Schwarzenegger Has To Fight In The New Trailer For THE LAST STAND!!
The Kidd here...
I don't really count THE EXPENDABLES flicks in marking the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger to the big screen (for that matter, I might as well give some credit to THE RUNDOWN, too, no?), but I've looking forward to checking out THE LAST STAND in January, because it means Arnold is really back. Yeah, I just went there.
Lionsgate has put out their final trailer for the film - which finally gives Johnny Knoxville's role some context - and I'd be lying if I said this picture didn't look like a whole helluva lot of fun.
This is the type of action pic an aging Schwarzenegger should be making, and it's the simplicity of it that helps sell this thing. A sheriff who refuses to let some dangerous drug cartel kingpin roll through his town on his way across the border. It's Schwarzenegger and his sidekicks versus some very bad people. What more do you need?

Looked pretty decent. Not really impressive but Arnie could have done a lot worst. Just bring on King Conan.
-
Looks surprisingly entertaining. I'll have to check it out.
-
You need a cynical background side kick to appropriately chime in about how its "fight I do not believe we can win". And then of course, Arnie wins it.

Look at what a film like "Cop Land" did for the critical establishment's opinion for Stallone. Now I doubt this film will be "Cop Land" but it seems a good movie for Ah-nuld.

or maybe a Real Total Recall 2? Maybe PRedator 3?

And while I have revisited "Rocky" in some time, "Cop Land" is easily my favourite Stallone movie.

-
Does Ahnold have something to do with that great Rock flick?
-
Really? Still, looks good.... Just sayin'
-
the guvinator. the rock was being lined as arnie's heir. never happened and there is one scene where arnie and the rock walk past one another. on screen. it was seen as torch passing type of thing. Rock's career never really got off the ground.
-
no arnie.
-
Looks better than the first trailer, but it still looks like a bunch of contrived crap.
-

has a "Rundown" vibe to it. you could easily interchange Arnold for the Rock here.

Yes, that is the atlantean sword from Conan, nice gag. The last stand looks more promising than anything he did post Eraser.
-
But its Arnold so I am sold. DO IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!

I'm sure I read all about this already, in far more informative detail, on Collider. That and the Machete Kills news. I just wish this place was like the old days. All the good contributors have gone or are sporadic at best. There's no exclusives to speak of, what happened to stuff like the Sly talkback? All we get now are comps for Harry's unwanted 'pwesents', cut 'n' paste jobs from other, better websites and reviews of obscure films which frankly shouldn't exist even in someone's mind. Yes there are good bits, I'm not trashing the whole site but it's like seeing a good friend die slowly. And the Rundown was a pre-political career cameo so that doesn't even figure in this discussion.

Looks Bad and Im a Schwarzenegger Fan.... Arnold Needs to Really Limit His Dialogue.... He Cant Act
by ass clown
I love 80's Schwarzenegger and this gives me no nostalgia or fuzzy feelings to relive those prior films. With an aging Schwarzenegger, the man needs to be limited to hitman or terminator type roles where he spouts one-liners only and says fewer than 100 words in the entire film.
-
Nov. 8, 2012, 10:12 a.m. CST
No you couldn't exchange any other action hero in this role...
by sonnyfern
Because there is only ONE Arnold and nobody can do it like him. Others might try the one liners, they might try to shoot a gun like he does, but there's something about Arnold that makes him such a success when he does this kind of stuff. It's why The Rock and Vin Diesals stuff SUCKS when you compare it to Arnolds movies. Look at Commando...and look at any other low rent action movies from the last 10 years.
-
Is like a black hole for the credibility of any film. He's not charming, he's not funny, he's fucking stupid. I like Jackass as much as anyone, but he really does pull down any film he's in. Even ones like this that aren't meant to be taken seriously.
-
If the producers thought it had a snowball's chance, they'd have pushed it to March or even April, the month they release almost-summer-worthy flicks. January is the movie graveyard. Schwarzenegger will return, I'm sure, but this film won't be his big homecoming. It'll do maybe $9-12M its opening weekend and top out at--at most--$15-20M. Just not the kind of movie that does a huge opening or that will have long legs at the B/O. (Hell, I'm thinking a much smaller opening, but I'm giving Arnold credit for pulling in some lookie-loos.)
-
express what i really feel about this trailer. I'll just hope for the best and pray that this career reboot isn't stillborn. Seems to me he needs a BIG project to get him started again, something with his old pal Cameron or maybe even Tarantino. This seems a bite....rote. But hey, i'll watch it, for old times sake.

