Tom Hardy Signs Up For SPLINTER CELL!!
The Kidd here...
I'm just waiting for Quint to pop on here and say he told us so...
He predicted weeks ago that the video games would be the next group of hot properties that Hollywood started gobbling up, and he's looking like a bit of a prophet these days. After countless failed adaptations over the years, there's a small segment of the creative population starting to take video games seriously as potential tent poles moving forward.
Significant progress has been made in locking up Michael Fassbender for the big screen version of ASSASSIN'S CREED with Ubisoft methodically trying to build up a film division to take advantage of these popular titles, and they're at it again in getting Tom Hardy to sign on the line that is dotted for a big screen adaptation of Tom Clancy's SPLINTER CELL series of games.
Eric Warren Singer (THE INTERNATIONAL and the Black List screenplay AMERICAN BULLSHIT) has been given the nod to pen the script, according to Variety. A search for a director should commence fairly soon, as Ubisoft shops SPLINTER CELL around to the studios with Warner Bros. and Paramount already taking an interest.
Who knows? Maybe if these films start to take off, there is hope yet for a HALO or GEARS OF WAR or BIOSHOCK to finally get off the ground.

Played the first 2 or 3 installments. Splinter Cell pretty much ruined the Metal Gear games for me. Best spy games ever.

It seems the only thing they have is a list signings and nothing else, how can that be?
-
Two of my favorite game series of all time with two of the best actors working right now signed on. Thank God the Peter Berg Splinter Cell never got off the ground! I'm assuming they will do a younger, pre-retirement Sam Fisher. Here's hoping for Idris Elba as Lambert and Emily Blunt as Grimmsdottir.

Quint "predicted" video games would be the next group of hot properties?
by loafroaster
Assassin's Creed has been in the pipeline for at least a year. Plus this movie. Hardly a 'group' of hot properties. There's never been a lull in video game-to-movies, they've been churning out stuff (like the latest installments of RE and Silent Hill) for ages.

So the likes of Resident Evil, Tomb Raider and Prince of Persia were low-budget, straight-to-video affairs?

"Plus this movie. Hard(l)y a 'group' of hot properties." Your welcome. Unless you think it's retarded, in which case, I'm sorry.
-
They've recast Michael Ironside in the new Splinter Cell game with Eric Johnson (Whitney from Smallville). Not only does this continue the ridiculous de-aging of Fisher with every new game it also means he's not going to have Ironside's awesome voice. Hardy is a much better choice, maybe there's still time to recast the game...

When did video games stop becoming a haven for film adaptations?
-
TV is going through a second golden age, while feature film studios turn out total crap. A trend of videogames as source material is just another gimmick, and would likely only continue the plunge. Plus, without Ironside, no one wants to see Splinter Cell.

Comics are well known for their narrative. A lot of the films borrow bits and pieces from famous comic works. A lot of the Batman films borrowed from Batman: Year One and The Dark Knight Returns. A comic sells you on its story and visuals. A game sells you on its gameplay and the story is an after thought. That isn't saying their aren't games out there that have great stories. Assassins Creed will make a fine film. Something like Castlevania though which gets tossed around though will not. There are a couple of nuggets out there that can translate to great films but I can count all of those on my fingers using both hands.

The studios are so desperate for 'known' properties...
by Orbots Commander
...that they're dragging this old hound out now for another round of beatings. Seriously, think back, video game movies have been around since the 80s, and they've almost never worked. Why start now? Free advice to studios: just use your library cards and find a good book, or series of books to adapt.
-
But can Roger Avery pull it off?
-
Gone are the days when story was an after thought. You need only look at The Mass Effect series, Red Dead Redemption, or a dozen other titles, where not only are the stories in today's good an coherent, but most are BETTER then today's blockbuster movies. Take the Mass effect trilogy. This series has probably been the greatest work of science fiction in the past 10 years. and no film maker has successfully created an entire universe like this since early Lucas, and Roddenberry.
-
that is the most jizzworthy news I've heard this year! Splinter Cell + Tom Hardy = a fucking impossibly awesome Splinter Cell movie with Tom Hardy in it! and the best part....Tom Hardy is in it!!!!!!!!!! He breaks necks and slices throats like no one else can. Love his fierce physicality. Looking forward to seeing his take on Mad Max. Oh and those other games, Bioshock, Gears of War, even Assasin's Creed can suck my balls. Splinter Cell is Bourne with cajones.

