No way Andre Braugher can carry a show. No way.

    by Raptor Jesus

He's a solid 'b' actor, but nothing special.

  • Nov. 16, 2012, 5:34 p.m. CST

    but first comment

    by baronweazle

Never saw an episode but heard it was really good. Pity, but I guess this opens up Ryan's schedule for Beverly Hills Cop.

  • Nov. 16, 2012, 5:39 p.m. CST

v1cious do even know the definition of smart?

    by Xiphos_2

becasue boy Last Resort isn't it. In fact if you placed Smart on the top of the world Last Resort would be at the bottom.

  • Nov. 16, 2012, 5:39 p.m. CST

    I tried.

    by Truxton Spangler

Didn't work. Resurrect Terriers! Or Rubicon.

    Too bad...

    by evilhoban

...I love this show. I prefer it to Revolution...

  • Nov. 16, 2012, 5:41 p.m. CST

The pilot would of made a average episode of the other limits.

The writing was on the wall for Last Resort...

    by WeylandYutani

when ABC only requested two more scripts. They are most likely looking to bring the A, B & C plots to a conclusion. I disagree with Raptor Jesus. Braugher is one of the best TV actors working today. LR is big, expensive but that is not Andre Braugher's fault. Anyone who has seen his work in Homicide knows his skills.

  • Nov. 16, 2012, 5:46 p.m. CST

I watched the first 4 eps of both shows.

    by BooBoosDaddy

Neither was particularly compelling. I couldn't follow the myriad storylines in 666, and I couldn't get past the half Asian chick with the Australian accent and the face that looks like a giraffe that ran into a wall at 70 mph on "Last Resort." I know I'm shallow, but she killed "Dollhouse" for me, too. Weirdly long face.

  • I hope they at least can wrap up the storyline though....what little of it there was. Really too bad Breaking Bad is ending, Braugher would've been fantastic on that. Hey Herc, do me a favor, drop a line to Espenson and tell her to tell Joss that Shermdawg wants Braugher on S.H.I.E.L.D.

  • Nov. 16, 2012, 5:52 p.m. CST

    by Chadley BeBay

Check out "Thief"which starred Andre Braugher. It was like a 6 episode miniseries and I believe its on HULU. Its fucking amazing he can totally carry a show!

    It was UNAMERICAN!

    by dude_gimme_tabs

TV show that gave us the premise of something questionable happening at the highest levels of the government and the military, but presented in a straightforward manner for mass consumption. Of course it was canned.

  • Nov. 16, 2012, 6:08 p.m. CST

    by dude_gimme_tabs

The audience of American Guns would never believe it.

    by LethargicJ

I just started watching Last Resort a few days ago and have been ranting and raving about how much I loved the first episode to everybody. So of course this happens.

raptor_jesus on the money about Braugher

    by RandySavage

A concept like that required a top talent (likely one that wouldn't do TV) to carry it it... Braugher was/is nowhere near the level required.

last resort 8pm timeslot killed it.should of been 9 or 10

    by mike

  • Because he is simply talented..I was also one of those that thought in Homicides hey day he was above everyone else I was watching on TV. He has done a lot of great work..granted most of that I saw all thru the 90's and early 2000's. i havent seen a much of his work in the past decade..I'll admit wasnt on par with what I saw in the early part of his career "Rise of the Silver Surfer anyone"...IDK, and no LR was not his strongest work but I can't put the failure of the show on him.

PROVIDE EXAMPLES of why Last Resort wasn't good...

    by Acid_Frio

I liked it and thought it had potential. Shawn Ryan, as much as I think he's very creative and smart, can't catch a break with basic cable.

  • Unfortunately, he's also an average-looking middle aged black man, so this was doomed from the get-go. Last Resort had a lot of great ideas but one B-plot too many, never really knowing what to do with Serrat, who vacillated wildly between cunning manipulator and whiny twat, and relying too heavily on the "invader of the week" storyline. Had they buckled down and dealt with the evolving politics of the island earlier as well as showing us more self-sufficient, nice native people instead of keeping them as background, it might have stood a chance. Then again, post-Lost, ABC can't really carry an action show, we all know this by now. It's the home of melodrama and post-laugh track comedy. If it were on CBS, it'd be guaranteed three seasons.

  • Nov. 16, 2012, 6:45 p.m. CST

Last Resort just made me miss Homicide and Jericho

    by tangcameo

Braugher needs a show that can equal him. I kind of hope he and David Simon team up for something again. The nuke part of the show made me long for season 1 of Jericho because everyone was setting off nukes. Plus I've become more attached to Elementary, even though its L&O:CI light. Sorry Andre.

