What's Going On With That Planned TOP GUN Sequel?!
The Kidd here...
With the untimely death of director Tony Scott, it shouldn't come as any surprise that things went silent pretty quickly on any further plans for the proposed TOP GUN sequel that Scott was developing at the time with Tom Cruise ready to reprise his role as Maverick. However, it's been a few months since Scott's passing, and still TOP GUN talk has remained off the radar as far as the future of the project is concerned. That is until now with The New York Times reporting that TOP GUN 2 is in collapse right now with Cruise and Bruckheimer essentially letting this idea dissolve now that Scott is gone.
But furthermore, Paramount Pictures has no idea what to do with a planned 3-D re-release of TOP GUN that they had planned to launch in theatres as a way to test the public's appetite for the follow-up. Paramount is worried that the re-release might be perceived as a cash grab in the wake of Scott's death, but, on the other hand, they've got this movie ready to go, just sitting on the shelf... waiting.
There has been talk of a short special engagement re-release, much like the studio did with RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK not too long ago, as there still remains an audience for TOP GUN, who may come out just for the chance to see the film on the big screen either again or for the first time. But suffice to say, even if it does well, it doesn't look like there will be any forward progress on TOP GUN 2 now or probably ever.

Or that dumb fireman guy from Roxanne? I don't get it. Outside of some stunning aerial photography, this movie wasn't all that great. Scott has far more compelling and less self-aware work to select from so why this goofy film? Seems like certain people feel this movie is way greater and more "hip" than it actually was or is currently. However, if we get a sequel to Top Gun, can we also get a sequel to Six Pack? Dying to find out what happened to Kenny Rogers in that one. Or maybe a sequel to DC Cab? Come to think of it, what has been going with the kids in "Dangerous Minds"? Sequels galore people! Make it so!

Who gives a fuck if the original director died. Hell, when you actually watch Top Gun, it's so badly made anyway (mountains in the middle of the ocean anyone), just find someone new who can make the same kind of film. What a load of shit. Not happy...

The Studios release the conversion, under the idea that all proceeds after the cost of conversion and release go to a donation to a suicide awareness charity, then turn around and profit on whatever backend BluRay release and VOD you get. Maybe I am oversimplifying it, but and action like this would clearly be in the best interest of all parties involved.

and also because girls all wanna see gay men volleyballing each other and biting their lips in sillhouette and guys wanna see dogfight movies that they can take their GFs to and then get sex after. This is why John Carpenter turned it down. There's no movie there. There is no Top Gun without Tony.
-
Scott was pretty limited in what he could use for the aerial scenes, there's actually not a lot to this flick that would benefit from 3D.

A leaked screenplay has been released... Maverick is now a Scientologist who is divorced from his hot wife after her father helps her escape from his cult. Suicide is painless? Fuck that! Tony Scott, you were a pussy! Sorry, but it's true!
by Zardoz
Fuck suicide! Man, if there's anyone that should have wanted to live, it should've been Tony, "I feel the need, the need for speed", Fucking Scott! (Capital "F" in Fucking not a typo, btw. It WAS his middle name!) Macho, action-movie director, making millions, working with major movie stars, traveling all over the world... in short, doing what any movie geek in the whole fucking world would absolutely LOVE to be doing, and he kills himself? FUCK YOU! Sorry, but I'm pissed. I love Tony Scott's films. I thought he was bloody brilliant! Gifted and talented. And he just throws it all away. Man, what a waste! And just knowing that he and Tom Cruise were working on a Top Gun sequel? Man, I would've given both of my testicles to see that movie. (I'm not really using them much right now, anyway, actually!) I have the utmost respect for Tony Scott, and I'm deeply sorry for his death and for the pain it caused his family and friends. But man, what a fucking pussy...

a modern day retelling of Pearl Harbour (Cruise in the Ben Affleck role as Maverick, Kilmer in the Josh Hartnett role as Iceman and McGillis in the Kate Beckinsale type role as Charlie)...
by CARTMANEZ
a modern day retelling of Pearl Harbour (Cruise in the Ben Affleck role as Maverick, Kilmer in the Josh Hartnett role as Iceman and McGillis in the Kate Beckinsale type role as Charlie)... Mav and Ice are in are still playing the occasional volley match on the beach, teaching the youngsters etc but back on the scene is Charlie looking to rekindle the romance with Maverick. lots of emotional anguish as Mav wrestles with his feelings trying to decide between his buddy Ice and his one true love Charlie - Faltermeyer montages, bit of Berlin as well, Mav riding into the sunset on retro Kawasaki looking at planes deep in thought etc, the works.... then there is a Pearl Harbour 9/11 type attack on the US, Mav and Ice put their shit to one side and are back in the air - dog fights, shit hitting the fan, they kill all the baddies, save the day but then Ice goes rogue and flies to Charlies house to sidewinder it and Mav is torn between his buddy love for Ice and his love for Charlie - will he take down Ice before he blows Charlie up or does he let him do it and chalk it up as collateral from the attack? this would be the big climax at the end after they save the day(im imagining him on the radio to Ice shouting ‘you don’t have to do this…I Love you!’ like in War of the Worlds when hes trying to talk his son out of fighting on the hill) starring Cruise, Kilmer, McGillis, Meg Ryan with Tim Robbins, Michael Ironside and Anthony Edwards (Goose dream cameo telling Mav what he should do)

.....for the first time since I was 9 years old. I remember thinking it was an awful film when I was 9. But seeing it again after 21 years made me realize it isn't awful, it's one of the worst films ever made! But in the vein of Troll2 and the Room a highly enjoyable one! There is simply not one even halfway decent scene in the film and it's blatantly homo erotic. Highly recommended to watch with some friends with a lot of alcohol!!

