I’ve included SNL among the primetime shows just because it’s tied with “Revolution” at the moment for top scripted show on NBC.

“Guys With Kids,” “Up All Night” and “Chicago Fire” look like the shows most vulnerable to cancellation. “Up” is being retooled as a laughtrack sitcom but doesn't yet have a full second-season order.

ABC

1.2 (1.7) (---) (---) (---) (---) (---) (---) (---) (---) Don’t Trust The Bitch

“Don’t Trust The Bitch In Apt. 23” and “Last Resort” are doing worse than the already-cancelled “Private Practice.” “Happy Endings” and “666 Park Avenue” also don’t look long for this world.

--- (---) (---) (0.8) (1.1) (---) (---) (---) (---) (---) Made In Jersey

“Vegas” is squandering its strong “NCIS LA” lead-in. “The Mentalist” is circling he drain unless CBS gives it a stronger lead-in than “The Good Wife.” “Partners” is struggling in one of the best slots on TV.

"Five-0" is getting crushed by "Revolution" but does well internationally, so it probably needs to fall a little further before CBS reaches for the plug.

--- (---) (---) (0.9) (1.0) (1.3) (1.5) (---) (---) (---) Mob Doctor

“Mob Doctor,” “Ben & Kate,” and “The Mindy Project” all look vulnerable.

“The X Factor” is renewed for next season but it’s doing much worse with Britney Spears than it was with Paula Abdul.

0.2 (0.3) (---) (---) (---) (---) (---) (---) (---) (---) Nikita

“Emily Owens” and “Nikita” barely have a pulse. “90210” isn’t doing much better.

“Arrow” is slipping but it’s still The CW’s number-two show.

AMC’s “The Walking Dead” now beats everything but football. “Sons of Anarchy” is cable’s number-two scripted show. “Jersey Shore” is a shadow of its former self. CNN’s ratings were extraordinarily elevated above MSNBC and Fox News Monday thanks to Sandy coverage.

    Sigh

    by Sci-FiJunky

Why is it that nobody watches the the good shows? Don't Trust the Bitch in Apartment 23 is by far in my top three funniest shows in televison right now. As a straight man, I finally see why all the young girls used to go gaga over James Van Der Beek. He, is by far, the highlight of the show. I will be very disappointed if it gets cancelled.

    The Mentalist.

    by JP

Been on the decline but doubt it'll get the boot. Still, the Red John shit is real old, and they surround the most interesting character - Partrick Jane - with a group of dull, boring characters no-one gives a fuck about. It kills the show whenever Jane isn't the focus.

Comic book men - not in the top cable shows

    by V'Shael

Pulling a 0.5 in the 18-49 demo, with a shade under 1 million viewers. Apparently that's fine with AMC, who are aware they've screwed the show a little by moving it to an 11:30pm slot.

And yeah Supernatural has been truly awful this year.

    by V'Shael

Talk about directionless. The found footage werewolf episode was like someone had a really shit idea for Ginger Snaps part 18, and shoe-horned it into Supernatural.

Boardwalk Empire has been renewed already. HBO doesn't look at the ratings the same way other cable networks do. Premium networks, unlike majors and cable networks, do count DVR viewings and secondary broadcast viewings more heavily. HBO doesn't care when you watch their shows, just that you pay for the subscription to get those shows. They don't rely on ad revenue that is lost by networks when people don't watch the show live and bring up the ratings.

They might as well cancel Revolution now

whatever steam it has will be squashed by the 6 month "break" the network brain trust is about to administer. No "sci-fi" drama survives that in their first year.

    Boardwalk and Person of interest

    by niven

Boardwalk is renewed for a fourth season and rightfully so it's one of the best shows on tv right now. I'm so glad i stuck with person of interest and im glad people thought the same because it's doing the fringe route. A season of purely self contained procedure stuff, while sprinkling overarching mythos, then as the show progresses season by season then it becomes more arc heavy and the characters shine more and more. If anything the emmerson/cavizel duo is one of the more badass network tv duos we've had in a while. Revolution isn't rocking my world, but the potential is there and im glad it will likely get to play out that potential. Real REAL shame about last resort, just more evidence on how outdated network television is.

