Confirmed: WIRE’s Cutty To Play Tyreese On WALKING DEAD!!

Chad Coleman, who played troubled former boxer Cutty Wise on “The Wire,” has been confirmed to play troubled NFL vet Tyreese on “The Walking Dead.”
In the comics, Tyreese becomes lover to Michonne and Carol and Rick’s chief lieutenant following the death of Shane.
Unlike David Morrissey, Coleman looks a little like the comics character he’s playing.

i knew it! He just looked like him in the comics. Actually hoping that he avoids becoming a love interest for carol and Michonne. carol looks like she's moving onto darryl. andrea should hook up with him. Michonne should go for a broad and shake things up.
-
Looks like the new lad will be killed off before the end of this season then.

NEW T-Dog 15 is done! Still I'd rather have the father and son from S1!
by HollywoodHellraiser
Thats the storyline with the most potential.
-
first one in, first one out. don't rock the boat.
-
People who have been able to spot filming seem to indicate that Tyreese spends most of this season in Woodbury. Also he's the favorite Kirkman has talked about showing up in season 8. Hopefully, if this is all true, and he's in Woodbury, he'll be the one to help turn Andrea around.

what happened to that mexican dude and his family in s1
by rakesh patel
that dude decided to spilt from rick and make a run to somewhere else.
-
They could always spin it off, like in those webisodes earlier this season
-
With the "only on black person on the show at a time" thing everyone's griping about. Michonne is joining the group, Oscar's in, and he's growing on me and Tyreese is coming. Oh, and Morgan will at least make an appearance later in the season. I would count on one of them dying by season's end, but not all 4.

Every morning, one episode...one hour on the elliptical. Great way to start the day.

If Tyrese is in Woodbury then it really won't be Tyrese in anything but name...
by Stegman84
I mean two of the defining events that made Tyrese the great character that he was just don't seem like they'd fit the current show. The whole thing with his daughter and her boyfriend, and the fallout of that doesn't feel like it would fit at any point along the current flow of the show and storyline, unless they hold it back for a long time after he joins the group, and they eventually go mobile again. Meanwhile the post tragedy rampage has pretty much already been done now, as they pretty much gave that to Rick on the show when he went back into the prison by himself. Personally I think I would have preferred they just bring back Lennie James character from the pilot at this point. Mind you, Chad Coleman is a brilliant actor, and sure to be a fine addition to the cast, I just don't see his Tyrese as likely to have much in common with the 'fan favourite' comic book version.
-
glad to see him getting a significant role like this.
-
what ive herd to be an awesome character being played by an awesome actor! been rewatching season 3 recently so good!
-
...but not exactly on par with Downey Jr. as Tony Stark (talent levels obviously vary). ...and yeah, I knew that one would work from day 1.

When they said it was someone from The Wire, I was hoping Slim Charles
by tangcameo
But then again I haven't read the comics. When I read Game of Thrones before seeing the TV version it sucked all the fun out of the TV version. So I'm avoiding the comics.

Great casting, and my bet for next major death...
by Tyrion's Tyrannical Todger
Next person to go has got to be Daryl. It's all set up to go that way. Merle back on the scene. Some proper fratricidal action, I reckon.
-
... because all black people look alike. OK, that's a slight exaggeration, but there are still only like six black faces MAX.
-
I hope his character gets to say and contribute more to the show than T-Dawg did. www.nonipplesonthesuit.com
-
Then don't mess around. Snoop should've been Michonne. Just give her a nail gun.
-
Cutty was exactly who I pictured as Tyreese while reading the comics. The bond Tyreese forms with Rick in the comic is one of my favorite aspects of the series. And they'd better not mess that or Tyreese going on his rampage locked in a room full of zombies only to be found later "What took you guys so long?" After hating on this show from episode 5 of season one all the way to the finale of season 2 (which was a good finale) count me in the choir of people getting back on board. Still hate Andrea though, dear God how could you ruin such a kick ass character ("Looks like my sniper got your sniper")

Chad Coleman's Cutty was the heart and soul of the Wire. Funny, when I was playing Walking Dead on PS3 the main character Lee reminded me of Cutty a bit.

