Learn What Warner Bros.’ Proposed TWILIGHT ZONE Movie Is About!!
There’s long been a new “Twilight Zone” feature in development at Warner Bros., but this is the first I’ve heard about it’s about.
Buried toward the end of a Vulture story about upcoming time-travel movie projects, there was this:
Warner Bros. is developing The Twilight Zone (based on the venerated Rod Serling sci-fi TV series that also sparked a 1983 film), that until recently was to be directed Matt Reeves (Cloverfield). It follows a test pilot who winds up breaking the speed of light; when he puts down his craft, he discovers that he’s landed a bit late for supper — 96 years late.
That sounds a little like the Feb. 5, 1960 episode “The Last Flight,” the first “Twilight Zone” scripted by Richard Matheson. It followed a British biplane pilot fighting World War I in 1917 who finds himself passing through a strange cloud and ending up on an American air base in 1959.
Thanks to my fellow KERN-AM contributor “Movie” Mike Armendariz for the heads up.

A whole movie based on just that storyline??? Lame...
by Punisherthunder
-
In this one Dan Ackroyd says, "Do you want to see something really scary", turns away....and then he just turns back around. Oooooo, spooky!
-
Not a movie, trying to make a cash grab on the name-recognition (seriously, would anybody make a movie with the above plot, without the T.Z. name attached to it?). A TV show. But it needs to be on AMC, or HBO, or Showtime, or FX or some other specialty channel. A dozen episodes a season. High Quality, short run. Like American Horror Story, or Walking Dead. But, for gawd's sake, never put it on a major network. It's been tried twice (three times?) already. It can't be PG. It has to be harsh in its ironies. Oh, and adeceasedfan...bad joke. Funny, but bad.
-
Sounds like a fascinating high-concept plot that should remain interesting for at least 22 minutes.
-
Because the original was soooo not PG? What the fuck.

I figure we're due. An entire movie of that, though, might be a bit much.

The closer you get to the speed of light, the slower time goes for you relative to those around you. The effect would not be 96 years but thousands of years as you approach the speed of light. If you passed it, like the quote says, you'd "break" special relativity, and to the observer time would be going backwards (?) while to you it was stopped (?).

And it goes back in time, and (if I remember correctly) they all dinosaurs outside, so they know it isn't 1950-something. Fuck having only a single story, do what they did with 80's version, but this time give us original vignettes. Holy shit, my computer says I just went back in time... coincidence?

It's not an anthology because Hollywood has run out of ideas, again.
by batfunk
I want original short stories.
-
It's something that I framed-out as a TV series about 13 years ago. I never showed it to anyone...as proximity counts when it comes to attempting to sell a show to the powers that be in this industry, and if you don't have it...that zero degrees of separation that you need, you really risk getting your idea stolen, especially if it is original. I think my idea is the only real way to deliver a Twilight Zone film successfully to the screen--one that would have some bite in the absence of the great Rod Serling who taught me how to write...by example.
-
This one couldn't hold a fucking film.

Maybe Matt Reeves knows this movie isn't the way to get a head in life.
by DrBathroomMD
Sound like a situation where one could lose one's head.
-
If they're basing this movie on what life would be like 96 years from now I think it would be incredible. I'm positive that the pilot is going to be bewildered by how much our technology has advanced, how our society has changed because of it. It's going to be interesting to see how the Government is going to react to such an event. 96 years from now speaking in real terms, the Earth is going to be completely different. By 2100 I'm sure we'll possess technology beyond nanotech, (IMO A.I capable of passing the Turing test). Placing someone in such an environment would be equivalent to visiting another time, place, and dimension (aka the Twilight Zone). Some of you are being completely negative and short sighted if you think there's isn't a strong possibility of this being a remarkable film.
-
This sort of thing never ends well. Just ask Charlton Heston.

sound like a great idea for a movie, dont hang onto the coat tails of the twilight zone
by rakesh patel
i know obviously why they want to use the branding... to bring punters in, but really it doesn't require it. if you're focusing on one story it's just a movie, thats it. I wouldn't mind a new twilight zone series, fronted by someone who could give it the care and attention it needs. perhaps the crew behind American horror story?
-
And ideal for the matter, considering how many great Twilight Zone stories there are - and the possibility for creating new stories is always possible - people are too hung up on the fact that it is a Twilight Zone movie to accept that the story we've just heard about could make for a good feature length film. It is in no way a bad idea for a film and could easily be drawn into a full movie. People hear Twilight Zone and expect short, sharp, twisted stories with a punch. Also, this is the FIRST we have heard of a basic plot. Who knows if this movie will have more stories or not. It is a movie directly tied to The Twilight Zone. Let us assume they know what made the show and the previous movie work beforehand. Wait until we get more word before shitting all over this project needlessly. For a site dedicated to film-lovers, there is constant and endless hate for films instead of simply just trying to enjoy what is being put out.
-
is to get big-name directors to do an anthology movie (like the '83 one except better). Get Fincher, Del Toro, Nolan and Whedon onboard. Just keep it the fuck away from the Hack Pack aka Abrams/Kurtzman/Orci/Lindelof.

