More STAR WARS Talk From George Lucas And Kathleen Kennedy! Hints Dropped! Names... Not So Much!
Beaks here...
Why do I get the feeling that Kathleen Kennedy is going to announce the director of EPISODE VII very soon? Like "before Thanksgiving" soon? They've got such tremendous momentum going at the moment, why not send us into the holiday excitedly discussing what a new filmmaker could bring to the STAR WARS saga?
For now, though, it's time for more teasing. In the below video from StarWars.com, Kennedy and Lucas give us an idea of what they're looking for in the next director. They also continue to talk about "a couple of writers" developing the story, which suggests Michael Arndt isn't working alone. There is another!
In any event, enjoy parsing the hell out of this video. My money is still on Jon Favreau.

Favreau would be cool. He just needs to get his head in the game.
by JudasPriestly
But it could totally work. But he needs to do his own thing. Don't let Lucas consult the next trilogy into the ground.

They need another Irwin Kershner, who can focus on dialogue and the actors.

Holiday special would kick serious butt. Make it so han cant translate chewy also so everyone is lost. Simply awesome!
by Shangatron
-
Nuff said. Matthew Vaughn would be great too. Favreau made Iron Man 2, so he should not be allowed to make movies again. Or at least not a Star Wars Movie until he has atoned for his sins (with Cowboys vs Aliens he certainly didn't).
-
HAHAHAHAHAHA....i kid kid... i still like brad bird a lot too. can't wait till they announce it....Favreau would be awesome too. a lot of good directors out there could do the universe justice with a strong script. Andrew Stanton could be a cool choice...or get three new directors to co-direct all three films...that would be the shit!

Now since Disney has Star Wars maybe they will release the Holiday special on blue ray! I would pay $40 bucks for it!

The bad thing about it is that boba fett was a good guy at first. If you've seen it.

...were Lucas and Kennedy ever an item?

Watched the making of A New Hope, and it's ridiculous the amount of other (more talented) people that made Star Wars what it is. Lucky fat miserable bastard ripped off Hidden Fortress in the first place. End of the hate. Carry on...

Kathleen Kennedy said "there are many people that sprang to mind that i have worked with in the past"

but she also says she is excited to pass it on to a 'whole new generation' of filmmakers, not many people on that list fit that description besides Maybe M. Night, Peter Jackson and David Fincher. Still very hard call or prediction to make.

Boba Fett wasn't a good guy in the Star Wars Holiday Special
by Cotton_Mcknight
As I recall, he was extremely coy about his intentions. He was helping Luke with something or nother, and I don't really remember what he was up to, but he was NOT a good guy.
-
let other kids play with his toys?? Me thinks his creative control will squeze the soul out of any talented director who comes aboard his Star Wars.

Dear god i hope not! The further the mad king george stays away from the develpment the better. And I personally do not want to see the original actors in the new movies. Mark and Harrison maybe, but not Carrie. Sorry but no. Too fat and too raspy from too much smoking it seems. Just reboot the shit out of this thing please.
-
1) Uwe Boll 2) Paul W.S. Anderson 3) Michael Bay
-
What has he made that's "Great" or visually/experimentally cool enough to warrant his making a Star Wars movie?? He'd be a great choice for a Flash Gordon remake though.

Lucas...go home. Wish Mcquarrie was designing. How bout Gilliam to direct?!
by txtone04
At least Disney will bring in some new folks.
-
There is no need to reboot. There is plenty of material for new original movies. Add new characters or use some from the EU, use Luke and Han sparingly if you need to. My god you have, jedi, sith, bounty hunters, smugglers, rebellions, wars... so much to choose from. no rebooting is needed. Leave the 6 movies alone, for good or bad.

Definitely not someone you want in charge of the whole thing. Especially when you have people like David Fincher, Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, Hayao Miyazaki and Martin Scorsese. I'm hoping for Fincher

Lets face it no matter who directs this it will be attacked.