The whole point of the zombie apolocalpse i have felt is that it accelerates darwins natural selection.
by rakesh patel
people need a skill set to survive, and the weak and infirmed will perish. In my mind that means Hershel should be a goner. hobbling around on crutches he's a liabilty. merle isnt, his lack of hand now comes with knife ( incidentally it the same reason why rick doesn't need to get his hand cut off, no point two people with the same shit) Andrea quickly got it, carol didnt ( or maybe her damsel in distress cosying up to darryl is her skill in staying alive.. it certainly led t-dog to accelerate his demise for her) I'd really like Daryl to stay. a team could use more then one alpha. witness jack, locke and sawyer in lost. He's a interesting character who also hasn't had as much screens time as he should have. It just seems that a group surviving like this would be top heavy with stronger members just in order to survive. why the fuck havent they encountered any doomsday preppers as yet?

I like to pretend that the show will have a racial balance similar to Atlanta.
by Baked
That means 4 black people in the cast all at the same time, minimum. (And then watch white audiences flee in terror in fear of a black supporting cast. "Why are none of these colored folks doing laundry, Buffy?") Shieeeet. No, but seriously, a show with Lennie James, Chad Coleman, and Danai Gurira every week would kick my ass.
-
Nov. 21, 2012, 3:19 p.m. CST
Seriously? Lennie James back? You know i made that happen right?
by rakesh patel
That's fucking awesome news. Also because Morgan, Tyrese and Michonne none of those characters are "filler" characters. well not at least if they are written for correctly. Seriously. this season is proving to be rather good.
-

It's sad that what makes a show good for some people is a lot of black characters.
by Jayemel
That's as racist as the opposite perspective.
-
James would return. Excellent. I haven't read the comics, so I have no idea about the Tyrese character, but I hope they handle him better on the TV show than they've done with the purportedly awesome Michonne so far.
-
If Rick ended up dying eventually, and the show passed on to Tyreese. Assuming, of course, they include his daughter and her boyfriend. Someone with a strong family dynamic is what's needed for a lead in this series. Upon introduction, Tyreese will probably be a one demensional bad ass (who is a horrible shot but killer with a hammer)like Michonne, until time can be given to develop his character. And no- Rick's little rampage in the prison was nothing compared to what Tyreese did in the gym.
-

@jayemel It's casting the right actors in these roles that makes it good.
by Humie Bubbie
There are a lot of black people in Atlanta. There are a lot of black characters in the comic. WTF is the problem? The proportion of white characters to non-white characters in most network and cable shows is so far out of whack with reality.
-
Nov. 21, 2012, 9:41 p.m. CST
@jayemel - Your life must be so diffcult having to tolerate all those black faces on screen.
by Bricklyne
Oh poor you.
-
Zombies prefer dark meat over white 3 to 1
-
I didn't say I had a problem with the black characters. I have a problem with people saying a show/story isn't good unless it has more of X (black, hispanic, gay, women, children, etc) character type.
-
Glen's losing a body part, Maggies going to get raped, Daryl is either going to get his head loped off, or be sniped in the back by Andrea (Who has already taken a shot at him when she was a bad shot) and then squish the baby. Either way, Its going to be Merle who throws the Guv to the zombies and be left as king of the prison.
-
They were on their way to Atlanta because that was supposed to be a safe zone, just thought I'd point that out.