    Don't Trust; Supernatural; Nikita, thoughts

    by Def Ref

    * Sad to see that Don't Trust the B**** in Apt. 23 is doing so poorly, but not surprised. It's an offbeat sharp show and the bozos who keep dreck like 2-1/2 Men on the air are probably frightened of smart funny women like Krysten Ritter. She's hot. Oh well. * Supernatural has been a total mess this season. The first warning was the throwaway found footage episode. I was out that evening and wasn't watching live, but my g/f called to say she'd shut it off after 12 minutes. I watched it and it was a pointless slog. Unlike the Ghostfacers one-off, this was both pointless and inexplicably featured as the 4th episode of the season; this, at best, would be a throwaway somewhere in the eps. 16-18 area of a season where the change-ups go. Last week's episode with the vampire who helped Dean out of Purgatory was another snoozer. She actually dozed off through much of it and I was nodding, too. The fundamental error they've made this season is to be telling their stories in multiple flashbacks and it's killing the momentum. Instead of showing Sam's year of puppy domesticity and Dean's fight out of Purgatory in a jumble, they should've told each part in a straight line. Spend the first two episodes getting Dean out of Purgatory; then he finds Sam as a retired homebody and explore that before he drags Sam back into the game; then find Prophet Kevin and do the hijinx with Crowley. If they'd done that there'd be a flow and momentum; what they're doing now is just a mess. * Nikita is having a rough reboot and it wasn't helped by going on air a couple weeks after shows like Gossip Girl and Supernatural. I don't know what they were hoping for in delaying it when it's already on the death slot night.

    by tangcameo

...the moment they tried to pass off a small town Woolworth's storefront as an old time Vegas casino, I knew this show was doomed. Have they never heard of stock footage? I think even The Godfather II used it to fake Las Vegas.

Shame Nikita is doing so poorly...

    by Nasty In The Pasty

...although it's a show TOTALLY at odds with the typical CW template (good-looking twentysomethings mooning over each other with pop song montages every five minutes), so I can sort of understand why it hasn't caught on. This is a show that should have been on Fox...it's like the spiritual daughter of 24.

  • I've been made to watch the shows with my fiance, but I end up really, really enjoying them. They've got hot actresses in them, use a lot of movie references, and the characters often talk or act as goofy as my fiance and I do, like the shows were written by friends of ours. I hope those shows don't get cancelled, they're better than that. It'd be a shame.

I find myself liking PoI and Downton Abbey of all things as two of my top shows.. The rest I just record and watch out of boredom..

  • please, we should be getting further and further away from that archaic paradigm. Not making a show go back to that.

  • The show's already way the FUCK off from the usual CW programming model (strong female characters, great action setpieces, an ongoing mythology, and romantic entanglements as a SECONDARY aspect?...does not compute!), so of COURSE they decide to pair it up with a reality show which no doubt pulls a completely different audience. Madness, sheer madness...

  • Funny writing, great ensemble, lots of random humor, Eliza Coupe & Casey Wilson are gorgeous. It has a lot going for it.

    by rakesh patel

we kinda figured ones would be dead and which ones would be worth watching. revolution needs to sharpen up or be cancelled. it's dropping viewership not not nearly enough, as one poster mentioned a gap of months to pick up should effectively kill it. last resort i like so of course its going to be cancelled. 666 s a guilty pleasure, feels im watching a soap. like most of you i'm not too bothered if they get cancelled or not. these companies have created rods for their own backs. There used to be a time when a shows audience built up a following but too many are cut down before they have a chance to grow leaving the viewership with a story that never gets resolved. I downloaded awake. still haven't seen it, knew that if i watched it i would like it and be majorly disappointed when it got cancelled. now i can just view it as a mini series. Person of Interest and walking dead. i'd be truly fucking annoyed if they got cancelled. luckily both of them are safe. The quality in tv land has dried up.