People are guessing their wet dream picks for director
by TheFifthMarxBeatle
I'm seeing polls where Christopher Nolan is the #2 favorite from people. While he's a good director does anybody honesty think he could pull of the simple (keyword: simple...not STUPID) adventure serial. Or David Fincher...really? They're not going to go batshit insane with this series. They have a core demographic to adhere to still. Its going to be someone who can direct a serial film, like a Harry Potter director or something. They need a fanboy director.

and he's very familiar with the material. He'll probably get his Boba Fett movie.. wonder if they could even get Morrison to play Boba.. that would rock.

WTF do they have to do with Star Wars? Is there a 7 and a 1/2 floor in disrepair on the Death Star? Next we'll be hearing about the ghost of Bob Ross doing some concept art for Episode VII.

by awepittance
The aesthetics and grime of Rango reminded me a lot of A New Hope and Return of the Jedi (jabba's palace). Davey jones was state of the art CGI that still looks pretty impressive. I don't really like any of the Pirates movie, but the 2nd one at least strikes the right tone visually of being a very dark children's movie
-

Still saying JJ Abrams. I'd prefer Cuaron, but...ah, well.
by AlienFanatic
I just don't see Spielberg doing it. Rumor is that treatments are out to Spielberg, Abrams, and Bird, but that seems suspect. Still, all the folks above talking about Fincher make me wonder what a Fincher Star Wars would look like. You know the one name we're not seeing? Cameron. Yes, I know about Avatar II, but I wonder if Jim would consider putting Avatar II on hiatus to try his hand at Star Wars? I mean, can you imagine a better overall choice? He's got the tech down cold, the action down cold, and knows how to make likable characters out of very thin parts. Personally, I'm not at all excited about an Avatar II, but I'd be thrilled to see Iron Jim's take on Lucas's franchise.

It's like them finally making a ghostbusters 3... The internet barely survived the inception of the prequels. How will it survive this continuance of the franchise... and how the hell, now in this high speed digital era, are they going to keep anything a secret... Have a seat and listen kids... I came to the original Aicn back when I was 12 to look up prequel stuff. It was called something else back then...If anyone would be so kind as to tell me what the original name for this site was, I'd much appreciate it. All I remember is that it was a green color palette. Anyway.... I saw Knowels on Access Hollywood when they did a piece on some super duper star wars geek. So I knew who ran the show. This was the best spot to find any leaked stuff on star wars. Dont know if it still is, but Damn do I feel nostalgic after all these years with aicn back in the star wars news game. Would be interesting if Ron Howard was chosen to direct given his history with Lucas. David Fincher if he still wants to do it too. ANYONE but Lucas. Good lord, is this going to be a hell of a ride...

Like Jon Favreau or Abrams. I just can't get excited about a Favreau-helmed Star Wars, unless the treatment that's been penned ends up being really, really good. And I mean REALLY good - not just some uber-calculated nostalgic throwback designed to appeal to forty something OT purists.

Weeeere goood.
-
And yes I am serious. Imagine how beautiful that movie would be.
-
I'd be very happy with either. But if they got Fincher or Alfonso Cuaron, that would be unreal. If Brad Bird gets an interview it's hard to see him not getting the gig. Can imagine the enthusiasm and ideas. His films to date have exactly the sort of humour and character ensemble that proper Star Wars needs. But man, what would a David Fincher Star Wars be like? Bird would be safe and reliable, Fincher - we'd be getting something really worth getting excited about.
-
I don't see a signature there. No movie he's made can I see anything that truly marks him out as somebody who could bring anything new to the table. He'd make a decent movie for sure. But they've the opportunity to get somebody much better.
-
If we hadn't have got Last Airbender, or The Happening...to a lesser extent Lady in the Water....then we'd all be yelling for Shyamalan. If we got the Night that made Sixth Sense, Signs and the masterpiece that is Unbreakable - well.

