" to Howard, yet Howard maintained that it was all in good fun and that he wasn't offended at all. One of the handful of times I've been completely disappointed with Howard. I think he was just too stubborn or humiliated to admit that he acted like a complete pussy instead of beating the shit out of Chevy. Oh, well ... Just goes to show you Chevy is a complete asshole. No way did he do it to be funny. It was revenge for years of abuse at the hands of Howard.

@thegoldbergv You're right it was the funniest thing he did in the last 20 years.
by rakesh patel
he was really funny in community. whilst everything else revolves around pop culture Chevy lines revolved around pop culture 10-20 years ago. which for someone like me immersed in pop culture for all of my life was just hilarious. I could appreciate the rest of the cast and Chevy, whilst i think younger viewers probably missed a hell of a lot of the subtitles references. Look he probably is an awkward ass, there's just too much shit out there about him for multiple sources which confirm he's an ass.. and hey that's ok what the letterman interview on youtube with bill murray about the fight they had and murray in his easy going way says it how it was, chevy left the snl team, he came back and thought his top spot would be left vacant for him to return, everyone felt like shit and it all blew up. My guess its probably the same with the community group, they look like a tight knit group, and Chevy thinks he beyond this ensemble. maybe he is, maybe the group wont reach his success. but in that situation you surely start helping and giving advice and pass on the torch and say we are are a team, we're all equal. I suspect they are without him and to a certain extent its a relief to them. He's probably been sucking all their energy, they've been tip toeing around him and not reaching the potential they could have. it's a pity this didn't go down earlier, because then they would have known they didn't actually need him. He may have bolted now, because he can see the writing on the wall and is the rat leaving the sinking ship, determined to leave on his own terms. which is bollocks really. whats really annoying is they're normal quite chatty on twitter.. but with this shit, they've all gone on locked down mode.

Shirley is underappreciated as a character. She may not make as many big jokes
by Rebel Scumb
but a lot of jokes are made funnier by her presence. A good comedy team is a diverse balance of different players, and Shirley brings a lot to the table, but she has the most thankless job on the show
-
idk if it was fish but Levar sure had a funny cameo. As long as my rack role model Brie is still on there a single f%@k I could not give.

Assuming they can't get Bill Murray for two shows.

They should beef up Eddie Pepitone's janitor character.

Chevy added something positive to the show... Watch the episodes and without Chevy there, many of the biggest laughs are missing.
by happybunni
Not quite sure how they're going to fill that void.... If they do get a next season.
-
Harmon should have given him creative control over the character. Same with the new people. All the actors should get creative control, because no one knows the characters better than the actors.

Chevy chase seems like a asshole, why would you disrespect the show your starring on?
by Norman Colson
Is your fucking Ego so that out of control that you cannot be respectful of the other actors who work with you. You gotta say that they're shit sucks if it's so bad why the fuck are you there? Asshole! Chevy your not that funny, bill murray is funnier, shit dan akyroid is more fucking hilarious! You sucked on chuck and the chevy chase show was shit compared to keenan ivory wayans. lol. yes i said it! Good riddence!
-
Old actors are the lowest form of actor in Hollywood. In other words, enjoy retirement if you feel sitcoms are beneath you. Even Betty White at 90 knows they aren't looking for her to do dramatic leading roles on cable television. It is what it is.
-
neither does sterns response
-
just pretend he's still there and he never left. Or it's A Beautiful Mind meme, where they all collectively imagined him
-
I love Chevy Chase, I have since I was a kid growing up in the 80's. You can argue over how funny he is but I always enjoyed his goofy performances in the Vacation movies & Fletch & early SNL. I eve love crappy movies like Foul Play. His face just makes me laugh. I have LOVED Community since it started. It is one of the funniest, weirdest, geekiest shows to ever exist IMO. I love the characters, the writing and of course the ensemble nailed it every week. I also get why it's always had low ratings, It's such an odd show. It was never going to be a show for everyone, which sucks. I was really sad about Harmon's dismissal, I get that he's sorta a brilliant asshole, but he was integral to the show and how it worked. I'm one of hose fans who just wished they would've canceled the show last year because it'll never be the same without Harmon. They could recover losing Pierce, moreso than anyone else in the study group. But who cares as it's never going to be the same show again :( As to Chevy. As I stated I've always loved the guy, he's always cracked me up, even in some really terrible movies.... But it has been vey clear for a longtime that the guy IS a Fuckin douchebag and really doesn't get it. Good riddance dude, you managed to really fuck up one of my favorite shows. Fuck Chevy Chase! BTW I would LOVE for Bill Murray(who IS the SHIT) to show up, even if it's a short cameo, just as a nice FU to Chevy.... but it's never going to happen
-
Those same people you worked with (including the people behind the camera) you might work with in future projects so why be an asshole? Though I guess in CC's case, he probably doesn't have much left in him anyways.

One episode of Community brilliantly mocks and satirizes Chevy Chase and his entire career
by Bobo_Vision
It's the episode where Pierce wants to watch Kickpuncher with Abed, Troy, Shirley, and Chang, and they all make jokes while watching the DVD, but Chevy's jokes aren't funny. So Chevy hires a team of writers to help him be funny, and he abuses them and is entirely full of himself, and the writers realize that he likes gay jokes so just give him a lot of those. Finally, when this fails, Chevy leaves their apartment in shame because his delivery of his lame jokes is off and unfunny...and while leaving he falls and they all laugh. Chevy then realizes he can win laughs with pratfalls, not realizing they are laughing at him and not with him, and that he's still not really funny.

Chevy's love for unfunny gay jokes goes back to his SNL hosting gig in 85'-'86
by Bobo_Vision
He kept recommending to the SNL writers that they should have a sketch where the one openly gay cast member, Terry Sweeney, is weighed every week to see if he has AIDS. He insisted this would be hilarious. He ended up having to apologize to Sweeney, which he reluctantly and furiously did.

I say keep Pierce on the show forever. Only he's the lava lamp that sits on the table in the study room.
by WerePlatypus
-
I mean I think he's been funny, but he definitely wasn't the source of most of the hilarity. Now if they lost Danny Pudhi & Donald Glover than this show would go down fast.