I agree stretching one story over one movie is a terrible idea...
by Rebel Scumb
I love the twilight zone, but the 1 hour episodes in season 4 suffer from the premise of the story being stretched twice as long as before, and even many of the 30min episodes by today's standards are 25min of filler, then the crazy twist at the end. It doesn't bother me because I like older stuff with a slower pace. But most of modern audiences (not just teenagers, but even baby boomer and gen xers) will not put up with that. The 'Scary door' episodes on Futurama are a good example of how most of what is memorable about twilight zone episode can basically be surmarized in 1 line of set up, then 10 seconds of pay off. There are certainly exceptions like The Jungle, or The Invaders, or Mirror image (my 3 favorite episodes) but the suggestion above that it should be an anthology series on cable was apt.
-
You know, the "Hobbit Model".

I'm sorta ashamed to say I've only ever seen the 80's version of the show.

-
Twilight Zone "what a tweest!" plots DON'T WORK when you have a full two hours to second-guess the plot.
-
If you like anthology series, there are some decent ones that pop up once in awhile, but why bother re-naming another "Twilight Zone"? A film, in some ways, makes more sense to do than another series. Either way, using the name itself is essentially a cash grab, even if they use new material.
-
But I think they're full price and not at a per season discount. There are some that are still posted on YouTube such as The Howling Man, which is a good yet obvious one. Some of the 80s ones were good too. The Stephen King one 'Gramma' and the one SK seems to have ripped off, 'A Matter Of Minutes', to make The Langoliers.

Surely that trope has been covered several times, in one form or another. And we now know one thing. The machines, once they achieve sentience, will rise up to destroy us, and yet be more incompetent than us at the same time. It's a scientiic fact that's what'll happen
-
Sure, the effects and makeup are really dated, but the stories and acting are usually excellent. One of my favorites is with Peter Falk as a Castro-lookalike (it was scary how alike they really looked), who gets paranoid and sees peope who will betray him in a mirror, and murders all of his senior staff after taking power. It's fantastic.

of all the brilliant stories, they pick one of the dullest ... Hollywood already simply recycles existing material because they are out of ideas and Gen-X, Gen-Y and Millennial have nothing to say and, hence, no new dynamic stories to tell
-
With only one segment, they are really gambling on success. The initial '83 film may have its problems, but the multiple segment structure was never one of them. Rethink, Warner Bros. Pull over and take another look at that map before you get lost.

an episode is about 25 minutes, in that time you can just focus on plot. No need for backstory, character development, or any other boring stuff. Also in that short amount of time you simply dont have to explain yourself, and thats the reason you can play with fantastic storylines. with a full lenght movie you will have to answer some questions and then the movie will fall flat.

unless you go the anthology route like the 80s film. Otherwise, it's just another generic genre film. I mean 'The Box' was already a full length remake of a Twilight Zone episode. I think they need to go back to lean and mean short stories. Keep them low budget without major special effects. Go for the claustrophobic, theatrical sense of the old series. Perhaps not black and white, but muted colors. Most importantly, have 3-4 stories but have a much better framing device than Dan Ackroyd in monster makeup. I think they should get meta and have it be stories written by a tv writer. The thing that was so amazing about Serling was that he wasn't an actor. He was a writer that could do a good voice-over and 4th wall breaking narration. There's a way to homage this without trying to imitate Serling. Have the stories add up to something in the framing device. Have them be connected by theme or a character or an object. There is a way to make this work. There are some good writers who could make this happen.

During one of the shots you can see the two severed heads flying towards the camera. Grisly stuff. I hate John Landis with a passion. They say he was more concerned with his career than the three people his idiocy murdered. The asshole should be in jail for involuntary manslaughter at the LEAST.
-
Give the writing to Nolan. Have him do a 3 piece anthology where all three stories tie into each at the end. That's all.....and wasn't he rumored to have been chosen for the director's chair way while back?
-
How fucking original...Not!
-
Ron Labrecque.
-
Part of the sadness about John Landis is that not only did he direct The Blues Brothers and Coming To America (an ageless comedy classic for me) but he's such a passionate geek about film. You watch him in film docos like American Grindhouse and Machete Maidens Unleashed as his enthusiasm is so infectious, you tell he loves movies and he's like a giddly little kid...makes me feel reinforced in being a director when there's lots of shit to deal with. On the other hand, director or not...safety is paramount and what I have read on the accident so far...it does sound like he was boorish on set and callous and insensitive about the accident. I think he should have been punished harshly. When everything has been said, his wrongdoings and the lessons to be learned from them outweighs whatever great art he's been part of. I hope Max can avoid that legacy as I think he's a talent.
-
...unpleasant woman. Okay, a shrill bitch. And the jury hated her so much that they were swayed by Landis's lawyer.
-
I didn't know a whole lot about the incident until last year. Sparked by an article here I'm sure I researched and came up with several interesting articles focused on the trial. I think the most informative was from Court TV's website. It drastically changed my opinion on Landis. Those kids shouldn't have even been there that night.