I would, however, kill to see Arnold team up with a director that knows how to use him.
by AlienFanatic
Cameron, Verhoeven, or McTiernan all know how to get a performance out of Arnold. Just about everyone else ends up with wooden, almost comically bad, work. They must do loads of takes until they get a natural take from Arnold. I just can't find any other explanation for why he's great in Total Recall and True Lies and godawful in Jingle All the Way.

After all, he's got two families to support now.

I LOVE love Arnold. That trailer looks like crap. Arnold has a very specific style and substance to him, he needs to give himself over completely to a Director who understands this.
by JediRob
He can do amazing things, he just needs to try. This looks like he's asleep.
-
I get the need for a blatantly tongue-in-cheek trailer, I do--but I preferred the somewhat more serious (but still kind of cheeky) first trailer. That said I'm still there for Arnie, Forest Whitaker, and the machinegun-wielding school bus--the rest can go stand in front OF said bus.
-
I'm surprised no one here mentioned that this is his Jee-woon Kim's English-language directorial debut. You know: The Good, The Bad, The Weird; A Tale of Two Sisters; I Saw the Devil. All movies that were pumped up like crazy on this very site. This is a dude who knows how to spin a wild yarn. He's successful working in different tones and has an amazing visual flair. However, I'm always skeptical of these kinds of transition. Think Takeshi Kitano's Brother, a movie that could have been great if not for underwhelming performances by American actors. Expect something less generic than you're thinking with hyper-kinetic gunplay, but also expect less than stellar acting due to possible miscommunication (though who knows, maybe he has a perfect command of the English language). Just saying this film has more geek cred than simply being Arnie's return.

He was in The Rundown for about five seconds and had a single line that consisted of two words...
by Stegman84
Hardly comparable to his supporting role in the latest Expendables film, or even his tiny cameo in the first one. Not to mention the simple fact that if it marked anything at all, The Rundown marked Schwarzenegger leaving the big screen, not on his way back to it, with just a small supporting role in Around the World in 80 Days, then nothing else for six years or so, until his first Expendables cameo. So your answer to your Rundown 'credit' question is in fact no. Full stop, no question mark.

TOTAL SHIT - Austrian accented cop in a small southwestern town uses the "nazi killer" machine gun to stop mexican drug traffickers from crossing the border....someone actually thought this is a good idea?
by HoLottaMo
Johnny Knoxville is a complete ZERO - total waste of space and makes Tom Arnold look like Marlon Brando by comparison. For chrissakes they should have used a fucking orangutan instead of knoxville. Arnie looks too old, the story is fucking beyond stupid and Arnie should take a page from Clint Eastwood's book and do some fucking age appropriate flicks.

by Ecto-1
he'll do another cos he needs the money. Just as he'll probably go back to Conan. No passion for the character, just a passion for a pay-cheque. Shit, he was totally a bad choice for Conan to begin with anyway. Nothing like the character in the books. Millius was so far off the mark it was unreal.
-
...has never made a bad film, so I will choose to believe he never will until I see a bad film from him.