Much like Aaron Eckhardt after his participation in the epic blockbuster "megahit" The Dark Knight, Tom Hardy has nowhere to go but down. Conversely, 2012 seems to be the peak of what's known as "The Year of Joseph Gordon-Levitt", Michael Caine will always be known as "Alfred" by the Twitter Generation, Morgan Freeman will continue to collect paychecks with the minimum amount of effort required, and Anne "my short haircut makes me look like a 13 year old boy and retroactively destroys all sex appeal I ever had" Hathaway, who I'm sure will be great on Broadway.. but Christian? He'll endure.

Part of the appeal of the Sam Fisher character is because..
by Aidil_Afham
he's a cold war vet, been doing the sneaky ninja thing from way back, and was asked to come out of retirement to serve the nation, without that glory and patriotism bullshit (which I fear they would change to appeal to the American Fuck Yeah audience) It was great seeing him trying on high tech gadgets, being an OG and all. At least this was the premise early on, now they cater to the mainstream dudebros that just wanna shoot everything instead of being a fucking ghost. So anyways, I don't know how they'll deal with his age, Sam Fisher is more of a George Clooney, Bruce Willis badassery, Tom Hardy is young. I'm cautiously optimistic..

But MGS on PS2 had a fair bit of sneaking around and being stealthy, especially early on. That's what I was comparing it to. The story in MG is over-the-top ridiculous in a way only the Japanese could do, but it's great. I just think the stealthy aspect of the game was handled far, far better in Splinter Cell than MG.

Seriously, when is that movie due to come out? Nothing with Hardy in it yet? I mean, we saw the wigger dude in that shitty Robocop suit, and that's been pushed back to 2019 or some shit. ( Never saw the dude in the Killing, but people on here have descibed his character as a "wigger", so relax).
-
FACT! Very similar storyline, just exchange "Forerunners" with "Engineers" and you've pretty much got the same thing. Except Halo has been building on these themes and this 'verse for 11 years. I think if any game is going to break out and be the first one to show hollywood and audiences it can make a great movie, it'll be Halo.

Thats the biggest problem with the series. Take Halo 4, for example. First time I beat it (launch day), I had a hard time following all of the story. Sure, I understood all the Cortana stuff, but the rest was a bit murky (and I'm a huge Halo fan). Upon subsequent playthroughs, you can find the hidden terminals which unlock videos you can watch online in halo waypoint, a separate (free) app for the xbox. So i have to go out of my way to unlock these backstory videos and then i can't even watch them IN THE GAME, i have to start a separate program to do that? Bullshit. (of course i did it though) The sad part is, it's a great story! It should have been front and center, not an easter egg in the game!! Do they assume we just want to kill aliens and don't bother us with story? Perhaps for the majority it is, but hiding what could be your greatest selling point (especially to casual or non-halo fans, like creepythinmanforever) is not going to attract new fans to the brand! It just cements that idea that halo is a generic boring sci-fi shooter. Sadly, i guess for those who don't have the maniacal drive to seek out all these hidden gems, it probably is just that :(

Always thought Escape From New York would make a great sandbox style game. The only problem is,
by openthepodbaydoorshal
to be fair to the character, Snake wouldn't give a shit about any side missions.
-
1) video game adaptations 2) robots & cyborgs 3) kaiju / anime / Japanese culture 4) space opera (we're kind of into this now, but it might explode once Star Wars Episode IV is upon us) 5) 2nd rate superheroes (Marvel gotta eat!)
-
The other day I was actually trying to imagine what an open-world Grand Theft Auto style They Live game would be like. It would be a sequel to the movie, called They Live Again. You'd play as a new character, choosing either a Roddy Piper dude with a mullet or a bald black guy of course. Then you'd run around the city, eventually getting some shades that allow you to see the hidden world in black & white. The game would be a lot like most sandbox games. You'd go on various missions for the resistance movement, and would eventually penetrate the inner sanctum of the aliens. Or maybe you'd get to go to their homeworld or another world they conquered via that interstellar teleportation device that we saw in the film. Health power ups would be packs of bubblegum. You could also go back to your hideout and watch John Carpenter movies on a shitty little tube TV, or surf the channels and depending on if your character is wearing his shades, see regular TV or the alien transmissions. Then when the game is a rousing success, the developer makes a DLC campaign thingy ala Red Dead Redemption's Undead Nightmare, except for the They Live game it would be a Big Trouble In Little China game.