I think the answer is to use both the standard single narrative feature film model and the anthology model at the same time. Let me explain. 1) A moderately budgeted feature film (like this one they have announced). This would have a big star or two, and a high concept single narrative that has a Twilight Zone vibe. 2) To bolster this revival of The Twilight Zone brand, make a direct-to-video Twilight Zone anthology film ala The Animatrix, Batman Gotham Knight, and Halo Legends. Except in this case make each episode of the anthology live action. Animated Twilight Zone just seems odd. So now they've got this TZ anthology. What else can they do with it? How about playing various anthology episodes before other Warner Bros. features. Instead of all the bullshit they have before the trailers, show a cool 20 minute TZ short, followed by the theatrical trailer for the main TZ feature, in this case The Last Flight. Make it an event. 3) So let's say this initial Twilight Zone feature makes some dough at the box office and on video. Of course there will be a sequel or several perhaps. Repeat the above formula. A feature TZ movie, a live action TZ anthology, and then add maybe a Twilight Zone book collection, and maybe even a new TV series or miniseries. Seriously, The Twilight Zone has the potential to be a huge new genre franchise that can be more than just the studio clinging to the name brand to push a single genre flick through the marketplace. 4) Get an actor to be the Rod Serling stand-in. This narrator character would introduce each Twilight Zone episode or film. All of these intro segments and the new version of The Twilight Zone title sequence should be in black and white, to honor the original series. Right now I nominate Michael Shannon for this role. Surely there are other interesting choices for the Serling-esque character, but right now Michael Shannon jumps out as the most logical choice in my opinion. 5) Each feature film of the new Twilight Zone series can be either a new concept, a remake of a classic episode, or a loose adaptation as this one about the faster-than-light flight seems to be hinting at. With the short film TZ anthology stuff, the best approach would be a mix of adaptations of classic episodes and new story ideas. Yes it kinda sucks that they can't just make full on theatrical anthology films of The Twilight Zone. I can't blame them though. Let's not kid ourselves here, audiences today just won't tolerate anthology films. At least not a large enough audience to justify a decently budgeted anthology film filled with high concept story ideas. Grindhouse showed us this, and unfortunately Cloud Atlas is showing us that audiences aren't able to wrap their heads around such a concept imbedded in a feature film. It works in a TV format because viewers are used to the concept of a show being divided up into episodes, no matter whether it be an anthology show like The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits, or a formulaic series along the lines of CSI or Law & Order. So Warners are right to not flush The Twilight Zone brand down the box office dumper by blowing a bunch of money on an anthology that will just confuse audiences. I just think it would be a shame to completely throw out the anthology vibe. Using a responsibly budgeted Twilight Zone anthology as a marketing tool will not only give them a chance to market the hell out of the main feature, but it will also get us Twilight Zone fans onboard, maybe even the die hard purists who only enjoy the original classic from the 60's.

Thanks for the post...I agree with all the folks saying that stretching this one story out to a full length movie would be a bad idea. They are old classics that sure do pack an emotional punch, at least many of them did.

Make it look and feel like it was produced during the time that the original show aired between 1959-1964. This should also extend to the way things are designed, for instance, if you have astronauts, give them silver jumpsuits and rocket ships. If you have aliens use flying saucers and don't make the aliens look like ALIEN or the Predator. Go for surrealistic/nightmarish. Make the design work look like something inspired by old Sci-fi/Horror artwork like you would see in old copies of Amazing Stories and Creep/Eerie magazine. Now, the one concession that I would have is to shoot it on digital in 16X9 aspect ratio and also use modern CGI effects. The reason is that with digital technology being what it is today you can accomplish fantastic things on a TV budget (Doctor Who/Battlestar Galatica) while doing everything in black & white would reduce costs dramatically. Also, it would give the showrunners license to do virtually ANYTHING they wanted. Which brings me to my next point….. Buy pre-existing stories for fuck sakes! Don’t hire a bunch of jerk-off sitcom writers! Rod Serling was a TV writer but he was an EXCEPTIONAL TV WRITER while he had an amazing group of Sci-fi/Horror/Fantasy authors in his stable; Richard Matheson, Charles Beaumont, George Clayton Johnson among others. There’s soo much fucking GREAT short stories out there that you could run a new Twilight Zone show for years while keeping the costs down using digital tech which would give people the freedom to adapt whatever they like. Finally, and most importantly, the show must focus on the human condition and the fear of the unknown. Rod Serling wasn’t a “genre” writer but what he brought to The Twilight Zone was an overwhelming love of humanity and an understanding of its failings. Everything in that show was filtered through his particular sensibilities which is why it is the greatest TV show ever made.

I did hear that you could sign him for "Half" price!!! If you don't like that, then: Hold your breath... Bend Over... Count to 10, and... GO FUCK YOURSELF!!!!!

Let's face it, it was a huge part of the power of TZ: the short tales, the black & white, the suspense, it created a feeling of being in a small room somewhere and the only way to breath was to watch a tv screen. Like a long corridor in limbo. And if they get a calculating cerebral mathematician like Chris Nolan, it would work even better.