by awepittance
in a way Lady in the Water is an Unbreakable like take on a children's fairy tale and i think it for the most part works. It may not be one of his stronger films but it's far superior to his last 2 films. Unbreakable is still to this day my favorite super hero film.
-
So Kennedy's apparent reluctance to say anything out of turn infront of George could have been deliberate. Now he's signed it all over they can do what they like. I don't want to bash George though. I think he definitely should be involved to some degree. Collaborations worked with Empire and Jedi perfectly so no reason to think they won't work this time. Lucas is Star Wars. He just needs to someone to make him remember. Like Banning in Hook. That didn't turn out so good though....

Gore Verbinski knows how to handle million dollar adventure franchises. My bet is on him. Bird is good, but not enough experience. Now Fincher, that would be some crazy shit. The guy´s style is too dark though. Maybe for a darker Episode 8 sequel.
-
I haven't even seen that movie. Was it really as bad as everyone said? The Happening, clearly he was trying to make a picture in the style of a B movie. From the acting to the look and editing of it. It just didn't work though. I got what he was trying to do, but it felt off and smug. Just a huge misfire. The rise and fall of M Night Shyamalan is practically legend akin to the story of Anakin, and Star Wars itself. Maybe this is fate.
-
Just the way Stephen King wrote himself as a character into the Dark Tower series. It would be so meta.
-
I the immortal words of Rick Perry : "Ooops!"
-
this franchise without William's iconic music. So Williams is not essential for the success of the new movie. What you need is a good story and a good director. all the rest are mere details.
-
Was that he wasn't an action/sci-fi director, he was a people director. His previous film was Eyes of Laura Mars for chrissakes. That was what made Empire so great. There was heart behind the action and special effects. It might be the smart thing to go that direction instead of the action/fantasy director of the moment. That's why I sorta like Brad Bird the most. The Incredibles had great heart. I'd be open to others who might not fit the expected mold.

He hardly said anything, yet Kennedy - a very smart and independently thinking person - looked on tenterhooks the whole time in case she said anything that might annoy him. And that was "sociable, chummy" Lucas. Now imagine WORK Lucas in creative meetings. Holy shit. Writers - ANY writer - will crumble. The thing about the score/composer is that they'll still use the classic Star Wars cues and themes...
by Jaka
...so it doesn't really matter who it is, so long as it's not somebody completely wrong and off the wall. Not using the classic Star Wars cues and themes would make it something other than Star Wars, so that ain't gonna happen.

The Hughes Brothers. Denzel as new Sith/renegade Jedi antagonist. Luke's head rolls in part VII. Gungan genocide. Leia attempts to seduce Lando but is rejected because of Lando's loyalty to Han.

I know, never happen. But I can dream.
-
His brand of camera movement, especially in movies like Darkman and Spiderman 2, would look great on a Star Wars film. He'd probably only give a shit enough to do a good job if OZ fails though. If it's as great as Drag Me to Hell, it just might.

George Lucas is awesome, btw. I just wish he had sold the rights after Return of the Jedi.
by ThulsaBoom
We'll always have Empire. Maybe they'll be something else worthwhile yet to come, but if they can't get it together at least George Lucas got the ball rolling so we could all experience Empire and feel what a flawless Star Wars film can do to the human condition.
-
Great idea. He can get emotion and character out of an actor.
-
I think if VII is going to be introducing a bunch of new character then Branagh would be a good choice.
-
I think I just threw up again. Don't need Helena and Depp in my Star Wars.