    Supernatural

    by oisin5199

I've been bagging on this show a lot lately and have complained about the show recycling old stories (even ones from 2 years ago) by just switching the brothers. But I don't get the hate for the "Bitten" episode. I actually thought that episode was probably the best one the show has done in a long, long time. I liked that the main characters were peripheral here, seen through the eyes of outsiders (a la Blink, one of the best Doctor Who episodes ever). I liked the found footage thing, as cliche as it is and totally ripping off Chronicle. I think they did a good job of making us care about these three characters. Usually, the victim(s) of the week are throwaways. Even when we get some backstory or development, it's really brief and not very interesting. Here, you got to see people go through an entire change from meeting, forming a relationship, then going through horror. More importantly, Sam and Dean got to see it, and their reaction afterwards was poignant - one would hope this would give them a different perspective on the people who are victims/monsters. I especially liked the touch of putting the song back on the ipod as they left. I haven't felt moved by an episode of Supernatural since that one moment last season when Dean was practicing forcing a smile. And this thing with Benny does give Dean some much needed depth besides, 'grrr - kill the bad guys, I'm angsty, give me a burger' I just really hope they don't devolve to the same old Crowley doublecrossing demon routine again (I love Mark Sheppard, but talk about an overused villain). They need to end this show with some grace. There almost might be a light at the end of the tunnel for the characters.

    RE: Supernatural

    by MrDark

Bitten might have been fine as a mid season filler episode, but as it stood it killed any momentum (and there doesn't seem to be too much right now) that the season had been building. We had just went the entire prime time break without new episodes and then this gets thrown out where the main characters have a good 5 minutes of total screen time. I had no relationship with the characters and by the time I realized what they were doing with that episode I stopped caring. It was bad enough the 3 supporting 'main' characters fit into perfect archetypes. Reminds me of Metal Gear Solid 2. You spend the entire time thinking you're going to get back to Snakes story that by the time you finished you're just pissed off. I think we're going to end up with the same thing we saw in some of the other seasons where it starts off boring but the last 10 or so episodes really drive the season home. From what I read there is an idea to have 10 seasons before the show ends, and this season is supposed to be the beginning of that long arc. I'm hoping that this is the only reason why it is dragging these things out so long.

  • They're good shows, but not fantastic. I'm happy in getting a decent season out of shows like Last Resort, and 666. Nikita, Fringe, and Supernatural all got extra seasons despite having bad ratings. I agree with most of the Supernatural complaints... This flashback crap is total garbage. They should dedicate episodes to telling the stories from the get go. Most of the stories have been very boring so far. Nikita... Yeah... Definitely not as cool as it once was. Also pretty boring.

Why didn't Fox try to do a spin off of House??

    by thelordofhell

A spin off with any of the other characters would have pulled better ratings than Mob Doctor

  • If I were making TV shows these days, I'd go a whole other marketing route. I'd keep the commercials, but do everything via individual subscription through on-demand services. Pay by the program, not by the channel. You wouldn't have to worry about Key Demographics cancelling your show. Content producers would get the commercial revenue without the network middle man. And at 0.25 cents per episode, a program with 3 million viewers (Revolution) makes $750,000 in subscriptions per episode from viewers alone. that's plenty to make a program per week. With the commercial revenue on top of that, profit. Programs would have a minimum run of six episodes (a $1.50 subscription) to develop an audience and build revenue to continue production. You wouldn't be stuck only able to watch certain things on your satelite or cable on demand, or have to go to hulu, or get upset because Netflix isn't licensed for that one show. There would be competition for the good ones. And you as a viewer would finally benefit from the competition. Things that were smart and did well, like Homeland, Boardwalk Empire, Walking Dead, and Revolution, if they succeeded after six, and raised the capital to continue, they'd continue production through a 24 episode arc. They'd wrap up their seasons, with no cliffhangers, and develop again for the next season. They'd have to bring a lot of quality each time, or pack up and quit playing. It's why good shows in places like the UK tend to go six to 12 episodes and then take a year or so off. (see Bad Education, The IT Crowd, Blackadder, Friday Night Dinner, Whitechappel, Luthor, etc. Those shows that suck, like Animal Practice, would wrap up after six shows and never be heard from again. The people that make that kind of crap would lose their investments and learn not to do that kind of thing again. Capitalism at work.

