New This Week

Two series from the pre-HD era make the leap to HD Blu-ray releases this week, following in the footsteps of “Star Trek,” “The Twilight Zone” and “The Prisoner.”

Carl Reiner’s brainchild “The Dick Van Dyke Show” is one of the two best sitcoms of the 1960s. The genius of this show was the same strategy utilized much later by “Freaks and Geeks”: its tales were based on actual events. Mary Tyler Moore in her twenties was dreamy.

There are few 1990s sitcoms I loved as much as “Friends”. Jennifer Aniston was the one who deservedly went on to movie stardom, but Lisa Kudrow and Matthew Perry were just as expert at selling the comedy. Very funny show. I am looking forward to seeing young Courtney Cox’s 29-year-old hinder in high definition.