Love how you guys throw out suggestions that are not only realistic, but go so dead-against proposed personalities...
by Glenn
Meaning, for instance, you're postulating impossibles... Ok, Fincher. You know his personality. You know his films. You know how he feels about Jedi way back when he worked on it. Do you honestly think he'd want to work with George Lucas? He's his own man now. Nolan. Again, his own man, doesn't want to be hemmed in and controlled. Cuaron. The best candidate, but needs a lot of room. Branagh. I didn't see Thor. His Henry V was pretty good. DOn't know his work that well but it seems classical and he's a great actor himself. Favreau. Serviceable at best. He's not the strong director of actors everyone thinks he is. So far he's dealt with a lot of prima donnas and frankly, hasn't fared well. Vince Vaughn-mouth. Robert Downey Jr-mouth. Harrison Ford-crank. And the scripts have been boring. Verbinski. Doubt he'd wanna get into another trilogy. He's older and proven and rich and onto doing his own thing now. Shyamalan. His directing style is completely antithetical to this series. Let's face it, George will not supply "room." And the director will be getting fucked from every direction. Not only is it George; now you're dealing with Disney, and its horrible executive decision-making. It's gonna be someone talented but young and hungry who shows versatility with actors and story. I'd love to see a Duncan Jones or Rian Johnson or Blomkamp deal -- but something tells me they're TOO auteurist for control freak Lucas. Someone said get today's version of Sydney Pollack. I get that and totally support it...but Pollack was never into sci-fi, said so, didn't interest him whatsoever, only liked love stories on earth. But who would be today's equivalent? Sam Mendes definitely is that. But I'm not sure he's into action as much as necessary (and I speak as a fan of Skyfall) -- and I think he's a little too mature for Star Wars. I agree. Find the modern Kirshener, someone who's never broken out big, who is strong with performance (I have to admit -- what i've seen of his prior work, wasn't all that revelatory, it's still amazing what he did with that whole Empire thing). Or the modern Donner. So who's around and would be willing? Weir? No way. He hates this kind of situation. He doesn't even like the hollywood screenplay format, for chrissakes. Cameron? Um, Avatar's his invention. Billions of dollars. Be serious, guys. Best bets: the pixar graduates. They've been in this fantasy realm for decades now. They're solid storytellers. Personal choice? I'd love to see some toughness brought to the whole thing: Joe Carnahan. Tony Gilroy. And let them co-write the script.

Chris Cunningham directing a STAR WARS? Aphex Twin composing the score then, with a new character named Rubber Jedi.
by lv_426
-
It's pretty obvious from the videos that Lucas has "final approval" on everything even if he isn't going to direct or write the screenplay. He can totally veto everything, which means he can still step in and ruin it.
-
His Pirates films are the closest we've got to a modern Star Wars type trilogy. He's in good with Disney, finishing up the lone ranger. People like Spielberg, Fincher, Tarintino would all be terrible choices. A Fincher of Tarintino star wars film would be good. Doing the new trilogy... no way. The Berg.. no.
-
That's a good and realistic suggestion.

My 3 directors for 7-9 (who will never do it, but what the hell)
by Lucky13
EP VII -- Ridley Scott. Sets up the epic vistas and brooding atmosphere nicely. Sets the series up with quality acting, visuals, and maturity. EP VIII -- David Fincher. Takes Scott's atmosphere and runs with it, diving deeper and darker for the grittiest film of the series. EP IX -- Jim Cameron The heroes bounce back from previous defeats for an epic, exciting, hair-raising (haha) adventure to close out the trilogy. Yeah, I know --- never gonna happen.. but a fanboy can dream.

Am I the only one who thinks, apart from the first film, that all the Pirates films are messy bloated and overcooked?
by Hardboiled Wonderland
Disney orders dinner, and Verbinski delivers a 20 course banquet of food no one is ever going to eat, not even George. Verbinski? No way.
-
No you're not the only one. The first Pirates is really great and was a huge surprise when it came out. The next two were so bloated and convoluted (I nearly walked out of Dean Man's Chest). Despite all of their attempts to make a "trilogy" their clearly was no vision there. I actually kind of liked the 4th one as they simplified the plot and just went for making a goofy pirate flick but it was still pretty inconsequential.
-
With Spielberg a no now I think Weir would be good for episode VIII. They need to follow the same pattern as ANH and TPM which is to setup the characters and initial conflicts but mostly just tell a fun adventure tale that for the most part works as a self-contained story. Episode VII shouldn't be too heavy or dramatic. You want to save that for episode VIII. I want a director who can do fun without stupid and still give it a little heft so that's why I'd go with Favreau, Johnston or Zemeckis.