    by oisin5199

"Bitten" killed momentum? What momentum?? The same old "insert Macguffin - get it before Crowley - where's Castiel? - why aren't the boys getting along" bullshit story arc we've had for the last 4 seasons? The reason why that episode worked was that it was something different that actually helped the viewer (and Sam and Dean) see their mission in a new light, something the show has needed for a long time. And it actually made me think about and care about they're doing as hunters. Usually what passes for 'different' on Supernatural is some half-baked meta episode. I'll go on record and say this was the best episode of Supernatural in years.

The Darklinglord, TOTALLY AGREE on the five-season rule

    by Nasty In The Pasty

I think I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of shows that haven't had a noticable dip in quality after the fifth season. Either five seasons or 100 episodes...which ever comes first. There are rare exceptions (Cheers managed to stay funny for eleven seasons, but that had two major cast changes, keeping things fairly fresh), but otherwise, when a show -- especially a "mythology"-heavy show -- crawls past the 100-episode mark, the quality inevitably starts to fail...the writing gets lazy, the actors get bored, and the showrunners forget what made their shows so good in the first place. Hell, Heroes sefl-destructed after ONE good season, so getting even five good seasons is kind of a miracle.

Comic Book Men, The Office, X Factor

    by tyjagi

AMC def screwed Comic Book Men. When it aired at 10 and was an hr, averaged around 1.5 on Sundays! During the Oscars, Grammies, etc. Moving it to 1130 was idiotic. They should just have the walking dead at 9. Talking dead at 10, CBM at 1030, then a repeat of Dead at 11. The Office is a flop especially in the last season. Guess people just don't care anymore unless they bring Carell back for a cameo. X Factor is by far the best singing competition on TV, but going up against The Voice is killing it. that's why they're diging for ratings by having Spears and Khloe, and is utterly cringeworthy. They need to fire Khloe and just keep Mario Lopez. Oh well, Spears will probably be gone next year, so hopefully they'll get someone like Taylor Swift or Pink to judge. American Idol will suffer. the first few auditions will probably do decent, then it will flop. Nobody wants to see Mariah/Nicki for so long.

I mean, seriously, you start out by needing to get the plan out of Walt's head. But thats just a red herring and wheel spinning, nope no plan. But wait, he really put the plan on tapes in the Harvard Lab and can only get to them by drilling through more amber each week. Are you fucking shitting me? Thats your MacGuffin of the week? I've seen better writing from a third grader, but given you probably had to hire a staff full of second graders and only pay them lunch money to write this shit in between classes, it makes perfect sense now! Seriously though, this is one sorry ass piece of shit television show now. Burning off Henrietta just to pump the drama didn't even register on the pulse meter. It just made me go.. 'thats all you had in mind for that character.. wtf?'.

Gambling sites already paying out Obama wins.

    by DougMcKenzie

Five Thirty Eightdotcom has Obama at 86% to win. Romney pulled a Kerry. Had an incumbent that he could take down with a good campaign, but screwed the pooch. I think his billionaire ambivalence took him down. Hillary 2016, Bitches!!! Actually I think RFK Jr. is the dems man for '16 while the Repubs launch Jeb on America!