  • Nov. 16, 2012, 6:52 p.m. CST

    LR's problem wasn't the talent

    by Truxton Spangler

part of it was the premise, a lot of it was the execution. I couldn't tell what it wanted to be -- was it a conspiracy show? An action show? A soapy relationship show? It had all of those, and didn't do any of them well. I didn't like how it jumped around, and didn't care about any of the characters. And for such an outlandish premise, the writing had to be water-tight, and it wasn't. Too bad. Some good ingredients involved. Bad recipe.

666 would have been much better...

    by jimmy_009

...had they not gone the route of glossing it up for the Desperate Housewives crowd. ABC just couldn't help themselves, so everything was glossy and beautiful and the women were catty and shop, shop, shopping. The core idea was solid and it had some decent moments. You could tell there was a good story, it was just buried under too much polish. In other hands it could have been a great series.

  • Nov. 16, 2012, 7:12 p.m. CST

    Didn't watch any of those

    by RainesMaker

And anyone who thinks Rubicon was good TV is a phony intellectual. Rubicon took one episode and stretched it to 3 episodes. Snoozicon, plain and simple. As far as Last Resort... didn't watch it. 666 Park Avenue... didn't watch it. Partners... didn't watch it. And apparently neither did most of America. Try harder network TV, when you have shows like Walking Dead, Justified, AHS, SoA, Breaking Bad etc. people expect better.

Last Resort: Good Show. Horrible Timeslot.

    by Yiggy

8pm on a Thursday? Up against "Big Bang Theory?" Who thought that was a good idea? There is counter-programming and then there is just Network assisted suicide. At 9 or 10pm, it stood a shot. At 8pm it was DOA. Enjoyed the show while it lasted...

In fact, I don't watch any Network Dramas anymore. They can fuck themselves. I'd rather work an extra hour a week and pay for another pay station than waste my time getting invested in a show that's almost doomed to failure before it begins because of a refusal to give a show a chance to bloom anymore.

  • Nov. 16, 2012, 8:28 p.m. CST

What a waste... Maybe it'll work on cable TV...

    by Norman Colson

I didnt watch last resort and 666 i didnt even know it was only ttytt, which was sad because those shows had horrible marketing. if you want your show to succeed it must start strong out the gate with the higher ups behind it!

  • NBC unfortunately seems to be trying to emulate them to a certain degree, and it seems to be working.

  • ...because Terry O'Quinn was enough to make me want to check it out. For whatever reason, I haven't watched a single minute of it. I guess I can just delete them now.

Last Resorts problem: The Island. I mean...

    by DrPain

it could have been a kick ass show about a renegade sub and it's crew being hunted every week. At least that's what I thought it was going to be about. A little of Hunt for Red October and a little Das Boot. But nope, they had to do the stupid Island thing. LAME!

    Andre Braugher...

    by scors54

...needs a show with writing and dialogue worthy of his talents. he was the most amazing actor on TV as Frank Pembelton on "Homicide",and the fact that he only won and was nominated for a single Emmy for that character is almost as ludicrous as "The Wire" never being nominated.Too bad "Thief" never took off.

  • Nov. 16, 2012, 10:30 p.m. CST

Andre Braugher is one hell of an actor

    by yourSTEPDADDY

NOT saying he did bad or anything, but i think the fact that hes old and not pretty boy handsome has a lot to do with it... women need something to cream themselves to (thats what i gather based off how so many girls like Game of Thrones (because they mostly like it for the pretty boys)) if they had cast a "pretty boy", i think the show wouldve done better or last longer. and if im right, fuck shallow women ps: imagine if idris elba had been cast instead... im sure this wouldve gotten a few more eps

LAST RESORT was unwatchably bad. Glad it's gone.

    by Nintendarth

I barely made it through the pilot. It was so unrealistic I was halfway expecting a THE EVENT moment where a magical teleporter would show up or something. Ugh. Just dreadful. I wonder how many of my plot predictions came true. Was there a sudden disease episode/viral outbreak episode? Was there one about political topsy-turvy intrigue? Was there one about a day-in-the-life of a lesser character? Was there one where there was an underground boxing ring/cage fighting ring & the hero had to go in and kick some arse? Good riddance to -bad- rubbish.

