With Despicable Me, Megamind, and now this, has the "bad guy" who wants to be good plot run it's course?
by openthepodbaydoorshal
This does look like a lot of fun, and John C Reilly's voice was made for an animated character.... I'm waiting for the feature length Archer movie...

Worst aspect of AICN is this dumb fuck's YouTube reviews.

I saw this at a screening a few weeks back and will see it again. No- It doesn't spend as much time as I expected traveling between video game worlds and the cameos were a small part of the whole. Still, it was fun and very creative. The story had hints of both Roger Rabbit and The Iron Giant in it, and I really cared for the characters. It almost gave me the same feeling I had after seeing "The Avengers" this summer. I will probably see this again. Only disappointment: no Sinistar cameo.

I wish the studios WOULD make another Roger Rabbit, or Iron Giant
by sasquatch_with_a_swatch_watch
but those movies were hand-drawn, and because of that, they had a charm and a whimsy that something like this will never come close to.

I'm pretty eager to see this but yeah I wish hand-drawn animation was still a focus at DISNEY. There is a market for it. Maybe if you didn't insist on using $30 million to get big name stars when you could use lesser known actors for 1/10 the money
by Autodidact
You can also save a shit-ton by hiring smart animation directors who can design amazing shots without relying on oodles of rotoscoped CGI.

From everything I've heard about classic Disney and voice casting
by sasquatch_with_a_swatch_watch
is that they hired actors who in some cases were known personalities, but not like, big stars, and there was real effort to maintain the illusion by not making the voice acting a such a focal point there was no "KATY PERRY as SMURFETTE!!" like you've got now. When I hear Seth Rogen's voice, I recognize it immediately, and want to throw up.

sasquatch - I wouldn't call John C Reilly anything near a big star, not like
by openthepodbaydoorshal
during Disney's '90s heyday when they hired Mel Gibson for Pocahontas.

Seriouosly? Do you wait and bide your time for John to put up a vid JUST so you can slam him for it? Does it tent your pants, robertplant? Does it get you hot? Seriously, man...What's your point? Other than being an asshole?

review the story line (including key plot points) while presenting the information in a bland and uninformed manner resulting in SPOILING the movie for the potential viewer while not really telling them whether the movie is worth seeing or not. I give this review a thumbs not for no spoiler warning and not proving much insight as to just how good the movie actually is.
-
What plot points were spoiled for you?

Hearing this reviewers voice reminds me of this scene... Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Which is why I prefer to read reviews.

This should have been done in crudely animated style of that heavily pixilated picture at the end of the article.
by Bubba Gillman
Would have been much cooler, and distinguished it (at least visually from every other CG cartoon out there).

So, is it good? Has it proved that video game movies have an audience?
by TheMachinist
More importantly, what did you guys think of the Paperman short at the beginning?

Futurama did a great 8-bit parody segment a couple of years ago.
by openthepodbaydoorshal
My favorite bit? The character (the Professor, I think) that leaves the room from the right side of the screen, only to reappear on the left side of the screen.
-
Keep hearing buzz this could be the future of animation. Please please please share thoughts on Paperman! Reviewers only talking about the feature.
-
This black and white short was so engrossing, I can't remember whether it had one thing in color or not - I keep thinking it did but honestly I can't remember (and I can imagine at least one of the characters in color). And for once we get an animated short aimed at adults in front of a Disney movie - kids will not find it nearly as interesting (it's about adult romance and the workplace). I would *love* it if Disney released a "movie" that was just a collection of shorts like Paperman. I dunno if I'd call it "the future of animation", from what I could tell it was just a 3D CGI film made to look like the characters were 2D in a 3D world (but they really were 3D). I think the black and whiteness of it and the great art style helped hide that fact.
-
The trailer makes it look like Ralph goes from game to game, but he really only invades two other games (though there are scenes in a couple other games). I would have much preferred to see him hop in like 4 or 5 games, and at least one of them a classic arcade hit. It's still a decent movie, and very fun, but it could have been more.

Movie is pretty good. Pretty enjoyable overall...but loved the short film infront of it more.
by K-Gin
No complaints about it at all. Not sure if they are going to do a Suagr Rush game, but they did a nice job of adding their own things to it and borrowing from Mario Kart. Is it Pixar's strongest? No, but its pretty enjoyable and has some nice moments. I think most people will enjoy it. I also liked Jane Lynch's character more than I thought. I was afraid that since she looked like how dreamworks does humans ( monsters versus aliens and Megamind) and how they over animate their facial expressions...she would come across the same. Still would have prefered a different look for her because it was still too close, but it didn't detract too much. That's my own thing though...the dreamwork humans just don't work for me.
-
K-gin i don't think this was pixar, I believe it was disney animation studios. I really liked this movie, i have a 2 year old so i didn't bring her, but my wife and i really dug it. Smart idea not to make it just 90 mins worth of cameos from video games, but the jokes were pretty solid. You could hear all the guys laughing at the jokes that went right over kids and wives' heads. It would have been great to see the biggies (mario, link, etc) but they did well without. Not to mention as one person previously stated sugar rush borrows alot from mario kart and the fixit felix game looks like a combo of donkey kong, theĀ original mario brothers game (before they were super) and rampage. Maybe nintendo felt ripped off or figured if their bigs were in it, they should be the stars which Disney isn't about to do. Not for everyone, but broad enough for general audience success.