I think in our current cultural/political climate, you need a new franchise to do a Top Gun kind of story, and mechs instead of jets
by lv_426
I think a Top Gun type concept but set in the middle of this century with mech pilots would be the way to go. Think about it... The year is 2053. The superpowers of the world are scrambling to gather natural resources. Oil has become more scarce. Wars over these resources have broken out across the globe. A new type of war... One where ground force supremacy has taken precedence. The battle mech is now the primary tool for defensive and offensive engagements. So basically you have a bunch of hot shot young mech pilots going through training to pilot high tech war mechs. Basically the Top Gun story but repurposed for a new setting. It could easily be PG-13, with plenty of toy and video game merchandising opportunities. And it wouldn't have to just show the future of warfare via mechs. There could be other cool stuff like futuristic fighter jets, maybe scramjets. There would be the element of cyberwarfare, which is an element of current day military strategy. By the 2040's or 2050's we'll have more drone warfare, probably more ground force drones whereas nowadays lots of the drone tech is for aerial warfare. Basically what I'm saying is we'll have something along the lines of our very own Cylon Centurions. Now when I say mechs, I'm thinking in more realistic terms. Not the behemoths that we will probably be seeing in Pacific Rim. I'm thinking of something like the mechs in say the game Armored Core. Maybe not that big, but along those lines. Of course BattleTech and MechWarrior are also more along what I'm thinking, but again not so damn big. Basically I'm thinking of mechs that are more in spirit with the AMP mechs in Avatar than some of the more aesthetically beautiful mechs in a lot of anime. Not magical mechs, or transforming jet mechs, as cool as that stuff is in other stories. Mechs, if we build them for military purposes in the near future, won't be as stylized as what we normally see in film and fiction. I think that would be interesting to see on film in a gritty future war setting. Yes it would be a new franchise, which is risky. On the other hand, it is more high concept than just trying to hook people through nostalgia via the Top Gun name and Tom Cruise, who if drops out of the project, you got squat, which the article attached to this talkback basically states. No Cruise equals no Top Gun.
-
Nov. 8, 2012, 9:38 a.m. CST
lv, as much as I would totally go see anything with mechs... who thinks the reason Top Gun was good was the story?
by Stephen
what story? oh the one where they just train all the time. that story? maybe we could lower the stakes even more by making them remote controlled mechs. if you're gonna make a mech movie make a mech movie, not a yu gi oh movie with no consequences

booger_t -- maybe less time on training, more time on ass-kicking machage!
by lv_426
I was thinking Top Gun story as just a rough idea of how to structure a film about near future mech warfare. Oh and I'm not thinking drone mechs controlled by people in cushy cubicles. It would definitely have human pilots in the mechs, so there would be consequences. I was using drones in my desciption more along the lines of how warfare will definitely rely on drones more and more, but will never be the only type of fighting unit. I think the human element will be a factor in warfare, even in the future.

Whoa..didn't realize it was contractual for Kilmer...the wouldabeens...and suicide...
by Darth Macchio
Kilmer was contracted for TG? And another poster mentioned that it was offered to John Carpenter? You know...someone should write a book of the Hollywood "couldabeens". Such as Tom Sellick almost getting Han Solo (or the notion that "Han Solo" was actually not even a human being up until the very last rewrites). We all know about Wil Smith and Neo but did you know that Pete Jackson originally had Xena:Warrior Princess (Lucy Lawless) in mind for Arwyn in LotR? But seriously - I've seen designs both drawn and sculpted that were never used, sometimes even panned completely, and yet the work on its own is great. An example would be the dino-dog-human sculps made for the never made JP5 sequel - the idea was terrible but the sculpts themselves look fantastic. Maybe I'm just overly sentimental - anything created artistically by someone who is an accomplished* artist is always something that deserves an audience, even if the concepts that inspired them may not. (*by this I mean to specify between animated character cells that were never used but beautiful to behold and the guys taking photos of crucifixes in beakers of urine and calling it art - I make no pretense on which is and which is not art but I can say I would never ever be sentimental over a cup of urine). And lets not go all prognosticator on Scott's suicide. I personally don't think death is the most scary thing ever and I also don't think suicides are automatically the act of courageous people but the one thing I do believe is there is simply nothing more personal than the decision a person makes that leads to suicide. You can no more compare your life to them (for good or bad) than you can to a tomato.