Called it going in, but the ride was great while it lasted.

    by DarkHawke

If ABC had wanted Last Resort to survive, they wouldn't have dumped it on Thursdays at 8. Damn good show, though. Braugher did his usual stellar job and I was impressed at how well it was scripted. It could have gone off the rails at any point, and maybe it would have had it gone on longer, but it kept me engaged and guessing. Whenever I can't figure out where a show's going next, it's a REAL good show! Coulda been the next "24," but there's the fucktards at ABC for ya. Glad that Terry O'Quinn got released from that half-assed series he'd hooked up with. He was SO much better than the show, it wasn't even funny. I look forward to seeing him in much better efforts.

I have watched every episode of this show, and wish it would have continued. I wanted to see where some of the different stories were going. I do agree, there were too many plots going at once, but I guess the writers felt they had an entire building full of people and wanted a wide-variety of plotlines. The last episode ended with the female lead trapped beneath the basement floor. Guess we'll never know what she found down there!!! Unless it was a letter of cancellation from ABC executives!

  • Tune in on Sunday Nov. 25 to find out what's at the bottom of that spiral staircase. The series is not over yet.

    1. "haters gonna hate" really that's still being used? Why don't you really show you can't form a coherent and compelling argument and call people racist for not liking Last Resort because it stars Andre Braugher who's black. Braugher tries with what he's given but the materiel he's working with is piss poor and he can only do so much with it. 2. it goes the other way, stop setting the bar so low that you think badly written garbage with bad storytelling and worst casting is some how good and compelling TV. Demand more of yourself and networks or you will be fed a steady diet of Last Resort, Revolution and the like. shows marketed for the easily impressed and low IQ crowds, is that who you want to be associated with? 3 "Not 100% accurate" true it isn't and couldn't be but its not even 1% accurate, which is also a problem.

It's only now its been cancelled that i realised that this is one of a very few programs that has a black lead. Really if women and men wanted eye candy there was plenty on last resort to cater for all sorts. Its not that Andre Braugher can't carry a show. Its that this show had no chance. it just wasn't allowed to gain an audience. shit sometimes happens. I honestly think that if you sold it and 666 as a 13 part miniseries ( with some parts resolved but an open ended finale) it would have done a hell of a lot better. 4400 did that. remember how excellent that mini series was? then they went and fucked it up with a series.

    by MrD

  • Virtually every science fiction/fantasy tv show set in the modern world can't justify the inclusion of its fantasy elements and, as a result, turns to the biggest fantasy of all: religion. If you don't believe me, go look up interviews with the creators of various cancelled tv shows and you'll see that virtually -every- time the answer to all the mysterious events is that God did it. Minuteman - God did it. John Doe - God did it. Miracles - God did it. Lazarus Man - God did it. Quantum Leap - God did it. Battlestar Galactica (1st/remake) - God did it. Otherworld - God did it. Day Break - God did it. Seven (7) Days - God did it. It's just - freaking - awful. So, you wanna know what was going on in any fantasy/sci fi tv show set in the modern world? God did it. yawn. pass.

  • Non-creative minds think (hah!) alike. God is the easiest, simplest excuse for lazy writing. They've done it since the greeks. heck, you could even interpret the ending of LOST as 'God did it.' Yawn. Pass. Awful writing sucks.

  • God did it. It might be a conclusion of : The solution to our problems is peace and lack of religion, but there will always be those that cling to religion and force separation and war through ignorance.

    @ django Re: cliffhangers

    by Ray Tchoulakian

In response to your question, yes actually it is hard for series to not end a season on a cliffhanger at the point of cancellation. Series like Flash Forward and The Event were given full-season orders by their respective networks early on, so they wrote and produced their series as they had intended. By the time their first seasons had finished production, the networks had not yet informed them of their cancellation, so they had produced their finales with the intent and hope of a second season in mind. Sure, when word finally was made public about their fates, the viewers were left holding the proverbial dicks in their hands, but the blame shouldn't be placed on the writers. They wanted their series to be renewed, and obviously wrote their finales in such a way to set up a mystery arc for season 2. I loved Last Resort and hoped it would make the cut, but knowing it won't see life past episode 13 I hope the writers can wrap up all the arcs in time.