Thoughts on who might die and other thoughts on the characters based on the comics
by Prof. Pop-Cult
* -- There's a rumor that Andrea will die this season, based on a Tweet by Laurie Holden which she quickly deleted. * -- I worry about Glen's fate this season. It feels like the producers are planning at least one more death this season, and either Andrea or Glen seem to be the one (or both). I am still very disturbed by how Glen was killed in the comic book series. * -- I speculate that the producers may be looking to turn Beth into becoming more similar to the comic book version of Andrea (who is a fan favorite by those who read the comic), since the TV series version has become so dissimilar over the episodes. A lot of this may depend on the actress who plays Beth (whether she can plausibly pull it off), how the writers can evolve her role throughout the episodes, and whether Andrea is killed off. * -- It will be great to see Lenny James return as Duane. But I hope they have Duane do more than his comic book counterpart, who also returned after a long absence but just didn't do much and then was killed off. * -- I just don't see Daryl getting killed off (this season, at least). He's really popular with the audience, and seems like a character whom the producers will keep around until toward the final season. Sure, it could be argued that Tyrese would be there to be Rick's proverbial #2. But I would argue that keeping both around backing Rick, competing against the other, would make for more compelling drama. * -- I have no idea what will happen with Merle. It seems obvious that he will die this season, perhaps too obvious. But maybe he stays around, re-joins Rick's group, and in terms of casting replaces Herschel as the "old guy". (Which means, Herschel would die.) * -- So if Merle somehow is plausibly written to stick around for Season 4, Herschel could be on the way out. What is his purpose at this point? In this zombie apocalypse scenario, things become who can survive the most and what, in terms of a TV drama in this context, what do they bring to the group? Herschel does have his medical expertise, but that might not be enough.

Waltkovacs- I see Wire actors all the time on tv, so much so much so that its become a running joke with my wife
by Monolith_Jones
Especially on Law And Order, where I've seen Bodie, Clay Davis,Ziggy, Perelma, Omar's boy who gas a recurring role as Ice T's son in SVU, and I believe Avon. Ziggy was also in Generation Kill. Beadie was on the Office( as was Idris Elba) and a bunch of films. Domenic West is in damn near everything( I laughed that in John Carter the first person you see is "McNutty" and a few minutes later Walter White) Wallace was in Chronicle, Michael is a lead on the new 90210, the Bunk and Freamon are on Treme, Frank Sobotka is on True Blood, Omar is on Boardwalk Empire and will play ODB in the biopic, Carcetti is on Game Of Thrones. That's off the top of my head, the real shame is that the award shows at the time completely ignored the show and its stars. From http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117927818?categoryid=1945&cs=1&s=h&p=0 Anonymously, several Emmy voters tried to explain their reluctance to nominate the show: It's so multilayered, so dense, that it's difficult to tune in midway through the season, thereby making it practically impenetrable to new viewers. The plot takes place in the drug-infested streets of west Baltimore, and with the vast majority of Emmy voters based in Southern California, there's little connection. The grim surroundings and coarse language also might turn some people off. With the series being shot on location, the actors aren't in Los Angeles or New York, being seen around town and helping build publicity for the show. Out of sight, out of mind.

I could see Andrea being killed at the gates in place of Tyrese.
by FreeBeer
-
Not the creators. they thought they could get away with turning Tyrese into the miserable "t-Dawg" and were probably taken aback at the Internet chatter and complaints, such that they woke up and became aware that the audience gave a damn. so clearly they are in damage control mode, racially, and might well overcompensate a bit with more black characters than some folks will feel comfortable with...of course those same folks never mind if a show is totally white.

The actress who played Amy should have played Andrea
by Monolith_Jones
I guess Darabont had his favorites though but from the beginning I didn't like TV Andrea, she wasn't anything like the comic character and as time went on she got further and further away. That would have been ok if the new characterization was any good but it wasn't. TV Andrea has been a million times more insufferable than TV Lori ever was.
-
no way around it and the wire was bigger than the awards shows deserved a pulitzer i dont watch network tv...guess thats why i missed all those appearances nice thing about the wire...100 years from now it will still be relevant, while most of todays network shows will be relics

Yep Walter I know awards don't mean much but it would have been nice
by Monolith_Jones
In an interview David Simon said he thinks the largely minority cast wasn't nominated because the voters figured the actors weren't really acting, they were like that in real life. That's absolutely awful, as is the attitude of " we don't see anyone from that show at any parties or events so we won't nominate them" Awful and most likely true. I enjoy things like SVU but it's like a cartoon compared to the Wire . They do share one thing, though, Det. Munch.

Huh. I always thought T-Dog was just the tv version of Tyreese.
by cromulent

I believe you're right. T-Dawg was the neutered, version of Tyrese. then, there was enough fan complaint and accusations of racism due to the disgraceful treatment of the character that they backtracked, and are trying to get back on track. we'll see.