A great old but lesser known NES game that could make for a crazy big budget 3D IMAX movie... ABADOX
by lv_426
It is about an armored up astronaut/soldier dude who has to rescue the Princess Maria from the giant planet-sized space beast called Parasitis. Now, that may not be some great story or premise, but the idea would be to let a writer go nuts with it and build on it. Nobody cares about the Abadox canon. It would allow us to see something new and maybe unexpected instead of being disappointed with the most likely safe and sanitized Halo or Gears of War PG-13 movie. Of course, there are other old games where this model could work, and I only use Abadox as an example. Seriously, check it out on Youtube though. It is like the NES shooter version of Fantastic Voyage where you have this tiny dude blasting all kinds of gooey alien bits inside a weird organic alien environment. It could make for a pretty cool 3D IMAX sci-fi action epic. I kind of like the notion of taking games with very minimal stories and using that as inspiration for a film. Due to the need for simplicity a lot of older generation games use a very basic story concept just to frame the setting of the game. That might be more freeing to writers and directors than having to try and figure out how the fuck they are going to condense something like Metal Gear Solid, Halo, or Mass Effect into a two hour movie. Looking at Halo is actually the perfect example. The movie stuff they've made from it so far like the anime anthology Halo Legends and the recent Halo: Forward Unto Dawn web-series all work because they are exploring little bits and pieces of the massive Halo canon. Trying to do the Master Chief storyline and all that it entails might start to get a bit messy. The problem is that Halo has been a pretty big media franchise in its own right for the past decade. It has its own extended universe just as Star Wars and Star Trek did. Look where that gets us too. It is still too early to judge SW episode VII, but Star Trek is a good example of a franchise that had a whole massive universe to explore, yet they just reboot with young actors playing the iconic roles of the original Enterprise crew. That is kind of sad in some ways. These massive extended universes really only work up until a movie is made, because the massive egos of Hollywood will never admit that the lowly licensed work of media tie-in authors and comic artists and game developers are worth even looking at, let alone using in the glorious live action big budget summer tent pole reboot or adaptation of the property. I think Hollywood waits too long to make movies out of this stuff. The Halo canon is a lot more massive now than even five years ago when they were initially mulling over a big budget movie with Peter Jackson producing it. Eventually these things get awfully unwieldy and might be more trouble than they are worth. Even Assassin's Creed, which is very cinematic, that is already a series with lots of games and a complex storyline. Hollywood doesn't have too good a time wrapping their heads around that kind of thing. I don't know a lot about Splinter Cell though. Maybe it is not too bogged down in complex canon like most of the big video game franchises.
-
It won't surprise me if because a few kaiju flicks like Pacific Rim and the Godzilla reboot do well at the box office, that Hollywood will suddenly get a massive hard on for Japanese culture. It really does feel like the US is bankrupt in terms of culture and mythology. I guess we have Star Wars as our big mythology, but even that, with the excitement of Episode VII, feels a bit worn out. I think I'm not as thrilled about video game adaptations because I am sick of adaptations in general for film. Movies are so afraid to just tell a story now. It is all so much about familiarity with other media. We need new mythologies and stories that can stand on their own. Avatar proves this, as otherwise it wouldn't have done so well. It was actually something new (maybe not the most original story and concept) where you could go in and just watch it and enjoy it and not feel like it was only as good as the old TV show or video game or book that you loved. You didn't feel as though you were missing out because you didn't read some tie-in comic or novel or watch some prequel web-series. Sure the effects and 3D were a draw, but I don't think they were the only reason people went to see it.