See, what it was doing was taking a blowtorch to the meme "If the President of the United States does it, it's not a crime." Nobody wants to watch uncomfortable truths on television, period. That said, it was all over the place, but it's sad that ABC couldn't give it more of a chance on a different slot, but I will enjoy it for as long as it lasts.

    by oisin5199

Your analysis of these shows is laughably simplistic. It's about more than just religion. It's the human condition. There's something at the heart of much of Western narrative that could unsatisfyingly be called "mystery." That bit of unknown, the unseeable force that works behind the scenes, that fantasy that some intelligence is directing things, that sense that "something else is going on" but we can't quite get to it. This is what most science fiction is based on. Heck, look at the first Star Trek movie, look at 2001. The more simple-minded tend to interpret that mystery as "God" and I agree religion tends to dumb down that pursuit of mystery in a way that alleviates responsibility and agency for its believers. But to say that all those shows (and I'd include Lost and so many others on that list) were simply "God did it" is to misunderstand the nature of the human psyche and the complexity of possible stories that can be created based on this premise. Sometimes things happen for a reason or coincidence, but people tend to believe that something else is making events happen, bringing people together lifetime after lifetime (see Cloud Atlas). It's a crucial human fantasy. You don't have to be a theist to be romanced by this fantasy that there's more out there than science can quantify (or at least can quantify yet). Or the desire that through some macrocosmic perspective all the terrible shit that happens in this world makes sense. This isn't "awful writing" but rather tapping into feelings as ancient as the planet. Granted, some do it better than others. But it would be a sad world without these kinds of imaginings.

  • I approach life from the scientific method. That is, whatever is provable can be accepted into the discussion. That which can't, can't. So, the way I would approach it discussing a topic with a religious person, for instance, is ... fine, we can discuss the universe, provided you leave ALL references to religion at the door. We can ONLY discuss what is KNOWN to exist, and can ONLY discuss what is FACTUALLY PROVABLE and REPEATABLE in a SCIENTIFIC platform. So, literally, by that definition, you MUST leave ANY and all MACROCOSMIC material out, unless you're talking only about star placement in the universe or patterns of planetary alignment. That so-called mystery is fine, IF you're trying to solve it through legitimate means, meaning entirely scientific and in NO WAY EMOTIONAL or EMOTION-BASED means. But I think you seriously overestimate the talent of the writers of those shows, who did indeed attribute the entirety of their arguments to God and did not put the value on ANY human action in explaining the so-called mysteries they made up. Furthermore, the fact is - those shows simply pin the SUPERNATURAL or SUPER-POWERED elements on GOD because they don't have any other explanation. They're not real, and they don't want to go into a complicated explanation. Hence, most shows/movies/etc. dealing with sci-fi and fantasy in the modern world can't simply leave it at aliens, because people have come to realize aliens don't exist. So - they say GODDDDDD. Because it can't be somehow disproved, since it's impossible to prove a cosmic negative.

Here's the real reason why Last Resort failed.

    by Chuck Miller

This would have made for a helluva miniseries. But within three episodes, the show lurched into a stalemate. The submarine has the nukes to protect itself, but it can't go home. The sub is used for several different "search and repair" missions, but that's like using Air Force One as a FedEx plane. Any of the characters on the island - the warlord, the NATO operators, that hot chick from Dollhouse - became soap opera fodder the minute anybody drafted a plotline around them. And the minute they went into that mind-bending mind-control drug episode... Christ, if they're going to re-do "The Naked Time" at least have William Shatner appear as a guest star. Let's face it. The writers probably didn't have enough material to sustain a five-year series, let alone 13 episodes. At least I hope the writers drafted some sort of trapdoor episode to wrap up this series. Yeah, I'm thinking they don't.

  • Nov. 19, 2012, 5:36 p.m. CST

Probably for best Last Resort was cancelled

    by Bass Ackwards

I liked the show well enough, but the last episode seemed to suggest they're digging in their heels to keep everything in place. The premise and consequences are a neat idea, bending over backwards to keep it all running in place seems less so (especially in regards to the drug lord, don't see any reason why they would continue just allowing him to thrive and fuck with them).

    Last Resort Was Offensive

    by LeftFoot

To people that work and have worked on U.S. Submarines (I'm not one of them) the show was disrespectful and offensive. Basically everyone on board was pretty much okay with mutiny from the US Navy and taking pot shots at Washington DC? Even burned out SEALs would have put bullets in the heads of the officers on that sub. The show never overcame the ridiculousness of its own premise. Andre Braugher is a great actor. But from the first episode I wondered if they hired a black commander so they wouldn't have a white commander taking 'near miss' nuke missile shots at DC. > Partners simply wasn't funny. > 666 dead end was shlocky dreck.

now that was damn fine television. A focused episode, tightly structured with standouts from key actors. You want the mystery explained by science. You want the mystery solved. Ironically, that's the most fantasy element yet. In life, the mystery is never solved.
