John Ary With A Trailer For The DIABOLIK TV Series!!
John Ary here with a bit of news that both excites and worries me at the same time.
If you have never watched Mario Bava's brilliant Danger Diabolik, stop what you are doing right now, go to your local library, video store or preferred online retailer and procure a copy of it as soon as possible. A pair of Italian sisters created the anti-hero back in early 60's. This super-thief steals from the rich while utilizing a laundry lists of talents and gadgets comparable to Batman. Bava filled his film with bright colors, large set pieces, James Bond-like action and just enough superhero camp to make Diabolik a fun adventure flick that feels way ahead of its time.

Most people will know Diabolik from that Beastie Boys video.

This movie was the final episode. Duh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh THIS GUY!

..with a 'talkback name' like mine, it's pretty obvious that I'm a fan of the original with Law and Marisa Mell.... .....well......it aesthetically looks quite nice....as you said, bereft of any humour etc.....a shameful rip-off of the Vincent Cassel capoeira / Ocean's 12 scene.... ...and aside from that......I don't know, tbh....
-
...love the film. It's awesome 60's campy spy-chic. But two things hold me back from getting further into it: I'm in America and I don't speak Italian. The DVD of the film is out of print and ridiculously expensive. The animated series isn't available in the states (much like the incredible animated films based on Hugo Pratt's CORTO MALTESE) and, surely, neither will this series (looks more in tune with the original depiction of the character, actually) On top of that, English translations of the comics are hard to come by and expensive even on Amazon. It's a shame. Such a great character.

If Diabolik was any good some American douchebag would have done a version of it by now.

Cool movie, though tedious at times. It's immediately apparent how much the Batman TV series and The Green Hornet ripped off this movie.

Mr. Ary -- are you going to review Dark Horse?
by Bedknobs and Boomsticks
It looks like more closed-minded generalizing.

...that's what I have now, yeah. A burned copy. BUT that doesn't help me with the rest of the media. European comic-adaptations (much like European comics) have taken what is, essentially, an American born artform and raised it a notch. The six animated CORTO MALTESE films are great (I've pieced them together via YouTube), the ASTERIX AND OBELIX films, LUCKY LUKE etc (although the Lucky Luke TV series with Terrance Hill, which you CAN find in English, is terrible).

Mission: Impossible + Entrapment - Humour/Fun = Diabolik 2012
by Swordfleece
Liked the original Nice visuals in remake Still looks interesting and will give it a chance

who was in turn based on a character called Fantômas. Fantomex's alias, Jean-Phillipe, is a reference to actor John Phillip Law, star of Danger: Diabolik. Diabolik had a lover/accomplice called Eva, Fantomex has some sentient vehicle or some shit called E.V.A.

The US will get this series right after the animated series gets here.....Never.

Diabolik is a great character with so much potential, but like Dredd proved, American audiences don't make any effort to watch comic characters NOT created by either Bob Kane, Jack Kirby or Stan Lee. The Diabolik movie is awesome and MUCH better than several of the Bond films (I'm looking at you Diamonds Are Forever, To Die Another Day and A View To A Kill).

My ex was Italian, I still have a bunch of her Diabolik comics
by Lone Fox
Now I just need to date another Italian so they can tell me what the fuck the story's about.

At least in my estimation. Ursula, Barbara Bouchet, Camilla Sparv, Cardinale, Virna Lisi and Ewa Aulin all come in at a distant second. With her blonde wig (see also Perversion Story) or not, Marisa was the very definition of sexiness. She went far too soon, pretty much in poverty and all but forgotten. Still number one in my book.
-
Diabolik was a rip-off of two big litterature success in France: Fantômas and Arsène Lupin... So, it'll alway be the "chicken before the egg" game...
-
Oh, and Diaboik rules.

Posting without glasses...

The font/logo style really doesn't fit with the visual style that they've gone for. Of course, it's a nod to the original, but still, this trailer did nothing for me. Great idea for a TV series though. They should have let someone like Tarantino develop this for TV.

Yeah, looks like a Fantomex trailer! Did not know that he was based on this. Cool. You get one thousand geek points from me.

I really wish Marvel gives Fantomex an ongoing series. Love the guy.

back in the mid 80s, they showed it a lot on Saturday afternoons on KTLA Channel 5 in LA. Usually paired with Godzilla Vs Megalon.

OH AND IF ANY OF YOU LOVE DIABOLIK, YOU SIMPLY MUST SEE ROMAN COPPOLA'S "CQ" (2001) WHICH IS A LOVE LETTER TO MARIO BAVA AND JUST A FUCKING GREAT MOVIE PERIOD!!!FACT!!! HERE'S MY REVIEW......
by CreepyThinManForever
Directed by Roman Coppola (son of Francis, brother of Sofia), CQ in set in late 60’s Paris and tells the story of a slightly pretentious Film Editor (Jeremy Davies) working on a big budget sci-fi movie, about a Barbarellaesque secret agent, while pilfering film and equipment from the production in order to make his own personal work detailing the daily activities of he and his Flight Attendant girlfriend. His big break comes when the original Director (Gerard Depardieu) leaves over Creative Differences and their replacement (Jason Schwartzman, Roman’s cousin) also bugs out, at which point our protagonist is asked to take over as Director at the behest of the films Producer (Giancarlo Giannini). Complications ensue when it appears that our new Director seems to be falling in love with protester-turned lead actress Angela Lindvall, playing secret agent Dragonfly and her alter ego Valentine, as he also tries to find meaning within the cotton candy superficialities of big budget studio moviemaking. I absolutely LOVE this movie as it perfectly evokes the era of which it’s supposed to be representing and is loaded with references to the work of Mario Bava, of whom Roman is an avowed fan. He even managed to cast John Phillip Law who starred in Bava’s classic Danger Diabolik as well as Barbarella. This is probably my second favorite movie about movie making after Ed Wood.

Great soundtrack also.

Although I might put a viewer discretion warning since Diabolik is apparently a master rapist too according to that last shot.

Keep in mind that the dvd that came out has a very different and VERY STUPID new english dub track --
by MooseMalloy
The laserdisc has the old original english dub and is the one to see if you can get a copy of it somehow. Whoever is responsible for the silly new dvd dub should have the mask of satan shoved on their face.

Halle Berry in WB leathers, or Katy Perry as Smurfette Why is everything marketed to yuppie women or dickweeds in Affliction shirts? Do these people really spend that much money?

A comic film devoid of camp and humor would be the Nolan Batman. This might be good.

You are a legend mate !!! I totally darn agree. (Albeit you missed out Edwige Fenech, Claudine Auger and Caroline Munro - in your list). Mell is by FAR the sexiest woman put on film...Perversion Story....Buddah wept....!!! And then - Diary of an Erotic Murderess, Casanova 70, Seven Blood Stained Orchids, plus the Tony Curtis 'Casanova', and Milano Rovente.... YOU ARE A LEGEND. Just cos you are the first person I've encountered who thought the same as me (or vice versa).