...and early episode of "Family Ties." It is god-awful. That show lasted seven years? And why did they light those 80s sets like a football field? Video versus film, I know....but, still.

any episode of Supernatural after season 5...

    by sonnyhooper

....should just be considered fan fiction. Fan fiction that just happened to make it onto the airwaves.
Season 5 was the perfect ending point. as far as i'm concerned the real story ended with the shot of Dean in the house with Lisa and Ben, almost happy, and then the slow pull out to the street light flickering and finally going out.....fade to black...the end.
in my mind the camera never panned out to see Sammy standing under the streetlight. that shit should have never happened. they HAD a perfect ending, one that was more satisfying then the ending to Lost and BSG put together and they fucked it up by going ahead with seasons 6, 7, and 8.
oh well. what can you do?

  • Nov. 6, 2012, 10:08 a.m. CST

I used to be a Nielsen viewer, back when Buffy switched to the WB.

    by happybunni

It was super annoying to use the box so we often didn't. You always had to put in how many people were watching as well. You also had to be home at the time the show was on, which wasn't often the case. A show like Revolution is doing well because I suspect it's just sci-fiy enough that people with boxes give it a chance, and are actually at home with their families when it's on.

  • What the fuck does Middle America know that I don't!?!?!?!? Then again, my jam is ABC's top lineup and its two LEAST WATCHED shows. And a chunk of NBC's mid-level shows with NOTHING toward the top or bottom. So what the fuck do I know that Middle America doesn't...? Oh, right, guns. Middle America really loves guns and explosions and hates comedy without laughtracks.

A show about two lard asses? Why is that a show? Are blubber butts funny?

  • Nov. 6, 2012, 2:10 p.m. CST

    by Dan

yes, I think I'd be grossed out if I had to watch two characters with rolls and rolls of fat kissing each other ... because I'd be grossed out if I had to watch them doing anything. To be brutally honest, even in real life, I find it aesthetically displeasing to watch a very, very fat person simply walk across a room — just like I'd find it distressing if I saw a very drunk person stumbling across a bar or a heroine addict slumping in a chair.

If Linda McMahon loses, can WWE get raunchier?

    by HalJordanSuperstar

Because that's the most important thing to happen today. This whole, Linda's running for Senate, so we need to be PG shit has been bad for WWE. Like everyone, I will miss Happy Endings. It's on the wrong network and in the wrong timeslot. Maybe someone else will see the value in it. Mentalist better have a cancellation plan to wrap up Red John or there are going to be some p-o'ed seniors.

Bummer to hear about Supernatural sucking after S5

    by Kremzeek

I started watching S6. It wasn't awful, but I was really burnt out on the show so I decided to take a break. I still haven't gone back. It just felt like it was time to end it. They should've just finished it as Kripke intended. Sounds like it's just gotten worse since then--like every other show that was awesome, and then the suits pushed for it to go on too long (That 70s Show, The Office, Smallville... the list goes on...). I agree with sonnyhooper. But it's a bummer they couldn't keep the magic going.

  • Nov. 6, 2012, 9:33 p.m. CST

Out of all those shows listed up there I have seen a total of 6

    by Emperor_was_a_jerk

-SNL -The Office -Parks and Rec -30 Rock (started watching it a free months ago) -Sons of Anarchy (started watching It on Netflix this summer) -Walking Dead (Started watching it on Netflix this summer) With all those other shows that I know zero about (The Mob Doctor? Is that made up? It sounds made up) am I missing anything that I may like as much as the ones I am already watching?

    by Ryan N

    Are they renewed or what?

  • Nov. 7, 2012, 7 a.m. CST

    @ kremzeek...

    by sonnyhooper

...don't get me wrong, there are some episodes in season 6 &7 that come close to the magic of the first five seasons.... and that's not to say seasons 1 through 5 didn't have a few episodes that were stinkers. But it is very much about the very point you bring up......Kripke had the perfect logical ending point for the story and its just a shame the network did not listen to the show creator and finish with that perfect ending point.
I do have to hand it to Kripke for having the balls to walk away from his own show instead of staying on after the the fact.