If Jon Favreau gets to direct I think that will be the final stake in the heart for Starwars.
by ganymede3010
One thing he has proven is that he can't direct action for shit. Compare the Iron Man action in 1 & 2 to the Avengers. It's not even fucking close. Wheddon finally showed us how Iron Man should be depicted on screen (when it comes to action). If Favreau directs this one thing is for sure, boring and crappy lightsaber duels that would end as quickly as his Iron Man duels. Another one of Favreau's weaknesses is the third acts of this movies are always the worst parts. When it comes to Starwars, that can't happen, especially when saber duels and large scale space battles are involved. The worst part about these last couple days is it's apparent that Disney has already made their choice, they're just not telling us. That's why everyone is so quick to turn it down (because they know there's a director already attached) I mean what director in the right mind would so nonchalantly turn down the prospect of directing the most influential franchise ever? Think about it. They already know who it is, or at worst the 2 they've narrowed it down to.
-
search your feelings you know it to be true!
-
The man has proven he can do pulp (Rocketeer, Captain America...). I think he'd be a GREAT fit for the next Star Wars in giving it the closest feeling of 'A New Hope'. Also Neil Blomkampt deserves a high profile flick like this, and the visuals would be AMAZING. Shit, have them co direct the damned thing and we could have the best Star Wars movie ever...

by Bradly Durant
"Oh my God I think we should get you to a hospital or something Mr George." "Oh no that's okay just come closer boy." "What do you mean?" "I SAID COME HERE YOU LITTLE SHIT. NOW OPEN YOUR FUCKING MOUTH." The size of Lucas is too much for the youngling and he is pushed to the floor without a struggle. The full horror that is George Lucas is now apparent to the unfortunate employee as the mad old king forces the bulbous sack into the mouth of the boy. "THAT'S RIGHT, FEED, FEED, FEED...."
-
Kennedy has practically exclusively worked with Spielberg, Zemeckis, Jackson, Fincher and Eastwood looking at her IMDB. Obviously none of those guys will direct. M Night and Joe are the only ones left with massive SFX/tentpole experience.

Inspired choice. Except he's totally locked into Finding Nemo 2, which has a 2016 release date.
-
In '97 George was saying that he would direct the first Prequel to set things up, but he probably wouldn't be directing the following two episodes. My dream line-up then was: EPISODE I would be directed by George Lucas EPISODE II would be directed by Steven Spielberg EPISODE III would be directed by James Cameron I always loved the idea of him using his unique status as the only independent filmmaker in the history of cinema with virtually no spending limit, and spending a billion dollars on the Prequel Trilogy. Spare no expense and have all the best and brightest in the industry help create something profound. Make something so earth shattering that we would never see the likes of it again. Unfortunately we got what we got with THE PHANTOM MENACE. And after the backlash George just phoned it in for the next two, threw up a bunch of green screens in studios, used television cameras, television crews, and made two films even worse than THE PHANTOM MENACE.