It's Schwarzenegger...so I will be there on day one.
-
So intimidating in T1. It will probably never happen, though.
-
Kim Ji-woon. Reason enough to see it. It also gives insight into what Knoxville is doing, reminds me of the "humorous" characters in asian film.
-
Kim Ji-woon is enough reason to check this out, even w/o Arnie. I'm sure it'll have some Korean insanity in it. I can already see hints of his style (the night/spotlight shots are pretty typical). Here's hoping for a revolving stabby cam!
-
This isnt a huge summer blockbuster nor was it intended to be. I think it cost about 30mill, it will cover that domestically, easy. Yeah Arnies acting is still wooden but this looks like it could be a lot of fun.
-
doesn't work for me how absurd that you can't catch someone in a car going in one direction and have to rely on a really bad acting pensioner bring on the Conan!
-
Nov. 8, 2012, 1:20 p.m. CST
FUCK YOU HATERS WHO SAY ARNOLD CAN'T ACT! He's been acting for over 30 years. He's limited, but he can play a tough guy and he can play funny and that's a fact.
by Ray_Tango
-
If we can't have a Republican in the white house, we can have them shooting evil bastards in the movie theaters.
-
Apart from the annoying Knoxville, this looks like some very good old-fashioned fun. Will take some suspension of disbelief, even by the standards of this type of film - the bad guy gets busted out by a helicopter with a giant magnet, but the roadblock to stop him is just a few cop cars parked single-file across the road? A sports car that has to follow the road is the most effective way to get him out of the country? - but that's how it goes. Now just tell us that they're going to have Milius direct Arnie's next Conan film, please.
-
Nov. 8, 2012, 2:08 p.m. CST
@twogunjames - based on the current state of the Republican party, I'd say that's the safest arrangement for all of us.
by kevred
Hopefully this election will bring back the endangered species known as 'the moderate Republican'. I miss them, honestly. I'd vote for Arnold before I would Romney. Arnold's acting is more convincing.
-
That's some real chemistry right there. Anyway, looks fun in an awkward yeah-I-know-it's-cheese-but-it's-ARNOLD sort of way.
-
You're using logic to analyze this type of male fun film? Really? Over the top is what Arnie does best! Geez!
-
And this also has Peter Stormare in it too! I would have seen this anyways, as I like the premise of Arnold in a modern day action/western, but now it sounds even better.
-
really retarded.
-
This is a small scale action film, not a gigantic blockbuster. The premise is straight forward and linear. This is the type of action film that could work well, and be really tense (with a few laughs to defuse things every once in a while), if it's tightly directed and edited. I don't expect any of Arnold's next three films to be massive hits, but I think they'll all be solidly received. He's starting small and building himself back up, so that he can then go on to do the mega projects like Legend of Conan, T5, Wings as Eagles, etc. once he's re-established himself. Sounds like a smart way to approach things, since he knows he can't compete directly with Iron Man 3 or something of that scale yet, at this stage.

To those who don't like Raw Deal, I can see how this trailer might look 'terrible' to you. Also, I don't like you, and we're not friends anymore...
by ThulsaBoom
...this looks SO much better than the Expendables and other recent, comparable action attempts. It's clearly not a progression of Arnold's best work, but it looks better than everything he's done since True Lies, although I do give T3 a pass. Luis Guzman, Peter Stormare, and Forrest Whitaker in supporting roles? Arnold raiding a gun museum to throw-down against a ruthless cartel at the border? How a REAL Arnold fan could not be excited about this, especially after the long wait, is beyond me. The Tomb, Ten, and of course The Legend of Conan may all be better than this in the end but this looks perfectly suitable for a re-entry.

Now, you might not enjoy what he's done, and he might not be an Arnold level superstar, but his career is most definitely healthy and only growing. He's pretty much the lead in GI Joe 2. His role in Fast Five was pretty damned entertaining and now he's filming Fast 6 and 7. He just completed filming a movie with Michael Bay and Mark Whalberg. He has another movie in the can as we speak as well. He was excellent in Driven. Is he the second coming of Arnold? Not exactly, but he's probably the more talented actor of the two and definitely has a wider range of roles he's suited to. The Disney thing was a bit of a misstep but it made him tons and it's not as if Arnold never went the family movie route. As a matter of fact Gridiron Gang was pretty damned good too. Sure there was Doom... And the Tooth Fairy, but to say his career hasn't gotten off the ground is absurd. He's only going up from here, which I'm fine with, because he's got the right kind of fucking screen presence for it, he's entertaining.
-
And it wasn't Fast Five. His last 2 films nearly cleared $1 bil in reciepts. The dude is a global superstar when it comes to the movies and anybody who says differently is an absolute moron. Also.. Ajt.. don't forget he was also in Get Smart. He's not exactly a master thespian, but he can certainly bring the funny(his SNL's are some of the funniest of the past 5 years), his screen presence is insane, and as a former wrestler he's usually of the attitude of being up for anything.
-
Damn nice to see the Austrian Oak back on the big screen, and in a vehicle that suits him at this stage in his life/career. Love this type of movie. Bring on King Conan!
-
But it still looks fun.
-
Yes, kgrimes, that shot was amazing and vicious as hell. Maybe Kim's debut will be like John Woo and mullet JCVD's "Hard Taget," utterly ridiculous but also a fun R-rated action movie.