Lynch was seriously considered. But Lynch seriously didn't want to do someone else's already-begun story. It's why he chose Dune instead. He's talked about this in interviews. Wanna hear something funny? His kid was really into the original trilogy when they got rereleased in '97 and it bugged him a little.
-
Wholly agree you should get the best storyteller for the job, who also "needs" to do a movie like this. To this day, I dunno how Kirshner was chosen other than Lucas knew him as a teacher first, 'cause his filmography up to that point did not exhibit the visual lustre that Empire did. I'm guessing Suschitzky had a big hand in the compositions? Lord (sith) knows the man's lighting is up there with Blade Runner levels of genius. I want all of you to come up with three directors who (a) are not already mentioned in the TB, and (b) haven't done sci-fi previously, and (c) are strong with character and performance. Go. One guy I would trust, after seeing his Prime Suspect, and John Adams, let alone King's Speech, is Tom Hooper. I'd give anything to see McTiernan do one. Especially a lightsaber battle. And I said this already, but Joe Carnahan could bring some toughness to it.
-
The dramatic elements displayed throughout "District 9" married with the visuals would make him a strong candidate for sure. Hell i'd even consider old Kenneth Branagh - he certainly has the credentials for something like this, especially after "Thor".

Here is a director that popped into my head today that I think would be a very interesting choice: Joe Wright I'm basing this on ATONEMENT and HANNA He has some striking visuals and color palettes for his dramas. I can only guess how he would approach the STAR WARS universe.

Do we need a chimera director? Or do we need to settle down a bit?
by Darth Macchio
I mean seriously, this isn't the entirety of human history put to film and, as such, should have such a convoluted process for getting a "perfect" creative crew. Not to mention, I'd wager most of the valid directors would balk at the chance. They're already valid so they don't need the work or the money. That coupled with the mount everest of baggage that goes along with directing one of these movies will keep all but the truly masochistic away from it. I kinda love how Tarantino answered the question even if it's a bit cynical. But outside of some chimera-like combination of directorial elements, there simply is no answer that will make even half of us happy (not that we really do matter all that much given little kids will flock to it no matter what but our 'geek' ticket $ is a factor either way). I hope they dismiss us to an extent but not discount our views and simply get the best talent they can afford without rushing it. without rushing it...let me repeat that...without rushing it!!! (now, queue reality: "let's rush this out for a 2013 xmas/2014 summer showing now now now!!!!! go go go go!!!") What will likely happen is they'll get the best talent they can afford in the hyper-smushed asamp (as soon as mindlessly possible) time frame they want to get this out in...which means we will very likely get someone like Rattner.
-
Excellent choice. Wright knows his drama and possesses filmmaking audacity and skill... I know most of the geeks here would poo-poo this choice based on his one excursion into genre filmmaking, but Ang Lee is kind of a hero of mine. But I don't see him bothering to engage someone else's vision wholeheartedly. I know Paul Haggis has wanted to direct Bond; based on Next Three Days alone, I'd let him do a Star Wars. I much prefer someone who demonstrates strength of script and writing than someone who's purely visual (like that idiot John Moore).
-
Totally agree with you 100%. I do find everyone's musings/suggestions almost laughable, even when they label it with a "i know it's just a dream" preface...

Fincher would make the most sense and would give me a small glimmer of hope.
by SunTzu77
Fincher might dare to venture there - he did work on ROTJ as a youngin'. He and Lucas might have a relationship. I can definitely see him delivering a Kershner vibe. Kathy Kennedy did get him involved with GWTDT. http://blog.moviefone.com/2011/12/19/david-fincher-girl-with-the-dragon-tattoo-return-of-the-jedi-interview/ Whoever it is - it needs to be a strong strong director that can pull some solid performances out. Someone like Branagh could be intriguing. When he was chosen for "Thor" I immediately understood why they went there. I would stay far away from "The Thrawn Trilogy." Star Wars doesn't have to be Luke, Han, etc. It's such a large and rich universe. I would delve into a totally different storyline.
-
Or the Director of "The Artist"? It has to maintain some of the silent film reel feeling!
-
After seeing Argo I can't get this idea out of my head...Maybe not episode 7 but perhaps the Empireish episode 8?
-
The dude revived the Bond franchise - TWICE! And he's got a very TESB visual style.
-
Im not joking. But really, my money is on Joe Johnston. He is a good director and, hey, he worked on the original film. Did great design work.
